After telling my four-year-old granddaughter that Shay doesn’t talk, doesn’t run, can’t chew or enjoy candy, she “Grandma, so why did God created him?”. This has been my exact question my entire life with him. Nitza discovered that openness and empathy are remedies for rejection .and shame. Her life story with Shay is a story of her struggle with shame and rejection. Throughout her struggle for a life for her and her son, Nitza discovered her hidden strength. And since then, she dedicates her time to helping others discover their own strength.
Nitza's story in "Alone” is a real gut-wrencher. It's a memoir that dives deep into the complexities of motherhood, especially when things get tough. Nitza takes you on her journey of self-discovery as she deals with loss, societal pressures, and the fierce love she has for her son, Shay.
The first chapter sets the stage by exploring the trauma passed down from her mother, a Holocaust survivor. This helps you understand the emotional silence that surrounds Nitza's own experience as a mom.
The second chapter dives right into the heart of the story: Nitza's relationship with Shay. Shay has developmental disabilities, and Nitza doesn't shy away from showing the emotional ups and downs of raising a child with special needs. It's a rollercoaster ride – isolation, judgment from others, but also incredible moments of connection and fierce love. You get a real feel for their unique bond.
The three part tackles the agonizing decision of putting Shay in a residential facility. Nitza wrestles with guilt, societal pressures, and the reality of her limitations in caring for Shay at home. Her journey of acceptance and the bittersweet struggle to stay connected with Shay, even though he's no longer home, are portrayed with raw honesty. The story goes way more indepth but I’ll leave that for you to read.
This is more than just a memoir, it's a call for empathy and understanding. Nitza sheds light on the unseen struggles faced by parents of children with disabilities. It's a powerful reminder of a mother's unwavering love and the incredible strength of the human spirit in the face of hardship.
If you're looking for a book that will make you feel all the feels, make you think, and leave you feeling more compassionate, then "Alone: The Power of Motherly Love" is a must-read.
