I recently read "How to Survive When the Grid Goes Down" by Anthony Bennett, and I gotta say, it’s eye-opening. The book's packed with useful tips on how to prep for a world without public utilities. It covers everything from securing water and food to finding shelter and staying healthy. It even gets into how to stay connected and find your way around without the usual modern tools. That said, if the power were out for more than a few days, I'd still be in trouble. No internet? Yikes.
What makes this book stand out is its all-around approach. It doesn't just stick to basic survival skills like water purification and food storage. It dives deep into psychological readiness, leadership, and building a community. It’s not just about keeping your body alive, but also about staying mentally strong and socially connected. Plus, there’s a section on renewable energy and tactical training, which adds another layer of preparedness.
One part of the book really hit home for me. Bennett talks about how crucial the power grid is for everything we do. It’s more than just keeping the lights on. It’s the backbone of our society, from hospitals to emergency services to transportation. The idea of losing all that makes you think about how reliant we are on this invisible network.
Overall, this book is timely and super relevant, especially with the increasing talks about climate change and power outages. It’s well-researched, easy to follow, and engaging, even if you’re new to the topic. It made me rethink my own emergency plans. If you’re looking for practical survival strategies and ways to keep your mind in check during a crisis, you’ll get a lot out of it too.
The grid-down information was beneficial. There is plenty to learn from and evaluate your current plan. However, the author glossed over details, such as the trapping mentioned in the food section. It is here that the details were lacking, and many of us needed elaboration. What type of trap (s) and then explain the process. This was a perfect time to expand upon Hamm radios. Radios are particularly important for communication, and we cannot assume that everyone is familiar with survival 101. Otherwise, the author was easy to follow and did an excellent job educating the masses.
The book contains everything you need to know to survive when the grid goes down. I thought the chapter on communication was good to know because there is no communication without electricity. Or is there…. There are lots of things to do to prepare and starting now is good- make sure you remember your pets too!
So many of these books are full of generic material. But this author had some incredible information in here that showed his interest and passion in surviving if the grid goes down. I especially like the section on water purification and how to great energy like the treadmill idea. Very useful book. Exceptionally researched.
Explores necessary skills for survival if the grid goes down and goes beyond the obvious food and water. It also includes negotiation, leadership skills, building a network, ethical consideration, and more. Great read for those who always want to be prepared.
Hard to imagine this book being useful to anyone unless they’ve never considered the topic of losing our power grid. It’s basically a list of topics with the barest description and zero actionable information. If you are new to this topic perhaps it would be useful but there are tons of similar books that actually teach you ‘how’ to do these things.
Wow! This guidebook is not only timely and relevant but thought provoking. Taking a holistic approach to survival if the grid were to go down, this book addresses not only physical concerns but psychological ones as well. A great resource for the masses!
Wow! I feel so prepared after reading this book! Although the hope is that the grid NEVER shuts down, this book gives you an exhaustive list of what to do just in case it happens. It covers everything from first aid, to practical sustainable needs as well as addressing any emotional distress you may encounter if the grid ever shut down. I found myself creating a shopping list on Amazon of all of the things I need to purchase for just such an occasion. This book is the poster child for “better safe than sorry”, and a must have for any American family wanting to thrive in these unstable times.
This book provides a great overview of things to consider if the grid goes down, without going too far into details about the topics. For someone new to prepping, this book provides many different subjects the reader can choose to research "how-to's" in depth later (like water purification and fire starting). I think it's a great book to help acclimate newbies and would recommend it to teens in home school education also.
