From my emergency patient to my fake boyfriend. This bad boy protector is about to find out he’s going to be a daddy. The hottest man I’ve ever laid eyes on is my ER patient. Sandy blonde hair ruffled. Bumps and bruises all over his perfectly chiseled face. His hazel eyes undressing me as I stitch him up. He asks me to provide him with extra PT care on the side, and I can’t say no. The money he offered doesn’t hurt. This girl’s got medical school bills to pay and a sick niece to support. When the wrong guy dies on my operating table, Mr. Big Bad & Bruised-up insists I stay with him.Suddenly really bad people are after me and I’m in a fake relationship with an overprotective alpha-hunk.Chemistry and close quarters means only one thing. Now this positive pregnancy test is screaming at me to get out. I doubt this bad boy big shot is ready to be a daddy.
There were some nice things about this book, but some parts were just boring and I had a hard time trying not to skim it. In total, I felt like this read did nothing for me. It was pretty unremarkable and had nothing to make me want to read more. I’m giving it 3-stars because it has to be a pretty bad book for me to give anything below that. The main characters were somewhat interesting, but I felt like we barely reach below the surface with them. There was so much more that could have been explored. We only got glimpses of their backstories and their family connections. Honestly, it had so much potential, but it didn’t deliver. We had almost no side characters and everything was focused on the couple. That’s not a bad thing sometimes, but on this case it didn’t feel realistic or that interesting. My first book by Emma Blake was not a hit but not totally a miss. I found this book while randomly browsing one of my book groups and thought I could give it a try. The idea behind the story and its characters was good, what was lacking was the development. It felt mostly shallow and forgettable. I’m hoping at some point I can come back to this author and try some of her other works, just not right now.
I received this book as an ARC and all opinions are my own. This is a great read. It has strong main male and female characters. They both have traumatic pasts to overcome and they help each other along the way. What I truly loved about this book is that they rescued each other. I highly recommend this book.
I read this after reading and reviewing the first one, hoping that the further into the series we got, the better it would be, but I'm disappointed. I've previously read boxed sets by Emma Blake where the stories got progressively better, and I was hoping it would be the same trend for this story, but alas it was not.
Similar to the first book in the series, the initial information about this story sounded great; ex-military alpha brother, forced proximity, bad boy with a good heart, and protector. When written well, all of it ticks lots of romance novel boxes for me. But, again, it didn't land.
Reading the initial bullet-point list, I was excited for this story but reading the full synopsis, it delivers what it says on the tin and I maybe wouldn't have bothered. The initial writing style of the first book (mainly the characters speaking out loud to themselves) didn't carry over to this story, which was a relief. But, similar to the first book, it's very showing rather than telling. There's nothing wrong with her writing or readability; it's a very comfortable, easy read.
However...
This story has so many cliches and I don't think they have been done well. There's lots about it that could have been explored well, some themes that could have been a different book altogether. The characters didn't act according to their motives, and there was no escalation of danger or build-up of fear or suspense. I didn't feel any chemistry between the characters, and other secondary characters and relationships were added without exploration.
There are characters that are meant to be part of the wider series (for example, the other brothers) and the main couple from the previous book, but they didn't make an appearance which damaged the series as a whole; there's no excitement for further stories, and if you were really into the previous couple, you don't get to see how they're doing either.
Similar to the first book, there was so much scope for the themes and ideas in this story to be explored well. Characters and relationships had a 500-page novel's worth of potential, and the external conflict could have been insane. The internal conflicts chosen could have carried a novel all on their own too. But so much is introduced and then never explored or even mentioned again. It's almost like a character sheet or scene idea has been written down, and the details have been added because the author didn't want to let them go, rather than realising they didn't necessarily have a space in this story.
I also think that the military backgrounds are not handled well; their mannerisms, motives, approaches to danger, the lack of teamwork, and talking about brotherhood without actually exploring that in the character relationships. Again, there were lots of words but not a lot happening in this story. It's hard to explain much further than that without doing a full breakdown review with spoilers, so I won't go into anything else here.
I reviewed using the CAWPILE system and scored 5, 6, 5, 3, 4, 5, 4 with an overall rating of 4.57; the equivalent of 2 or 2.5 stars. I received a free copy of this book through Book Funnel.
I received a free copy of this book as an ARC via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. This was the first book by this author I have read. As the 2nd book about the Shaw brothers, it follows Under His Protection which I have not read so there were times in this story that I felt like I was missing some important detail. But it caught my attention right away with the two main characters and I was surprised by that knowing it was the second book. We start in a busy ED where Clara, our female lead and surgical resident, is stitching up Luke after something happens with him, his brothers, and the Crimson Cobras. When one of the Cobras passes away under her care, Clara becomes a target. Luke witnesses this and steps up to protect Clara. She only agrees to help him with his recovery at first but when an attempt is made on her life and she has nowhere to go, she agrees to move in with him for protection. There is a lot of action throughout the storyline and I love the playful chemistry between the two. Both have triggers that I wish we could have explored deeper but as the plot builds, they realize their feelings for one another. Even though people from the previous book are mentioned, it is still standalone. The final chapter is sweet, and the epilogue was a snapshot of a year to a year and half later that showed their HEA as a family.
This is the 2nd book about the Shaw brothers and follows on from Under His Protection. This book starts right in the middle of a busy ED where Clara, a surgical resident, is busy stitching up Luke from an altercation between him, his brothers and the Crimson Cobras. Clara becomes a target when one of them dies while she was helping to save him. Luke vows to protect Clara and moves her in with him and here starts the romance.
This is a great book and I had trouble putting it down. The characters are well written and the author deals with topics such as abuse, alcoholism, PTSD and murder of a friend.
There is lots of action, suspense and spicey scenes. I love the chemistry between the leads and the humour where they just seem to bounce off each other. I like how Luke finally figures out his emotions to deal with the PTSD and how Clara's fiesty character and altermation is a trigger for this.
I would like to have seen how Luke further deals with his issue and it mentions that Clara has a medical condition but these are never fully explained. Overall this was a great book and well worth the read even if you have never read this authors work before. Look forward to if the author does a book about the third brother
Rating 3.5 stars. Received as an ARC and leaving my honest review voluntarily. Note to sensitive readers, there is mention of abuse/neglect (of both MMC & FMC growing up) but nothing too descriptive and the MMC is suffering from PTSD and alcohol addiction which he finally seeks therapy for at the end (kudos to authors who point out the importance of seeking professional help). This was an okay read that would have been so much better if the plot was tighter and didn't leave me still questioning things at the end of it all. The medical aspect was interesting but do not expect it to delve too deeply nor expect to read about reality in the ER but I thought it was good enough to set the tone. There is suspense and danger thrown in but this is where I found it confusing and a lot of plot holes with the whole Cobra gang issue. And of course steamy times between Luke and Clara, and although both had an instant attraction to each other, I appreciated that they waited which was a nice slow burn. The ending was sweet and touching and the epilogue was a snapshot of probably 1.5-years later that showed their HEA as a family.

When Dr. Clara Stewart met Luke Shaw, he was a stabbing victim bought to her ER after what seemed to be a gang fight in her town. I thought it was going to be a motorcycle club or mafia story. Those aren't my favorite types of books but it wasn't the case in "Under His Guard." The story of Luke and Clara is actually book 2 in a series that I'm not sure Ms. Blake has named. The first book is "Under His Protection." Luke is ex-military and Clara is a cardiac surgical resident that has a patient die on the table that was involved in the same incident as Luke. The gang the dead man was in, the Crimson Cobras, are involved in serious crimes. His crazy brother threatens the lives of Clara, the other doctors, and Luke. Luke and Clara have an instant kind of love at first. But once the rose colored glasses come off, you see Luke's PTSD from his years in combat and the alcoholism that came from coping. Clara drives herself to be perfect but she forgets about her own happiness a lot. But I love the fact that Clara has a backbone!!! I really enjoyed this book. Even though people from the previous book are mentioned, it is still a standalone. I anxiously await the next book.
This was my first book by this author & i was pleasantly surprised by how good this book was.this book caught my attention from the very first page & kept it throughout the whole book. I would have finished it in one day, but work & life kept interfering.
The book starts out with Dr. Clara Stewart treating Luke in the emergency room. When Clara assists in a surgery that has a fatal outcome, she is threatened by man's friends. Luke knows just how dangerous this group is & so he hires Clara to help him with his PT as an excuse to keep her close & protect her. Clara & Luke's relationship evolves, but there are some revelations that cause problems for Clara and Luke & it places both of them in extreme danger.
I really liked this book & it has made me want to go back and check out the other books in this series & by this author. This book had a little bit of everything, lots of action & suspense, plenty of danger, tons of spice, humorous dialogue, & tons of chemistry that leaps off the page. If this is a new to you author, just give this book a chance & you might find yourself pleasantly surprised at how good this book is, I know I was! You won't be disappointed.
I was not expecting Luke's double issues or Clara's. I felt like I was coming into a continuation story from the first chapter when Luke was in the ER with Clara. Something happened with the Costa's that caused Luke to end up in the ER.
I thought this was going to be a flirty type romance with the H providing protection for the h. I started out liking the mc's, and then Clara rapidly became irritating. Why she couldn't recognize the situation was different and dangerous was beyond me.
The book was ok. Some parts I struggled through. I honestly didn't get any sense of chemistry between Clara and Luke. He seemed desperate and unwilling to deal with his problems. Clara seemed kind of cold and standoffish.
I enjoy romantic suspense books. This book didn't hit me with much romance or suspense. You should definitely read this book and judge for yourself.
I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy of this book received via Booksprout.
Clara is working the night shift in the ER. It has been a quiet night until everything goes sideways. They have two groups of people with injuries. By the end of the shift Clara has been threatened with her life. Clara is working on Luke. Once Luke is done getting stitched up he is now concerned about the threat to Clara. Luke wants to help. Clara doesn’t believe anything will come of the threat. Luke and Clara have some chemistry and a touch creates electricity, a zing. This story has strong, characters which sometimes brings out some heated debates. There is incredible passion, as well as soft, sweet togetherness and ultimately love. It’s filled with life and death situations, medical and family drama, suspense. It has everything you would want in a story and the characters are dynamite! It’s an amazing read and I loved it!.

Dr. Clara Stewart met Luke Shaw when she was stitching up his knife wound in the emergency room of the hospital she worked at. He and his brothers had a run in with the Crimson Cobras. One was also was in the hospital and required emergency surgery. Clara was one of the surgeon's who operated on him. When the gang member died on the operating table she became a target of the Cobras. Luke, already smitten with her decided he would be her protector. Clara being very independent decided that he wouldn't.
Ms. Blake did a great job with this story. It grabs you right from the beginning. The characters of Clara and Luke are very well developed. You can especially feel Clara's pull from being independent and not relying on anyone to having someone who wants to take care of her 24/7.

I found this book to both entertaining and captivating. Luke and Clara are two fascinating characters. Both have demons or painful pasts that haunt them and drive them forward. Clara’s drive her ambition, her need to be a surgeon. She has dedicated her life to that pursuit, leaving little time for a personal life. She certainly isn’t looking for love. Neither is Luke. He is haunted by events in his military past and is dealing with PTSD, though he tries to deny and hide it. He is a protector at heart, which is why he comes to Clara’s aid when she is threatened by members of a dangerous gang.
I loved the banter, his shameless flirting, and even her confused and slightly panicked retreats. They have a fiery chemistry that eventually turns into a roaring blaze. Both backtrack a bit, confused about their feelings, feelings that go deeper than they thought and are rather scary. There is a whole lot of tangled emotions to deal with as the danger from the gang escalates, his PTSD worsens and her stress levels at work rise. Do they want a chance to build a future together? Will they get it?
3.5 stars This was my first introduction to this author, and I grabbed it, wanting a suspense romance read. This felt like a storyline continuation, and sure enough, Under his Protection came first, and I probably should have read that before this one.
Clara and Luke definitely have an insta-love connection, but it isn't sustainable, based on their individual back stories. Once that dissipated a bit, I found the story a bit harder to finish. His PTSD and her inability to see the dangers in her situation bothered me a bit. Their chemistry was okay, but I found myself wanting a bit more - more in the couple's chemistry, and more drama/suspense.
I did enjoy my time in these pages, but need to go back and read the first one, to fill in the gaps. I was fortunate to receive a complimentary copy of this read (thank you) and voluntarily leave my review.
It’s all there- action, suspense, romance, redemption! Doctor Clara Stewart is a Surgical Resident. She is a wonderful compassionate lady. Her focus is on her career and has been for a very long time, she hasn’t even taken time to date. While working in the ED, Clara is about to meet a man who is… special! Luke Shaw has been in a fight with the Crimson Cobra criminal gang and Clara is there to sew up his stab wound. Luke’s a big flirt and they seem attracted to each other. Luke wants to get to know Clara better but when Clara is threatened by a gang member Luke comes to her rescue. Luke is a wonderful guy though a deeply troubled character. They make a lovely match. I love this intense drama. The characters are very complicated, but the story is worth the tension. Linda
Luke and Clara have an unconditional relationship. She is a surgical resident who stitches up a wound on Luke . He and his brothers have an altercation with a dangerous group of men. This is how they come together. Their lives are in danger because of these people. They have to navigate through all the perils they encounter. Plus they have to come to terms with their own reality and problems. It is a very action packed story that deals with abuse, alcoholism and PTSD. I enjoyed reading this book and loved meeting Clara and Luke through the excellent writing of the author. She made these characters realistic.

Claire sees all kinds of things while working at the hospital / ER as a resident. Even when they do all they can, losing a patient is never easy. Unfortunately, this time it has put her life in danger.
Luke is ex-military and does a bit more than owns his own PR firm. An altercation with the Crimson Cobra lands him in the hospital, where he is taken by the resident working on him.
This was a good story that keeps you on the edge of your seat as the danger and suspense heats up as Claire's life is threatened and Luke is determined to help. Claire and Luke have an electric chemistry that ignites with each touch.

I absolutely love these Shaw boys (by blood or loyalty). I loved that this picks up right from Dom's book. Love the expression of past traumas, difficult trust issues, the job stuff, everything. I loved that she knows Luke isn't perfect and calls him on his stuff. This story is amazing! Love interconnected standalones like this series. Loved Dom's story, love this one about Luke, & know the next is Cam...now fingers crossed for Jay & Anthony stories!!

They may not meet in the best of circumstances, but these two were destined to be together from the start. When threats come knocking on her door, Dr. Clara Stewart is forced to learn that the threat is very much real and her life is about to turn upside down. With her charming patient offering his help, she has to decide if she will take it and if she can keep her hands to herself.
Loved getting to see all the different sides of these two characters and how their story plays out.
Oh I adore Ms. Emma's books. This one is so good. I knew being the 2nd book in this series would be a treat and what a treat it was. Like is a doll. There is so much mystery. So much love and caring. Shocking scenes that make the book so good. I love cam. And the brothers. Oh before I close. The spicy scenes are really nice. Ha. Very spicy. Now we await the next brothers book ... IMPATIENTLY. I SO HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. THIS SERIES. THIS AUTHOR. SHE WILL BE YOUR FAVE TOO.

This book was not one of my favorite Emma Blake stories. I just did not feel the chemistry between the MCs. There were a lot of questions left unanswered, like I was supposed to know the answers already. The Cobra gang threatens Clara and Luke takes it upon himself to become her protector. There was a slow burn until their HEA. Glad to see the MMC get help for his alcoholism and PTSD.

I look forward to reading more from the author.
