Advanced copy and sequel to Connected to the Sea.
I liked this better then the first book. I realize you were setting the characters but they seem to have more depth in this book. All my unanswered questions were answered in this book. I loved how Sydney dealt with Coen's ex-girl friend. She could have been bitchy but she handled it with grace. Her best friend John..... Well, I think she cared more for his feelings than Coen's in dealing with her attraction to Coen. But in the end, she put Coen and his feelings first and it showed she was growing up. It was also surprising how she took the news of the relationship of Coen and Dr. Goldstein. Shows Sydney's growing maturity. And finally, the confrontation with her own demon in the form of her own family. I thought she was going to back down and become a shell of herself again, but you made her into a confident and self-assured woman. The real surprise was Coen. He showed himself to be a caring, fiercely loyal and loving character who realized early what a treasure Sydney really was and would fight for her. Loved this ending and hated that there wasn't more to the book.

** I received an ARC of this book for an honest review**
I was quite caught up in Sydney and Coen's love story from the first book and was really anxious to see what would happen when Sydney's terrible family showed up on the island. Although I really did like this sequel a lot, I didn't love it as much as the first book. It felt like it was a lot of sex and some of the same childish antics by Coen's EX that filled this story up and then when Sydney finally tells Coen about the real reason she's afraid of her family, it didn't have as much UMPH! as I had hoped for. Believe me, there were quite a few fireworks and violent scenes when the family came for Thanksgiving, but then everything just seemed to get all neatly tied up in a pretty bow with a sweet HEA ending.
I think the YA reader and those with a taste for a more fantasy type love story will really appreciate this romantic book and EL Todd definitely knows how to write some super steamy encounters! I read this short book in a matter of hours. Enjoy on a quiet afternoon =)

I'm not sure what to say about this one. I had a hard time with it and not sure if it was because if the series i just ended or if it's the style of writing. I absolutely loved another book by this author so I'm not exactly sure. I didn't feel the depth of the characters and it felt more like instalove. There were also some corny lines that I had to roll my eyes at. I will still read more from this author but this one didn't work for me :(

Sexy, Gripping and Intense Read!
This hot and sexy New Adult romance, set in the beautiful island of Hawaii is way more than it first seems. It not only examines love and lust and the importance of trust and friendship, but also delves into the darker issues of loss, guilt, jealousy, violence and abuse.
The chemistry between Sydney and Coen just sizzles off the page. Early on we see how Sydney is attracted to Coen, who has the reputation of being a player. When they are unexpectedly brought together in the role of tutor and pupil their mutual attraction ignites and they are drawn together in some scorching and passionate scenes. Coen wants to make their relationship official, but the situation is complicated due to Sydney finally realising that her best friend Henry is deeply in love with her and she fears that knowing she is with another will destroy him. Added to this complication is Coen's ex-girlfriend, who is convinced that Coen is hers and wants him back. The first book also hints at issues from Sydney's past which haunt her and resurface in the second instalment. Can she accept Coen as her one and only before it is too late and can she trust him with her secrets? The road to Sydney and Coen's HEA is certainly fraught with difficulties.
Sydney is a role model for all young women. She is a star pupil, good at her job and loves the island, the sea and its wildlife. She also values the ties of friendship and is especially concerned about how Henry will react when he finds out about her relationship with Coen. Although she appears strong she has a hidden vulnerability due to events in the past, which we come to comprehend more fully as the series progresses.
Coen is simply drop dead gorgeous! He is an alpha male with a big heart and falls deeply for Sydney, attracted to her beauty inside and out. I really felt his frustration with how Sydney dealt with Henry's feelings for her and the fact that she concealed their relationship, although I came to understand her own personal reasons for it as the plot unfolded. The love making scenes between Sydney and Coen were super hot, sensual and descriptive (very little being left to the imagination) and make this series definitely for readers over 18. At times the sex fest was such that I had to pause and take a break and catch a breath to calm my racing heart!
The way the author described the characters and their behaviour was realistic overall. The pacing was good as was the story arc and romance. I also liked the element of suspense - what was Sydney afraid of from her past and would it come back to haunt her and would she finally get together with Coen? The secondary characters were also well defined and I enjoyed the descriptions of the island and its wildlife, especially the scenes on the beach and in the sea. The series is a great read any time of the year to bring some sunshine and romance into your life and I recommend it to adult readers, particularly those who love New Adult reads. Copies of these books were given to me by the author for the purpose of a fair and honest review.

3.5 stars to a sweet, sexy and charming novel set in lovely Oahu, Hawaii.
Coen shows all the signs of a sexy bad boy with a smart mouth. Sydney is straight laced, smart and strong. With a family life she’s trying to put in her past and a recent breakup with a cheating ex-boyfriend her mind is screaming to stay away from everything bad A.K.A. Coen no matter how attractive he is. But life has other plans in mind for her, because now she’s not just his tutor she’s also his personal defense student.
Forced to be in contact with each other, neither ignore their mutual attraction at the same time learning that what’s under the surface is more appealing than their good looks. But even after fate brought them together, life is not that easy. There are external factors threaten their instant bond.
This a very light, easy read. Don’t misunderstand, it’s a full length novel told from both POVs, but it has a fast pace, an appealing storyline and dialogue that makes the pages fly by almost effortlessly. The descriptions of their beautiful surroundings gave fuel to my imagination while placing the story in the most romantic, fun and exotic places.
The hero and heroine have very likeable personalities. Coen has a tough exterior but is also very sensitive, attentive with a very clear vision of what he wants for himself. He’s book boyfriend material all around. Sydney, besides being strong and smart, is selfless and caring, but she takes that a bit to the extreme, which gave the book a high school drama feeling at times. Her reactions were a tad immature, especially when it came to her relationship with best friend Henry.
And although the book has all the ingredients of a great read, I feel like we didn’t get enough depth into plot and characters, leaving me with too many unanswered questions. I still enjoyed it very much, and it gave me a great sweet fix and I hope that E.L. continues writing a gives us more of her loving characters (shout out for Henry anyone?)

Yep! Yep! this one is certainly another 10.... maybe even a 15!
I was soooo hoping that snotty ex would get her's and ohhh yep she sure did...pure elegance Syd, you handled her with the grace and poise of a true lady. no need to wonder why Coen would have chosen you over anyone.
Coen I was wondering when ur alpha male was gonna emerge :-D I must say he knows exactly when to bring it out and when to pull it back...Every women prays she would be loved this way!
Henry the poor tortured male BFF that loves Syd is finally seeing he needs to move forward..man I hope he finds love soon! (HUGE hint E.L. lol)
as for her "family" I use that term very loosely, she was far more poised then I would have been..nothing but pieces of poor white trash! and that "mother" of hers...NO person much less man would even attempt to speak to any of my kids that way, if he wanted to keep his teeth.....
this one is surely dialed up several notches in the "HOT" department! but it was described in such a way that it didn't leave you thinking "good lord can we just get back to the story" and believe me I've read plenty of those....and you could always feel the genuine love whether it was "f***ing" or "making love"! (their terms not mine LOL)

I was given this beta ARC version in exchange for an honest review. As with book one, I enjoyed the plot The overall plot was well done and the perfect conclusion to the original Coen-Sydney storyline started in the prior book.
The writing style is unusual enough I'll remark on it. Many books can be classified as character-driven or story-driven, but I think this gets its own honorary classification of dialog-driven. There are lengthy passages of dialog that tell the story (rather than having characters give the readers impressions of what they are thinking, the reader is 'told' the story). As with the first book, sometimes the speakers are not identified and communicate often in rapid, single-line dialog, so the reader needs to follow who says what (although, the author did a better job in book 2 of letting readers know who is speaking).
This was a quick read, and resolved issues addressed in the prior book of the series. As this was a beta copy, I have disregarded spelling errors, although, they were few. Great story, some young-people drama I could have done without, but it fit the personality of the characters. While I prefer more description of surroundings and scene progression, the overall story is a great read.

For some reason I am in a big romance kick right now. It might be because of my husband not being around lately. Soon though! Anyways, onto with the review on this quick read.
BREAKING THROUGH THE WAVES is the sequel story to CONNECTED BY THE SEA which features the hero Coen and heroine Sydney. The first book was really a set up of them and how they came to be with a slight bit of conflict. This book gathers up the hints of trouble from CONNECTED BY THE SEA and displays them perfectly.
The two books could be great as one single entity, but the break between is good to have. The second book is thriving in the drama with Coen's ex-girlfriend and Sydney's family in the mix. It's heartwrenching and heartwarming, showing the degree that the two characters have changed since the first book.
Like the first, the second gives off steam in the sexual manner. It's a lot of sex for a young couple, but I wasn't complaining. Neither were the characters. The setting was still Hawaii and there was more description of it, so that was great!
All in all, this is a good book and if you wanted to pick up the first one you have to pick this one up as well. Just so you get everything tackled and resolved.

Wow, I loved the first book Connected by the sea but this book was even better, the first book was just a taster of what Sydney's past was like. In the second book Breaking through the waves answers all questions about Sydney's life.
Coen and Sydney are great together you can tell that they love each other deeply and that they would do anything for each other. There are some great parts of the book that I was shouting "YES", I won't say anything you will have to read this book to find out.

This is the sequel in the series and I loved it as much as the first. I have really enjoyed reading these dialogue styled novels.
I also thought that perhaps everyone should take self defence lessons. Maybe it should be compulsory in secondary schools. Too many people regardless of their sex are bullied and abused either by family, boy or girlfriend or just the bully in the classroom.
I love that the two marine biologists compare themselves to seahorses. " You know sea horses mate for life, right?"
"Do you want to be my sea horse for life?" " I assumed I already was"
Coen's love is the glue to his frame. I love cheesy quotes.
In this we find out Syd's secret and what she's had to endure for most of her life. Syd should really have been a wreck , but her character is brave and strong and she has Coen's love and protection.
Does her family spending Thanks giving with them endanger her life? "She felt the touch of cold against her neckline. " " It burned slightly and slithered across her skin. A snake was crawling across her,.........
Can Syd defend herself?......

Breaking through the Waves is the sequel to a fantastic book Connected by the Sea. I was so eager to continue Syd and Coen's adventure that read this book without stopping. It was quiet a fast and wonderful read. I couldn't imagine that something could be better than the first book but this was. I liked it immensely. Just what I wanted and needed.
"And when the dreams that haunt you come and frighten you, it's okay to be scared. It's okay to reach for me."

I loved this book just like the first one. I couldnt wait to get my hands on it and when the author offered it up for an ARC copy there was no way I was turning it down.
I laughed, cried, and got angry while reading this book. I was extremely curious as to what was going to hPpen with Sydneys family and was bit shocked with what Sydney admitted to Coen. It was such a tense time reading the parts where her family came to visit, but I loved how the author played out the whole thing. She just made Coen 10x sexier with how he handled everything in this story!
I was angry with Audrey in this book but Sydney being the sweetheart that she is, always has to see the good in everyone. I found myself forgiving Audrey while reading this just because of Sydney. I agree with her methods and was glad she saw the best in her.
I could go on for days but I just LOVED this story!!! I absolutely love when an author can make you feel every emotion while reading!

I laughed, cried, and got angry while reading this book. I was extremely curious as to what was going to hPpen with Sydneys family and was bit shocked with what Sydney admitted to Coen. It was such a tense time reading the parts where her family came to visit, but I loved how the author played out the whole thing. She just made Coen 10x sexier with how he handled everything in this story!
I was angry with Audrey in this book but Sydney being the sweetheart that she is, always has to see the good in everyone. I found myself forgiving Audrey while reading this just because of Sydney. I agree with her methods and was glad she saw the best in her.
I could go on for days but I just LOVED this story!!! I absolutely love when an author can make you feel every emotion while reading!

*TRIGGER WARNING * Domestic Abuse, Child Abuse, Sexual Assault, Child Sexual Assault
I've marked this down primarily because I feel the repeated mentions of domestic and sexual abuse sufferers as being "weak" is not only wholly inaccurate but also incredibly damaging. It is not weak to be assaulted or abused as a child. It is not weak to be assaulted or abused as an adult. It is not weak to not be able to escape from your abuser even when "given the chance." Trivialising abuse in this way is not helpful and is not only damaging to those individuals who are or have suffered abuse, but it is also incredibly hurtful.
The appalling attitude towards abuse sufferers is not the only thing wrong with this book. All of the suspense from book one is replaced with endless, mindnumbing sex scenes where the reader is expected to believe that Sydney and Coen basically never have an off day and each session is perfect from start to finish, no matter how quickly it occurs after the previous session. In all honesty, this just created boredom, which I'm sure was not the intended emotional response!
The attitude and behaviour of Coen towards his ex, Audrey, was also troubling and unnecessary, and it made for some uncomfortable reading. Particularly in light of the trauma Sydney had been through and confided in him. The aggressive and controlling behaviour he showed were certainly red flags.
Finally, I didn't see the point of bringing religion into the story, although only mentioned in passing. It was an unnecessary inclusion and brought nothing to the story whatsoever (except perhaps yet another eye roll 🙄).
Overall, it's not only a really disappointing sequel but one that is particularly damaging to abuse sufferers.

The book kept saying the h was so strong and great, but she came across as weak and unsure. I mean she trained to be this strong fighter who could take care of herself, but when it came time to show that she always backed down.

Wow I thought there was drama in the first book that is nothing compared to the drama in this book. I could not believe the games that a junior in college was playing seriously it seemed like they were in high school all over again. I loved Sydney and her way of thinking, how she did not like violence but come on how much more could she take after what Aubrey, Coen’s ex-girlfriend, did to her. I would have slapped the crap out of her. I felt so bad for Coen and how he felt that it was entire his fault but loved him even more for protecting what was his. Only that he couldn’t be with her at all times. I have to say one more thing and that is Sydney and Coen have amazing friends that gathered together to help Sydney in a way that meant the world to her.
Sorry about that I needed to get my thoughts written down before they left my head. I love to read and write down my thoughts because I get so engrossed into reading. So here in the second book in this series it seems that Coen and Sydney’s relationship has flourished. Henry is still trying to get over the idea that Sydney will never be able to see him more than a bestfriend. Sydney still has issues expressing how she feels for Coen in front of Henry. She needs to quit doing that she needs to live her life and stop trying to please everyone around her. Sydney has finally opened up to Coen about her secret but hasn’t told him everything. How could she think that he would look at her differently, or not love her because of her past? She has to remember she did nothing wrong and it is in the past. At times I seem a little lost with Sydney when I think that she is going to lash out with anger because of a situation she doesn’t. I totally don’t get it but she is a better person than most.
Finally Coen’s hears her secret but he still doesn’t know everything. How could she think that he would not love her because of her past? If only it would stay all peachy and sunny but of course not. The happily ever after hardly ever comes so soon without something dramatic happening and her past finally comes during Thanksgiving weekend. Only this time she starts pulling away from Coen and he knows why. Sydney is a strong woman that now knows how to defend herself but will she freeze at that moment or will she actually fight back. I so hated her mom for not standing up to her husband and defend her daughter. A daughter that did not deserve what her step father and brother did to her. No one deserves what she went through bust most of all she needed to forgive herself for what happened to her dad and know that she didn’t deserve what those awful people did to her.
Breaking Through the Waves was beautifully written and flowed smoothly. Just like the first book I found myself smiling through it. My emotions were all over the place, the sadness, the amount of anger I felt towards the people that hurt Sydney. I also felt joy, happiness for the amount of love they had for each other. The characters relationship was stronger in this story but Sydney was still leery about her relationship with Coen. It’s not that she did not love him it’s that she thought that she wasn’t good enough for him that she was tainted because of her family. I love how real this story feels and how I connected even more with them. The pace of this story is perfect and totally loved the epilogue, sure it could have been longer but it was no problem how Ms. Todd left it.
I totally recommend this read to any reader. What I loved the best of this book was that Sydney finally realized that she had a family, a real family that would be there for her and she for them. I can’t wait for Henry’s story.

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Breaking Through the Waves is book two in the new Hawaiian Crush series by E.L. Todd. I enjoyed the start of Coen and Sydney's romance in book one and was looking forward to getting some lingering questions answered in book two. Please don't read this review if you haven't read book one as my review may hold spoilers for that book.
Summary:
Coen and Sydney had a bumpy ride in book one, but the situation with Henry is as resolved as it can be and their finally together, and not secretly. Relations are somewhat strained, but everyone is moving on if not swiftly, surely. Even though Sydney has chosen the love of her life and is happier than she's ever been, there are still things Coen doesn't know about her and shadows that pass through her eyes. The love and passion they share for each other is stronger than they can imagine and Sydney worries that Coen will give it all up and leave her when he learns where she came from. Before she can focus on finding a way to share her past, Sydney must first contend with Coen's jealous ex, Audrey. Dodging childish pranks and nasty verbal skirmishes becomes a full-time job, not to mention stressful and hurtful. Coen can't believe he dated someone so awful and even thought of giving even a molecule of his heart to her. He also worries that Sydney won't want to put up with the stress of fighting for him, so he determines to do whatever he needs to, to keep Audrey from causing Sydney anymore pain. On top of the horrendous bullying, Sydney has gotten confirmation that her family is coming from the mainland to visit for Thanksgiving. All she can think is how Coen will feel about her when he learns what her family's like, and the memories of pain, defeat, and guilt that once overwhelmed her in her youth. Coen and Sydney's love beats strong and true along with support from their closest friends, but their true fight will be against those who wish to beat them down, make them feel like nothing, and want to tear them apart. It will take a special trust and inner strength from both to guide them through these trials and tribulations so that they may have their happily ever after and the chance at a future that's bright and beautiful.
I had some trouble getting into the story. The beginning, for me, held too many sex scenes and not enough of the story. I like a good, steamy sex scene, and these were some sweet ones, but it felt like every other page was them going at it and we had the full detail every time. I think I would have liked it more if subsequent matings after the first couple, were alluded to. Sydney started out pretty strong and she was fearless when she faced down Audrey, but she being so incredibly convinced Coen deserved better started to get annoying. He showed how he felt without a doubt and yet she still did everything she could to push him away. It irritated me and I wanted to slap her at times. Lol. Coen, again, was a great hero. He did everything right and his need and determination to protect Sydney was not only sweet but sexy as all hell. We didn't get to see much of the supporting cast from book one, but what we saw, mostly Henry, was good. I really can't wait to get Henry's book so we can put his broken heart back together. I did enjoy the end of Coen and Sydney's romance, but I think I liked book one better. I'm not positive I would have split the story in two, if I was the author, but they still had solid story lines and passion-filled romance. Both books are nice, easy reads that would be ideal as a palate cleanser between two heavier, angst-filled novels. <3

I was given this book as an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. I was given this before the book was divided into two so this is a review for both "Connected by the Sea" and "Breaking through the Waves"
I absolutely loved this book! I am so thankful for E.L. Todd for giving me an ARC copy of this book because I enjoyed it so, so much. I could not let go as soon as I started it.
The story was so beautiful. It made me laugh, angry, sassy, sad and had my heart breaking to the point of tears. E.L. Todd is definitely an amazing author. The events that happened in this book kept me interested and reading well after midnight. The story is so absolutely amazing and beautiful it touched my heart and I am sure will touch other's. And don't even get me started with the characters.
Sydney: She is so strong and determined in life she could serve as a role model. I absolutely loved her from the very start. Although she was broken from a very young age she picked herself up and made a life for herself which many cannot do. And not only did she do that but she became a wonderful person out of it. Sydney is selfless to the point of insecurity (which is totally understandable in her case.) It broke my heart to see what she would do for those she cares for.
Coen: OMFG! He is definitely a keeper. He is such a misunderstood character due to psycho exes and gossipers in their college. His whole reputation was ruined because of them which makes it hard for him at times but he has such a good heart not to make a big deal out of it and ignore it. It annoys me how he's the exact opposite of what everyone says he is. He is sweet, romantic, caring and loyal. Anyone who would have Coen in their life is lucky. He is the best! (I think I have another book boyfriend here.)
And Sydney's best friend, Henry, he is such a sweet guy as well and deserves a nice girl and a happily ever after. Yes, he did seem a bit clingy and obsessive at times, in the end he's a good guy who deserves a good future. Hopefully E.L. plans on making a book on him and his future with a smart and beautiful girl who will love him.
Now, to Sydney and Coen's relationship. They are perfect for each other! Seriously. But I do have to admit their relationship went serious pretty fast. It actually escalated from a 'not date' pretty fast. They were getting gropey and a bit intimate in the next hour or so then the next day Coen is Sydney's boyfriend. Sorry of I think this went a bit too fast but... it did come pretty abruptly. I felt there were not transition there other than their lust for each other (not that I'm complaining about that.)
Other than that little thing in the book I didn't exactly like, everything else was just wonderful! I think I'm in love with this book. I definitely need more Sydney and Coen in the near future.

I'm sorry, I need a minute. I need to lower the AC because I am boiling... this book is HOT HOT SMOLDERINGLY HOT! WOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Amazing Amazing Amazing book! If I could I would give it more stars on goodreads.com. What great character developments. I cried, I got raging pissed, I was excited, I laughed! Which in all 400+ books I have read I may have only laughed out loud maybe 5 times... that's saying something! :)
Characters are LOVABLE. Even more HATEABLE. And then you have the occational few that you hate to love or love to hate or HATE TO BLOODY THEIR FACES HATE! This was a serious rollarcoaster book, however, it didn't leave me emotionally drained. I can function after it which is nice!
Our heroin is Sydney and our smoldering hot hero is Coen. What amazing chemistry these two have! From their first meeting to the last damn page. Its nonstop passion (not always in the lets get it on way) but just passion for each other for what they do for a living for what they want to do when they finish school.
What I loved most about this book was Sydney is an amazing heroin and such a great influence on the youth of today. She makes her life better regardless of her past. She gives her past the finger and moves on, tries to improve her self esteem. Its very inspiring to watch, even if I am not longer of that age.
So obviously by the cover this is a love story. This was a little of a predictable love story... which I don't mind at all. But at times it tossed you some curve balls that I wasn't sure it was going to end well for our couple... Syden or Codney? Nonetheless, I can see this book giving hope to the hopeless. The situations in this book are rather ripped by Law & Order SVU. I can and have seen this happen to people and sometimes it doesn't turn out happy endings. Not everyone had a wonderful childhood but not all thos rotten children from those bad childhoods turn into crackheads and pimps. They turn there lives apart and I like that message from this book. With that being said... this book is seriously adjust yourself because you are getting uncomfortable in the nether regions kind of HOT.

If you are familiar with E.L. Todd and enjoy her writing as much as I do, then "Connected by the Sea" will not disappoint! I once again have been given the honor of reading and reviewing another book for this wonderful author and could not be happier.
Sydney has secrets that nobody knows about and that she promises herself she will take to her grave. She holds guilt from a tragic accident that happened as a kid, and believes that anything negative she has been handed in life she deserves as punishment. After graduation, she runs off to Hawaii to get as far as her life as possible and to study to be a marine biologist. Sydney has a bright future ahead of her, but with a haunting past and an ex that shattered her heart to pieces, she is missing a piece of herself that she may never get back.
Coen is the sexy bad boy that is completely misunderstood. With a manipulative and determined ex girlfriend always after him, he is easily irritated and everyone thinks he is the bad guy. When he needs tutoring for one of his classes he meets Sydney and knows at that moment that he has to know her. Coen can see right through Sydney's facade and knows she holds dark secrets deep down and is determined to be there to help heal her. Coen is one of the sweetest characters I have come across. He is so honest and gentle and loves with his whole heart. Sydney is one of the most selfless female characters I have run across in a long time and would do anything for anyone. She never wants to hurt anyone physically or emotionally, and will give up her own happiness before she hurts a friend. Although it takes time to break through some barriers that Sydney carries, I love how open these characters are with one another. There was never drama due to lack of communication, lies, or head games. I am not going to lie, but some of there open communication was hot and tingle worthy! There was a lot of sex in some places and I could have personally done with a little less in some places, but hey I was young once and Sydney has a serious sexual appetite!
Overall I give this story 4 stars. "Connected by the Sea" has passion, action, heartbreak, and self discovery. Everything that in my personal opinion makes an excellent story! I cannot wait to see what everyone else thinks of this book! Cohen is definitely serious book boyfriend material and he has stolen my heart for sure. I cannot wait to see what is in store for us in the future with these two.

She holds guilt from a tragic accident that happened as a kid, and believes that anything negative she has been handed in life she deserves as punishment. After graduation, she runs off to Hawaii to get as far as her life as possible and to study to be a marine biologist. Sydney has a bright future ahead of her, but with a haunting past and an ex that shattered her heart to pieces, she is missing a piece of herself that she may never get back.
Coen is the sexy bad boy that is completely misunderstood. With a manipulative and determined ex girlfriend always after him, he is easily irritated and everyone thinks he is the bad guy. When he needs tutoring for one of his classes he meets Sydney and knows at that moment that he has to know her. Coen can see right through Sydney's facade and knows she holds dark secrets deep down and is determined to be there to help heal her. Coen is one of the sweetest characters I have come across. I received Connected by the Sea as an ARC from the author. Breaking Through the Waves was the second half of my copy of Connected By the Sea. Here is my review...

This novel follows the sweet love story of Sydney and Coen. Sydney, a college Junior, inspires to become a marine biologist. Sydney is a beautiful young woman, but she doesn’t see herself the way others see her. She has a rough past that she refuses to tell anyone about. She has two friends, Henry and Nancy. Everyone else she pretty much stays away from.
Coen is also a college Junior who is studying marine biology. He has those around him thinking he is a “pig”, but is that really him? He is a personal trainer with multiple black belts. When he fails an important test he is forced by his father to take on a tutor. That tutor turns out to be Sydney.
Sydney and Coen are instantly physically attracted to one another. Coen thinks Henry is Sydney’s boyfriend and Sydney thinks Coen has a girlfriend. Are they each wrong about the other? Can they overlook the attraction and just be study buddies? When they figure out each other is single can they agree to be together? Will Sydney allow herself to open up to someone she just met? Can Coen agree to be Sydney’s “secret”?
I really loved this story. I thought it was well told. I really felt for both Sydney and Coen. Sydney always wanted to put other people’s feelings before her own. Coen only wanted Sydney to be happy. Coen was so sweet; he made me smile, a lot. The sex scenes were so hot at times I thought my kindle was going to burst into flames, especially when the author is describing Coen and his hmm….”assets”. I loved how protective Coen was of Sydney. He always put her first.
I really felt for Henry. He too stole a small piece of my heart. There were times I wished I could reach through my kindle and give him a hug. He really was a great friend, an overall great guy actually.
There were some small spelling issues but nothing bad enough to take away from the writing or the story. It was something I could overlook because the story was just that good.
I look forward to other books by E. L. Todd. I have become a fan! I highly recommend this book to family and friends. I also recommend this book to romance lovers like me.

This was a beautiful continuation of Connected by the Sea!! I totally loved this book and zipped right through it in a few hours. Ms. Todd was gracious enough to provided me an early copy to read and review. This book made me love both books as if they were one. It picks up right where book one left off. Any questions left from book one are answered in this book so you have to read it!!!!
Sydney and Coen are going strong in their relationship. Lots more lovin in this book!!! ;) Henry and Sydney are trying to find their way to a new "normal" for their friendship, but you can still feel his pain of accepting that Sydney will never be his. We still don't know much about Nancy but hopefully in the future that will change. And let's not forget Audrey, Coen's ex-girlfriend. She is very active in this storyline. Sore loser does not even begin to cover it!!!!! Sydney reacted much better than I would have....Crazy Beotch and I would have had more than words!!! :) I did love how none of the Audrey craziness made Coen and Sydney doubt their love though. That is especially hard in a newer relationship, but did not seem to faze Syd and Coen at all. Sometimes I get tired of the yo-yo feelings and insecurities....but of course, those insecurities did make an appearance later in the book when Coen met the cause of Sydney's terror. I understood it and was soooooo happy when Coen didn't let her push him away. He made it perfectly clear that they would live this life together.....no matter what!!!! And boy....did he mean it!!!!
She is his Seahorse and he is hers.....for life!!! ;) (makes my heart pitter patter!!!!)
You really have to read this book to understand the beauty of unconditional love....we should all be so lucky to feel it!!
We did get to see more of the world they live in....Hawaii and all it has to offer.

4.5 to 5 STARS!
This is not the first book I was able to read from E.L. Todd. I came to except a certain standard from this author, and, well, she did not disappoint! I loved this book! Once again, the writing style of the author is so smart that it makes the character come alive for the readers! I was in Hawaii and falling for the lovely Coen!
From the first chapter onward, I was caught up in the story! The chemistry between Coen and Sydney was almost tangible. Their relationship was so real and intense. One minor criticism is how fast they got together, in my opinion. One day they barely knew each other and the next they are in a serious relationship. (that is why I am hesitating between a 4.5 and a 5!) Once this hurtle is passed, the pacing of the story feels very natural. There is still a real development of the characters. The rest gave the result of a very believable relationship, they are so sweet to one another!
The author was also able to treat darker subjects in an effective way. There was a very good balance between the light issues and the dark issues. This book is not a dark read, but it does treat serious subjects. There is a wonderful message of encouragement behind the story; It is about conquering your worst fear. It is also about not letting your past define who you become. I cannot say more without spoiling anything!
Sydney: So strong and resilient. She has the capacity of revenging against a lot of injustices done to her but decides to rise above. Very courageous girl and very generous. She did not annoy me (except with the whole issue with Henry, that took too long for her to get it together, good thing Coen pushed it like he did)! Loved her!
Coen: Best book boyfriend! So supportive and protective! He is also very attentive to Sydney and patient. Sexy!
Henry: Poor sweetheart, he broke my heart! I was actually hoping he'd get the girl at first (before I realized how wonderful Coen and Sydney are together). I hope he gets his HEA!
Also this is a steamy read! Give it a go, you wont regret it!

BREAKING THROUGH THE WAVES by E.L. Todd was every bit as wonderful as I'd hoped it would be. The sequel to Connected by the Sea tells us more of Coen and Sydney's love story. In CbtS they found their happiness with each other and fell in love. Breaking Through the Waves is about the life they are making together and the strength of their mutual love.
As in CbtS, Coen is my favorite character. The perfect devoted, kind, unselfish, protective, voraciously sexy and deliciously sexual alpha male lover we all wish were telling us we were the love of his life, his seahorse. At least, I know I want a man like him (just a little more age appropriate, though). He sees his whole future with Sydney and realizes early on he doesn't want to spend another day without her by his side. I also admire the maturity he shows in dealing with Sydney's best friend Henry, who is obviously still in love with her. And with how he realizes how necessary it is for Sydney to face her fears regarding her family herself if she is to ever truly get past them, when all he really wants to do is protect her and handle it all himself.
Sydney is still struggling a bit with insecurity and self-worth issues brought on by her devastating upbringing, especially when her poor excuse for a family shows up. She wavers a little, but the strong woman she has become shines through in the end. I loved the Audrey (Coen's ex) story line, because Sydney consistently showed the true lady she has become by handling Audrey with elegance, class and compassion when everyone else just wanted to beat her down.
All in all this story was a testament of the kind of true, deep, enduring, abiding love where you just can't get enough of each other (sexually and otherwise) because you know you've found your soulmate and you know will be life long, that Coen and Sydney were lucky enough to find while still young. Just like seahorses. *sigh*

I received a copy from the author for my honest review.
I really enjoyed how this story progressed from the first book. While the first one really was how they fell in love the second really focused on how them growing as a couple. They face challenges much more serious than in the first book that can wither make or break a relationship. I mean don't get me wrong there will be enough steamy scenes to get you through ;)
Coen and Sydney are settling well into their new "public" relationship status. They are still trying to be respectful of Henry's feelings but seem to be happy with how their relationship is progressing. Event though everything is great right now Sydney can't help but think how her family and her past are going to affect Coen and not in a good way. We learn a lot more about what happened in Sydney's past and about her insecurities because of it.
I don't want to give away the story but I just loved how united they are as a couple, it seemed like no matter what happened he would be by her side and protect her. I also really liked how strong and independent Sydney is because even though Coen was willing to be her rock she wasn't afraid to be that for herself. For me this story was just as much about a girl finding her way to break from her past as it was a love story.
It was a quick steamy read with a good story line, much like the first book there is just one thing that kept me from giving it a 5/5. I just wanted a little bit more. When I read books I really like to get inside a characters head and feel like I'm living their story, because this author gives you the perspective from both Sydney and Coen it felt like the author was just telling me the story at some points instead of really letting me become part of it.
That being said I really enjoyed Sydney and Coen's story and look forward to more from this author!!

Beautiful, Love Story....I was gifted an ARC for an honest review...
We meet Sydney Quartz who is working as a janitor at the Aquarium of Hawaiian Sea Life..She is studying at the University to be a marine biologist. That is her true passion along with her good friends Henry and Nancy, who also work there and attend school with her.
After breaking up with her boyfriend Aaron she see's him again but refuses to let him back into her life. She secretly has dreams about someone in her class, but he has a girlfriend...her friend Nancy says why don't you go out with Henry? They are best friends and she doesn't want to ruin what they have. The next day she is called into the professors office and is asked to tutor someone since she received the highest score in the class, and he is failing the class....The student is Coen Marshall the guy she has a secret crush on. So now she's tutoring him, and Henry is not liking it to much. Why? Sydney has no clue.
Things get very interesting between Sydney and Coen...She is very secretive. When she goes for her training class her new instructor is none other then Coen...He is bound and determined on finding out what Sydney is hiding. See she had a very bad childhood and she is taking these lessons to protect herself..She will no longer be a victim. There is some violence in this book. What she went through, but she became a survivor and took control of her life and made it better, made something of herself. In this book you will see that.
It was hard for her, but I liked that she was strong. At times I thought she was needy but I was so wrong. She had support from someone who cared deeply for her...He was there always and never left her..Most of all it wasn't just one person...

I received a free ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review and right now I'm doing a happy dance because I LOVED it!
Sydney had a horrific childhood filled with emotional and physical abuse from her stepfather as well as sexual abuse from her stepbrother. Her mother has mentally checked out and does nothing to support Sydney. Luckily Sydney was able to go to college on Oahu far away from her family and is studying to become a marine biologist. She has supportive friends and a bright future, which she tries to focus on.
Coen is also a marine biology student with an undeserved bad reputation. He needs a tutor and Sydney is hired for the job. He is also a personal trainer who teaches self-defense and Sydney is one of his clients.
You can probably guess where this is going - boy meets girl, boy falls in love, yada yada yada. Luckily for us all there is SO MUCH MORE going on in this book! You've got a psychotic ex-girlfriend out for revenge, another man vying for Sydney's affections and a much-dreaded visit from the family from hell. This book was non-stop action and suspense to the point where I had to put it down a few times and walk away just to give my nerves a rest.
Some of the things I loved most about this book:
Coen is the ultimate book boyfriend, so swoon-worthy he made me melt. Where can I get a Coen for myself?
The setting was wonderful. The author didn't just write that the characters were on Oahu, there were references to Hawaii throughout the book. I could feel myself there when she described the sun, the scent of the flowers and ocean, the breeze, even the colors. Loved it!!
The epilogue was so sweet it brought tears to my eyes! The reference to seahorses in the last paragraph was so beautifully poignant I reread it several times. I absolutely loved it and won't forget it anytime soon.

BREAKING THROUGH THE WAVES (HAWAIIAN CRUSH 2) by E.L. TODD
I have read 3 books by EL Todd and I must say, this book is by far her best. I am grateful for the ARC copy that was given coz I had the chance to read this lovely story.
I love it from start to finish. I can’t seem to put the book down. It is a kind of story that will make you giddy, excited, heart-warming & passionate. It started light and you kinda have an idea what will happen next but it doesn’t make it any less of a story because EL Todd managed to blend everything well and tell the story in a way that’s engaging and thrilling. It’s like you’re watching a romantic film while reading this book. It’s lovely, romantic and has that real-feel to it. The main characters are definitely lovable. They are different yet similar in some ways. I like how they got to know each other and somehow end up dating and then opening scars to each other that made the story even better. EL Todd wrote their ups & downs beautifully. She did an amazing job in telling both POV in a genuine and real manner. You get to understand each of the characters’ opinions and feelings about the issues they encountered. The nitty-gritty part is as real and passionate as the love scenes in this book.
Applause for EL Todd for writing such beautiful story. I am looking forward for more and I hope I get to read more from the characters in this book. I think there is still so much to tell and I don’t want it to end, at least not yet. Connected By Sea captured my heart from start to finish and I felt the passion and sincerity of the story. A wonderful romantic read that’s engaging, passionate & simply amazing.
Well-written & definitely a must-read.

I have read 3 books by EL Todd and I must say, this book is by far her best. I am grateful for the ARC copy that was given coz I had the chance to read this lovely story.
I love it from start to finish. I can’t seem to put the book down. It is a kind of story that will make you giddy, excited, heart-warming & passionate. It started light and you kinda have an idea what will happen next but it doesn’t make it any less of a story because EL Todd managed to blend everything well and tell the story in a way that’s engaging and thrilling. It’s like you’re watching a romantic film while reading this book. It’s lovely, romantic and has that real-feel to it. The main characters are definitely lovable. They are different yet similar in some ways. I like how they got to know each other and somehow end up dating and then opening scars to each other that made the story even better. EL Todd wrote their ups & downs beautifully. She did an amazing job in telling both POV in a genuine and real manner. You get to understand each of the characters’ opinions and feelings about the issues they encountered. The nitty-gritty part is as real and passionate as the love scenes in this book.

First off I was given this Book as an ARC for a honest review, I think Author E.L. Todd did a great job with the story, she kept me interested in the story. This story is about Sydney she is attending the University of Hawaii which is far away from her home State of Ca. and that is just how she likes it. She has a New Life and New Friends in Henry and Nancy and thats all she needs. Sydney has a Love for everything in the Water its her dream to get her PHD. After a bad break up with her boyfriend due to his cheating, she is not ready or looking for a new love interest, but what Sydney doesnt know is Henry is secertly in Love with her. Since she is a straight A student she is asked to tudor a student so when she walks into the room to meet the student she is shocked that its Coen ( he is known for sleeping around and Cheating) but he is also the one guy she has been having dreams of Hot sex with, so she puts him off limits to her or so she thinks. They get to know each other while studying and feeling are there from both of them. Sydney is not ready for everyone to know they are seeing each other so she ask to keep it a secret and Coen is not happy but agrees for a short time. The story will show you the Love of the Ocean, how rumors are just that rumors also how Ex's dont want to stay Ex's and the Sercret old Life that Sydney has kept to herself wanting to forget about it and she is ashamed about too. Coen will be a rock for Sydney to help over come her pass and see that its was never her fault and she should Never be ashamed of what she had No control over. I will say they do get their HEA ending which I am so Happy. I would say give this Author a chance and sit back and enjoy this book by E.L. Todd.
