At twenty-five, he’s the middle of three boys raised by a single father. He’s always been a jock, so managing a gym feels like his calling. If only being a big brother were as easy. When Colby stumbles on his younger brother trying on feminine clothing, Taylor is angry and embarrassed. Looking for a way to make amends, Colby seeks the help of a new gym member whose eyeshadow and shimmering lips capture his attention.
Milo Kennedy is recently single.
Having broken up with his boyfriend, he’s trying to reclaim the person he used to be. Ashamed that he let someone take so much away from him, he’s determined to find himself again. The last thing he needs is another gym-bro in his life, but Colby seems sincere in his mission to help his brother and Milo can’t make himself say no.
Being around Milo has Colby questioning if he’s actually straight… or if there are things he still has left to learn about his own identity. But even though he can’t stop thinking about Milo, he knows better than to make a move. His little brother needs someone like Milo and Colby doesn’t want to do anything to jeopardize their budding friendship.
But as Colby is exploring and embracing his sexuality, and Milo reclaiming the pieces of himself that he lost to a bad relationship, they discover they might need each other despite their reasons for hesitating. Will they learn that the best things in life are worth taking a risk for?
Breakfast at Bennett’s is a four book series consisting of The Virgin, The Jock, The Princess, and The Outcast. For maximum enjoyment, it is best to read the series in order.
EM Denning has more than twenty romance novels under her belt and has become an author you can rely on to bring you emotionally endearing, soft and fuzzy, stories. She is well known among her friends for her love of naps and sarcasm. She spends her free time reading as many romance novels as she can get her hands on.
I love this family and this series 🥰 I’m not sure what I was expecting bc of the title I thought Colby was gonna be a bigot or close minded or something but what he actually turned out to be the best big brother ever ❤️ He was so caring, supportive and considerate of what his brother was going through and was there for him every step of the way. I definitely understand why Milo severely swooned over Colby!! He was also the best boyfriend ever!! Just so sweet, open, attentive, protective and supportive of Milo and gave his love and affection so freely. Colby was just the greenest flag ever and such a great character 💚
Milo was so sweet and deserved so much more than his haggard ex bf and family! The way he opened up to and became so comfortable with Colby (even after what he went through his stupid egotistical ex) I’m glad he got everything he deserved with Colby and The Bennetts. I loved how he helped and supported Taylor with being who he was and that it also helped him do the same for himself. The way he noticed and understood that Colby looked out for everyone but himself and said no way bby that’s all gonna change now that you have me 🥹 I just loved these two and how they cared for and considered each other so much 🩷
EM Denning’s writing just makes these characters so believable and the family feels so real and comforting and I love reading about them. I’ll definitely keep recommending this series to anyone who’s looking for a warm, cozy low angst read with characters you can really relate to and root for ❤️
This is the second book in the series, following the middle Bennett brother Colby. You don't need to read the first book to follow along, but it does give some backstory.
Colby is a sweetheart who deeply loves his family and will go to any length to protect them. When he discovers a secret his younger brother is hiding, he just wants to show him that it's okay to be himself. Milo has just gotten out of a bad relationship and could use someone in his corner to love him completely. The two men fit perfectly and are a cute couple to follow.
While I adored the romance and fun side characters, I wanted more action, tension, drama, or excitement. It was a bit too fluffy for me and lacked substance, I needed something else to fill in the spaces. But if you're looking for a sweet and uncomplicated read, this is for you!
If I could highlight and share quotes from this book then everyone would get an early copy because I loved every single word of this amazing story! Seriously, I highlighted so many passages…lol!!
Colby discovers a secret that his younger brother, Taylor, has been hiding and being the big, protective brother that he is, he reaches out to a member at his gym who he believes can help him.
With Milo helping Taylor, he grows closer to Colby but is gun-shy of a new relationship because of hurts from his most recent break-up.
I absolutely adored how Colby was just so accepting of everything Milo…no matter what and I loved how his best friend told him to go for it and just be himself. (See slide two)
Milo’s best friend also told him to be himself, to not let others dictate who his is or what he does. This whole book was all based around that one phrase “Just Be Yourself” and it was such a beautiful and amazing thing…for Milo, for Colby, and even for Taylor.
One thing I adore about EM’s writing is that there is no third-act break-up. Colby and Milo talked things out, worked through insecurities together and were stronger for it.
I am most definitely excited now to get Taylor’s HEA and I have a few theories of what might happen but we’ll just have to wait together to find out!!
The Jock by E.M. Denning isn’t just a book, it’s an experience—one worthy of being fully immersed in. I couldn't let this book go. I’ve already read it twice as it pulls at me so much.
I loved book one of this series, but somehow E.M. Denning managed to elevate this series even more. This book is not only about romance. It’s about finding oneself and reclaiming oneself. The sheer depth the author pours into these characters really shined through.
Colby is exactly the representation I need more of in books. I love the recognition that a label isn’t needed to explain attraction. Too often we are placed in boxes. This author smashes that stereotype.
Milo…I can’t say enough here. Escaping a toxic relationship, reclaiming the past, and most of all, recognizing that sometimes the past isn’t what you want—it’s about the future. It takes courage and E.M. Denning knows how to pull her characters through this minefield that could have been so easily pushed away by another.
Aside from the major emotional themes of this book, it has all the chemistry between the characters. E.M. Denning knows how to write some scorching hot scenes, and they certainly are in this book! As are the perfect moments of build up between Milo and Cody, the love shining through.
This is the type of book that heals. It would almost be too easy to be jealous of the Bennett Family and the way they support each other, but instead it’s reassuring. It has become one of my favorite books by this author and I won’t be putting it down anytime soon. I can’t wait for more!
5 stars for an emotionally complex, chemically explosive, and captivating story!
I'm loving the way the Bennett brothers embrace new experiences and just roll with them... Colby's story is a low-angst bi-awakening with such sweet intentions! I love how the relationship ebbs and flows naturally and there is no third act crisis or break up - this story was a pleasure to read and a reminder that being yourself is the best way to be...
I can't wait to see how Taylor flourishes and who else falls victim to random plant parenting in the next book!
I loved the first book in the series, but this one was even better. Colby is such a boyfriend goal, I loved everything about him : the way he cares about his brothers, how accepting he was of Milo, how easy is was for him to fall for another man. Truly fully loved him ❤️ And Milo is such a sweetheart that needs to be protected at all coast. I was so happy for him, for the way he found his old self again. It was a beautiful love story ❤️
I'm absolutely loving this series. We met Colby, the middle child, in book one, and I was happy to get his story next. The fact that he shared his story with Milo was even better. They're so amazing together. Colby is the protector out of the 3 of his brothers even though he's the middle child. He's always been there when his older brother Jonah was being picked on or when his youngest brother Taylor needed someone after the loss of their mother. He's the manager at a gym, and he loves what he does. When he accidently sees something he shouldn't regarding his little brother, he vows to not only tell Taylor that he has nothing to be ashamed of but to show him. And when he meets Milo at the gym and sees him in makeup, he asks for his help to show his brother the ropes and hopefully make a friend in Milo so Taylor has someone that understands. Colby has always identified as straight even though he's had a few low-key crushes on men, but he never felt the need to act on it until he met Milo and something awakened in him. But he doesn't want to risk Taylor and Milo's budding friendship by making a move on Milo. Milo has just gotten out of an emotionally abusive relationship with a man determined to chip away at every piece of happiness that Milo had that made him who he was. So when Milo finally kicks him to the curb he vows to heal himself and take back all the things that were taken away from him that he allowed and that in turn leads him to Colby's gym and he finds himself shocked by Colby and the way he cares so deeply for the people he loves and the fact that he came to Milo to help his brother feel like he belonged. He's hesitant when he realizes that he likes Colby because he still has hang-ups from his ex and doesn't want to be hurt again. But he finds he doesn't have to worry because with every day he and Colby grow closer he sees that Colby is nothing like his ex and instead encourages Milo to be everything he can be and lights him up instead of stealing his shine. These two were so perfect for each other. Colby really was such a dang sweetheart, and the way he was with Taylor every step of the way in his journey of self-discovery was beautiful. These two were hot and sensual and fell so damn hard. I really didn't want to stop reading about them. But I also absolutely love Nash in this book as he was a really good friend to Colby, and I'm super excited to read his book next with his two men! I can't wait to see what else this series has in store.
I loved Taylor so much in this and I can't wait for his book which is the next one. I was happy that he was in this a lot as well. I bought the entire series because of Taylor's book.
Colby is the middle Bennett brother and he's trying his best to make up for walking in on Taylor. Taylor is embarrassed and upset that Colby walked in catching him when he didn't want anyone to know about himself wanting to do the make-up and fem things. So Colby wants to do anything to make Taylor happy because that's all he wants is for his brother to be happy.
Milo is getting out of a relationship where his ex tore him down chipping everything away that he loved until there was nothing left of who he was. Milo liked wearing make-up and wearing under clothes that was more sexy and fem. The ex hated it with a passion and especially Milo doing drag. So Milo had given all that up. Now that he's ditched the ex he wants to find who he was again.
Colby and Milo meet the day that Milo goes to the gym where Colby works. Milo is wearing make up the first day and Colby comes up with the idea that Milo can help Taylor out. I enjoyed the Taylor and Milo time. I loved Colby going to the drag shows and the wow he had for them. Loved it when he took Taylor there because he wanted his brother to be happy. I LOVED LOVED LOVED when Milo got back up on stage as (Sue, I think that was his new name.) He wanted a fresh start and a fresh name. I wanted more of Sue up there so much.
Okay so I was annoyed by Milo's best friend because he didn't even give Colby a chance when he heard that he was a 'gymbro' at first. He should have thought more that Colby might not be like the ex was. Milo saw that after how wowed and supportive Colby was not only towards him, but to Taylor.
I can't wait for Taylor's book next when we get Nash and Damon as well. Love me some poly and throple going on. Loved how Nash was there for Taylor, but was kind of annoyed at how Colby acted. I know he had to learn that he can't be always there even if he could have been, but him being annoyed because of what happened just didn't sit well with me.
This series is so amazing and I love the world EM has created! The characters themselves are so lovely, and the place setting is fantastic. I love the concept of the family running and owning their family's diner, and I adore how close Colby, Jonah, Taylor, and Ethan are. It's so beautiful how accepting they are of each other and it really shows throughout the story how much they genuinely care for one another.
I adored Colby, he's such a sweetheart who tries his best to care for his brothers and support them in whichever capacity he can. When he learns about Taylor liking makeup he immediately does what he can to help make his brother comfortable in his own skin, and to let him know that he accepts him as is. I also really liked how kind and caring Colby was towards Milo. Even when Milo had a hard time trusting Colby due to his ex, Colby was patient and supportive anyways.
Milo's character was fabulous! I really enjoyed how his character had different layers. He loves makeup and wearing clothes that makes him feel pretty, and throughout the course of the story discovered that he loves helping others feel pretty too. I liked how his character grows and goes on his own self discovery journey, it was really beautiful reading about his character discovering himself again. It was truly beautiful!
The pacing was fantastic, things flowed so smoothly!! Colby and Milo's relationship slowly developed overtime, which I enjoyed. Overall a really fantastic book and I'm so excited to read Taylor's story!!
The Jock brings us Colby, the protector of the brothers, and oh man, how I love thee and hurt for thee. It is so much a part of his identity that it’s hard when he learns he needs to let go a bit. His love for his younger brother was stunning! I adore him for bringing Milo into his life, and for realizing that his happiness also matters.
A Milo. What a wonderful guy. And lord, if he doesn’t tug at your heartstrings. Trying to piece himself back together after a relationship that attempted to destroy who he is. But I loved that the author didn’t just expect him to go back to who he was before, but rather who he is now. He rediscovers his beautiful personality and the things he loves, but they reflect the changes of time and experiences.
Together they nurture each other and make each other stronger, and happier.
Such a lovely story, and I can’t wait for the youngest, Taylor to shine even brighter than he did in this story. It’s time for the baby to grow into his own!
I love EM Denning books. They feel like a hug. I won’t lie; they are my go-to when I need low-angst or a sure-fire feel-good read. The Jock delivers on all of that and more.
Colby (the titular jock) just wants to take care of everyone: his younger brother, his older brother, his dad, his clients, his best friend … so when he makes a mistake and walks in on his younger brother trying something new, Colby desperately wants to fix it. Happily, he meets a new member at his gym, Milo, who just might be able to help his brother. But as Colby and Milo become friends, Colby realizes his feelings go beyond friendship — and he might not be as straight as he thought. But Milo is wary after ending a relationship with a man who wouldn’t accept him for who he is. Can he trust Colby and his newly awakened feelings to let him be the man he is — with makeup, heels, and more?
I loved this story; everyone was treated respectfully and called on their shit, and it was a joy to behold. Boundaries were drawn and respected! Milo slowly reclaimed himself, and Colby was there to love him for it, as Colby also learned to put himself first sometimes. They were sweet, and sexy, and perfect. Major swoony sighs on this one. Definitely recommend.
This is the second book in the Breakfast at Bennett’s series and is best enjoyed when the books are read in order. It is a bisexual awakening, contemporary, new adult romance featuring a drag queen regaining her glam, and a gym bro finding attraction is not always a straight path. I had the audiobook version, and loved Kirt Graves’ narration of all the characters in the Bennett series. We meet a lot of side characters, as this small town clan of diner folk have collected a strong found family. I liked how Milo sounded a little softer compared with both excitable Taylor and strong Colby. The story has a very strong focus on Milo and Colby, with Taylor’s femme dabbling a close second. The love story is as tentative as necessary to help the audience accept both Colby’s awakening to same-sex attraction, and Milo’s release of his fear about being controlled by another emotional abuser.
Colby and Milo were so so sweet together. Both came with their issues, so the level of sweet wasn’t over the top.
Colby was constantly being called on for playing the hero, which sounds great, but was an area that he wasn’t appreciated for. He needed to step back, let his brothers and friends come to things in their own time in their own way, and be there for them when they were ready.
Milo, just getting out of a relationship that broke him down bit by bit, spent much of the book building himself back up. Not so that he was the him of his former days, but so that he was rebuilt to be a better version of himself. Some things he changed entirely, some things he wanted to do differently. Either way, his ex boyfriend was a tool, upset by Milo’s confidence, he tore Milo down until he was no longer himself.
Colby loved and supported Milo where he was at at the given moment, and never tried to change him, he acknowledged when he was being a jerk, or when he overstepped boundaries, and tried to clue Milo into his thought process.
While they both kind of jumped into this relationship quickly, I think they took the time to follow things organically, and it worked well for them.
An even better green flag read!! I didn’t think that I would like the jock of the family but Colby is the most adorable and well-meaning himbo ever and I really, really liked him and Milo’s romance. His sweet little bi-awakening was so refreshing too, he didn’t freak out or act like a jerk, just took it in stride and was so willing to be open. From “straight” guy to willing (and wanting!!) to bottom, more of that please!!!
It was nice when Milo got to take care of him for a change, too, since Colby put himself into the protector and caregiver role so much and wasn’t used to putting himself first. Plus Milo’s comeback to self and his drag subplot was great!! The whole story was good, I really enjoyed listening to Kirt Graves narrate it too.
The only thing that bothered me a little bit was just how much Milo compared Colby to his ex; it was a major theme and I understood its place, the story wouldn’t have been the same without it, don’t get me wrong. But even at the very end the comparisons were still being made and it felt a bit dead horse at that point. Colby was more than patient about it.
I had given up reading EM Denning but this series has brought me back so I’m glad to have given her another chance. Colby is such a sweet golden retriever of a person and he always seemed to know what the most supportive thing was to say. I loved his support for his brother and how he showed it. I loved how he was exactly the type of person in personality that Milo needed. My one complaint is that I felt bringing up the evil ex lingered on a little too long. I hated how much happiness he stole from Milo. But the book is only around 200 pages so he logistically he couldn’t linger too much longer at least. :)
And I can’t help notice there are 3 brothers but 4 books planned. Dare I hope for Ethan to get a book?? Probably not. lol
I do appreciate a bi-awakening book where the people around the newly out bisexual are just "so didn't realise?". This is one of those.
The family and found family aspects of this series are even sweeter here. The 3 Bennett books, their dad, and the friends they've brought into the fold. And then Milo rediscovering his drag-centred support network after getting out of an emotionally abusive relationship. So heart warming!
In this, you'll find: ✨️MM contemporary romance ✨️Crossfit gym manager realising he's bisexual ✨️Gay former drag queen ✨️An abusive cheating ex ✨️Stress around femme/glam expression ✨️Family + found family ✨️A HEA (without marriage or kids)
The characters in The Jock felt more real than those in The Virgin. The romance was sweet. There are, however, a few problems I had with it. 1) Colby and Milo don’t really face any problems together. The only conflict is Milo’s self-doubt. 2) The author is repetitive. It almost feels like she has to remind us of what just happened three pages ago. 3) I could not visualize the characters. The author occasionally describes clothing, but not the characters. Saying a character is “hot” is not enough. This is the difference between showing and telling.
The story was not a difficult read, but I don’t feel compelled to read the rest of the series. Especially since the next book is about Taylor, who I find to be more annoying than a dripping faucet.
Colby and Milo are undeniable! I love Milo's attitude and character as a whole. He's a fighter, trying to get through a bad break up and reclaim a part of himself that he thought was lost. Colby is not just a jock like everyone assumes. He has a big heart and will do anything for his family. Colby will also do anything for Milo and that includes helping him find the parts he lost. When Colby introduces his brother Taylor to Milo, it helps bring both boys out of their shell. It's the sweetest thing!! Colby and Milo's attraction to each can't be denied and the chemistry is fire!!
The second book of the Breakfast at Bennett's series is as good as the first. Once again we found important themes treated with EM's usual care and respect. Milo's insecurities were such well portraited that I wanted to hug him for the big part of the story. I loved Colby protectiveness, how he's always ready to jump in and look out for everyone, may that be his family and friends or strangers. What to expect: bi awakening, panties, make up and drag, found family, strangers to lovers. Can't wait to read the next one. I'm super curious about Taylor growth.
This was such a fantastic story and I couldn’t put it down! I absolutely loved Colby and Miles both! Poor Miles just stole my heart though with everything he went through. I’m so glad Colby was the sweetheart he was and accepted Miles just as he was! They both had the biggest hearts and were so adorable together! I love this series and the characters so much! Ethan is amazing! I absolutely loved this book and the author did an amazing job with the storyline! I can’t wait for Taylor’s story! Very highly recommend! This is my honest opinion of this complimentary copy of this book
This was a really nice follow up to book one, The Virgin. This time, Jonah's brother Colby is the Bennett to find love. Milo was trying to figure out who he was after ending a relationship that had stifled his personality and damaged his confidence. It was sweet to see big, strong, soft-hearted Colby fall all over himself around Milo. These two were so good together. Colby's patience and tenderness were a soothing balm to Milo's pain, and the attraction between the men was smoking hot. I enjoyed the relationship between the Bennett brothers and their dad, and I loved how they and their friends embraced Milo. I liked how both men's friends groups bonded. This was a sweet and sexy story, and I'm already looking forward to the next book in this series.
I adored this book. I enjoyed The Nerd, but this was on another level. The secondary characters were three dimensional (I'm excited to see Taylor get his much deserved HEA) and both Milo and Colby were WONDERFUL. They were both kind and generous and genuinely good human beings with big hearts. And I adored how Colby not only accepted but wholeheartedly supported Milo and every aspect of who he was. He was also a fantastic brother. I really loved this story.
I am really enjoying this series so far. I liked that the story overlaps a little with the first book. My heart ached for Milo. I'm so glad he met Colby when he did. Colby is so understanding, accepting, and such a protective brother. I liked his meet acute with Milo. Meeting Colby and then Taylor really boosted Milo's confidence. I enjoyed the drag queen scenes and seeing Colby's reaction. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
This is a modern queer romance, the second book in a series that should be read in order. Milo is getting out of a disastrous relationship so he changes gyms and meets Colby. Colby wants to be a supportive brother and so he asks Milo for advice which leads to spending time together, plus attraction. I loved these two characters! Milo goes through so much and Colby is a freaking awesome friend, then lover then boyfriend!
Colby and Milo! These pair are so cute I can't cope. Milo, still trying to re discover himself after leaving a controlling relationship, switches gyms and meets the lovely, lush and very straight Colby. There's just something about Milo that Colby can't look away from. An attraction. But he can't go there, can he?
I loved this one! Colby is an absolute sweetheart from start to finish. The way he loves and supports both Milo and his younger brother Taylor is top notch. Milo is also just fantastic! I loved his journey to rediscovering himself. He and Colby are perfect for each other. They lift one another up in all the best of ways!
Cute story with low angst. Colby, being raised in a queer family has no real issues accepting his attraction to Milo, and Milo’s hang ups on relationships are present but loosely held onto. This series seems to be just nice sweet stories, great, quick palet cleansers. And of course, narration is on point with Kirt Graves, a favorite of mine.
This is the second book in the Breakfast at Bennet's series and I am loving these brothers. All Colby wants to do is help his family, it's all he really knows to be, but he has to learn to do things just for himself, Milo helps with this. I can not wait to read about the last brother, Taylor.
