Minding the Bedside: Nursing from the Heart of the Awakened Mind

Rate this book
Forward to the book, Minding the Bedside: Nursing from the Heart of the Awakened Mind.

Minding the Bedside is a rare and timely work of art. Jerome Stone leads us
on an illuminating and heart-opening exploration into the true nature of mind,
presence, compassion and the healing relationship. Calling on his decades
of experience in the nursing profession and his equally rich depth of study
of mindfulness and non-dual spirituality, he weaves a magnificent fusion of
teachings, stories and insights that will inspire any health care practitioner
(not just nurses) to rediscover their art as a blessed opportunity to accelerate
their own personal awakening.

This book confronts head-on the big questions that all in the helping professions face: What does it mean to “show up”, to be present for another? How can I possibly be helpful in the face of unfathomable suffering or impossible circumstances? How can I hold my inner reactivity
and what this patient triggers in me? What really is compassion? What is
compassionate intention? And perhaps the biggest question of all, What really
is this “I” that is doing this work in the first place? To address these questions
and others Stone offers his own discoveries as well as gems from many of the
world’s wisdom traditions, great spiritual teachers, and even scientific research
into the nature of mind, meditation and consciousness.

An especially timely contribution is his treatment of the subject of “healing
environments” which is gaining traction as a concept for hospitals and other
treatment settings to aspire to. For this he argues persuasively that the qualities
of mindfulness (focus), meditative awareness (attention) and compassion
(caring) in health care personnel are essential to the successful evolution of
such programs. Finally, as a practical learning device, the book makes excellent
use of summaries of key concepts at the end of each chapter, and provides
guided exercises throughout that enable the reader to directly experience the
teachings and cultivate the capacity to be a more present, clear and peaceful
care provider. Minding the Bedside is an outstanding contribution that should
be required reading for health care practitioners from all disciplines.

This book is interesting. It contains good ideas and it has a defined set of trainings for you to practice. I just couldn't finish it because I felt like after 90 pages, I got the concept. And it is so peaceful that it puts me to sleep when I read it.
