He’s dating one sister and falling for the other.

Originally diagnosed with Lyme’s Disease, Esther MacCartney is frustrated because she’s been bedridden for months and doctors can’t tell her if she’ll ever be well again. The only person who’s visited her regularly is her sister’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, Monroe.

He makes her laugh and treats her like he enjoys her company. But her sister has a job offer off the farm and Esther is afraid Monroe will propose to get her to stay.

Monroe Hutchison is spending the winter in Prairie Rose, Iowa, and thinking about settling there permanently. The MacCartney sister that’s he’s been kind of dating would make an excellent farmer’s wife, but it’s her younger sister, Esther, who makes him laugh. He enjoys her company and sometimes forgets that she never gets up from the couch and could never handle the rigorous life of a farmer’s wife.

If he kisses one, can he forget about the other? But which sister does he want to kiss?

Will Esther ever get better? Could Monroe sacrifice the dream he’s had since childhood to be able to care for the sister who captivates him? Or will he be like everyone else and overlook her charm because of her sickness?

They’re all wrong for each other, but why does being together feel so right?

Jessie always seems to make you have something in common with at least one of her characters! This wasn't any different. I loved Esther! Her attitude was mostly positive even though, she showed a human side to get down sometimes! I'm really looking forward to Candace's Story.

Encouraging

This book deals with a difficult issue in a sensitive and understanding manner. Chronic fatigue is a really tough issue to deal with in a constructive manner. The book is really good at enabling us to see how even 'bad' things can be good if we allow God to work in us through them. A good lesson for all of us. The story has a happy ending.

A Great Story About Great Challenges and Trust

Esther McCartney has been confined to the couch in her family's farmhouse for nearly a year with Lyme disease, mono, and loneliness. After such a long absence, it seems that she's been forgotten by most of her visitors. Monroe Connelly, the on-again, off-again "just friends" date of Esther's sister Candace, is one exception.

Monroe sits and talks with Esther while he waits for Candace to get ready for one of their infrequent dates. After every conversation, she's smiling, feeling emotionally encouraged and spiritually challenged. But she holds back from falling for her sister's supposed boyfriend, despite her natural attraction to him.

Monroe, meanwhile, is working up the courage to tell Candace that her wants to terminate their pretend dating arrangement, which was only supposed to last for a couple of months but has stretched on to nearly a year, causing the small-town gossips to pair them romantically and dismiss their "just friends" claim as a smokescreen. Esther, for one, is convinced. Monroe, however, is determined to tell her the truth about the pretend nature of their "dating" relationship to free her conscience and allow her to go out with him.

This book, number five in the Heartland Cowboy Christmas Sweet Romance series, contains a lot of valuable lessons about God's timing and His best for us differing from our expectations, about being honest all the time if you want to be believed (Monroe does this and earns Esther's trust after being accused by the town of
committing a sin he did not commit), and about using your free time wisely by reading the Bible and contemplating its applicability to your own life. Esther does this last one, begins blogging, and attracts enough advertisers to contribute to the farm's income, though not in the way she did when she was athletic and active. Seeing her despondency, Monroe explains that God's will for her life might not be what she wants, but she can accept it and let Him turn it to good. She does, and He does!

As someone whose health issues have left me without what I considered my defining gifts, I identified strongly with Esther. Her struggles mirrored mine. Likewise, Monroe is believable as a man of honor, and I would like to talk with him. Jessie Gussman draws her characters so true to life that they seem more like friends than cardboard cutouts.

I highly recommend Heartland Giving to all fans of Jessie Gussman and anyone with an interest in Iowa farming, small-town dynamics, and overcoming challenges of a physical and spiritual nature. Happy reading!

I love this book about the story of Esther and Monroe. Esther has 2 sisters and together they have run their family farm, since their parents died in a plane crash while on an anniversary trip. Monroe has been seeing Esther’s sister for approximately a year, but only he and Meg know that they just have an arrangement where he pretends to be her boyfriend, but they don’t really care for each other in that way. Esther has become very ill over the past few months, doctors unable to diagnose her, but thinking she most likely has Lyme’s Disease. All she is able to do is lie on the couch and she has started writing a blog. Every time Monroe comes to pick Meg up for a date, he visits with Esther, and they truly do enjoy other’s company so much! Monroe has encouraged Esther to use this down time to get closer to the Lord, read her Bible more, pray more, and see what He is trying to accomplish by having her go through a time like this. She’s been getting stronger, a little at a time, taking supplements and vitamins, and when Monroe comes to their house, she is starting to sit up and even care what she looks like. She’s so afraid that she’s falling in love with this man, her sister’s “boy”friend, even though she’s never seen her sister act the least bit interested in him. Shoot, they don’t even hold hands! There’s something fishy about them! So, during the book, things happen that keep causing Monroe to rescue Esther and he’s dying to tell her how much he loves her, but can’t until he gets out from under his agreement with Meg! After all, he’s a man of his word!! This is a wonderful, sweet book that you must get so you can enjoy it as much as I did!! I don’t want to ruin it for you, and I know you will be so happy with all of the scenes, especially the ending! Get your copy now before you forget! 🙏❤️🙏❤️

This story is filled with hope in a loving God as Esther MacCartney has been dealing with a sickness that has kept her fatigued and bedridden, unable to help her sisters with their farm. She could have gotten bitter over her situation but her sister Meg's boyfriend, Monroe Hutchson had visited her throughout the many long months of her battle with this sickness and encouraged her to have a better perspective. The many things she has learned about herself and her deepening relationship with the Lord has caused her to write a blog that has actually turned into a way of earning money to help her sisters. Now with her sister Meg looking for a job away from the farm, Esther realizes her interactions with Monroe may be coming to an end.

Monroe Hutchison has been working hard with his father from a young age. After a busy harvesting season, this year he has decided to spend the winter in Prairie Rose, Iowa, instead of going with his father and brothers to harvest fields in South Africa. He has a dream to own his own farm someday and may decide to settle permanently in Prairie Rose. He is such a man of integrity and despite his growing feelings for Esther MacCartney, he has kept his promise to her sister Meg to act like her boyfriend. With Meg leaving the farm, he wants to end their fake relationship so that he is free to make his feelings known to Esther.

I always enjoy the wonderful descriptions of the towns that Jessie Gussman writes about. The small towns where people really care about one another and and come to each others aid when they need help. The difficulties and sacrifices of farm life jump off the pages of the book.

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

Esther and Monroe’s story is a beautifully written, sweet friends to lovers romance. Esther’s long debilitating illness has made her feel like a burden to her family. Monroe has been a frequent visitor to the farm throughout her illness, and even though his purpose is to see her older sister, he has often taken the time to check in on Esther and engage her in conversation. One such conversation helped change her outlook on her illness and her relationship with God. Instead of wondering why me and being depressed, she has come to see her illness as an opportunity to become closer to God, to accept his will and to move forward. She has even found away to contribute to the farm’s finances while still dealing with her illness. Monroe’s visits have become a highlight for her and she tries very hard to accept that he is with her sister, though they don’t really act like a couple in love, and she herself has developed tender feelings for him. Monroe is an honorable, steadfast and hardworking man with a kind heart and a willingness to help others in any way that he is able to do. He made an agreement with one sister, but is slowly falling in love with the other. Esther’s courage, determination and grace have captured his heart though he cannot even tell her of his feelings until her sister releases him form their agreement. Esther’s future in regards to her health is still unknown which is another barrier, at least for her, to any future relationship between them. Monroe and Esther’s story is a testament to love and faith in God’s will and guidance. I believe this book will be one I reread often.

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Heartland Giving tells the story of Esther McCartney, one of the three McCartney sister's that live on a working farm and handle it themselves since their parents died. But now Esther has become ill to the point she has no energy to do very much and certainly not caring for the pigs. Meg and Candace picks up the slack. When a year goes by, Esther is growing by studying the Bible more but feels she is not getting much better and wonders if this is her future.

Monroe Hutchison had made a deal with Meg to pretend to be a couple for a month or two but now it has turned into about a year. He has fallen in love with Esther during the time he talks with her as he waits on Meg to get ready for one of their dates or when Monroe just stops by to check on Esther. He cannot break his agreement with Meg but he has decided he will have to talk to her for him to be free to date Esther. The only thing Monroe knows about why he is pretending to date Meg is because Meg wanted to make someone think she was in a relationship. Right after Meg releases Monroe from their agreement she has already taken a job in Fort Dodge and comes home to visit on the weekends. So when people start to see Monroe and Esther together they asks questions. They tell them as Monroe has all the time that he and Meg are just friends. When Monroe and Esther, Aunt Bev and Patty take the early ride for the Holiday Lights they all are surprised when they see Meg and Candace in the parking lot waiting on the later ride. Meg had been keeping a secret and nobody knew about it but all looked at Monroe for an answer. Esther was upset but she knew Monroe never would lie. She tells Monroe she believes him but about the town?

What a sweet story this is!  I really fell for the hero, who was dating one of three sisters- rather halfheartedly- but was falling in love with another.  And the heroine, who started out more or less bedridden but was getting stronger throughout the book, had such an amazing attitude about what she was going through that it made me really examine my own frustrations.  .While this situation had all the signs of potential danger of  jealousy and even family splits, the sensitive way the author handled things, uncovering truth one layer at a time, left me smiling.  And the surprise ending suddenly made things make sense. The way the hero and all three sisters pulled together to help each other as well as others in the community was beautiful.  I admired the way both the hero and heroine were willing to carefully decide which things mattered most in their lives, and watch how they learned to be flexible with the goals they set.   An excellent read!

This newest book in this captivating series brings Preston's neighboring 3 sisters finding their own HEA, one book at a time. This first book grabbed my attention as Esther has spent the last several months mostly bedridden as her 2 sisters, Candace and Meg, picked up the work that she was unable to do. The reader gets to share in the love deeply engrained in these sisters as each one just picks up where another left off. The last sister anyone ever expected to marry would, naturally, have been Esther! But with God's grace, a special man that loves her and of course her sisters, she just might find her own HEA first. A very touching story which deals with chronic fatigue, but deals more in faith that God is still working in people's lives. I just love any book that Jessie Gussman writes and if you like Christian romance you won't be disappointed.

I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review with my own personal opinions.

Is she too broken for love?

Esther, Candace, and Meg have worked together on their family farm all their lives but now Esther is suffering from an illness that has left her bed-ridden and unable to function. The only benefit of her disability is the growth in faith it has bestowed on her that she has been able to share with others. Meg’s boyfriend, Monroe, has been a strong support and it is becoming hard for Esther to ignore her feelings for him. Even if Meg breaks up with Monroe what chance would Esther have of being a good wife when she can barely get off the couch most days?

Monroe never thought his agreement with Meg would come back to haunt him but he finds himself enjoying the time he spends with Esther. Can he convince Meg to end their agreement and set him free?

This story has a strong message of faith and acceptance. This is a clean romance that I really enjoyed.

Esther has been bed-ridden for the past year while she struggles with Lyme Disease - at least that's what the doctors think. Monroe is dating her sister, Meg. When he comes to visit, he always talks with Esther while he waits for Meg. Monroe is only a fake boyfriend for Meg, but no one knows that but he and Meg. As he is falling in love with Esther, he knows he has to talk to Meg and get out of the arrangement they have.

Esther is used to being independent and working the farm. The past year has been hard on her. God has grown her through this experience, but she feels like she is giving up all her dreams of being a farmer's wife.....or even a wife at all.

Such a sweet story of having faith in God and His plan for you. You will love the sisters and Monroe and the entire town of Pairie Rose.

This story touched me in a very special way because of Esther's struggles with chronic illness and chronic fatigue. All of the challenges she faced, the frustrations she had about being unable to contribute, her fears about the future, are all things I could relate to, and Jessie wrote them so well!

I especially loved the discussion in the barbershop when Monroe went to get his hair cut. While the book is a love story, it's also very much a story about where God is in the midst of our struggles, and how we respond to that.

Jay Dyess does an exceptional job of reading the different characters, and his ability to express what each person is feeling just keeps getting better. He's especially good at conveying the different levels of tiredness Esther experiences. You can clearly hear the difference between her just being a bit tired, and overwhelmingly exhausted.

Patience...
something we probably could all use more of. Even with the slight negative thoughts and feelings Esther had, she is still an amazing person to me, always putting others before her and doing anything mostly very small in her eyes, but larger than life to others. I wasn't too big of a fan of Meg this time around, knew she was hiding something, but WOW! And of course, the glue in the middle, Candice ready and more than willing to do above and beyond.
Monroe held my heart, not romantic in any way, but such a gentleman in his thoughts, actions and deeds.
I think Aunt Deb was little more than a tad deceiving about Patty, the girls were a lot more understanding than I think I would've been in the same situation. But as they say, the Lord knows better than we do.

Esther was suffering from the effects of Lyme disease and was unable to help her sisters run their farm. Instead of feeling sorry for herself and falling into depression she sought out her faith to become a better person. I really liked her attitude and how she brightened the lives of those she was close to.
Monroe was dating her sister Meg and he would often stop to talk to Esther when no one else seemed to care. He seemed to develop feelings for her and saw beyond her illness to the person she was and how her faith had changed how she felt. He realized God had plans for him too. I really enjoyed their story and the other characters in the book. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

Esther has a hard time to accept her new, weakened health condition. Especially seeing her worth when there is so much work on the farm to do where she is no help at all, only adding a burden for her sisters to take care of. So when Monroe wants to have a relationship with her, she is convinced she is not wife material…
Living similar health issues as Esther, lots of her thoughts were well known to me. My husband had comparable statements as Monroe ☺. However, we have another theological point of view. Still, this was a great story, even if it’s not easy to see oneself in someone else and see all that the character is (I am) thinking wrong.

Monroe and Esther needed to discover and accept that God’s plan for their lives might be different than their own plans for themselves and to see the good that could come from their trials. Although Esther’s illness might seem like a disaster, God gave her the blessing of growing closer to Him, making her a better person. But she tried to keep her feelings for her sister’s boyfriend under wraps because she was a loving, loyal sister. How will this odd situation work out? Wonderfully well written, great evolving characters, along with realistic drama.

Received ARC and this is my honest review.

This is my new favorite from Jessie Gussman. It is different from most of her stories in that the characters don’t just show how to “live your religion” but actually have conversations about thoughts and feelings of what has meaning in their lives.

It captures a spirituality that resonates with me. I think one of the most challenging issues a believer has is that of “Thy will be done, not mine” and how we do what we want to do.

Jessie is the quintessential storyteller with relatable characters and engaging storylines.
I received an ARC of this book as I am on Ms. Gussman’s early readers team. The options are purely mine.

Enjoyed Monroe and Esther's story. Monroe had always dreamed of owning his own farm. Esther was raised and worked on a farm her whole life, until lyme disease took her livelihood. Now, she sits on the couch feeling useless, but trying to contribute to the farm. Monroe starts out with an arrangement with Meg, her older sister. But while Monroe waits, he and Esther become friends. He encourages her to find a different purpose in her life. And they both look forward to their visits. He is so caring of Esther, and Meg finally released Monroe of the agreement so he can persue Esther. I cheered them on, and the lyme disease symptoms were spot on. If you like clean, heartfelt stories, you can't go wrong with 'Heartland Giving'. I highly recommend. I received this book from the publisher. The thoughts and comments are my own.

This is a true Christian love story. Esther had become sick and couldn't help her sisters on the farm. Monroe and Meg had an arrangement that he would appear to be her boyfriend. he spent a lot of time talking to Esther while he was waiting for Meg to finish getting ready for their "date". He started having feelings for Esther but couldn't say anything because of his arrangement with Meg. Esther also realized she had feelings for him but wouldn't say anything because he was Meg's boyfriend". This story is beautifully written and so uplifting.

I received a free ARC, and this is my honest opinion.

• My thoughts about this book:

• I really enjoyed the wonderful characters Jessie Gussman created in this touching story. Monroe was an amazing man and Esther was a determined woman trying to make the most of being saddled with a debilitating illness.

• I loved the way the Christian themes were woven into this book.

• I like the witty humor and Jessie Gussman's writing style.

• I felt the story was quite philosophical and religious. However, I liked the themes woven throughout this story.

I was given an advance copy of this book by the author. My review was voluntary and my opinions were my own. I enjoyed this story and I'm looking forward to reading more stories by this author.

Monroe has been Meg's date of choice for about a year. They are just friends, or so they keep saying. Monroe's interest lies more in Meg's younger sister, Esther. Esther was diagnosed with Lyme disease and is constantly fatigued and feels like she is not much use to anyone. She can't even really help with the farm's chores. She feels pretty useless and is certain that no one will ever want her for a wife. When she notices that she looks forward to Monroe's visits, she feels guilty because she would never hurt her sister, Meg. Is it possible to get what she has always wanted without hurting her sister?

I had an Advance Readers Copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. This newest book in this series is no less interesting that the other ones. Jessie Gussman does a great job telling a story! With this one, Esther who has been suffering from long term Lyme disease complications, begins to feel better, and partly because of Monroe’s attention when he comes to take her sister out as a friend. Their growing feelings for each other are questioned by Esther because of her sister. You’ll have to read it to find out what happens!

Another very special story from Jessie Gussman with characters that have learned to grow in their faith and accept what God has planned for their lives. Monroe has an agreement with Meg to date each other, even though they aren’t romantically involved. During his time with Meg, he has found himself attracted to her sister, Esther. Esther has been suffering from an illness that has left her very weak and incapacitated from exhaustion. She enjoys the times that Monroe has visited with her while waiting for her sister. Their discussions have made her realize she can’t give in to depression.

I received an ARC to review: the 5th book in the series - Monroe and Esther's story - is another excellent read. Jessie explores some nuggets of wisdom when it comes to God allowing bad things to happen in our lives and how He works all these for the good of those who love and trust Him.
Esther & Monroe's unique journey to love is sweet and heartfelt even though they hit a few potholes on the way! As with all of Jessie's books, a highly recommended read that with both build your faith in God and feed the soul while entertaining.

Esther has been homebound and bedridden for the last year with what Doctor's believe is Lyme disease. Monroe is dating her sister or atleast that is what everyone believes. Esther could have let her circumstances make her bitter and angry but she uses it as an opportunity to draw closer to God and deepen her relationship with him. Monroe finds time to visit with Esther often, he is actually one of her only visitors during this time and he provides her with needed encouragement and helps her keep her positive attitude and thoughts. Will what starts out as friendship turn into a forever love?

Heartland Giving

Monroe and Esther have such a wonderful story. Monroe had been dating Esther’s sister Candace off and on for about a year. During that time he has gotten to know both of her sisters but he visited with Esther the most while waiting for Candace and begins caring for her. Esther had been ill for over a year and unable to help her sisters with the ranch. She has grown to care a lot for Monroe but would never allow herself to fall for him because he was dating her older sister. They could never work as a couple…..Or could they?

Torn between love for one woman and loyalty to another

I loved everything about this story. It’s so much more than a romance. It’s about family ties and loyalty to a friend. It’s about finding good in bad times. It’s about making the most of a tough situation. It’s a story of chasing your dreams and changing dreams along the way.
This story is beautifully written. It’s deep yet fun. It’s finding forever while making the best of today.
I could read this book over and over and never tire of it — that’s how good it is.

Awesome read by an awesome storyteller

I love Jessie Gussman's books. She knows how to keep readers interested until the end. I can't wait to read the rest of this series. Monroe is helping Candace out by pretending to be her boyfriend. The more he talks to Esther the more he falls for her. Esther is sick and gets exhausted easily. She's falling for Monroe but doesn't feel she would be a good mother or wife. I love how she refuses to act on her feelings because of her sister. I love that Monroe keeps his word to Candace until she gives him permission to tell her.

I enjoyed this fifth book in the "Heartland Cowboy Christmas Sweet Romance" series. The characters are admirable and relatable. The story encapsulates Christian fiction. It is the story of Esther and Monroe. Both characters make decisions about their lives and how they are going to live based on their faith. I recommend this book to others who enjoy this genre. Jay Dyess' narration was engaging and added to the enjoyment of the story. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.
