I appreciate this informative and well-written book that focuses on the steps we can take to improve our health and quality of life. Most books of this genre focuses on our diets, but Dr. Batiste, a cardiologist, focuses on a combination of things that can contribute to poor health. He uses SELFISH as an acronym for the things we should be incorporating into our daily lives, such as better sleep, exercise, spirituality and humor. "If you apply the selfish principles in this book, you can promote healing in your mind and body that will allow you to live a healthy life and a life of purpose."
The book captured my attention when Dr. Baptiste used analogies of superheroes like Batman and Spiderman, who gained motivation through the deaths of a loved one to become heroes. He compares them to health. "Crime fighting is synonymous with disease fighting, because most of the disease is akin to a preventable crime or an unnecessary tragedy." He says that diabetes, which took his father's life, is a mostly preventable disease.
He talks about stress, which he defines as an internal reaction to an external stimuli. He focuses on the outward cause of sickness such as heart attacks rather than just diet. Some of those causes are broken heart symptoms, stress, lack of sleep, lack of intimate relationships, and lack of exercise.
One important question he asked was: when was the last time you laughed?
I learned about this book through Dr. Batiste's YouTube interview with Chef A.J. and I am grateful to both of them. This book has given me a lot to think about in regards to my quality of life.
Content is good, there are just quite a few grammatical errors and weirdness in the structure of the book itself that makes it a less than great read for me.
