This is an essential book for anyone who considers themselves a Mod or is interested in modism and the mod subculture. It isn’t a great book and has an abundance of typos, misspellings, and transpositions that readers like me will find distracting. However, the substance of the book remains useful, as it covers the development of the UK’s mod subculture, the Who’s evolution, and Peter Meaden’s role in each—and his own evolution. Written by Steve Turner and based largely on his legendary interview with Meaden (during which Meaden made his well-known utterance, “Mod living is an aphorism for clean living under difficult circumstances.”) Fans of mid-60s fashion, music, and culture will find King Mod informative and entertaining, and an inspiration to continue living the mod ethos.
