About the author

Alas, the rumor is true, Susan was a dental hygienist in her previous career. However, she "retired" from that profession many years ago and has been a full-time author ever since--thanks to all of you fabulous readers.

Susan grew up in a small Indiana town, married a guy from that town, and then moved to Chicago for a while. She is pleased to say that she has been back in her hometown for many years and plans to stay.

She's received a RITA, two National Reader's Choice Awards and a SIBA Award for Fiction. Her books include an Indie Next Pick, Okra Picks, a Target Book Club pick, and are popular with book clubs.

This was such a good read until the ending. IMO it ended in a HFN and really abruptly. We didn't learn what consequences the step-son got. Lucy wasn't confronted about her continued drinking, nor did we get any resolution about Abby and her bratty, spoiled sister. This needed an epilogue badly. The suspense was pretty good and if you like a sex off the page romance than this one would fit that bill.

This is my first book by Susan Crandall and I will probably give her another chance one day. This is not a bad book but it could definitely be better.

Let's start with the things I liked. The main idea of the story is quite interesting. Abby, the heroine, suffers from sleepwalking since she was a child. It traumatised her whole life. It's a nice and pretty fresh idea. It also makes the whole car accident case more intriguing (though I hate the fact that Abby is actually sleep-driving, that's a bit over the top). The whole suspense idea is rather good, unfortunately, the execution is not that great.

And here we come to the things I don't like about this story. Let's start with Abby - one of those annoying heroines. She always knows better and she always have to carry her point. She is stubborn to the point of being stupid. Most of the time she is just irritating and it's hard to feel sorry for her. And Jason, the hero, is unfortunately paper-thin. He is one of those heroes too good to be real but at the same time he is not a full shaped character.

Than we've got the idea of instant-love. At least on Jason part. For some totally unclear reason he fells in love with Abby at the first sight. She follows his steps quite fast and for some as mysterious reasons (of course despite him being a knight in a shining armour and Prince Charming). The suspense part, although pretty twisted and eventful, is lacking some atmosphere of thrill.

But what this story is asking for is the epilogue. I was so surprised when I didn't find one! This is a stand alone and there are still so many unfinished things and questions. Like, what about Bryce or did Abby and her sister worked out their problems? And we are left without answers.

Like I said, this is probably not my last book from Susan Crandall but this one I'm giving weak 3 stars.

Abby Whitman's nightmare has returned. Her sleepwalking has receded after puberty, but she's at it again. And this time apparently killing innocent people, while before, when she was a child, she only set the house on fire and severely burned her sister...And she's not just sleepwalking anymore, now she's got her sleepdriving license as well.

Since she doesn't remember the accident/murder/whatever, she enlists the help of local psychiatrist, Jason Coble, a man with enough baggage as it is, but still he says yes. Also, because he's hoping something more than a doctor-patient relationship might develop between him and the lovely recluse Abby turned herself into after the fire twenty years ago.

Hypnosis doesn't help in jogging Abby's memory, but it does corroborate the theory of sleep driving. But someone out there doesn't believe it. Someone out there thinks she knows more than she really does and is after her, wanting to silence her forever...And thanks to a trouble teenager desperately trying to put his family back together, that someone just might succeed.


This could've been a great book, but there were so many things working against it, it turned out into an unfortunate mass of suspense elements, mixed with some romance, a little tension, bland characters, and "arrhythmic" pacing (extremely slow at the beginning, only picking up pace toward the end, when it was already too late).

There were instances when I thought the story packed together too much of everything, while at other times there wasn't enough of anything it it. And the two leads didn't help matters at all. Their characters were completely wrong for this story, they just didn't belong there in my opinion, and I somehow couldn't bring myself to care what happened to them. And the many intertwining storylines added nothing to the transparency of this book, only making it just that bit more tough to follow things, especially with establishing characters that didn't lead to anything.

The final resolution about the accident/murder/whatever came out of the left field, had absolutely no head or tail, and certainly didn't warrant all the hype it got throughout the buildup, just adding to the overall schizophrenic feel of the book.
And the last surprise the author dealt with this story, the truth about the fire in the prologue, was completely redundant, since it was obvious what had happened from the get-go, only the heroine was too blind and too set in her self-blaming ways to see it.

Susan Crandall has written another solid romantic suspense. I am not one for ultra dark novels, and I can always count on Ms. Crandall to keep me engaged in the book and suspense, but not to take it too far. Abby has an unusual problem, a twist on amnesia, with sleepwalking. Jason is not your usual hero, in that he is a psychiatrist. There is plenty of family dynamics and, for once, a person of the cloth was not made out to be a stereotypical character. The big scene was well worth the wait, very exciting and it kept me on the edge of the seat. Loved how Abby and Jason worked things out. Another wonderful romantic suspense from Susan Crandall.

I won this book from Goodreads Giveaways, it was the first book I've ever won so I was excited to win it and read it.

Winning this book gave me the opportunity to read something that I would never have picked off the shelf. I do not tend to read romances and the cheesy romance cover would be enough to stop me from buying it.

There was nothing specifically wrong with the novel it just was not my type of book and I found myself rolling my eyes most of the time.

Abby Witman has spent much of her childhood afraid to fall asleep at night for fear of what she might do while sleep walking. Then, her sleep walking suddenly and inexplicably stopped. But now it is back, and she believes the consequences to be murder. But are they?

Susan Crandall has written a tale that kept me in suspense and cheering for Abby and Jason, her romantic interest, from beginning to end. I so wanted things to work out for both of them, and for both to overcome their problems and build a life together.

This is the first book I have read by Susan Crandall, and I am looking forward to reading her other books. A good read with action, suspense, romance, and an intriguing plot.

Pretty dreadful modern gothic romance packed with the obligatory red herrings and the strong, independent woman who becomes a vulnerable damsel in distress at the sight of a well-muscled male. Some of the plot (the arson) was incredibly transparent, the rest was so removed from the story that it didn’t make a great deal of sense even when explained. Crandall may also be the queen of the misplaced modifier; she averages one every three pages in a 390 page book. You do the math.

Abby lives a very quiet, lonely life. She has friends and a great job, but when night comes, terror engulfs her. When she was young, she had problems with sleepwalking, so extreme, that one night she knocked over a gas light as she was sleepwalking and burned her house down, injuring and scarring her sister. After many years with a psychologist, her sleepwalking has subsided, but her guilt has never left her.

Recently, her mom passed away and her father has been showing signs of Alzheimer's, and the shock and trauma of that has triggered her sleepwalking again. One night, after a chance meeting with Dr. Jason Coble, a local psychiatrist in town, she enjoys an impromptu dinner with him and then leaves to go home. The next time she wakes up, the unspeakable has happened. She is covered in glass, her car is in a marsh, and there is a nineteen year old dead off of a motorcycle. She is overridden with guilt and anguish that she “slept drove” and killed a young man.

However, not all is as it seems. Someone called 9-1-1 from the marsh, and it wasn’t Abby nor the dead teenager. Someone had been at the scene, but no one knows why. Jason starts to take the lead in Abby’s life, to give her reassurance and build up her confidence. He sees a very broken, woman living in complete denial. Jason himself leads a busy wife with an alcoholic ex-wife, a seven year old daughter with her, and a 17 yr old stepson that is definitely entering his rebellious years. As Jason spends more time with Abby, Bryce becomes more irate that his family will never be as one again. Threats start to escalate towards Abby, and her attraction to Jason also starts to move forward.

Sleep No More is a romantic suspense that really turned out of have a great mystery. There are many people involved and nothing is really how it seems until the very end. The threats towards Abby start small and escalate until things get out of control at the end, yet everything is all tied together.

My biggest problem with the book is Abby. She is just not my kind heroine. She has led a very emotionally difficult life. She burned down the family historical estate as a young girl, and her sister will live with the scars for the rest of her life. Besides getting guilt from her, Abby’s mother recently passed away and her father is showing the first signs of dementia, yet, Abby is the perfect person. By that I mean, yes she lives in denial and she is broken on the inside, but she has the perfect demeanor and at least the perfect exterior. She doesn’t have a bad bone in her body, always saying and doing the exact right things. Very reminscent of Marie-Terese in JR Ward’s Covet in that she is so meek, and boring. I can see Jason attracted to her emotions because of his profession, but I had a hard time buying into him being attracted to her as a whole.

I very much enjoyed Jason and his struggles with his ex-wife and their children. Susan Crandall does a great job with Jason balancing that part of his life with his new feelings for Abby. He really has to go through a lot of stress dealing with his alcoholic ex-wife and worrying about Abby and what harm may come to her. Bryce, Jason’s seventeen year old stepson also plays an important role in this book. His anger and aggression seem quite real and I think his actions portray that of a confused teenager.

The actual romance scenes in Sleep No More are light, but the suspense carries the story quite well.

Susan Crandall has a deft way of understanding the very thing that makes us human. Whether it be our flaws, our loves, or just the way we view the world, you won’t be closing one of her books thinking how unrealistic it was. Pulling out every insecurity, she takes you on a journey of heartbreak, love, and friendship, and leaves you with a greater appreciation for life. The hero and heroine were relatable, and the romance between them believable. The secondary characters added nicely to the story, and readers are able to get inside their heads from time to time. This book not only showed the fears surrounding sleepwalking, but Alzheimer’s and phobias as well. The plot flowed smoothly, without any dead spots. In fact, Susan is so good at pacing a story that you won’t know when to take a break and put it down. The setting was great, placing this book in a small Southern town, and was illustrated beautifully.

This was my first Crandall novel and I wasn’t disappointed.

Abby Whitman was a sleepwalker as a child and during one of her episodes she accidentally set the family home on fire leaving her younger sister Courtney scarred for life. Scars to her face, neck, and arms which were glaringly apparent for everyone to see. The guilt Abby has carried her entire life is extremely overwhelming which causes her to feel she doesn’t ‘deserve’ to have a good and happy life, and builds a wall around herself to protect her emotions and guilt, like jailing herself as a punishment for what she did.

Years pass without any sleepwalking episodes until one evening Abby finds herself crawling out of her vehicle, off the side of the road and down into a swamp. As she climbs out of her partially water-filled vehicle she realizes there is another vehicle involved. A motorcycle and that person is DEAD! Did Abby pass out at the wheel? Was she drunk? Was this a recurrence of her sleepwalking after all these years? Soon enough Abby discovers the other driver is the son of a well-known family in town, and only nineteen-years-old!!

The town’s handsome psychiatrist, Doctor James Coble, feels sorry for Abby and offers to help her figure out what has happened. Coble’s professionalism begins to slide when he finds himself falling passionately for Abby and wants to provide her with the love she feels she’s never really had.

Susan Crandall has crafted a great cast of characters, each intricately developed with their own set of problems. A wonderful romantic suspense with a terrifying, edge of your seat read that makes you want to turn the pages faster than you can read. The mystery, the suspense and the romance knit together to make for a nerve-racking build-up throughout the book. I’ll definitely be reading more of this author’s work.

What if you were scared to fall asleep, afraid you might hurt someone? Sleepwalking can have serious consequences.

Abby Whitman used to sleepwalk when she was younger. One night, she started a fire in her sleep that burnt down the house and scarred her younger sister for life. Now, Abby lives alone, running her flower shop and she is scared the sleepwalking has returned. She blacks out and doesn’t remember any events prior to falling asleep.

One time, she woke up in the middle of the night in her van, which was half submerged in the swamp. Hurt, she ran for help, and she was devastated to see that she had hit and killed a young man on a motorcycle. She doesn’t even remember going to sleep, let alone getting in her van in the middle of the night. The guilt brings her to her knees.

Dr. Jason Coble is a psychiatrist. Recently divorced, he isn’t looking for a new relationship. His work and his children keep him busy. But when he runs into Abby one evening and asks her to join him for dinner, he wants to pursue a relationship. Abby doesn’t let anyone get close to her because of her sleepwalking, but Jason insists on helping her.

The investigation of Abby’s accident reveals a third vehicle was at the scene. Abby begins getting threats about ‘not telling.’ She has no idea who it is or what they want, but the threats are real. Her house is broken into, and then set afire. Jason wants to keep her safe and to find out who is determined to silence Abby forever.

SLEEP NO MORE is a thrilling romantic mystery. The characters are realistic in their emotions and actions, and the plot twists and turns leaving you guessing until the very end. Susan Crandall is a master storyteller, and I look forward to reading more of her work.

This was another ARC win from www.goodreads.com and i liked it. I wasn't crazy about it but it was nice fluff. I didn't really connect with the characters and Abby just drove me nuts. I loved Jason. e reminded me of my husband who never gives up and always worries about everyone that he loves before he even worries about himself but I kept thinking Abby was just plain selfish. She kept pushing him away and I don't believe it for a second. As for the rest of the story I kept thinking I knew what was going to happen next but it kept taking all these different turns and I did like that about the story. I always thought I knew who it was or who was involved but I was wrong. I got a few things right (I don't want to leave spoilers so I will not say) but most of it was unexpected.

I gave Sleep No More 3.5/5 stars. I liked it for a quick read in between all the other books I read. It was a nice escape. It is definitely not a masterpiece, and I don't think it's supposed to be, but it is what it is and that is a nice beach read.

I read an advance reading copy of this book.

First of all, I really didn't have any major expectations for this book. I didn't choose it because it seemed fascinating. I chose it because it was there.

While I didn't have any troubles actually reading it, I had a hard time feeling pulled into it until I'd already read over one hundred pages. It had the potential to be interesting before that, but it just wasn't.

However, once I trudged through those first hundred pages, it became significantly more interesting. I felt myself wanting to stop to read it and not having to stop and force/i> myself to read it.

The relationship between the female lead and the male lead also didn't feel super forced despite the fact that they'd really just met one another before falling in love so soon. It seemed pretty natural most of the time.

The events themselves were okay. I did find myself drawn into the details that were little "what ifs" floating around in the book, but for the most part, it was sort of predictable.

Overall, this book is just 'okay.'

When I fist started this book i was having trouble focusing on the first chapter...could've been the setup, could have been me (I was also reading another book i couldn't focus on - but to be fair it is translated from another language).

Anyway, once I got passed the first chapter I LOVED THIS Book...took me months to get into it, took me two days to finish (once I tried again) and I had a hard time putting it down.

I am actually pretty relieved too. I happened on this author based on a random results of a search at my local library. The Pitch Black Title caught my eye, tried...fell in love with it. The saw two more that I thought would be interesting. During the first chapter, I was starting to worry how much I'd like the third book (Seeing Red)....Now I am confident I'll love it as well.

This story was your typical hard headed, stubborn women (in the guise of being described as independent and strong) who lacks common sense and has to have logic dealt to her by the leading man. "Yes, it seems someone is out to get me, but I'll be safe here in the back of my storeroom, which happens to be outside of town and completely remote, and sleep by myself. I'll be okay and no I will not go to your place or sleep at my dad's house because I am attracted to you even though that may be the safer option..." - my paraphrasing. Anyway, there is some potential for a stronger plot or more developed characters but it didn't quire make it.

On the whole it's not a bad read and will keep you entertained.

Susan Crandall's Sleep For Me is part thriller and part romance. Abby has spent most of her life regretting and trying to make up for the effects of one painful night. Abby comes across as a sympathetic character because she doesn't fixate on the past, doesn't complain, but takes real steps to fight her problem and to keep it from harming other people.

When it appears that her sleep walking has returned and Abby finds herself questioning her sanity, Dr. Jason Coble steps in just in time. The romance between Abby and Jason adds to the excitement, making Sleep For Me a fun and exciting romantic thriller.

The fear of hurting others while she sleepwalked has haunted Abby her entire life. She has kept others at a distance because she never wanted to inflict the pain she once caused her sister due to her nighttime habits when they were children. Now Abby is all grown up and she fears her sleepwalking habits have inflicted not just pain, but now death.

Susan Crandall has created a suspenseful read with just the right amount of romance to keep things a little on the spicy side. Greenwood Public Library is lucky enough to host Susan Crandall on November 18, 2010 at 6pm as part of our creative writing NaNoWriMo series. Mark your calendars to meet this very talented author, but don’t forget to check out Sleep No More. I also loved Crandall’s Pitch Black and can't wait to read more!

In Sleep No More, Susan Crandall gives me a shocking twisted romantic suspense that'll send you shivers down your spine. At a young age, Abby was blamed for the fire that scared her baby sister's life when she sleepwalked. Years later, her sleepwalking takes a twisted turn of another kind, when she gets involved in a car accident. From that moment one, she didn't remember everything and becomes an intended target from an unknown enemy. That's when Jason Coble enters her life as a friend, psychologist and future love. The closer they get to the truth, the more dangerous her life becomes caught in a sticky web, while things heat up for them. In the end, she learned the truth of both accidents and throws caution to the wind for a future romance. What a heated romantic suspense!

Susan Crandall has moved into the genre of romantic suspense and is a master at weaving scenes full of tension with danger lurking just beyond the shadows.

Her writing lets the reader experience the drama faced by the characters and become aware of the sights, sounds, and feelings surrounding them in a seamless style.

Then, when you least expect it, Crandall jolts the reader with an
abrupt new situation, requiring the reader to work through what's happening along with the character in the scene.

She thus allows the reader to experience the story, the hallmark of a great author.

As part of my goal to read as many of the authors at the DBF this year, I picked up Susan Crandall's "Sleep No More". A fast paced mystery that kept you turning the pages and surprised you with the ending that you thought you knew was coming.

It has a touch of romance, but not at the Nora Robert's level. The mystery is well written, with twist and turns and keeps flowing right through to the end.

This book is a great read for those who love a well written mystery, a keep you guess ending, and those who like Romance. Each type of reader will be satisfied with it.

I cant wait to pick up another book of hers.

Abbey has some dark secrets. While sleeping one night when she was young, she started a fire that hurt her little sister. Unfortunately, her problem has resurfaced. When a young man is killed in a car accident, Abby can't help but wonder if she is to blame. She begins seeing a psychiatrist to try and make sense of all of her repressed issues. The results are electrifying!

This is the first book of Susan's I have read and now I need to add her to my favorite authors list! If you like the synopsis, you will like the book.

Suspenseful is definitely a good word to describe this one! It had me on the edge of my seat for at least half of the book.

I felt so sorry for the main character Abby as everything unfolds, that I wanted to help her out myself.

Susan Crandall did a wonderful job spinning this intriguing, mysterious, and romantic story. (although I would say it was light on the romance) There were so many twists and turns, that it really kept you guessing.

This was a highly enjoyable book for fans of romantic suspense and I'd definitely recommend it!

This was a free book from goodreads...first good one in a while I must say. It was entertaining though at times I got annoyed with the characters feeling as though they "don't deserve" one another for some reason or another. The girl who sleep walked was most annoying by thinking she was so dangerous just because she may or may not have started a fire in her sleep. Seriously..that doesn't mean she can't have a family...but overall i did enjoy the book.

Charlotte has a special gift, as an oracle, that can let her not just see the future, but change it. This has led to tragedy in the past, but unable to communicate well with her aunt, who is also her mentor, (that part felt weak to me), she decides to take on the murders happening to her friends by herself. Rather violent. The whole concept of Smith and his role was too outside my willing suspension of disbelief. This was more of a 3- or 2+ for me.

I was lucky enough to win this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. Sleep No More is a romantic suspense full of action and twists; it has good primary and secondary characters. Abby's sleepwalking and actions from it have left her with feelings of guilt and fear. Psychiatrist Dr. Jason Coble helps her delve into her memories and fear to resolve these issues.

This is the first book by Susan Crandall that I've read.

My main issue with the book is a that the hit man acted out of character by not just killing her while he had her in the car at the beginning of the book and then spent the rest of the book in rather amateur attempts to take her life. If killing people hadn't been his "job", I would have been more forgiving of his efforts and mistakes.
