Brandt Brothers #2

Capitally Engaged

Rate this book
Can two self-reliant people manage to fake their way through an engagement without catching real feelings?

Jax Carter has been through her share of crappy situations. But an IBS flare-up catching her in a wrong-place, wrong time situation while the rest of her life crumbles around her is a new low. Next thing she knows, she’s the fake fiancée of Preston Brandt, a title she accepted to save his job. Suddenly, a place to stay and a new professional opportunity have fallen into Jax’s lap. It’ll just require her to let down her steel-enforced walls enough to pretend she’s in love with a near-stranger.

Preston Brandt’s boss may be the biggest jerk in the Senate, but serving as his speech writer is the last stepping-stone before Preston’s own run for Congress. At least, it should be, assuming he doesn’t develop a stress ulcer or get fired for bringing an unapproved journalist into his office first. Now, Preston finds himself with a fake fiancée who may just be the solution to his professional problems. He’ll simply need to ignore the feelings she stirs up he assumed were long dead.

Surviving their fake engagement in front of their colleagues will be hard enough. Convincing Preston’s nosy brothers they’re in love without falling themselves will take everything they’ve got.

In these pages you’ll find a fake engagement, only one bed (and only one room), DC references, gossipy brothers, a few open-door steamy scenes, lots of laughs, and even more heart. Happily ever after guaranteed!

Well this series continues to be adorable. I'm so excited that each book focuses on a different Brandt brother because I am fascinated by them all. Book 2 is Preston's book. Preston Brandt is a workaholic one could say - or just overly devoted to his job. As a senators aide, Preston is also focused on his own political career and wanting to run in the following election year. So obviously, there's no time for romance. But then Jax Carter comes stumbling into his life.

Jax Carter is not having the best days. She's been evicted, lost her job and her IBS is having the worst flare up, and of course there are no bathrooms around. When she rushes into a capitol building for a bathroom, she never expects to end up with a fake fiancé.

Yes, this book was a little ridiculous and over the top. And yes, you had to suspend your belief for a bit, because obviously this would never really happen. But it was so funny and adorable that I didn't even mind how unbelievable things were because sometimes you just need happiness. And these two just hit it off immediately. They both took to the fake fiancé act very well and even were able to cohabitate in Preston's studio apartment with little to no problems.

I liked the relationship between Preston and Jax. They both pushed each other out of their comfort zones and into situations where they needed to confront very personal issues, especially Jax who refuses to let herself get close to people for fear of being left behind. She believes everyone will leave her eventually so she chooses to push people away. Meanwhile, Preston is haunted by a past relationship and his brothers are worried that he's falling into the same trap. Both struggle with communication, as per usual, but have the chemistry to make it work.

Again, the family connections are off the charts and I love that we are still seeing that dynamic integrated throughout the books. This is just such a fun series. I can't wait to learn more about the other brothers.

Thank you to the author for sending me a review copy - all thoughts are my own.

What to Expect:
-Fake Engagement
-Roommance
-Brandt Brothers group texts
-Working together in DC Politics
-IBS Representation
-Open Door
-SO MUCH BANTER

Fake dating/engagement is one of my favorite tropes – yes, we know they are going to catch feelings, but it’s so fun to watch them pretend they can live together in a 400 square foot DC studio while also working together and not learn each other’s routines and quirks along the way. Add in their meet “cute” - Jax is desperate for a restroom and Preston ushers her to the senate office where he works, where he declares she’s his fiancee, and you really get an authentic foundation for their partnership. Both Jax and Preston are no strangers to loss (CW parental/grandparental loss, off page), so they know just how important it live for today and cherish what’s real. I loved so much how Preston and Jax show up for each other, in both cases being selfless to a fault, but their tender natures really compliment each other and make for a pair you love to love.

I’m a sucker for the Brandt Brothers series and Rachel never fails at keeping me up late binging her words. You know when a book is so good that it plays like a movie in your head and you find yourself talking about the characters as if you know them in real life?? That’s Capitally Engaged for you.

✨ Topical with an election year (in such a good way).
✨ Spicy 🌶️ AND romantic - love an emotional kink.
✨ Taught me where to find more bathrooms in DC which is always a struggle.
✨ Left me dying for more Brandt stories and also wanting to re-read #carrymethroughchristmas and #capitallymatched because I miss everyone already.

Thank you to the author for the gifted copy.

4.5 ⭐️ Rounded Up

I had the honor of being a Beta (and ARC) reader for this novel and am thankful to the author for trusting me with such an early version of her novel.

This is the second book in the Brandt Brothers series and it did not disappoint. I loved this book so much. An IBS induced bathroom emergency leads our two independent MCs to each other and the rest is history. Rachel gives us all those romcom elements we all love: witty banter, golden retriever MMC, fake dating, forced proximity, strangers to friends (with benefits 😏) to lovers, and the spice. But she also provides depth and incorporates heavier topics in a respectful way. The inclusion of IBS rep was cool and unavoidably funny.

I was selected to be a Beta reader due to my having parental loss in common with characters in this book and I have to say, Rachel did a fantastic job portraying the experiences and the emotional and relational impact of this type of loss. I found myself relating to the FMC, Jax, so so much. This is not to say that everyone who has experienced parental loss will resonate as much as I did, but there were moments where I easily could have been reading about myself. I also love the mental health and pro-therapy rep.

Although heavy topics are covered, this was still such a fun book. I loved revisiting characters from the past books. Watching the romance develop and hit that spicy 🔥 level was so good. I enjoyed the political component of this book and the behind the scenes look into that world. And I LOVED those powerful female patriarchy smashing moments.

This is my third book by this author and she just keeps getting better. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Rachel, thank you again for the privilege of Beta reading for you, for your care and sensitivity in tackling such an emotional topic, and for creating a character who I could see myself in 💛

A somewhat wholesome, corny, sweet and just a little spicy romcom.

Truly connected with the characters and I appreciated the communication of it all! Somehow completely missed that this was #2 in a series but didn’t feel lost in the context/content in the least. I will definitely be going back and reading the first in and the rest of the series as they continue the story of the Brandt brothers.

I very much enjoy Rachel’s writing style. The beginning felt a little too meet cute for me but it quickly turned the tide and I found myself falling in love with their story.

I got an ARC of Capitally Engaged and I was so excited! I really enjoyed this book, the characters were engaging (lol) and likable. Preston, the MMC gives major golden retriever energy, and I love it. I really liked seeing the dynamic of 2 very independent people learning to rely on others. I also loved the side characters of Preston’s brothers, Laurel, and Michelle. It looks like Michelle is going to have her own book too, and I’m looking forward to it!
Overall, a super cute rom com!

“For everyone out there with tummy troubles - you’re being very brave about it.” 🥴

Happy, happy #PubDay to CAPITALLY ENGAGED, the second book in the Brandt Brothers series, by @rachelwritesromance (and thank you for the #gifted eARC to read and review early)! Set in DC, CAPITALLY ENGAGED gives you:
🔹Fake engagement
🔹Forced proximity & only one bed
🔹Workplace romance
🔹Bisexuality & Disability Rep (IBS)
🔹He falls first
🔹He is not as sexually experienced, and she teaches him (!!!)
🔹DC/political setting

The meet cute and jump into the fake relationship happens real, real quick - so I was worried we’d get an Insta love situation - but stick it out and it is so, so worth it! The feelings develop slowly and naturally - but the hilarity of living with a stranger, the commentary of the nosy Brandt Brothers, and our heroine’s secret side gig (👀) helps push the story forward.

I think Charlotte and Hayden are still my favorite Brandt Brother pair - but Jax and Preston are such a close second. And…this book has plenty of little easter eggs about the next Brandt Brother who will be our hero and his leading lady! (Eeekk!)

You know when you read a book and instantly fall in love with the story and the characters? Well that's what I did with Capitally Engaged. The first two lines had me hysterically laughing and I could not stop reading once I started.

Jax is such a badass bitch and I loved her character. The humor in the book is top notch and I loved her one-liners. It was so refreshing to have a main character with tummy issues that had to think about food and bathrooms. If you've lived this life, you understand.

Preston was Jax's perfect match, because he balances her out. He's a bit of a mystery at first, but Preston slowly reveals his layers to not only Jax, but also the readers. I loved that he took the time to understand her IBS and he was just so sweet to her. Preston looks out for not only Jax, but also his brothers. And seeing a hero with a praise kink unlocked something for me...it was so well done!

I truly appreciated seeing both Preston and Jax having a shared experience in losing a parent. While they both dealt with the grief in different ways, it ultimately helped the pair grow emotionally. There was also such a positive light shone on therapy, which I always love to see.

There were so many things I loved about this book, including the Brandt Brothers group chats and the Senator, who epically surprised me in the best ways. Also, District Taco...enough said. And the epilogue? Utter perfection.

Capitally Engaged gives you...
💍 He falls first
💍 Forced proximity
💍 Only one bed
💍 Fake engagement
💍 Humor + steam

I am beyond proud of Rachel and all she has accomplished with this book. This is absolutely her best book to date and I cannot wait to see how the Brandt universe grows and thrives!

Capitally Engaged was a meh read for me. The plot was fine, the Brandt brothers are amazing, and Preston was absolutely perfect. Jax, on the other hand, goes onto my “nope” list: she’s erratic, secretive, kind of manipulative, a user, and basically kind of a jerk. There’s only so many times you can freeze someone out or behave terribly and call it your “walls” in place. No, you’re actually just a bit awful. Preston deserved so much better! He was such a golden retriever, though it did get to be a tiny bit much sometimes. Otherwise the story was okay. I appreciated the DC-area bits, as a resident of the DMV.

One note about the writing style: it was oddly verbose with very strange placement of propositional phrases, which really reduced the readability and flow of the book. There were many, many sentences that I was trying to piece together out of the order written to determine what the author was trying to say. Some examples:

- I arrived twenty minutes early, wanting to be already situated as my dinner date approached, locking in for my own sake that I was in charge here.

- Tucking my phone away, the strain of leaving reduced knowing something to look forward to waited for my return.

- She bent down and put the hat back on my head she had knocked off during our enthusiastic celebrations. (This reads like she knocked off his head, not his hat 😂)

I received an ARC of Capitally Engaged from BookSirens. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Rating: 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 1/5 🌶️

The Brandit brothers are back, and this time we’re following Preston! This is my third book by this author, and she just gets it right every single time!!

Jax Carter is smart, funny, and strong, but her life is a mess! She’s losing her job and her apartment, and before we get to all that, she’s at Capitol Hill and really needs to use the restroom. When a stranger, Preston—who is the sweetest but also has a life that revolves around work, his personal aspirations, and his love for his brother—offers to help her out, little does she know that not only will she get to use a restroom, but she’s also getting a new fake fiancé and moving into his 400 sq ft studio apartment.

I honestly loved every single thing about these two; I literally wouldn’t change a thing. Preston and Jax were absolutely perfect together. I love how he was a little shy, and Jax was the complete opposite, basically convincing him to actually pretend to be engaged, move in, and get her a job. The banter between them was so good, and OMG, all the text messages and group chats were hilarious. But my favorite part, hands down, was all the moments of them working together seamlessly in their tiny apartment.

I loved how they both shared very intimate things early on, and I think that helped build the trust between them. Both Jax and Preston had insecurities from things that happened in the past, and they worked together to overcome them. This book also had the perfect amount of spice and very low drama. But speaking of drama…

All the side characters in this book were amazing, but I can’t wait for RidgeMan93 and WeatherGirl85’s book… now that’s going to really have the group chat blowing up, lol.

Jax has had her fair share of bathroom emergencies thanks to her IBS, but her latest emergency accidentally landed her a fake fiance. Preston Brandt is the speech writer for one of the Senate’s biggest jerks, so when he brings Jax, an unapproved political journalist into the office to use the restroom, he panics and says she is her fiance. Before they know it, Jax and Preston are living together and working together, forcing them to really lean into this fake relationship. Then when Preston’s nosy brothers get involved it becomes even more complicated.

From the IBS bathroom emergency meet-cute at the beginning, I knew this book was going to be a good one. Rachel manages to make IBS representation both funny and sweet at times, while also being real about the experience. This book has everything I want in a romcom - the cutest golden retriever of a male lead, witty banter, laugh out loud moments, District Taco (iykyk), and a good amount of steam. Fake dating and only one bed are tropes that are always a hit for me, but the only 1 bed in a 400 square foot DC studio apartment was next level. I adore that this series is set in DC and truly made me crave multiple restaurants while reading. (Anyone in for a Sequoia brunch soon?) At a time when politics are so prevalent in our culture, I also enjoyed that both characters were working in politics. This book also tackles grief after losing a parent, and I thought that was handled so beautifully in both characters. This book brought me so much joy, I read it in one sitting. I already am counting down until we get the next Brandt Brothers story!

A huge thank you to the author for the advanced copy.

It was so fun to head back to D.C. for the next installment of Rachel Holm's Brandt Brothers series. I think this could be my favorite book by Rachel!

Read this for:
- Fake engagement
- Forced proximity
- IBS rep
- Bi rep
- Only one bed
- Roommates
- Workplace

Jax Carter is in need of a place to stay and a job and with a chance encounter being helped by Preston Brandt she secures both with an addition of a fiancé in Preston. The two move into together in Preston's tiny DC apartment and that forced proximity really does it's job with that only one bed!

Jax doesn't open up to people easily but she finds herself quickly wanting to befriend Preston and then wanting to be much more than friends. Preston is immediately fighting his attraction and intrigue for Jax, but as they slowly open up to one another he realizes how much he can't fight off his desire for her.

I loved seeing how Jax and Preston each worked through their issues to be able to be together. They helped one another improve and brought out the best in one another. The heat between them could not be denied, but the chemistry was only part of their relationship because they built a strong friendship between one another.

It was fun to see the rest of the Brandt clan and characters we have grown to love from Rachel's other books. This one will make you laugh, blush, and leave you smiling at the end. Make sure and get it on your TBRs!

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC. All opinions are my own.

Finally! We get another Brandt brother story. This did not disappoint. Preston and Jax weren’t complete strangers (they knew of each other) but Preston introducing Jax to his senator boss as his fiancé was definitely a shock for everyone.

Jax moved into Preston’s studio apartment the next day (she was about to homeless so how convenient)! She also quickly started working for the senator (but still writing romance books under a pen name).

They decide to be friends with benefits (fake engaged with benefits?)… with some lessons. Because it always goes so well and doesn’t muddy the waters at all. Ha! I LOVED these two. They just worked. Falling into a perfect routine.

The 3rd act conflict was short lived and I’m glad to see Jax realized she’s a silly goose for always running away when things get hard.

4.5 ⭐️
2🌶️

I loved the IBS representation in this book. It’s not something you read about often but it I loved that it normalized it. And Preston took notice and tried to help with knowing what foods she could eat and how close all bathrooms were.

I can’t wait for Capitally Unexpected! Rachel - I’m sorry for what I said when I tried to force you to tell me who Ridgeman was. I should have just kept reading.

Thank you to Rachel Holm for an earc to review.

Capitally Engaged is a capitally engaging (sorry I had to) read that revolves around the self-reliant duo of Jax and Preston. A chance - bathroom emergency - encounter throws these two loners into a fake engagement that is meant to benefit them both in a financial/career way. But of course as any good forced proximity/roommates/fake fiance romance would have keeping it strictly business isn't as easy as either of them hopes it will be.
With the 2nd book in the Brandt Brothers series, Holm has created an approachable and (oddly politics light) look into real-world political Washington, DC. Local DC haunts and landmarks are mentioned and add to the rich cultural environment of the book. As someone who has lived and worked in the district and still lives in the greater area, I enjoyed visiting the national capital through Jax and Preston's eyes. Especially the opening chapter in which Jax is in desperate search of an available restroom for her to use when so many buildings require security clearance to be entered. Holm, also does a great job including all the ins and outs of living with an invisible disability like IBS and not just using it as a plot device. (Kudos!).

Rep: bi-sexual, IBS, pro-therapy

What to expect: forced proximity, fake fiance, roommates to lovers, workplace romance, only one bed, let's just get it out of our systems, a smattering of *ex-teaching.

TW/CW: death of parents (in past), public outing of a hidden identity, biphobia (discussed),

4/5 stars
3/5 steam

Thanks to @rachelwritesromance for the #gifted copy of this book.

Summary: Jax Carter, after a very poorly timed bathroom emergency, left the building feeling much better, but also with a stranger for a fiancee. Preston isn't exactly sure how he got himself in this position, however, Jax helping to save his job was a blessing in disguise. Until he suddenly has a fiancee, who also has become his new roommate and coworker. Being fake engaged should be fine, as long as they keep their feelings out of it.

Thoughts: I loved being back in the world with the Brandts. Their text banter and dynamics are just so fun to read about, and I love getting to know each of them throughout this series. I loved Jax and all of her independently fierce ways. However, she grew so much in this book to realize that it was nice to have someone by her side helping her along the way, not only in her personal life but also professionally. Preston certainly just jumps in with two feet to any situation, but it was fun getting to watch him come alive with the support of Jax. Both were so independent and not looking for love, but it fell in their laps and it was fun to be on their journey to an HEA.

I received an ARC of this book, but this is my honest review.

Oh. My. God. This book completely took me by surprise and hit me right in the feelings. I initially picked it up as a palate cleanser from the fantasy novels I’ve been devouring lately, but it quickly became clear that I need to read everything else this author has written.

From the very beginning, I fell head over heels for Preston, who is an absolute angel. His gentleness and kindness radiate through the pages, and I found myself wanting to reach into the book just to give him a hug. He’s easily my favorite character in this story.

Jax, on the other hand, was a bit harder to understand at first, but as the story unfolded, I began to see why she is the way she is. By the end, I absolutely loved her too. The development of their relationship, with all its twists and turns, was beautifully done. It felt natural, and I appreciated that the story didn’t rely on unnecessary drama to keep things interesting.

Overall, this book was a joy to read—easy, heartfelt, and satisfying. I’m giving it a solid 5/5 stars. While the spice level was mild (1.5/5), it didn’t take away from my enjoyment at all. I absolutely loved it!

I think this one might be my favorite by Rachel Holm! And she really makes me want to actually explore where I live since I’m pretty close to DC (which I’m sure we will more once the little one is bigger!).

Fake dating is one of my favorite tropes! The tension and when will they admit they want it to be real? Ugh love it. And it really worked here with this story! Other favorite tropes include: forced proximity, only one bed family group texts.

I don’t want to spoil this one for anyone, but I really loved so many themes throughout this book: the Bi representation, IBS representation, the view of romance as a genre.

Watching Preston and Jax open up to each other was such a journey. Being vulnerable isn’t easy, but they made that safe space for each other. They really met their match when Jax needed a bathroom 🤣

This one is out 8/29 and should be on your radar! It’s book 2 in the Brandt Brothers series, so there’s a little time to catch up before this one is out! Thank you to the author for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Thank you to the author for the advanced copy. It was awesome to read and review this book. This review is my own opinion.

Rachel Holm is an author to follow. Capitally Engaged is Rachel's 3rd book and it is as good as the first 2. In the 2nd in the Brandt brothers series, we see Preston Brandt helping Jax Carter out of a bathroom jam after an IBS emergency for Jax. Somehow, they end up fake engaged!

Preston is a lovable MMC who seems to want to help out wherever he can. Jax tells it like it is and I love her fiery spirit and sass. The two of them help each other grow and discover new things about themselves. We see Charlotte and Hayden from Capitally Matched again in this and learn more about the other brothers who are, no doubt, getting their own stories told soon. I loved the side characters of Senator Marsden, Laurel, and Michelle(who is featured in the next book).

DC itself plays a supporting character and plays it well. If you are from the area, like me, it is so neat to know exactly where they are. I am excited to see it as the backdrop for more stories to come!

The second book in the Brandt Brother’s series was just as good as the first. I know these books are following the brothers, and they are keepers for sure, but I love these women. They are confident, sassy and take what they want. Do they have insecurities, of course, but they pull themselves up and move forward.
This time it was Preston’s turn and the first meeting with Jax is interesting. Let’s just say she has IBS (which is accurately depicted I might add) and he rescues a damsel in DISTRESS. Been there myself many a time. Jax steamrolls into Preston’s life of work and solitude and they both come out better for it. I loved how easy everything is once again. No coming back to the same things over and over. We solve it and move on. Love how they finally get together too (🔥🔥). This book was an instant 5/5⭐️ for me and the spicy scenes fit in seamlessly which are also 5/5🌶️.

Highly recommend and it is quick read. Can’t wait to see what is next for this family (and there are some pretty big clues as to what it is!). I highly recommend checking it out.

Thank you so much to Rachel Holm for gifting me a review copy of her new book, Capitally Engaged.

This is the second in the Brandt Brothers series and if you love a unique meet cute, an only one bed scenario, and fake engagement as much as I do you’re 100% going to want to grab yourself a copy. Not to mention all the great D.C. references, amazing pet names, IBS rep, fantastic group texts, and so, so much more.

Jax Carter meets Preston Brandt in the middle of searching for a bathroom during an IBS flare-up. (As a fellow IBS sufferer, I feel so seen by this book). The two end up fake engaged—you’ll have to read the book to fully appreciate how that all comes about, but Jax convinces Preston to continue the ruse to help both of them out.

Can they both survive this fake engagement to practical strangers? What about the inconvenient and very not-fake feelings that are cropping up? And how am I going to be patient until the next Brandt Brothers book comes out?!

I was so excited to receive an ARC for Capitally Engaged! I’ve been a fan of Rachel’s since her first book and couldn’t wait to continue the Brandt brothers’ stories. Jax and Preston have the most awkward (but maybe also most realistic?) meet cute when she desperately needs a bathroom and a fake engagement is born. This is the first time I’ve ever read a book where the FMC has irritable bowel syndrome and as an IBS girlie myself, I loved that Jax just owned it as a part of who she was. Preston makes all the little things the big things in how caring and considerate he was, especially when it came to Jax’s physical and emotional comfort. I also just finished Scandal so this was SO perfect to be reading about DC and the political world. I can’t wait to read about the next Brandt brother’s happily ever after in Capitally Unexpected!

Take one IBS riddled girliepop looking for a bathroom at the Capitol building on a busy day, then close all the bathrooms, and have her run into a congressman’s chief of staff who takes her to his boss’s bathroom, and then have the boss storm into the office fuming about unauthorized guests.

Obviously the only way out of this is a fake engagement right????? Your boss can’t be mad if it’s your tummy troubled fiancée in the bathroom, right?????

Duh.

I loved it. This was wonderful. Rachel has this way of writing such heartwarming and relatable scenes while still making them squeal-inducingly cute. I kicked my feet, I giggled, I smiled super big, but I also fucking cried and honestly, Rachel, how dare you.

I love these brothers and this family I cannot wait for what comes from Rachel next.

So I love myself a good feel good romance book and Capitally Engaged definitely fit the bill. Now as someone who loves visiting DC, but not because of the politics, I felt that the political setting had just enough in the story to not feel like you needed to understand politics a lot.

The relationship between Jax and Preston was definitely rushed and not quite believable at first, because who would be that trusting after barely knowing someone for a few seconds/minutes. Though the did have some chemistry and I was rooting for them at the very end.

If you are looking for a shortish cutesy romance with IBS representation (it’s there and mentioned but by the end it just fades off), he falls first, one bed, meet cute then this is the book for you.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily and all thoughts are of my own.

Fake engaged?! Roommates?! With benefits?! Truly, say no more.

5⭐️ 2🌶️

- forced proximity
- Roommates
- Only one bed
- He falls first
- Workplace romance
- Fake engaged
- Disability rep (IBS)

Jax finds herself in a sticky situation when she’s downtown in DC and begins to have an IBS flare up, causing her to be in a desperate dash to find access to a restroom. She happens to run into Preston, and not only is he able to help her find her a restroom, but he also surprises them both when he introduces Jax to his boss (who happens to be a senator!!) as his fiancée.

Jax now has to decide if she’s able to keep up the fake fiancée façade as they choose to move in to Preston’s apartment together, meet each others families, and even begin working together for the same senator, or if it’ll all become too much.

Thanks to the author for an eARC. Jax needs a bathroom now and Preston comes to her rescue. Their funny meet cute is just the beginning of this cute romance. Jax and Preston agree to be fake engaged for three months to help each other out and live together during this time. They’ve both experienced losses in their lives and are hesitant to let others in but what starts out as fake makes it easier to start to let someone in. Enjoyed the characters and enjoyed seeing their growth. Enjoyed the side characters and can’t wait to read more about some of them in other books. A cute rom com I would read again.

I would say that this was a 3.5 that got rounded up to ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ .

There were some very unsexy components to this that made the characters relatable as they navigated their relationship. The FMC was a flight risk which we are referring to as the death of her parents at a young age. There is an orphan mentality that may trigger her for Preston’s big family.

The MMC was adorably awkward. There could have been more development on regaining his confidence after his ex.

The smut level was moderate but enough to not read as an audible with kids in the car.

IBS in a romantic light.
I never would've thought that anyone could make IBS the initiator of a witty romance. The protagonists, Jax and Preston are very well-described characters of this politically centred novel. It is easier to find the funny side of a hard-to-deal-with medical condition when one doesn't suffer from it. Nevertheless, it was nice to see how Preston treated her with understanding and without looking at her as if she were sick. There was a pleasant HEA, and I am happy to recommend this book.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Jax Carter, political reporter by day and romance author by night, seemingly stumbles across Preston Brandt by accident while having a bad IBS moment. When Senator Marsden catches them in the office, Preston quickly introduces Jax as his fiancee.

Jax, unsure of how this will play out willingly plays along with what Preston says. When they seemingly move in together and slowly get to know each other, they each slowly realize this is something they want.

But what happens when someone outs Jax’s author Pen Name? find out when you read Capitally Engaged!

What a fun rom com! So many tropes I love packed into one book! 😍😍😍 Preston and Jax are such lovable characters and I was cheering them on the whole time. I loved getting to read from both of their perspectives. So many funny moments and sweet moments too! If you’re looking for a fast paced romance that is sweet and spicy, you’ll love it as much as I did!

Thank you so much Rachel for the gifted copy!

Thank you to the author for the advanced reader copy. These opinions are my own.

This is the second book in the Brandt Brothers series. It can be read stand alone, but I always love my series in orders. This focuses on Preston, the brother who work on Capitol Hill as the chief of staff for a senator. At the start of the story, Jax is a political reporter. When Preston helps her through a tough situation, it leads to a fake engagement between the pair.

I really enjoyed the political backdrop. It felt pitched just right to speak to my interests without being too much during this election season. And the book also reminded me of my love for DC and made me want to visit again.

There's great representation of IBS and a bit on low FODMAP diets. But the biggest serious topics deal with grief.

I especially loved the text conversations sprinkled throughout the book. They even reminded me of parts of Carry Me Through Christmas. And I love that Jax loves romance novels and writes. I am always so happy to see a defense of the genre. A love of indie bookstores and books is a consistent part of this series, and it warms my heart.

But most of all, I really enjoyed the romance between Jax and Preston and how they showed up for each other. This is one that helps me believe in dreams, too.
