Consider how many times you have immediately picked up a cigarette when becoming stressed; this is because the subconscious mind has linked the emotion of stress with the activity of smoking. The subconscious mind instantly looks for the action usually performed with the emotion, and in a micro second it has accessed thousands of other times when you reached for a cigarette in an attempt to resolve these stressful feelings, so it then instructs you to light up. This is what is happening with all your emotions, from joy to happiness, sadness, anxiety, anger and any other emotion, because at some point you have most likely smoked a cigarette when experiencing these emotions. The subconscious mind is unable to distinguish what is real or what is imagined, so it has to instruct you to reach for a cigarette as this is what you usually do. This also happens with activities, have you ever picked up the telephone and immediately reached for smoke, or maybe you get handed a cup of coffee or tea and instantly without thinking your reach for a cigarette. This is because your emotions are linked with every action or every activity you undertake; there is not one moment of any day when you are not experiencing an emotional response. If you don’t believe you are feeling anything right now then maybe you are just content, so with the emotion of contentment what do you do, you light up a smoke.
