“Editing isn’t only for books and television, Mara. Tell your own story as you want it told.”
This short horror novella is a quick read about a young woman who starts working as a production assistant on the night shift of a reality TV show that follows new residents of haunted houses. Her job basically consists of scaring the new tenants, but things start to take a strange turn when she meets another colleague who begins to help her.
The premise of the story isn’t bad, but the story itself didn’t do much for me. I found Mara to be somewhat flat, and the story itself was rather meh. The revelation wasn’t anything special either, but the story wasn’t bad for passing a couple of hours.
Mara, the late-20's loser of her extended family ("I hear she's got a plan to make a plan for her life," jokes one relative) takes a summer job on the TV show her model-cousin hosts, a "reality" series focusing on people moving into old houses that may be -- but mostly aren't really -- haunted. Making them seem spooky is most of Mara's work. But then some unusual, and unplanned, events begin to occur ...It's a good thing this is a novella, because while it was enjoyable, it was also a bit slight. I liked Mara decently well, drifting though she is. And the haunt-y part of the story did start within a page after I grumpily thought, "Something had darned well better happen about now!"
