I loved everything about this beautiful historical pirate story with biblical themes. It’s filled with adventure, hardships, love, humor, and redemption. The characters are gritty, relatable, and deep, showing how they struggle, question God and his allowance for bad things to occur, and their growth in who he created them to be.

S.L. Klein isn’t afraid to discuss hard-hitting topics where she sheds light on a very important topic, which is human trafficking while doing so in a respectful and God-honoring way. Her writing reminds me of Francine Rivers in how she beautifully intertwined such a difficult topic with Scripture while being 100% uniquely her own.

“𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐝, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐨 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.”

While the topic of this book is heavy, there are epic quests, sword fights, and many laugh-out-loud and humorous moments with an amazing cast of characters that you grow to love and root for. There is also a slow-burn enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romance… plus there may be some side characters who find love, too.

If you are a fan of Francine Rivers, prominent Biblical themes, second chances, and stories that display how God can take something evil and turn it into good, you will love this book!

I told myself. I would never. NEVER. Annotate a book.

I mean what if I highlighted or wrote the wrong thing? What if an underline went wonky? #anxiety

But I knew within a few pages that this book. This one, was going to be special.

And if you can't tell by the amount of tabs in the reel. It delivered 1000%.

Easily one of my top favorite books of the year and out of the 900 no spice romances I have read.

It brought me back to all the reasons why I love this genre of romance so much.

It had the perfect Slowburn not only between the MCs but also smaller HEAs along the way.

It had characters who were flawed, lost, and struggling with different things.

It had action, adventure of swashbuckling pirates.

And through it all God's hand was there directing the story.

With every page turned not only did the characters remember that everyone is worthy of God's Love, Redemption and Grace, but I am too.

And in a world so filled with darkness, deception, anger, and lies. We need the truth that only God can give us.

The truth that He knows us individually. That He knows our hearts. That He knows our potential. And even in the darkness He is there if we turn to Him.

If you feel like you need a book to heal your heart try this one. It is definitely one I will never forget.

This book will steal your breath away. Absolutely stunning. It's a tale of pirates and romance and saving the lost while you don’t even know how to save yourself—and that doesn't even scratch the surface!

I got a free copy of this book and all opinions are my own.

Story: 5/5

Worldview: 5/5

Did I already said this novel was stunning? Aside from the flowing prose and crisp, captivating dialogue, the characters stole the show. I haven't experienced what Captain Ysa Marie has, but I can feel her brokenness through the pages. She seeks vengeance, but Someone is seeking her, too. Even though I thought Nyle was stuck-up and annoying for the first few chapters, his vicar friend Jasper is a humble, godly man... and he'll speak the truth even when Nyle wants to be stubborn and rebellious. Jasper definitely rounded out a few of Nyle's rough edges, but God did all the rest. :)

Worldview for this novel was spectacular. When Jasper in the early chapters started preaching something like "Who are you to say who is worthy of redemption?" I knew this book was going to be something amazing. Waves of Redemption did deal with difficult topics, like sexual assault, prostitution, human trafficking, slavery, suicidal thoughts/ideation. But through it all, God was working. God did miracles, both physically and spiritually. I was also amazed at the mention and inclusion and importance of the Holy Spirit and discernment—something that is not often included in Christian books at all.

Despite the tough themes, I can definitely see this being a book I would give my future daughter, so she can see that, no matter what, she is worth loving because Christ loves her. So she can see broken souls find redemption and identity in Christ. The power of prayer and gentle witnessing on another person's life. I want her to read it so she can understand that God moves the pieces even when we don't see it. He can take the ugly past and turn it into something beautiful. He did it for me, He did it in the pages of the novel, and He can do it for you, too.

3.5 rounded up to 4.

There were things I really appreciated about this book. The emphasis on redemption in Christ and that what has been done to someone does not define them were great to see. I liked several of the characters and some of the plot. The rescuing of innocents from a life of exploitation was incredibly admirable, and I'd love to see more of it in fiction. I also have to congratulate the author on writing a Welsh dialect-style speech pattern that was easy to understand. That, in itself, is no small feat.

There were some things about this book that needed work. I've read a lot of good prose and a lot of lackluster prose. While the prose in this wasn't especially egregious, it also wasn't what it probably ought to have been. Several phrases appeared frequently. Word choice and phrasing were fairly boilerplate without much to set them apart from other writers. Overall, the prose lacked a solidly unique narrative voice and wasn't overly interesting. This also needed a last proofread as there were multiple typos throughout the book.

I really enjoyed the first 60% or so of this, and the last about 10-20%, but throughout the middle 10-20%, I ended up skipping pages here and there when the romance subplot showed up. I don't care for romance to begin with, but I was hoping this might be one of the oh-so-rare exceptions. It wasn't, so I just skipped over it. There wasn't anything inappropriate about the romance, it just lacked depth, and I didn't care for it. I also wasn't overly enthusiastic about the emphasis on following how we feel to know what God is directing us to do. I understand that God impresses us in certain ways, but that is often very different from following feelings.

This book was EVERYTHING I wanted from a pirate book!!! I’ve been searching for one that I enjoy & every book I chose fell completely flat for one reason or another. I’m so thankful that a friend gifted me this book because I loved it so much.
The character development was great, relationships handled well, the faith 🥺😭🙏🏻 really perfect!!! This book tackled some really difficult topics in such a way that I felt the heaviness of the details, but not so much that I couldn’t read it.
Ysabella was an amazing FMC & the “side characters” (honestly a few of them felt like MCs because they were so well written 😆) were some of my favorite new characters!!
I thought overall the book was well balanced with character interactions, plot development & adventure!!!!

Thank you S. L. Klein for this gem of a book 🙏🏻♥️

This book swept me off my feet. I didn't expect to read it so fast. The setting is fantastic with the language and descriptions. The plot was so much fun with unexpected turns. I fell in love with characters I didn't expect to fall in love with. I enjoyed the underlying themes and message. The Christian aspects were so naturally placed and didn't feel forced like some Christian books do. The romance was sweet and swoony and the pacing was excellent without leaving you frustrated. I will have to pick up the second book at some point, because this was a fun read.

Waves of Redemption is a Christian historical fiction novel about human trafficking. While that can be an intense topic, Klein handles it with so much care and grace. The way she depicts trauma is very well done, and the explicit Christianity in the book feels natural--not cheesy.

But in addition to discussing human trafficking, this is also an exciting pirate adventure! And we get some super sweet romances as well! Klein balances the seriousness of the themes with enough light-hearted and even humorous moments that this book never left me feeling depressed. Every chapter is infused with hope and redemption.

This book has great pacing, a diverse cast of characters, and such a meaningful story. This book healed a piece of my heart I hadn’t even realized was broken.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who doubts their worth and value. Anyone who feels like Gods Grace certainly can’t cover over their sins. Anyone who is angry with God for the suffering they have endured. Waves of Redemption is the best book I’ve read so far this year, and I will be recommending it to everyone I can.

Fair Captain Ysa Marie + Nyle’s love story was beautiful. Nyle loved her how she needed to be loved. More than that was Ysa’s journey to finding God’s forgiveness. She didn’t think she was lovable by anyone because of her dark past. This book is full of redemption and scripture. I loved how the Author points to the fact that no one is too far gone for God. He will reach down to where you are. The writing in this book is SO deep. I had a hard time choosing a favorite line because there are so many but I have to also include this one because it shows how we are in our human depravity without God. But with Him there is always hope.
.
“No man would marry me. Not after everything that has happened. I would only be a burden.” Her own moved to the windows, though it was a black abyss beyond the glass. Much like her. Something to gaze at in hopes of seeing something beautiful, but looking through only revealed nothingness. Who would want to stare into a void every day?
.
This book was so wonderful. I hope everyone that reads this book can know that Jesus created you and loves you no matter what. Thank you for this amazing book 🤍

Oh. My. Gosh. As a first time ARC reader, my select book, "Waves of Redemption" did not disappoint.  Christian or not, everyone should read this book as it brings more light and awareness to the topics of suicide, substance abuse, and human trafficking; all the while keeping Christ at the center of it all. To sum it up in one sentence: think "Pirates of the Caribbean" mixed with the film "Sound of Freedom" from Angel studios.

I cannot express how much I enjoyed this book! As a Christian it's definitely a breath of fresh air to read a book filled with Christian themes and have so many quoted scriptures throughout the chapters. I don't normally enjoy romance themes but this book had just enough to keep me intrigued while not being annoyed by the constant reminder of a genre I don't enjoy.

That being said, I HIGHLY recommend "Waves of Redemption"! It's so beautifully written and you can tell that so much passion and research has gone into the pages. Grab yourself a copy before they sell out, S.L. Klein has outdone herself with her debut novel!

5/5 stars all around from me!

I loved everything about this adventurous, biblically-based pirate tale! I feel it accurately wrestled through the question: why does God allow bad things to happen to good people? While it deals with heavy topics, humor was sprinkled throughout this story. The characters were lovable - I do think Jasper won my heart though with his quips. It was a smooth read, action-packed, reflective, and inspiring. I highly recommend this book!

W-O-W.
Can one give a 5.5 star review? Only 5? 😢 I loved this.
It took me forever to finish through no fault of the author in the writing. In fact, I loved the second book (which I read first) so much that I exercised every last ounce of reading self-control these last few weeks to not finish in a day (since I do kinda have to live life outside of reading…), but I’ve been carrying it around everywhere and reached chapter 5 this morning . . . and my self restraint broke and I read the whole thing in a day.

So.

Where I’m at now is that if I didn’t have another equally exciting book to start, I would be in a major reading hangover because this was so good. 😂 That doesn’t often happen with me (yet it’s happened with three authors in a row this year! 😳).

I’m afraid to say anything about the plot and characters lest I not do them justice.

The depth of meaning behind this story and throughout it (human trafficking awareness, redemption, forgiveness, grace) is so incredible. You have to read it to know. Okay? That’s what I have to say. You have to read it.

I loved Aubrey. I want a book about Aubrey.
I got to the end and wanted a book about Bartholomew too, then realized I already read that.

But I want more of young Bartholomew. I’m hereby proposing that all readers lobby for a novella set between the books. 😁

Still-stunned-by-what-I-just-read reader signing out. 🫡

Content warnings: violence, piracy, human trafficking; references to abuse, sexual abuse, prostitution, two brief (failed) suicide attempts (not immersive).
Gritty. Not for the faint of heart in subject matter, but not overly graphic in description either.

Waves of Redemption is everything I want in Christian fiction. Klein wrote a beautiful story of imperfect people who need the healing and redemptive power that can only be found in Jesus. This story is raw and gritty. It covers some painful things that happen in our broken world. It’s also a story full of hope, forgiveness, found family, romance, and Jesus. So many Biblical truths! Even if you aren’t a Christian, I hope you read this book. Know that, like Ysa, you can find healing in Jesus.
If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go buy Ripples of Mercy and lose myself in another beautiful story by S.L. Klein.

A swashbuckling story with heart! Waves of Redemption is not only beautifully written, but it contains powerful messages of healing, hope and, of course, redemption. The characters are a superb cast of souls, each one jumping from the page with memorable qualities and discernible voices. I laughed out loud so many times while reading this, but I also cried. I rejoiced and I mourned along with the characters that began to feel like friends. I curled my lip at the dastardly ones that kept me riveted as the plot thickened. Excellently paced, delightfully told, and filled with the Words of life from cover to cover, this is a must-read for Christians, lovers of historical fiction, and the inner child in all of us that loves a good pirate tale.

The Fair Captain Ysa Marie wasn't always the scourge of the seven seas. She was once just a wounded girl with a broken heart and a shattered spirit. But when she encounters the mighty God who makes all things new, can that really include lawless sea captains?

Waves of Redemption follows Ysabella Fletcher in a swashbuckling adventure about the brokenness of mankind and the grace of a holy God. It shows with unflinching boldness the way that sin, both our own and that of others against us, can break us in the most devastating and intimate of ways. While this story never gets graphic, it does step fearlessly into themes like abuse, human trafficking, SA, alcoholism, piracy, betrayal, violence, death, and despair.

My personal favorite parts of Klein's writing are the banter (I actually laughed out loud several times), and the PRAYERS.

Prayer is seen in this story as a mighty weapon of spiritual warfare. In fact, when a major battle happens, the women praying back at home are held up as equal partners in the fight.

The written prayers of the characters throughout the story were so beautifully done, and the Lord used one prayer in particular to both chastise and comfort me deeply, exposing some lies that I have held onto with bloodied fingers. Even though I am not Ysa nor am I in the same situation, Klein's grasp of the gospel and the beautiful way she presented it through this story were tools in God's hands for His glory and my good.

I do not care how many times you have heard the story of God sending His Son to save sinners, I guarantee you could stand to hear it again (we all could). And it's presented SO BEAUTIFULLY in Waves of Redemption. I honestly cried so many happy tears reading this book.

The romances (yes, more than one set of darling couples are featured), are beautiful and swoony and clean. I found myself rooting for each couple and cheering wildly when they got their HEAs. Klein seamlessly shifts perspectives in a way that lets you see many people's POV but never leaves you confused or struggling to keep up.

Definitely give this story a read, friends. You will not be disappointed!

Thrilling sword fights, sweet romance, and a gritty-yet-hope-filled pirate redemption story: Fans of Christian Historical Fiction will find all of that and more in S.L. Klein’s Waves of Redemption.

Coming up with a blurb to put at the top of this review was an impossible task, because there are so many great aspects of this book I wish to highlight.

Klein portrays the horrors of human tr*fficking in a way that honors victims and never uses their trauma for shock value. While reading this book, it is evident that Klein has a passion for bringing light to this issue.

18th-century attitudes about women’s value, especially for victims of s*xual violence, are always difficult to read, but Klein explores and refutes those beliefs, reminding characters (and readers) that everyone has inherent worth and dignity, no matter what they’ve done or what’s been done to them.

As a Christian book, I also found it particularly encouraging. I could definitely go on about this, but I’m afraid I’ll run out of space, so I’ll put a pin in it for now.

Not only did the themes of this book have a great emotional impact, but the writing and pacing can each hold their own. Klein masterfully uses historical diction to set the scene. It never felt tacky, and the line-level writing was beautiful. At no point did I feel the book dragged, and each scene had an important place in the overall plot and emotional narrative.

I could say so many more things about the well-written characters (and the “side” characters that stole my heart) and the amazing romance, but for the sake of not being too wordy, I’ll just say: Read this book!

I highly recommend this book for fans of Redeeming Love and other Christian Historical Fiction. 🌊⚔️🤍

This book is a 6/5 for me! I loved this story so much. It followed pain, redemption and love that abounds all things. Ysa’s character was written so well and everything that she went through hurt my heart and even though she isn’t really I wanted to pray for her.
Her crew had so much respect for her and reading all the relationships she formed out of her crew were beautiful to see. Jonsely(I think I spelled that right maybe not😂) was so awful and he made me so angry. How could he believe that he owned her like she was something he could buy. Its mind boggling that people in this world can hurt women in many different ways from sexual assault to human trafficking is utterly devilish. The wrestle with God she has is what we see in a lot of people but it also shows that God is never done with you no matter how far gone you think you are.
This book I believe is a reminder to people of how awful human trafficking is. We must try and protect men, women and children who are suffering from human trafficking. Aisha was someone my heart went out to but watching her grow after Ysa poured her heat out and showed her what happened to her in the past helped Aisha see she was not alone.
By the end, I was excited to see Ysa start to go by Ysabella again because she realized her identity in Christ. She realized that she had been mixed up with her purpose and her identity. She finally realized her identity was in Christ and he will give her the purpose she seeks. If you read this and you haven’t read it, I highly recommend this book!❤️

4.5 ⭐

I'm always sceptical picking up a Christian fiction because I find them, well...cheesy. But, that is NOT the case here. This book was full of the Gospel from start to finish in such a beautiful way. This whole story points to Christ.

I feel like I was really taken to the 1700s pirating world in this novel. The descriptive setting, the courtships, the language: S.L. Klein is a great storyteller!

Each of these characters were so well thought out and distinct. From Ysabella's redemption to Nyle's doubt, Scurlock's loyalty to Jasper and Pearl's strength. Each person served a specific purpose in the story and it wouldn't have been complete without every single one of them.

There was such a good balance of heavy and light. With the banter between the crew mates and even the girl talk between the ladies, it had me giggling. 😁 And also, the different relationships between the side characters was so fun to see. I loved how each character has their own story woven throughout...it wasn't ALL about the MC.

⚠️ Content warning: this is a HEAVY book with HEAVY topics including SA & r@pe, and human trafficking. They all serve a purpose in showing Christ's redemptive plan throughout history and in showing how God loves us; His plan is for His glory and our good.

Simply, go read this book. It's a must.

If you love Pirates of the Caribbean and redeeming love this is the book for you!

Ysabella had a traumatic event happen in her life, and she ran away from home to avoid being further hurt and ensnared. She entered into piracy and for the past eight years has been collecting a crew of pirates that are faithful to her and is now known as the fair captain Ysa Marie. She has a vendetta against the Wingate family that she plans to ruin.

Scurlock was a young man when he came across Ysabella the night she escaped. Together they boarded a ship and later found themselves pirates. He has remained her closest friend, quartermaster and confidant.

Nyle is set to inherit his uncle's shipping business, but is farmer by choice and trade. He is the one Ysa has been set on ruining. He is a God-fearing, kind man but when threatened can hold his own against the best of them.

This was such a fun book to read. There is adventure, pirating, close calls, and romance. This book is full of redemption and God's pursuit of our hearts no matter how far we think we are from Him.

No spice - just kisses
No language

A very well written, interesting, and unusual historical novel, one that captures your interest immediately. If you are looking for a book that has depth, passion, adventure, mystery, and, of course, a love story, 'Waves of Redemption' will not disappoint. S.L. Klein has hit it over the fence with her debut as a self-published author. She addresses darker topics and brings them into the light in such a way that the reader will feel like s/he can conquer these issues. I think everyone needs to read this book. It is a journey of healing as you read through it no matter what s/he has been through. The reader will laugh, cry, get angry, be relieved, and be led through some emotional healing while reading this book. One may find him/herself reading it again ... like I did! I don't think there is anything out there like it. I'm excited to read her sequel. The detail of Klein's writing is so clear that you can actually see in your mind's eye the pictures and scenes she is describing. Five stars for sure.

Such a beautiful story with amazing themes, characters and symbolism. Definitely one of those books with a story and message that will stay with me a long time. I loved how supportive and encouraging the characters are of each other and how they challenge each other to grow. I really loved the bible verses weaved throughout the dialog/story and learning from the characters relationship with God.

Non spoilery dialog from one of my favorite scenes:

Then why do you insist on putting up wall around yourself?
What walls?
The ones you keep around your heart.
They are there to prevent anyone from having the opportunity to rip it to pieces again. The wounds I carried for years are just beginning to heal.
Do those walls not keep out the Healer, then?

Ooof. Straight to the heart with that one.

If you like stories of redemption, characters with flaws who are struggling to do better, and a book you can really feel an impact from, all in a swash-bucking pirate world, this one is for you!

This book has it all! Not only is the story great, but the characters are well developed and face challenges spirit, soul, and body. S. L. Klein takes time to not skimp over the depth of emotion and struggle that her characters feel. I also liked the bits of humor that were thrown in as well as her beautiful writing style.
This book is a story of the main character's journey of dealing with her own struggles from the past, while at the same time helping rescue others who have been where she was. While she starts out on a path of revenge, the Lord redeems her story and captures her heart. And ofcourse it wouldn't be a perfect book without a love story intertwined within as well.
Often times you can find a book that is a love story, or a book with rich depth, or a book that is an adventure. But not often does it have it all. It was refreshing to have all those elements in one with "Waves of Redemption."

🏴‍☠️Waves of Redemption🏴‍☠️

“Vengeance belongs to the Lord, but so does redemption.”

Jesus, pirates, fighting human-trafficking, & wave upon wave of redemption?? Give me it all!

This story has some dark moments that will absolutely break your heart - but that’s the whole point. These innocent people trapped in trafficking can’t close their eyes to this evil & neither should we! Klein shines light into the darkness - urging God’s children to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.

Ysa (Ysabella) shows how our great God can redeem any traumatic experience & use it for our good & His glory. We live in a woefully broken & cruel world but Ysebella’s story is a beautiful picture of how God’s victory will shine through it all.

I loved this book so much & it’s, dare I say, one of my new favorite books. I tried to savor it & not just inhale it. When I wasn’t reading it - I was thinking about it. I laughed, I cried & I praised Jesus for washing away all our sin. Diving into book two NOW!

Powerful. Heartfelt. Swashbuckling.

I love Ysa Marie not only because she fulfills all my childhood fantasies of being a pirate captain, but even more so because her history of trauma and the shame and pain she feels because of it resonated deeply with my adulthood struggles. The wise words of the godly characters she encounters throughout the tale found their way into my own heart, especially in my favorite quote from the book, "Don't stop at servanthood, but enter into daughterhood."

Should you read this book? If you like pirates, historical fiction, swashbuckling mysteries, truly evil villains that get the justice they deserve, handsome captain's sons with wind-tossed blonde hair, gruff brotherly best friends with hearts of gold, stories with gospel power and narrative intrigue, then the answer is a resounding YES.

4.5/5 stars!

This book!

It was so good. I loved how it wasted no time getting to swashbuckling fun, which is imperative for me while reading a book about pirates. The characters were great, the setting was amazing, and the plot was incredible.

This book tackles the topic of human tr*fficking with sensitivity and in a way that very much honors survivors. This VERY important topic didn't overshadow the fun setting and characters, which is a difficult balance to find when wanting to share such an important message while also wanting to entertain.

I also loved how Christ-centered it was. It really dove into how we find our healing and identity in Christ alone, which is a message sorely needed in today's world.

The biggest reason I am not giving it 5 stars is that I did feel like the romance was a bit rushed and would have liked to see more tension and build-up. But that hardly takes away from the story in any way.

I just finished reading this enthralling story.

It speaks on deep topics that are still an issue in this day and age.
S.L. Klein did a good job wrapping a catching storyline with the subject matter of hard to talk about topics. This story shows that regardless of what someone has done, God will never deny his redemption to them.

I felt the characters were so real and deep. I want to keep on with them as the progress in their lives. I could read a whole series about the adventure's of Ysabella .

This book is for anyone who enjoys ad good historical fiction book but also enjoys a good read with adventure, love and relatable characters.

I would recommend this book to the reading audience of 15 years old and up, due to the subject matter might need some explanations.

A clash of pirates upon the waves of redemption... (Pun intended.)

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Waves of Redemption doesn't shy away from the reality of human tr@ficking. The story takes on the heavy topic and peels back the curtain for a sobering look at what these people might go through while tastefully written. (And not in a graphic way either)

My heart soared high as SL Klein delicately weaved adventure, romance, and God into the story. (Like, grinning from ear to ear.) There's scripture in here! I adore it!

This story is for those who love drama in the high seas, filled with swashbuckling pirates. If you like romance like When Calls the Heart and pirates stories like Pirates of the Carribean, then you'll love this one.

I enjoyed this book so much from the plot to the settings to the characters’ personalities to the witty dialogue! Everything was very well thought out! I appreciate how much effort and research went into writing this story. I cannot imagine the number of countless hours it took to gather all of the geographical information, pirate terms/phrases, and keeping everything congruent with the time period. I also love that the focus of the story (the Gospel and fighting human trafficking) is near to the author’s heart. What a beautiful, well-written story of redemption! I’m excited to read more from this author in the future!
