About the author

Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

This FCBD title is more of a teaser for year 2 of image comics smash hit launch. I've been itching to get into these some time soon. Especially with Daniel Warren Johnson involved somewhat. Didn't work as a great gateway for me, but I'm still intrigued and love the writing tone and visual style they are going for

FCBD 2024

This gives a snippet from Transformers, Void Rivals and GI Joe. All 3 were great. So dope seeing these characters all in the same universe. Can’t wait to read all these trades.

Worth it for the Transformers story alone, though the Void Rivals and Duke features were solid as well. Transformers writer Daniel Warren Johnson works with artist Ryan Ottley to flesh out a short story around Megatron's whereabouts. It's a critical narrative beat for the ongoing series which does make me a little confused about it's inclusion in a FCBD issue (and reprinted in the upcoming Energon Universe one-shot special). It elaborates on Starscream's current standing with the Decepticons, and spells out some interesting developments for the ongoing series. Ottley does a bit of a DWJ impression on the artwork, but Ottley is more than capable of selling action sequences in a riveting manner. Definitely worth picking up if you're a fan of the current Transformers series from Skybound.

A three-stories-in-one issue, two Transformers and one G.I. Joe.

The first story ("Transformers") starts off essentially with the climactic battle between Megatron and Optimus Prime from the (first) movie, cutting off when Megatron is betrayed by Starscream to cut to a completely different scene. (Spoiler why.) It's an *okay* story, and the art is actually even MORE extreme than this Shortpacked! joke about detailing in Transformers. I don't know if I can take it seriously.

The second ("Void Rivals") is about a Skuxxoid and... I don't know what, since that's farther than I'm familiar with the series... frilled lizard alien. I actually had to look up both of those. Mostly intelligence-gathering/-trading, not a lot of story.

The third ("G.I. Joe") is about the Baroness getting... recruited? and some other subterfuge things. I'm not sure if I'm invested enough to find out what happens next, since I'm even less familiar with the Joes than with the Transformers.

I guess it's okay for free, but I don't know about beyond that. It's not really my bag of tea, I guess.

Las cabeceras principales ya han avanzado al punto de poder contar con un Especial como este que aborde algún punto clave o de interés de cada parcela creativa que en algún momento coincidirá. ¿Qué fue de Megatrón para no estar en el arranque del Transformers de Daniel Warren Johnson? ¿Cómo enlazará la trama de Void Rivals con la presencia Autobot más o menos presentada? ¿Y en cuanto a G.I. Joe, qué movimientos se darán en esta necesidad gubernamental de posicionarse ante la presencia alienígena y el potencial del Energon?

Aún queriendo ser un material de interés para el lector ya enfrascado en este universo comiquero, se sigue buscando que pueda ser una lectura puente a las mismas. Por lo que salvo la primera historieta con Megatrón, las restantes no llegan a un nivel de interés mucho mayor que el saber que todo este conjunto sigue avanzando con grandes vistas al futuro.

I can't believe Skybound gave this comic book away for 2024 Free Comic Book Day.

I had to buy mine at regular comic book price because I had no local comic book store near me. However, it was still worth it despite the fact that I could have had this book for free.

First, it had a Megatron story explaining how he lost the arm with the fusion cannon. Let me just say that an O.G. energy axe versus energy morningstar battle was involved.

Another story had a Hot Rod appearance. We might soon see the bot with the touch and the power.

The third had a surprising face turn from an O.G. Cobra.

This was a great comic. I would have scored it higher if I got the FCBD 2024 version. But it was still good enough to pay for it.

To Cap of Year One of the Energon Universe we get a Issue for the Free Comic Book Day 2024. This issue contains three short stories featuring the main series complining the Universe: Transformes, Void Rivals (which criss crosses with the Transformes hopefully soon as some Bots appear regularly) and GI Joe. It clearly uses these samples to bridge over into Year Two and gather intested in the other series. Not Bad but nothing special.

Though the Energon Universe Special #1 paves the road for future Transformers and G.I. Joe stories thanks to a roster of all-star creators it does not guarantee that it will be a success. This issue is not entirely new reader friendly, but that's all the more incentive for newcomers to explore the titles that have recently been collected to catch up on all the fun. I did enjoy the Transformers story the most out of the three stories presented in the issue.

I read void rivals first trade and have been excited to try the DWJ transformers. This was snippets of characters I’m not really familiar with. Don’t know squat about GI Joe so will probably stick to just the transformers series. The void rivals was fine, but reading time is limited and need to stick with what interests me most.

Why are Transformers and GIJoe in the same universe? The stories are all actually quite cool and make me want to read more. The human bit was interesting but i missed the wonder of transformers. A bit of nostalgia and cool art gets this a 4/5
