Hazel and Elijah Find Out: First They F*cked Around

Rate this book
Elijah March feels mixed feelings about returning to the small-town of Grand Ridge. He left over a decade ago as his dad—and the town—painted him to be a degenerate teenager.

He’s willing to risk it to see Hazel again.

Months after their one night and he needs to know if she craves him like he craves her.
Being chased by her boyfriend’s dog, is a rude awakening that maybe the spark didn’t go both ways.

Hazel Matthews is overworked, overwhelmed, and over it. She just wants to run her business without worrying about the hometown gossips.

Directly after the man she’s not dating “breaks up” with her, Elijah shows up as if conjured from her most coveted memories, and desires.

But memories are long and controversy runs deep in Grand Ridge. A relationship with the legendary bad boy, and a scandalous bachelor auction could destroy the shaky foundation of her vet clinic.

This was a lot shorter than I expected, fast-paced and I'll be honest, I found this a bit underwhelming.
I did enjoy the romance. But after reading so many books like this, I've become somewhat desensitized to the allure of these types of stories. While I know many people will love this; I thought it was average.

────── ✧ ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ♡ ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ✧ ──────

Hazel and Elijah have a very memorable one-night stand before the events of the book but quickly lose touch. A year later, when Elijah returns to town, they find themselves reconnecting where they left off.

“Would you be interested in auctioning your body?”

Is one hell of a way to grab a man's attention after not messaging him for a year! Honestly this was a great start to the story, and I did love the characters and their romance.

A tender heat grew in my chest, wrapping around my heart and easing into my stomach, pleasant and soft. Unlike the all-consuming smolder he’d made me feel in the past, this was something new. Gentle. Sustainable.
“The woman I like asked me to be here, so I’m here,” he stated.
“You’re here because of me?”
“I am in this town because of you.”

Hazel's veterinary clinic has some financial issues so when her friend Nora suggests a bachelor auction as a means to raise funds, she agrees despite Hazel's initial skepticism. Surprisingly, the men of the town eagerly step up to lend their support.

────── ✧ ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ♡ ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ✧ ──────

Hazel, a new business owner, she's hardworking; devoting all her time and energy to her veterinary clinic. Her fiercely independent nature often borders on stubbornness. Despite her reluctance to burden others, she struggles to maintain balance without succumbing to exhaustion.

Meanwhile, Elijah grapples with his tarnished reputation in his hometown, haunted by the shadows of his past indiscretions. As he revisits old stomping grounds, the judgmental eyes of the community weigh heavily upon him. His clear intentions clash with the expectations thrust upon them, adding strain to their budding romance, which seems to put a lot of pressure on him, to the point where he felt like he needed to end things despite him seeking something deeper than a mere repeat of their past encounter.

I felt like the ending was a little too fast, they got together, and they were in a decent place besides some insecurities and then he abruptly ended things when there wasn't a real need to. I don't know, I just found it frustrating how he chose to break up with her and how he had the audacity to be upset when he's the one who ended things when a simple conversation about his anxieties could have likely resolved the issue.

After two weeks of sulking, Elijah finally gathers the courage to return and confront her. His decision is spurred by the social media post he sees, where Hazel expresses gratitude to everyone involved in the auction, including him, for establishing a fund for the clinic. This post serves as a wake-up call, making him realize his mistake.

Overall, a great story if you enjoy a fluffy romance, there were a lot of cute, 'make your heart flutter' moments, and great characters (even background characters that honestly I wouldn't mind knowing more about).

Elijah returns to his hometown with his mom to visit for a few months. He ends up running into Hazel, his one night stand from months ago. He hasn’t heard from her since their incredible night together, and is curious as to why. Hazel is an extremely hard worker, running the veterinary office in the small town of Grand Ridge. She’s thought about reaching out to Elijah on multiple occasions, but couldn’t find the confidence to do so. After seeing him again, old memories and feelings come back. However, in this small town, she knows people will talk and judge. Everywhere Elijah goes, eyes are on him—Hazel doesn’t want that kind of attention, even if she can’t seem to stay away from him.

“I felt like I was missing something vital to my survival. Her lips were my oxygen. And I’d been suffocating for weeks.”

I adored this book. I loved the two main characters—the chemistry between Elijah and Hazel was scorching hot and off the charts. This one wasn’t too spicy, but that one chapter?? Let’s just say Elijah knows what he’s doing. To be fair, Hazel and Elijah did start over and start fresh with their new relationship, which was like a breath of fresh air. We all love a bad boy/good girl, opposites attract story (at least I do), and this one did not disappoint.

I really enjoyed being introduced to all the side characters, including and especially Nora. She’s the kind of friend you always want to have around. Yes, she can be bossy and tell you how it is, but she’s honest. I love Hazel and Nora’s friendship and I would love to even see a future book on Nora. Another side character I would love to see more of is Remi. He was another great friend to Hazel, and the amount of times he would come in to save the day and help her through hard times was so beautiful.

“It’s okay to be you, Hazel.” “It’s okay to be you, too.”

I would define this book has the perfect palette cleanser—fast paced, quick read, steamy, drama-filled, contemporary romance. I loved reading this, and I can’t wait to read more work from this author.

Thank you Marty Vee for the ARC of this story!!

4.5 ⭐️ - ARC Read 📚

We all know how much I love a second chance romance & this book has got to be one of my new favourites! The connection & chemistry between Hazel and Elijah is magnetic - I loved the way they constantly wanted to be in each others space without being overbearing, it reminded me so much of a real life relationship especially in the way that they didn’t jump straight into making big changes in their lives as soon as they realised they loved each other; instead they took is slow & took their time to place those stepping stones together and it was wonderful 🥰

The love I had for each & every character so much; I have no negative points for any of them but my favourite had to be Nora - she was exactly what Hazel needed and I really enjoyed the way they balanced each other out as we had Hazel who would overthink & was a little chaotic (in a good way🫶🏻) followed by Nora who was cool & collected at all times and handled all of the madness that their small town threw at them! They were truly a bestie match made in heaven 👯‍♀️

Overall, this read was great; it had the perfect pace & was balanced extremely well with a great mix of characters, story line and problems for Hazel and Elijah to overcome but wasn’t overcomplicated - this is 100% a great book to use as a palette cleanser between heavier reads or even as a nice little easy read for your tbr!

I really enjoyed seeing Hazel and Elijah come together after pining for one another. There were several laugh out loud moments and moments that made my heart flutter. I was so happy when they got together and heartbroken when they were apart. I'm so happy with their HEA.

Thank you Marty Vee for sending me this ARC!
I read ‘Just Fake Married’ and loved it so when Marty asked if I wanted to ARC read this book, I couldn’t say no.

‘Hazel and Elijah Find Out’ was a fast read but packed with drama, love, 2nd & 3rd chances, pining, and a bit of heartbreak. A great book that leaves you wanting to know more about Hazel and Elijah’s future. I read this in less than 24 hours and was hooked from the start.

I love that Marty Vee had not 1 but 2 spicy scenes from the male’s POV. It just switches the usual narrative you see in other books.

What I’m Starry-Eyed Over:
🤩 The emotional childhood trauma remind me of themes in two other books I’ve loved—For You & No One Else by Roni Loren and Between Never and Forever by Brit Benson. So, if you loved either of those, this might be a great recommendation for you.
🤩 Delectable descriptions in first person dual POV.
🤩 Beautiful MCs—Hazel and Elijah are the best kind of people, so caring, giving, loving.
🤩 Small, Midwest, town—take me out to Benji’s Place! It’s the location of the most gorgeous bar patio scene. All those good feels!
🤩 Forbidden romance & second chance vibes (her workplace mentor is his creepy father).
🤩 Secret crush and instant attraction.
🤩 I’m a sucker for Elijah’s dirty talk with a baby thrown in here and there.
🤩 All the feels—longing written so well.
🤩 Fun, supportive friends and steamy intimacy so well placed between the tougher parts.
🤩 The bachelor auction fundraiser.

What I’m Wishing/Dizzy About:
💫 Miscommunication is frustrating. Running away twice felt sad and depressing for me as a reader. I just need a lot of fun, funny, and steamy parts to balance out the stressful and sad parts. More therapy needed.

ARC Review! Thank you, Marty Vee!!

Hazel is in a bit of trouble.
The veterinary office she bought is running out of money, and Hazel doesn't know what to do. Her friend Nora suggests a bachelor auction that Hazel initially scoffs at, but the men in town seem interested in offering their services, and to help out Hazel.
Much to Hazel's horror, however, Nora has texted her one-night-stand from a year ago, who was amazing and perfect and the town badboy with a history.
When Elijah shows up at the vet's office wanting an explanation for why Hazel hasn't texted him until now, things get heated quickly, in the best ways.

This is a small town, second chance, dual POV contemporary romance with spice, and drama! Some of the town isn't too happy that Elijah is back, or that Hazel bought his father's clinic, or that they're ruining the "good name" of Elijah's father with such a disgusting thing as a bachelor auction! The pearl-clutching women of Grand Ridge are appalled!
I fell in love with Elijah and Hazel slowly, but enjoyed every minute of this fun novel!

I've had the pleasure of getting an ARC copy before for one of Marty's books, and I'm glad I got this one, as she did it again!

HaEFO was a quick, fun read that kept me smiling and sighing on my beach chair.

Hazel is your perpetual wallflower who feels like she must singlehandedly carry her Vet business, while Elijah is the childhood "It" guy whose past isn't exactly what it seems. Naturally, these two collided in adulthood with a bang....

Both Hazel and Elijah have personal growth that comes along quickly, keeping you engaged in the story, and you can't help but root for them (while hoping SOME characters kick rocks). Their circle of friends also leave you wanting their story as well (I'm looking at you, Miss Nora and your twin sister drama).

I saved this book for my vacation and it was worth the wait. It's got some heat level if that's what you're into, but it's got lots of heart and tense moments as well. A perfect beach read for the summer.

If you like some spice with a tug on your heartstrings, this ones for you.

Thank you for my ARC copy, Marty. I can't wait to read what you come out with next!!!!

🌶️🌶️

I enjoyed this second chance romance. I thought that the main characters, Hazel and Elijah were super relatable. Hazel is the recent new owner of a vet clinic, and she is realizing how hard it is to run a business. It’s all work and no play and she’s been stretching herself thin. While having dinner with someone else, she spots Elijah, back in town for a vacation, and all the thoughts of what they did a year ago, passed through her mind. Both of them were too scared/nervous to text the other person over the course of the last year, and when they finally meet again, face to face, their connection is as strong as it was a year ago. Elijah has it bad for Hazel and knows that he wants to be more than just a fling to her. They start to hang out and Elijah makes it clear where he stands with her. Hazel is drowning in work and bills and has no other choice but to hold a fundraiser. Her and her colleagues have this idea of a bachelor auction, where the townsmen offer their labor services as the action items. From gardening to computer help and more. This sets off a frenzy in their small town, some for it and some against, and Hazel hates the attention it’s bringing. Not only is the fundraiser bringing too much attention, but hanging out with Elijah is also bringing attention because of his past. Elijah realizes that Hazel deserves more than the town whispers and stares when they’re together and doesn’t want her to have to deal with that. Hazel and Elijah were both in deep and had to navigate their ever-growing feelings for one another the best that they can. Elijah was just a breath of fresh air. He tried his hardest to make Hazel feel like she could count on him and tried to ease her burdens as best as he could, even by just bringing her lunch. He was clouded with the choices of his past and wanted to make sure that Hazel, and the townspeople, knew that he wasn’t like that anymore. They had this electric connection that just made me swoon and it was so cute. Great read!

“Maybe I didn’t have to be perfect, to never give them anything bad to say, to always be what they expected me to be.”

I absolutely fell for the title and cover first. I mean, FA&FO.
I’m so glad I found out! This second/third chance romance was so beautifully written, and it’s got the right amount of spice!

Hazel has never been the popular one. She’s used to not being in the spotlight and quite prefers it that way.
Elijah, however, is used to the spotlight. Although it’s usually casted on him in a negative way, thanks to his father, he’s gotten quite good at being unbothered by the attention.
One night, Hazel and Elijah messed around. Then they found out how undeniable the chemistry between them was.

“…what simmered between us would ignite with the slightest friction.”

A year later, after doubting everything that could happen if they just contacted one another, they just happen to run into each other.
Everything feels so easy, but Elijah can sense that Hazel hates the attention his reputation brings. He doesn’t know how invested she is and it causes him to question if moving back would be worth it.

“If she didn’t want a relationship, I couldn’t give her anything else.”

Will she be willing to face the scrutiny? Could they make the distance work?

“And I was falling- tumbling, reeling. Head over heels into a pool I hadn’t even realized I was dipping my toe in.”

F**k around, read the book, and find out!

“I don’t want to hurt you.” “Don’t say that. Not while you’re destroying me.”

Thank you for the ARC! 🙌🏼🙏🏼💞💞

Thank you Marty Vee for the ARC read! I enjoyed “Just Fake Married” and couldn’t pass up the chance to read this one!
Started and finished it in one day!
Definitely a nice read if you want a quick pick me up. The storyline was easy to follow as well as all the side characters. I can’t wait to read more about Remy!

Elijah & Hazel Find Out was a cute read!
⇨ High school crush
⇨ Small town romance
⇨ Second chance love
⇨ Dual POV
⇨ Relatable friend group (especially Nora. Everyone needs a Nora)
⇨ Steamy & drama filled

“The woman I like asked me to be here, so I’m here,” he stated.
“You’re here because of me?”
“I am in this town because of you.”

Hazel & Elijah went to the same high school.
She was the nerdy girl who had a crush on the towns well known bad boy.
They had a one night stand and went separate ways.
Some time later Hazel is working as a veterinarian (currently owns Elijah’s dad old vet) and is struggling to make a donation which results in a bachelor auction. The text sent to Elijah by Hazel’s friend, Nora, was definitely quite a way to restart them talking. It was cute to see how their friends were also trying to push them together.
Slowly the two reconnect and become closer. It was also cute to see how their friend groups were also trying to push them towards one another. Elijah & Hazel’s relationship was relatable in many ways and beautiful to read how they blossomed together in the beginning.
The struggles and overcoming of Hazel and Their previous life struggles helps them be stronger together. But will Elijah’s high school reputation and the towns gossip be too much for Hazel to handle? Read to find out how the story ends!

Can’t wait for more work by Marty Vee!

Hazel & Elijah ❤️

🐶Hazel lives in a small town in middle-of-nowhere Michigan, where she grew up. Growing up she harboured a crush on Elijah, the local vet’s son who ran with the in-crowd.

🐾Fast forward, a year after she and Elijah had a one night stand that neither can forget, Dennis the local park ranger that she was in a very casual relationship is breaking up with her when she sees that Elijah is back in town.

🦮He’s there visiting from Detroit, unable to forget the one who got away. Elijah grew up with a manipulative father, in a town where judgement was handed down in sermons from the pulpit and it drove him and mom out of town. Can he be there long enough to find if there can be more with Hazel though?

📚Marty Vee’s stories are very human, vulnerable and both this and her earlier story Truth or Daire are in settings with pups and people 🐶! I enjoyed how the dual POV exposes that things aren’t always what they seem on the outside. Town gossip can be cruel and cut deep, yet the support of close friends helps this couple find their second chance. It’s a fast paced, easy to read cutie 🥰

Tropes:
♡ Second Chance Romance
♡ Small Town
♡ Date Auction
♡ Good Girl/Bad Boy
♡ Boy Obsessed

I got an ARC of this book and I enjoyed the pace of the story, characters, and the banter. When reading, some of the stuff Elijah did was so funny and out of the blue that it was refreshing because he just wanted to see Hazel. That's how deep in love he was with her 😅 However, the emotional maturity to communicate DEF needs to be worked on.

Hazel is a workaholic who wants to save the vet clinic that belonged to Elijah's dad so it develops a lot of insecurities in her character because this is 1. Like the only vet clinic 2. following a suppressor who was loved by the community. She just had a lot of pressure, okay 😭

I would compare the style of this story to one of those cheesy rom-coms on ABC Family or Netflix. It's a very quick read that has little town gossipers, animals especially dogs, nosy mother, and meddling friends/coworkers.

This was an adorable quick read. Mid Spice, Good Plot, & well written!

Hazel & Elijah have known of each other since high school, but Hazel had a crush back then. He was too cool for her.
Many moons later, they have a one night stand of epic proportions & it ruins them for all other people.

The fact that Elijah is seen by the townsfolk as being a pariah, scumbag type guy is truly heartbreaking. All because his teenage hormones attracted him to the daughter of the pastor.... that was sad.

The fact that people talked shit about Hazel was aggravating. Like she's the kindest!!! She gives free services even though her vet clinic can not afford it.
Ugh

I like these two together. I'm glad we didn't see much of the deadbeat dad, I think that would have ruined the book.
The auction idea was so fun. I liked that it was auctioning off their trade versus dates. That was a fun twist

This book was short and sweet and sprinkled with spice! I enjoyed the journey of Elijah coming back into town and jumping right back into Hazel’s arms. Despite much of the town and even his dad against them, they pushed through the noise and stood strong by each other’s sides. Hazel has a heart of gold as the town veterinarian and even though Elijah left town for a while, he always had a place in her heart. Elijah didn’t have the best reputation in town but that didn’t stop him from coming back to visit and getting his girl back.

ARC REVIEW : I really enjoyed this book! The author’s style is such that I want to read more of her books. The plot of a small town lady vet hosting a bachelor auction to help save her business and make a charitable donation is certainly a new one for me. it was well done! I love the way the author describes the chemistry between Elijah and Hazel. That’s what really hooked me in from the beginning. it’s the kind of spicy and sweet love I want. there’s only like 3 s*x scenes so it’s not heavy in the spice but just enough for my preference in a light read. I will be reading more of Marty Vee!!

A small town second chance read. This was a fast passed read. At times it almost seemed to fast passed, but overall it wasn’t too much. The FMC bought the local vet clinic from the MMC dad about a year ago. At the time they had a one night stand, then the MMC went back to his home hours away. While both still thought about the other, neither reached out. Now it’s a year later and the MMC is back in town for a visit with his mom. With the help of a strange text sent by a coworker, they start talking. Things take off and all is looking good. Then the town starts talking and things go south. But in the mix there is a male auction for services and some spice. To see how two people move past the trauma of the past to find love, read this sweet contemporary romance.

Overall this gets a 3.75 stars and 2 peppers.

Cute relatable read. Hazel and Elijah had a little fling. Then Elijah went home. Now he’s back in town for a visit. He left town not on good terms. Hazel took over the vet clinic from Elijah’s dad. She doesn’t like to be center of attention. Her and Elijah decide to give a relationship a try. They both have their fair share of insecurities. Watch as Elijah and Hazel try out their relationship. See what they come up with as a way to raise money for Hazel’s clinic. Will their relationship stand against the towns gossip and their own insecurities? Love the title of the book.

The story between the two of them was so well written, Marty did such a fabulous job of building this story and characters together. I really enjoyed this one. They are both very self conscious and so sure that they don’t deserve the other. It makes me sad, especially for Elijah, who went through a lot as a kid/teen and then once he finally pushed back was labeled as a bad person, a label that stuck around after all the time that had passed. I definitely recommend reading the prequel novella first. While it isn’t necessary it does provide a lot of great backstory and helps you to understand more of why they have some of their hardships throughout the book. I love the side characters and I’d love to know more about them!

Elijah is Hazel's high school crush so when he comes back to their hometown and they hook-up it is a dream come true for her until he disappears and she doesn't call him. A year later he's back for the summer and they pick up where they left off but with his history in the town bringing a dark cloud over the both of them and the drama of judgey people trying to tear them apart they have to figure out what they really want and if the town will have a say in their relationship.

I liked the characters, even the side characters were all so fun. I was kind of surprised that although it started out with a one night stand there was not a ton of spice, the scenes were great and fit well, I was just surprised. I wish it had been longer, I kind of want a whole second book about Hazel and Elijah now to see what happens more but hopefully we'll get glances with the next book.

I truly loved reading this book and I can’t wait to read more from this author! This book was a quick read filled with spicy, drama filled romance. Elijah & Hazel’s connection was beautiful - the things he did for her to continue her dreams and make it all possible! 🩷

I received this book as an arc in exchange for an honest review
This book was amazing! It had me feel all of the emotions especially when it came to Elijah’s thought process. He made my heart hurt. He deserves the world but he doesn’t think he does. I enjoyed this book so much that I did not want it to end. All I wish is for the book to be longer, that way I could have had more of them as a couple and see how everything ended up. I am already excited for book 2! I need to know what is going to happen next

Marty is just funny. I absolutely love reading her characters. While the story is great, it doesn’t even need to be. I fall in love with her characters every time. I feel all the feelings. Waiting eagerly for the next one!

Great read
4.5 ⭐️
This is my first Marty Vee novel and it was such a great read. I recommend reading the prequel first, to get all the goodness.
Elijah needs to overcome his past and Hazel needs to overcome her insecurities.
Full of chemistry, drama, romance, humour, witty banter, pining, spice, sweetness and small town dynamics.
A great fun read with a great HEA.

Thank you to the author.
