Jason is a teenage minotaur. He's having a hard time navigating the twists and turns of being so obviously different from those around him. But then there's Theo, his fully human little brother who has never looked at him differently. That all might change when the brothers are cornered in a corn maze after dark.
Jason's story and more unfold in Do I Terrify?, an exploration of the human condition through horror. One might find that some monsters are more human than they think. And vice versa.
A new collection of 13 short stories from Clinton W. Waters written for everyone who has felt kinship to the monsters from the books, shows, and movies they love. Perfect for fans of weird fiction, creature features, The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits.
Born and raised in Bowling Green, KY, Clinton W. Waters holds a degree in Creative Writing from W.K.U. Their work has been featured in university publications from W.K.U. and the University of Regensburg. They are the lead writer for Ionic Comics and their webcomic Variants.
I was kindly given a copy of this book by the author for my opinion. All my views are my own. I LOVE anthologies and Do I Terrfiy? is a great collection! While all stories would fall under the horror genre, there is a little something for each kind of fan. There's body horror (my personal favorite), alien abductions, and creature features. My favorites in the collection were Phantom Limb, White Witch, The Blood of the Lamb, and Love Song of the Parasite. Like I said, there is a smorgasbord of spooky and there's never a repeat. Each story will give you something new. And come on, to close it off with a minotar in a maze? So smart. I think this book will be great for all kinds of horror fans. Even people who are looking to dip their toes into the genre as well.
I just finished Do I Terrify and I absolutely love it!
Clinton Waters is doing some beautiful things here, ESPECIALLY turning on its head this old idea of the rural South as somehow inherently grotesque. They use these stories as social critiques and the rurality is both a context AND allows for the positive (and negative) values of the characters shine through.
It's smart and it's spooky!
I love how non-traditional the spook is too. Just weird and brilliant.
Young adult readers will also eat this up..and adult readers. And smart kids who sneak and read adult books. Everyone. Everyone will love this.
"Do I Terrify?" is a brilliantly sick collection of short stories. Body horror elements are peppered throughout, surfacing with skin-tingling dread in many of these tales; the magic, though, is accentuated by a rural atmosphere that colors many of Waters' pieces with warmth and personality.
Waters is also a master of trope subversion- I've never read such a lovely one-sided romance (?) between a parasite and a host. I ADORED the medley of abduction and escapism- a unique exploration of this idea.
The glints of queer love, especially in White Witch, was the icing on the cake. There's a gothic beauty in this collection that kept me entranced.
A nearly perfect spooky collection.
