Pride & Healing Division in the Modern Family is a heartfelt exploration into the intricate balance between celebrating one's identity (pride) and confronting ingrained biases (prejudice). Dr. Matt R. Salmon shares his experience growing up queer in a family and religion that condemned it.
Drawing upon professional expertise and unique life experiences, this book offers a fresh perspective on the challenges and opportunities that arise in families with LGBTQ+ members. The author channels these experiences into a powerful narrative, aiming to inspire change and prevent further harms inflicted by societal biases. It is a compelling read for parents, religious leaders, and individuals working to embrace their identity, as well as for those seeking to deepen their understanding of the complexities of acceptance and diversity.
Through a mix of personal narratives, psychological insights, and practical strategies, Pride & Prejudice guides readers through understanding prejudice, breaking it down, and paving a way toward healing division with empathy, open conversation, and unconditional love. It's more than an analysis of the modern family; it's a roadmap to fostering inclusive environments that celebrate the colorful spectrum of humanity.
This is a story that should be read or better yet, listened to, by every so-called religious parent, by teachers and others who interact or are called to aid those are nit accepted even through God made them the way they are.
One man's journey being raised Mormon by devout parents. The son of a conservative Congressman. He was given love by his family while trying to change him. They grew to accept him as his true self while never changing their religious beliefs. His father continued to oppose same sex marriage while eventually accepting his son.
The author became a doctor and counselor helping others. He has much insight into himself and his family. A book that makes me think while making me cry. The author is a better human being than I could ever be.
More people have been killed and harmed in so many ways by people who believe in a caring God. Live by Love thy neighbor as yourself. That includes your children.
Some books, I read with a highlighter and a colored pen to note in the margins.
Some books, I listen to, especially when I want to hear the author's voice.
My favorite books though, I do both. This is one of those books.
I pre-ordered this book, and when I picked it up to start last week, I wanted to hear it in his voice, so I downloaded the audio version as well. PERFECT choice. I devoured it in two afternoons.
As I listened to his words, I kept coming back to the physical copy and highlighting gems. He's a terrific writer, and his stories are engaging.
Matt's authenticity and conviction are palpable. The research included is relevant and comprehensive, but it is his lived experience that is most convincing. Matt has walked the walk of the challenge his is issuing to all of us. He has stood in the very difficult place of balancing boundary-setting for self-protection, and loving with integrity. If only we all carried this strength.
This is a book that should be read by every American.
I grew up in a conservative, semi-religious family as a closeted kid, constantly fearing the impact of coming out on my parents' reputation and our community. This fear of bringing shame was a significant challenge.
Dr. Salmon's story, set in an even more religious and public-facing family, showcases his unwavering courage to live authentically while staying true to his values. His journey is profoundly inspirational. One of the messages—that we must change ourselves rather than expecting the world to change—resonates deeply.
Reading helps me understand diverse life experiences, fostering empathy and understanding. This book is particularly valuable for those who share this interest or struggle with society's rapid changes. I've already bought a copy for my brother, hoping it helps his perspective.
I highly recommend this insightful and thought-provoking book.
A wonderful read gifted to me by Steve's aunt, who is Christian but not Mormon. She hadn't read it yet but plans to. She said it looked like a story similar to ours. Now that I've finished it, I can see why, in that the author had a Mormon upbringing. He includes one of the first Mama Dragons who had inspired and helped me along the way back when our transgender son first came out. Matt's story is heartbreaking, inspiring, and empowering. I can see myself recommending this to many people.
Amazing story. Offered a fresh perspective on acceptance of differing viewpoints that truly widened my world view. In a world that’s becoming increasingly more siloed, we all have much to learn from Dr. Salmon’s patience, understanding, and acceptance of his family and himself.
