Kindle and Audiobook I knew many of the stories included in this book because I have completed Kristi’s three video Bible studies and at least two of her audio studies as well as listening to her teaching online and reading Rediscovering Israel. Being familiar with many of the stories did not diminish my takeaways or how blessed I was as I read and listened. Perhaps it increased it all. This is a feast, indeed, and it should be savored.
Robin’s Ratings 5🌟 = Out of this world. Amazing. Unforgettable. A personal favorite. 4🌟 = Loved it. Will recommend to others. 3🌟 = Liked it. Glad I read it. 2🌟 = The book was okay, but I’ve enjoyed others so much more. 1🌟 = I didn’t like it and can’t recommend it.
“Feasting On God’s Word.” is truly a feast! Kristi McLelland has given us such a gift through her study of the Bible through a Middle Eastern lens. As someone who has studied scripture since a teen, I realize how much I’ve missed & misinterpreted by not applying the culture & context that scripture is written in. This is a book I will continue to learn from and recommend over & over.
I’d probably give it 3.5 stars!! I like how the author brings cultural and historical context into scriptures I’ve read so many times! New information to ponder on & consider
It’s a pleasure to learn from a woman who is a college professor and who also went to seminary. I value the insights a woman can bring to the scriptures. Miss McLellan travels often to the holy land, making her able to teach scripture from a unique perspective. Here is one of my favorite quotes: “we have agency in our suffering. We get to choose how we live in and through the hard times. What would it look like for us to counter life‘s difficulties with defiant joy?“ Page 126.
Kristi writes just as she speaks, she is so knowledgeable on the Bible and shows how each story teaches you something new about God. I learned so much from this book and enjoyed sharing with my bible study group!
As the title encourages, I devoured this book! I fell in love with Jesus more and more at the end of each chapter. Create space for the living God and He will fill it 🤍
My bucket list contains going to the land of Israel. Kristi would be a great person to go with. I had my Bible out taking notes as she touched on some of her favorite passages of Scripture giving you the Jewish or Middle Eastern viewpoint rather than the Western mindset that inhabits my mind. The emphasis in the book is that we should approach the Bible with the question, what does this teach me about God, not so much what does this teach me about me. I think that is spot on. Her thoughts really did bring clarity to the scripture. My only beef is that I wish there was more in each chapter, the rest of the story if you will. There is an interview with our author in the back and pictures that frame the setting for each chapter. I will have to go back and read her other books as well since this is her latest one.
I have learned so many pearls strung throughout scriptures in this book. Kristi writes in an easy to read fashion while giving great information. I learned a lot about Jewish customs, which made some scriptures mean so much more because I never knew. The prodigal's dad ran to meet him. Did you know that it was custom for the village to run to meet the prodigal and throw and break jars and such? The pools of Siloam and Bethesda are big as football fields and even bigger? This is a book I will read again to refresh my memory.
Kristi McLelland is one of my favorite Bible teachers, and her studies never fail to inspire me. She speaks Truth with clarity and brings historical context that is often unfamiliar to Western audiences. Her insights are both uplifting and profoundly enriching. One of the highlights for me was Chapter 12, The Good Shepherd and the Gate—a powerful and moving section that resonated deeply.
Kristi McLelland brings Israel right into my hands making the Bible seem so crystal clear and simple. Realistic references, beautiful stories and personal insight. I’ve watched & listened to her Bible studies, read her books but I could do any of them easily again and again. Getting to know the Living God never gets old!
I wanted to love this book, and there were some good insights, but it was very repetitive and felt a little disjointed. It felt okay the first couple of chapters but then felt like a slog to get through because of the repeated words and phrases. I feel like she is probably a great teacher in person, but as a writer it was just not there. I hate giving bad reviews, but this was hard to finish.
The author is a Bible scholar and she brings her deep insight down to application. Thank you Kristi for sharing your knowledge to help those of us without a degree in biblical studies to know God better.
McLelland is a favorite of mine. She makes God so real and accessible. Favorite line: “we don’t have to frat going down because our stories don’t end there”.
Amazing book! As she does, Kristi brings insight and clarity into Biblical stories from the 1st century perspective to show us deeper meaning and context. I learn so much from her work.
I love her books and this one did not disappoint. I could read this one again and again. A powerful look at scripture through an Eastern lens - jumping off the pages in brand new ways.
The context and cultural importance she gives about various passages of Scripture were all very interesting and insightful. It gave new light to familiar passages.
This is one of the best reads for anyone hoping to understand the Bible from its original point of view. You don't have to be some kind of formal scholar to pick up what Ms. McLelland is putting down. It's engaging and accessible. ...as the Bible should be!
