Da napišem samo u jednoj rečenici kakve dojmove imam za ovu komediju, onda bi moje osobne liste najdražih djela govorile same za sebe. Sve što Novela od Stanca i Škrtac (ili Skup, ovisno o verziji) imaju u svojim sadržajima zajedno, Dundo Maroje nudi duplo više. Živopisne scene, ljude koji se bave svakodnevnim poslovima, slučajne prolaznike, pratnju, glamur, jednostavnost, sporedne priče. O kojoj god verziji da se radi (književna, kazališna, filmska, stripovska ili na malim ekranima), ne bi bilo na odmet, jer naslov obiluje zanimljivim razgovorima, lokacijama, likovima i detaljima. Držić nije ništa prepustio slučaju, već je višeslojno ocrtao i prikazao likove kao ljude koje i danas svatko može ugledati, sresti i upoznati (spol, dob, podrijetlo, stalež, osobine), a čitatelj ima priliku pratiti komunikaciji između posjetitelja i domaćih ljudi. Naravno, jezik je prilagođen u svakoj situaciji, tako da pretpostavimo da svatko svakoga može razumjeti (u filmovima smještenim u dalekoj povijesti svi govore istim jezikom), ali ne treba razbijati glavu time. Glavni cilj je nasmijati i zabaviti čitatelja/gledatelja, a u ovom slučaju bi to bila najblaža riječ. Zasigurno djelo koje bih ponio sa sobom na duže putovanje.
If I was to write just one word to describe impressions for this work, than my personal list of favorite works would speak for themselves. Everything that two previous works have (''Novela od Stanca'', ''Skup''), ''Dundo Maroje'' doubles it. Lively scenes, people with everyday jobs, accidental passengers, company, glamour, simplicity, side stories. No matter the version we're talking about (book, theater, movie, comic or small screens), it wouldn't be a waste, because the title is full of interesting conversations, locations, characters and details. Drzhich left nothing to chances, by giving and showing multilayered characters as a people that we can see, meet and get to know (sex, age, origin, class or personality) even today, and the reader gets the chance to observe the communication between the visitors and the locals. Of course, the language is adapted to each situation, so we presume that everyone can understand everyone (like in the historical movies where everyone speaks the same language)), but no one has to be bothered with it. The main purpose is to laugh and entertain the readers, and in this case that would be the last word to describe it. Definitely a work that I would brought with me on a long travel.
