Serial Comic, is a comedy-gone-tragic when a comedian whose personal goal it is to cause someone to laugh himself to death leaves a trail of murdered bodies on his way to becoming a famous stand-up comedian.
Montie Stephenson, not quite twenty-one, has his life shattered when he finds his parents dead of an apparent murder/suicide. He leaves the small central Illinois farm-town where he grew up, behind, after settling the estate of his parents. He meanders, with no intentional destination in mind, and ends up in the bustling little tourist town of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where for the first time in his life he takes a girlfriend and develops a personality.
After years of sexual abuse, metered out by his loving folks, Montie has surprisingly maintained a good sense of humor. Recognized by others as being quite funny, Montie decides to tryout for the 2009 Lake Geneva Corn-Boil and Comedy Competition. Warmly received on his debut comic performance, Montie speaks in his regular farm-boy vernacular, explaining how farm-life differs from city-life, using funny animal husbandry remarks to get his audience to laugh. The funniest part of his act is just the way he handles himself, he’s clumsy and funny with a hometown-boy persona, and this just makes the crowd howl with laughter.
Another personality, from a very different perspective, is Steven Nevets, up-and-coming stand-up comedian with a vulgar mouth whose act is comprised of insults and sexual connotations. Steven while practiced and experienced in the field of comedy is also quite deft at causing embarrassment to his audience participants (some of those whom he kills – it’s up to him who he chooses) by calling them out and ridiculing them publicly. Those not invited on stage, find his X-rated Don Rickles act quite funny.
He heads to Lake Geneva also, but purposely, with intent to enter the comedy contest. He follows the trail to stardom while leaving a trail of his own. Steven has a method of choice that he uses to disarm his intended victims – poison. A concoction he puts together all himself, made from chemicals commonly found on a farm where the inhabitants have need for pest and vermin elimination. Steven also performs a little slight-of-hand on stage, dropping small crystals of his wonder-drug into the open containers that his usual drunk and unsuspecting fans carry with them.
The web of law enforcement that gets involved in the search for a serial killer has been brought together by an internet database for criminal identification. Carl Schmidt, small town police chief of San Jose, Illinois; Detective Wade Murphy, homicide division in Peoria; and Sheriff Richard Hackney of the Lake Geneva police; combine their efforts to track and apprehend the person or persons guilty of killing at least three known victims in the recent months and for mass poisonings (he flipped it into the corn pots) of attendees at the Lake Geneva Corn-Boil.
A couple dead from gunshot wounds and a young lady beaten to death after attending a comedy club performance were later found to have been poisoned prior to their deaths. When similar toxins turn up in the small dairy-land community, policemen scramble to assemble. The contest begins as scheduled and laughter ensues right away, but before the final act, the stage is set for terror and a very unsuspecting crowd of fun-lovers becomes exposed to a very dark side of comedy.
