Rei Tōma (Japanese: 藤間 麗,Tōma Rei) has been drawing since childhood, but she only began drawing manga because of her graduation project in design school. When she drew a short-story manga, "Help me dentist" (ヘルプ me デンティスト), it attracted a publisher's attention and she made her debut right away. Her magnificent art style became popular, and after she debuted as a manga artist, she became known as an illustrator for novels and video game character designs.

Dawn of the Arcana is her first long-running manga series, and it has been a hit in Japan, selling over a million copies.

The threat of war looms over the nation, as Tenyou’s reforms don’t sit well with neighbouring countries that would rather their Ajin stay indentured than gain their rights. Preparations, however, look an awful lot like flirting.

This might be the best volume of this since the original plotline got wrapped up and it manages to do so while being very, very silly amidst the looming spectre of conflict. Or I was just in the right mood for this to kick up its heels for a bit and have at it.

Now that she’s back in the palace, Rangetsu is reckoning with her love of Tenyou and the fact that it’s pretty much impossible in the current state of society. They’ve done enough elucidation beforehand that they can mention it without hammering it and I appreciate the defter touch.

Which implies (and entails) a lot of longing and tortured glimpses, but generally brings back a cadre of previously seen characters and basically does goofy things with them between the quieter sections with Tenyou and Rangetsu.

Yes, Rangetsu’s back in her old uniform again and, as always, the art knows how to have a field day with its sumptuous illustrations (her turn to girlier clothes later on is even better and furries will be well served this volume). And it’s hard to say whether Sangetsu gets the most mileage from, ahem, doting on his sister or being incredibly gay (or at least flamboyantly bisexual).

Throw in the very horny for pretty much everything Kougai and lots of little moments between Tenyou and Rangetsu and you’ve got a volume that is leaning hard into its generally frisky nature. And, hey, that’s pretty okay.

There’s a little action, featuring a wonderfully mismatched duo, lots of heat, and it remembers to be about its ongoing plotlines now and then. The spectre of war looms large, including bringing back a character that raises a few hackles, but there are also palace intrigues to be indulged in.

It’s pretty soapy, all things considered, but if we take a volume to play around while setting up the pieces for later and that lets Tenyou and Rangetsu fit in a date at the same time? Have at it, I say. There’s aimless wandering and there then there’s playful asides on the way to something new. This is the second one.

This is essentially a fuzzier, thirstier companion to The Apothecary Diaries and, while it is not that series’ equal (few things truly are), it is a very, very enjoyable read in its own right. Especially if you want something in a similar vein with more overt sexy bits.

5 stars - I had a great time with some great characters and enjoyed the hint of the dark times possibly ahead. As a lull between sweeping stories it fills that space with a lot of tasty bits for the reader to savour.

This has to be one of my favorite volumes. I love the development in Rangetsu and Prince Tenyou's relationship. I love seeing more of Sogetsu. We also meet some new characters and have hints toward some impending action.

The less we see of the Dawn of the Arcana characters, the better for me. 😂 This book had some good Rangetsu & Sogetsu interactions, so I’m pleased.

I probably won’t continue with this series. I really enjoyed it at one point, but the plot just isn’t going anywhere in my opinion. And they just killed off one of my favorite characters in the most recent chapter (I’m still in shock, lol).

There's a new normal and new challenges on the horizon. Rangetsu is a military officer now but that doesn't mean she's immune to the whims of the royal family. So she gets to hang out with Princess Ririn (and her husband) and Prince Kogai (and Boku).

But she's still a girl so there are people who think she's beautiful (even if they think she's a dude). But I love how she and Sogetsu are super elite beast-servants of the imperial family, but instantly share one brain cell when they're together (much to Tenyou's detriment).

But war is coming and no one is going to be able to sit on the sidelines.

Sogetsu seems to be in remarkably good humor and rather laid back with his life at this point. Rangetsu seems slightly more aware and actively asks for opinions to enhance her own appearance. She also seems to be getting along better with pretty much everyone, though doesn't seem too pleased with Tenyou's brother. The date scene at the festival is cute, though how they're going to convince Kyoko to return to the palace is a mystery. Definitely can understand why Rangetsu is struggling so much with that decision and being near each other again.

Things seem to be moving along better than they did in volume 12.

There's an impending war and Ajin are still not as accepted even after they are given more rights. Rangetsu seems to be embracing more of her feminine side, especially when she goes on a date with Prince Tenyou. With the war coming, they need a past character to come back, and that creates some tension.

Volume 13 is a better volume than 12, which is nice because I've been debating dropping the series.

Honestly, with revenge plot over and done with, this series is turning into filler volumes for me….
All I care about is the romance between the girl and the prince, so she needs to overcome her insecurities about being with a human.

….i guess they would need to change societies mindset about the non-humans, but I think it needs to happen a little quicker. ٭(•﹏•)٭

Even though I'm slightly disappointed, I'm still giving three stars because of the art. It was gorgeous as always. We didn't get much that happened here and once it seemed like it would pick up, the volume ended. I'm still interested in the story and characters so I'll be waiting for the next one.

Mi piace come Kogai li stuzzica sempre e smuove le acque...senza di lui quei due non avrebbero fatto NIENTE!!!!

Speriamo che le cose si facciano un po' più intense però...sembra sempre non succedere mai quasi nulla...uff!

So short!

Unfortunately, not very much happened in this volume. Mostly just consists of setup for an upcoming arc. I was actually kind of disappointed...

Very sweet romance, if you’re a fan of Kamisama Kiss or fruits basket you’ll love this series! Be warned tho it’s addictive and many of the volumes (this one included) tend to end on a cliffhanger.

Aww, Rangetsu is trying to be more feminine now. Put the brother in his place about touching her. And a date with Tengou!

War! I hope they are both safe!
