Zane Hudson just got custody of his four young children. Only problem is, he can’t watch his kids and run his farm, too. He needs a permanent housekeeper. He has every intention of hiring someone until…
Waverley Madris is two months behind on her rent and about to lose her house and her children. Getting stuck with handsome Zane Hudson and his four kids in the Diner bathroom seems like just the type of thing that was just her luck.
Except she emerges from that bathroom an engaged woman.
It’s a marriage of convenience only... except, after a hard day of work on the farm, they can’t help but look into each other’s eyes, the heads of their children between them, the notes of the music they make together fading off into the twilight, and wonder, separately, if the sweet life they’ve made together might be even more beautiful if they fell in love.
If you love toe-curling sweet romance, real, dynamic characters and strong themes of faith and family, you will love Jessie Gussman's Cowboy Crossing series.
Books in the Cowboy Crossing series:
1. Best Friends in the Show Me State 2. Sold! in the Show Me State 3. A Secret Baby in the Show Me State 4. The Beast Gets His Cowgirl in the Show Me State 5. A Marriage of Convenience in the Show Me State 6. A Second Chance in the Show Me State 7. A Mistletoe Mishap in the Show Me State 8. His Best Friend’s Sister in the Show Me State
As a marriage of convenience story, Ms. Gussman has taken a very different approach to a typical such story. Most such stories are all about the protagonists; however, Ms. Gussman has elected to put the needs of ten children ahead of their parents. Not to say that the parent’s needs are not addressed, it is just that the needs of their children rank just a little higher priority.
Waverly and Zane have known each other since their youth. In fact, Waverly even proposed to Zane at one point. Zane was already involved with his future wife, so he declined her offer. Waverly reluctantly ended up married to a loser due to parental pressure. That abusive husband died after giving her six sons. She is now struggling under the weight of providing for children and she is facing eviction when she cannot pay her rent. Zane, on the other hand, though he had married for love, his wife left him and took his four daughters with her. He has just obtained full custody of his daughters after the courts removed the girls from her home and he is struggling to care for his daughters while operating his farm.
By chance, while using a truck stop restroom, a truck slammed into the rest stop building and they were stranded together overnight until they could safely be extracted from the building. Since they have known each other prior to their respective marriages, it is not as if they are total strangers. But they see the benefits of merging their two families by marrying each other. I was very impressed with how Ms. Gussman described a family council meeting where all ten children and their parents were involved in the decision-making process. That was a scene beautiful to behold. This “marriage of convenience” results in a marvelous blending of two families where true love develops between Waverly and Zane. I heartily recommend this story to all my friends. Five-stars to Ms. Gussman for this delightful and inciteful story.
I borrowed A Marriage of Convenience in the Show Me State from the Kindle Unlimited Program.
Waverley Madris, mother of six boys walks into the ladies room of a scary truck stop bathroom to find a man standing in it and she knows him. Zane Hudson, father of four young girls had a bathroom emergency and took his five year old daughter into the ladies room with another of his girls and is waiting for them when Waverley walks in. She has her three youngest boys with her. Just as the kids are about to finish the floor shakes and it sounds like an explosion went off in the building. Now the power is out too in the dark restroom. This sets the situation for Zane to ask Waverley to marry him and three days later she is married and moving into his house with her six boys and two dogs.
They have a mix-up about number of children between them, 7 or 8 and really 10. Waverley is a wonderful mother and steps right up to do a beautiful job getting all the children to treat each other as family. Zane helps her boys learn new skills on the farm and demonstrates how to be a man of honor. I loved the saying, "Caught not taught." It is a good way to express teaching by example.
The humor is great, the insecurities of both Waverley and Zane are realistic and the honesty is refreshing as A Marriage of Convivence in the Show Me State turns into real romance.
Zane and Waverley’s story beautifully illustrates God’s hand in their lives. It is impossible not to empathize with this couple and be drawn into their captivating story. Both have suffered through terrible marriages that left them feeling unworthy, unloved and rejected. Between them, they have ten children aged five to thirteen, her six boys, him four girls. On a day when both are feeling overwhelmed with the daunting challenges of raising children as single parents, God (or your choice of higher being, or Fate) brings them together in the most unexpected way. They are at a truck stop at the same time with half of their respective broods who need to use the washroom facilities. Zane and Waverley both end up in the ladies washroom with their kids, after all he can’t take his young girls into the men’s room, and Waverley definitely won’t go into the men’s room with her young sons. Her surprise at his presence soon turns to gratefulness when the end up trapped in the washroom for hours. A discussion of both their circumstances leads to a surprising offer and her surprising acceptance. Neither is aware of just how many kids the other really has until after they marry, which makes for a hilarious scene when they realize the scope of their combined brood. While Waverley has hope that this marriage will bring a deeper connection with the man she has long admired, Zane believes that eventually she will leave him too, and his pessimism feels like rejection to her. With the help of his brother Deacon, the encouragement of the children and some serious self-examination, Zane decides he needs to make an effort to forge a bond with his wife. Even if they don’t become lovers, they can be friends who respect and care for each other. Waverley is at first wary about his changed attitude, then intrigued and hopeful. The changes in their relationship is a bonus for them and the children who begin to flourish and become a family unit. A marriage of convenience becomes a love match.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
"A Marriage of Convenience in the Show Me State" is the most recent book in the Cowboy Crossings series. Having been born and raised in Missouri, I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and this entry is the best yet. Jessie Gussman takes the story line we all know so well and gives it an update with some unexpected twists. The story centers on Zane and Waverley, two people whose lives have not turned out to be what they had hoped for and how, through serendipity (divine intervention?) they work together to make their hopes reality. Zane has regained custody of his four girls after a bitter divorce and a long legal battle. Waverley, widowed after more than a decade of marriage to an unkind man, is struggling to make ends meet for herself and her six boys. Cowboy Crossings being a small town, they know of each other but have not spoken in years. That changes when they are trapped in a truck stop ladies room with some of their kids. While the kids sleep, Zane proposes to Waverley - a marriage of convenience that will end her financial struggles, help him with his overwhelming workload and provide each set of kids with two parents committed to their happiness. After the marriage 3 days later, Zane and Waverley begin to deal with the reality of a large blended family and lack of knowledge of each other. There are more than a few humorous situations and lots of learning moments for Zane, Waverley and the kids.
This is what I enjoy most about Jessie Gussman's writing - the situations her characters deal with are very real and through them she teaches us readers how to handle what life throws at us with faith, grace, hard work and humor.
I received a copy of "A Marriage of Convenience in the Show Me State" as a gift from the author. The opinions I'm sharing are my own. And in my opinion, you need to read this book.
A Marriage of Convenience In The Show Me State is not your typical modern day story. Zane is on his way home with 2 of his girls that needed to make an emergency bathroom stop and the only place available is a trashy truck stop that he refuses to leave his girls alone in the ladies restroom. Waverly is on her way to meet a customer to deliver her baked goods with 3 of her boys when they need an emergency bathroom stop and she too can only find the trashy truck stop and she tells them they will be using the ladies room as she refuses to leave their side. When they run in the ladies room she sees a man standing there. They start talking as they seem to recognize each other and sure enough they had went to school together and she had crushed on Zane to the point of asking him to marry her before she had to marry Dexter that was a mean husband until his death. Zane had turned her down and married Vicki and they had 4 daughters before she left him and took the girls. When a vehicle runs into the truck stop and shakes the building to where the restroom door jams, it locks them in there so they start talking and by the time they are rescued the next morning they had agreed she needed help to keep her boys and a place to live while he needed a wife to take care of the house, children, cooking, etc. The funny part is they never discussed how many total children they had until 3 days later after Deacon had married them they return to the farm Zane owned and there stood his Mom laughing when they see they had 10 children! A story to pull on all your emotions and end with you cheering the family to bigger and better years ahead.

My review today is about the audible book, A Marriage of Convenience in the Show Me State. This is book five in the series Cowboy Crossing Western Sweet Romance. This book is well-written, humorous, and full of faith. This is a delightful story and I know you will love it.
Zane Hudson just received custody of his four girls. He's not sure how he can take care of them and his farm. He must have help. He and his two daughters are traveling when he must stop for a potty break. The only place to stop is a terrible gas station. He takes his two daughters inside he can't let them go in alone in this horrible place.
Waverly Madris is two months behind on her rent. She is meeting a man for a baking order but doesn't have enough gas to make it to the meeting. She must stop for gas. After filling the tank she takes her three boys to the restroom. They can't go in alone in this awful place so they go in the ladies' restroom. A man is standing there. She recognizes him from her school days.
A hilarious journey as they are trapped inside the restroom for hours and come up with the plan of a marriage of convenience as they both need help. God has a plan for this new family. A plan for hope and a future. God has a plan for you too. A plan for peace and for destruction, give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life.
We are back in Cowboy Crossing and this time it’s Zane Hudson’s story. Zane has four daughters who he loves dearly and finally has full custody of them. But as happy as he is , he’s also overwhelmed. How can he take care of the girls and the farm? Is a housekeeper the solution? Waverley Madris is a young widow with 6 boys of her own. She’s barely making ends meet and might be homeless if she can’t get her baked goods sold. An accident occurs in a truck stop where Zane and Waverley and a few of their children get stuck for hours in a bathroom. They each need the other and in those few hours in isolation, a marriage of convenience is decided. But as feelings are starting to develop, even Zane can’t trust that he won’t be left behind. It’s happened once, what says it won’t happen again? In the meantime, Waverley has created a home where all the kids are thriving and getting along. Will they take a leap of faith and realize they can trust each other? Will they allow the feelings to become a reality? This was a sweet, touching story about family, hope , trust, new beginnings, faith and love. Another winner for this talented author. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Waverley is now a widow with six boys...😳! She is very close to losing her small rental and survives by selling baked goods.
Zane is divorced with four daughters... he needs help, but is also completely filled with bitterness over what his ex did to him and their family. He has vowed to never again give his heart to a woman.
Waverley has always admired Zane from their high school years together, and even proposed to him years ago! Now, about a dozen years later they meet again. In a very unusual place!
I enjoyed this story, but got a little irritated with Zane’s obsession with remaining aloof and untrusting of Waverley. Not all women are like Vicky. The only other part I didn’t like too much was at the very end, when that annoying Mr. Feely came into their kitchen for some of Waverley’s baked goods. His comments truly upset sweet little son, John, who flew out the door in anguish, yet Mom didn’t run after him.... she opted to be polite to their man who was, in my opinion, too flirtatious with a married woman.
All in all, though, it was a great book. My second favorite in the series, I think 😉
When Zane finally gets custody of his four daughters, he realizes that being a full-time single dad and farmer is not working out. He definitely needs a nanny or housekeeper, preferably both. While talking to Waverley, she made him realize that he actually needs a wife. Being herself in a bind, they accept marrying each other for convenience; Zane would become the father to her six boys, protect, nourish, and put a roof over their heads while Waverley would mother his four daughters, cook, clean, and take care of the children’s homework while Zane farms… The story was very beautiful, especially the parts in which Waverley realized Zane’s insecurities and was willing to make the first steps to help him get over his fear of rejection. For someone who seemed very stubborn on the brink of being emotionally crippled, Zane became very attuned to his wife’s needs and what would make her happy. It was heartwarming to read about the development of the couple as their family grew together. Enjoy this story about a couple who bring in scars from their past who help each other heal and bring happiness to their family.
Waverly Madris is always scrambling to make enough money to pay rent and support her six sons since her husband died and now, with the cost of repairs to her oven and a hefty emergency room visit for one of her boys, there is no way she will be able to pay their rent. If they get evicted and she can’t support her family the state will take her children.
Zane Hudson finally has custody of his four daughters but now he needs to find a full-time housekeeper-nanny-cook or he will lose them because he still has a full-time job as a rancher and his dad-skills could definitely use some help. Trapped in a crowded restroom in a sleazy truck stop is an unlikely place to conduct a job interview, but it is an even stranger place for a marriage proposal.
Jessie Gussman’s clean romances always include a message of faith that is uplifting. This story is no exception. I received an advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary. I finished the book in one day and enjoyed every page of it.
Zane a young divorced man father of four girls 12 and under. He was on his way to deliver a bull he had sold to a farmer and two of his girls were with him on the truck ride when the youngest needed a bathroom break. Badly, her sister was watching her and kept saying soon Dad. He pulled into a run down service centre but would not let them go without him in the ladies the room. In comes a young mother with three of her boys and of course she is in the taking them into the ladies room as she does not trust them to use the men's washroom in the dump of a stop off. Low and behold there is a guy in here, what fore. A wild shakeup occurs to the building and they have to stay until someone can get them out. Zane talks to the ladie and decides to ask her to marry him ,she says yes. The wedding the next day she takes her six children to their new home and they meet his daughters. What a time ten children 13 and under. This is my review and mine alone, Norma Gorrill
This is the book I've been waiting to read for a while and Jessie Gussman did not disappoint!! It features one of my favorite tropes and I enjoyed every minute of it!! Zane and Waverley were so cute together, and I just loved their story, their getting to know each other and helping the other overcome and heal their hurts, scars, and insecurities.
Of course, it was all the more enjoyable having the story performed by none other than Jessie Gussman's favorite narrator, Mr. Jay Dyess ;) (and yes, I *finally* get why she and everyone else are fangirling about him and his voice). He was fantastic with not only Zane and Waverley but also with any of the kids (and the fact that this family has 10(!) definitely ups the wow factor while at the same time shows off his skills). Oh! And I love that Jessie has added a singing scene in every one of her books so far in this series since Jay performed it so well! 🙌
Overall, a fantastic audiobook experience that had me LOL and swooning at all the right times thanks to the powers of the Gussman/Dyess combo. ~ 5 stars

This is the third book I have read in the series. Though you don’t have to read them in order, I feel like it might be best to because you get introduced to all the other siblings and their wives. So that could be a potential spoiler for the previous books, but not really. I wasn’t confused though and was able to keep up. I will go back and read the books I have missed in between. Waverley and Zane were great characters and the way they met up again was cute and different. The fact that they didn’t realize how many kids they had between them was funny. This was a sweet read. I wish to have felt more chemistry and longing between the characters, but still keeping it clean obliviously. I just like feeling the attraction and rooting for someone to make a move. That could have been just me though. But I did enjoy the book and I am excited to read more in the series. I received an ARC, but all opinions are my own and will always be honest.
This was an enjoyable story of Zane Hudson and Waverly. They knew each other from school but were of a different popularity status. Zane did not notice her, but she had a crush on him. She even asked him to marry her once. After his divorce and four girls and after the death of her husband and six boys, they marry for convenience. Waverly has a personality that cannot be denied. Zane is insecure and has blocked all ideas of falling in love with his wife. Things begin to soften Zane. They work together as a family on the farm and in the house. The children show maturity and are eager to learn. This book is a wonderful picture of home, family, teamwork, and love, as well as overcoming strongholds that prevent one from moving forward and embracing change. I received a complimentary copy of this book and have chosen on my own to write an honest report. This is a good series about six brothers in Missouri. I am ready to read Reid's story.
I really enjoyed this story about Zane and Waverly, I love how they met each other, its funny and what they talked about was right out of a romance novel but so funny it could be real life. Ms. Gussman has a way with words that makes you want to stay glued to your phone as Mr. Dyess brings the story to life. They are a great combination if you want a book that holds your attention because the story is so not only fun but also has things that are so lifelike that when my husband and I listen we look at each other and laugh because it is something we have done! I have to say I admire Waverly for taking on what she did even though she really didn't know the whole situation until the next day. I have enjoyed all the books in the Show Me State series and I'm looking forward to the next book. I received a free code from the publisher to listen to this book on Audible.com and also an ebook to read myself. This review is totally my own honest opinion of a great book.
This is at least the third time I’ve read this book, and I still enjoy it. I love a good marriage-of-convenience story, and this one-afternoon read fits the bill. The way they meet (again) makes me smile every time.
Zane and Waverly have no idea what’s going to happen when they both need to stop at a rundown truck stop. They don’t realize their lives are about to completely be turned upside down. Later, Waverly’s patience and calmness with the kids and Zane’s willingness to step up and provide for his new and expanded family encourages me in my parenting. Both of them have some insecurities to work through, but admiration and love help those dissipate. The wisdom sprinkled throughout the story results in a lot of blue highlights for me.
I may have to go back and reread the rest of this series, because those Hudson boys are just the kind of men I’d want my girls to marry.
This book has the most creative way for an adult couple to meet! Although they had known each other since childhood, and they haven't exactly kept track of each other's lives. Zane has just gotten custody of his four daughters. Waverly is widowed and has 6 boys. After they get stuck together in the dark, they decide that they will marry. Unbeknownst to either one is the total number of children involved. They only discover that they didn't have the complete picture until after they were married.
Now they need to figure out how to blend their families and keep their lives moving forward. Although the families melt quickly and easily, both of the adults have been burned in the past and aren't too sure they want a real marriage.
This is a sweet, fun story and it can be read by anyone.
Another uplifting and excellent story in this Cowboy Crossing series! Jessie Gussman's books continue to touch my heart and soul with each new addition. This story of Waverly and Zane does not disappoint! I am always amazed with the stories created by some authors and this one ranks high on the scale with originality! This couple have it in spades with their combined families, but boy do they manage to pull it out and create a touching story that will have the most discerning of readers smiling as the story continues to unfold from one chapter to the next. The author said this was a book written by the Lord and I must say he's got a light heart and sense of humor (if I can do that?). I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading - romance.
I received an ARC copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest review with my own personal opinions. VICKI FROM WYOMING
• My interest in this story was immediately caught with the funny road trip scene with Zane and his two daughters. A scene all parents can relate to. A scene full of panic and humor. I always look forward to a generous sprinkling of humor throughout most of Jessie Gussman's writing.
• The descriptions of locations and emotions were well done, easy to visualize, and to feel. I felt a part of the scenes.
• The pacing of the story was neither too slow nor too fast. There was a smooth, coherent flow to this book.
• I did not find this Christian romance preachy. Religion was just a natural part of the characters' lives. No lectures.
I was given an advance copy by the author. My review was voluntary and my opinions were my own. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author.
Both are single parents, and while having their children with them is the most important thing in their world, each has come to a point where without, help they will lose everything that matters the most. Neither is looking for a marriage partner but accept the fact that they will do anything to keep their children with them. With this as their primary focus, they are not prepared as they work their way through all it takes to build a real relationship. When you add having ten children between them, there is bound to be laughter, chaos and love. I love how there is more of a focus on day to day life as they become a blended family rather than adults who reach out to satisfy their own desires without considering the needs of their children. This is a clean yet swoon worthy read that will capture not only your attention but also your heart.
Jessie Gussman is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Zane has a broken heart from his wife Vicki walking away from him and taking their four daughters. After Vicki abandoned them in a field outside of town, the judge awarded Zane full custody. But he's struggling to juggle taking care of his farm and cattle and being a single Dad. Waverly is a widow left with 6 young boys to raise on her own. She bakes to make enough money to pay the rent but when a series of difficulties arise, she is about the get evicted. Under strange circumstances, Zane proposes a marriage of convenience. Waverly actually proposed to Zane about a decade ago when her parents wanted her to marry Derrick but at the time, Zane only had eyes for Vicki. This delightful story moves swiftly and I couldn't put it down!
Jessie Gussman has knocked it out of the park again! I have said it before, each book of Jessie's is better than the last and they are all good. The author is a master at grabbing your attention on page one. When the first line in the book is "Daddy, I have to pee" you know it's going to be entertaining. The story flows so well and I could not put it down. It was fun watching Zane and Waverly's relationship grow from being trapped in the women's bathroom of a rundown truck stop to mutual respect and attraction and finally love. And with 10 kids between them there was never a dull moment. I received this copy free from the author and am under no obligation to leave a review. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am freely sharing my opinion.
I loved this new addition to the series. I loved this new addition in the Cowboy Crossings series. This faith-based gem shows what God can do in the lives of our characters. Zane and his daughters were lovely characters. You will find as you read that it was hard for Zane in fact it took years but now the girls were his. In chapter two you will meet Waverley and a few of her sons. The author did a splendid job showcasing how hard it is for a single parent. It is beautifully written. The blending of Zane and Waverley’s lives was a pleasure to read. If you love faith-based books this is a must-read I highly recommend it. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
What a fun, cute interesting story. I thought it was funny how Zane and Waverly decided together on a marriage of convenience and even more funny when they found out how many children they had between them. She had six sons and he had just gotten custody of his four daughters. I cannot imaging that many children in one house. It was interesting to see where the children got their names too.
I really liked their family time spent reading and singing together and their family meeting. This was a second marriage for both of them and it was so nice that Waverly finally felt "loved, admired, and respected" and that Zane's wife had become his best friend. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
I really like this series by Jessie Gussman. I love how each of the books is about a different brother who has had a hard time with love. I liked how the couple mets in this book since it is kind of unusual. I really liked how Waverley showed Zane that she was going to stick around and that she is nothing like his ex-wife. I loved how that kids helped him to realize that he needed to woo his wife. I could see the things that happened in this book actually happening in real life. This was a very sweet story that I really enjoyed.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
this was an absolutely amazing book to read! I have read several of this author's books and found this one to be one of the best yet. The characters are well developed and very likable. The story line was wonderful. I couldn't put this book down! There are some comical parts to this book - I especially love when the main characters figure out how many kids they have between the two of them! There are also some heart-warming and realistic parts to this book. I definitely recommend reading A Marriage of Convenience in the Show Me State!
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
I give this book two muddy thumbs up and a Baker’s dozen out of twelve stars! Waverly (formerly Inez) and Zane (not his brother Loyal?) are engaged to be married in less than conventional circumstances. They’ve known of each other most of their lives, but do they truly know each other, enough to make it last? When they are married three days later, they are both determined that the kids become our, ours, and ours. The question is, has obligation muddied the playing field or will passion also blossom in this marriage of convenience? I received an ARC copy of this book and I am leaving a voluntary review.
This story will have you rolling with laughter, holding your breath when things get serious and give you sense of belonging as you read along. One of my favorite scenes is where, Zane and Waverly finally understand how many children they actually have together. I laughed not only out loud , but also deeply as I couldn't believe they never asked the other. ( I actually had to explain why I was laughing so hard to my family as I don't normally belly laugh while reading).
Just goes to show that having a blended family is possible, but definitely not without some hard work ~
Loved this unique concept of getting stuck together in a Gas Station b/r!
Have enjoyed this whole series of a family of six brother's who all had problems with their first marriage and then their second chances at love and life. This story was especially entertaining. Zane proposes to a woman he knew in High School cause he needs a nanny/housekeeper for his girls. Waverley accepts, because she needs a stable home and a good male role model for her boys. Think of The Brady Brunch with a twist! Favorite scene: They just got married and don't know how many kids they have...
