The Protector Guild #2

Forging the Guild

Rate this book
Creatures from hell are breaching the human world like never before and it's up to me and the rest of The Guild to figure out why. Which means one thing: the world is screwed.

When Headmistress Alleva arrives on campus, my life at Headquarters is thrown upside down. After sightings of werewolves close to Guild boundaries have everyone up in arms, recruits are thrust into apprenticeships with prominent teams to help move along graduation rates and get them into the field as soon as possible.

While this sounds good at first, I'm starting to figure out that being a protector isn't what I always thought it would be. At all. Increased attacks, mixed with a creepy research lab that is anything but trustworthy, leaves me desperate for answers.

And if that doesn't sound difficult enough, the members of Team Six are making my life miserable and complicated. If the monsters don't destroy me, Atlas, Wade, Declan, and Eli just might finish the job first.

Kicking ass? Easy. Navigating my new role within The Academy and deciding who can be trusted? Damn near impossible.

Hi! I'm Gray. I'm best known for my series, The Protector Guild - an 8-book completed series filled with all things angst and chaotic hijinks. I'm currently working on my second series, Order of Reapers, which is the follow up to The Protector Guild. At the moment, there are 10 books published in what I'm calling 'The Gray-verse.' Sounds ominous, right?

What can you expect from my stories?

First, you have to love a slow burn, angsty romance. I tend to get quite bored when my characters are happy and together, which is why I keep them in various stages of misery and yearning for as long as I can *que evil laugh.* Yes, my books are spicy, but they are far more focused on the plot of the story and character development (MUST LOVE INTERNAL CHARACTER MONOLOGUES OR I PROMISE YOU WILL HATE MY WRITING STYLE). Finally, both of my series focus on themes of and around the following: trauma, mental health, grief, community, found family, moral complexity, and dismantling oppressive systems (yes, yes, amongst the chaotic fun of a fantastical world and characters unabashedly pining for each other).

Sound like your jam? Great! Dive right in :D

As for me, when I'm not writing or reading or funneling entire seasons of TV into my brain in one night, I can be found hanging out with my cartoonish dog, staring at a wall for hours on end while I think through some tricky bit of character or plot arc, paddleboarding/kayaking alongside the local seals and sea lions (don't worry, I keep a respectful distance!), or pretending to enjoy camping. One day it will click for me. I hope.

That ending is mean af.
Also I don't understand why Alpha 6 isn't more confused about the supernatural considering what's going on with Atlas.

Going to dive into the next book. Pleaseeeee I want more of the vampire~~~

The twist at the end was pretty obvious. I was actually more surprised that it was only Atlas who was a werewolf--I thought all of them would be wolves. The main character made some epically stupid choices in this one, which included apparently forgetting that she was given a cell phone her first day, that she never uses, even though it would be super useful. The plot is very much all over the place, and not a single question even has a hint of an answer. It's book two of a supposed reverse harem, but we still have no real clue who the harem is going to be (stalker wolf-boi and his crew? Darius? Jer? Who knows!), and there's once again just no romance in this. This isn't slow burn, it's non-existent burn, which isn't a great choice for a RH. We need time for them to grow into their bonds together and get to know each other, but it's still just a whole team who distrust her for literally no reason.

The only reason I'm going to continue the series is because I'm hoping it turns out the protectors are actually the bad guys and she ends up with a harem of monsters, but I won't hold my breath on that last part.

*warning- on page hook ups with OW throughout the series*

Max and her adopted brother Rowan have lived in isolation with their adopted father. She since birth, and Ro since early childhood. They have limited interaction with humans, and none with the supernatural world. In fact, though their father trains them aggressively every day of their lives to be be fighters known as Protectors, he has taught them nothing else about their world. Until they are suddenly moved to an academy overnight and thrust into the world their father has run away from for decades.

Max is 18yo but after a sheltered life she is very much naive and immature. She’s a great fighter for sure, but constantly word vomits incessantly. And she had her very first kiss just before their father said they’re moving to the academy. She then manages to swoon and lose her brain cells whenever she is in close proximity to anyone - both male and female.

They have some weird bonding system- it’s not always voluntary, often forced by their parents as a political move, and not even necessarily sexual. Max states she has zero interest in ever being bonded, but obviously that is not how it is going to go. I don’t buy any real chemistry with this bonding though. Half of them can’t stand her, and one who claims to like her still fucks anything else. And since she “clicks” with anyone that close to her, they’re frankly easily replaceable.

The team she’s meant to bond to eventually is, of course, going to be an issue. There’s three guys- two are friendly to her and one who hates her. And also one female named Declan, who is not very nice for many books. Honestly I wish she had a different bond team.

Ugh. Of course, the most asshole standoffish guy has the mean girl hanging off of him and claiming him as hers. 🙄 And another flirts relentlessly, but also hooks up with others. In fact, Max walks in on him banging one and he jokes and invites her to join them. 🤮 From what I’ve seen, he continues his fuckboy ways until book 4 (haven’t gone past that yet).

Honestly I wish she had a better bond team. She deserves better.

AssholeAtlas decides that no one in their team is allowed to be nice to her, and they all just follow along like puppies. Even while admitting that some of them felt a bond pull towards her, they all decide to suddenly start ignoring her and treating her coldly. She winds up living in their cabin and they treat her like a pariah, even leaving her behind when they go on a mission. Again, she deserved better.

Why am I continuing this series? I don’t know. The storyline isn’t awful 😂 I’m hesitant because there are so many books in the series, and often that means the author drags it out with fluff and then I lose interest. Per the reviews I have seen, a number of people felt that way. We’ll see how far I make it.

I am a sucker for a slow-burn fantasy/paranormal reverse harem, and this one is SLOW, but it does it well. I am really addicted to this story. I like all of the characters (FMCs, MCs, side characters, etc.), and I cannot wait until everyone finally gets together with Max. I saw some reviews about how Atlas is too mean, but I don't think he's that mean...he is definitely not a bully...he kind of just ignores Max and then saves her life every time she's in deep shit.

The only reason I bumped book 2 down to 4 stars is because the romance and plot were progressing sooooo slowly. But that ending was action-packed. Poor Wade. My heart breaks for him--the guy can't catch a break. I hope the hellhound is actually a person and is one of her mates, and I also hope that Darius is one of her mates! Love Atlas and Declan. Not the biggest fan of Eli tbh, but he's fine.

I can't wait to keep reading the next books.

So many inconsistency and plot holes. The protectors seem like they are the bad guys and just don’t know it or rather to arrogant to notice it.

I liked this better than the first book. The characters are starting to interact and connect more. Still unsure what Max is but I feel like the ending really said so much. Clearly the vampire that looked at her knows her. I liked Wade in this one. So much happened at the end. I predicted what Atlas was in the first book. The cliff hanger really did surprise me but I feel like it’s only the beginning.

That twist st the end!!!

OMG HOLBORN! This book had me on edge. I never expected that twist. Now I'm curious to the how....

Man I'm really starting to hate Atlas' team. And my boy Wade we really need to stop putting him in those positions please

Overall this is an amazing book. Definately slow burn and the twist at the end is killer. Can't wait for the next books!

This is the second installment in the Protector Guild series, and trust me, it’s a wild ride you don’t want to miss.

Imagine this: creatures from hell are breaking through to the human world like never before, and Max, along with The Guild, is on the front lines trying to figure out why. When Headmistress Alleva shows up at Headquarters, everything is flipped upside down. Recruits, including Max, are thrust into high-stakes apprenticeships with top teams to combat the escalating threat. Sounds intense, right? It gets even better.

Max is starting to realize that being a protector is nothing like she imagined. The black-and-white world she knew is now filled with shades of gray, and trust is in short supply. The creepy research lab they’re dealing with? Super suspicious. And Team Six—Atlas, Wade, Declan, and Eli—are making her life both thrilling and complicated. Seriously, if the monsters don’t get her, those guys just might.

The action is relentless, the intrigue is thick, and the slow-burn romance is just perfect. Max is an absolute joy—she’s witty, tough, and starting to question everything she once believed. Her banter and resilience will keep you hooked. Plus, the ending? Heartbreaking. But hang in there, because it’s so worth it. I couldn’t stop myself from diving straight into book three.

One tiny frustration: Max is way too forgiving of Team Six’s hot-and-cold treatment. She deserves better, and I’m dying for the moment they realize just how lucky they are to have her. The character development and relationship building in this book are top-notch, and you won’t be able to put it down.

I chose to read this book over sleep, and I have zero regrets. If you love action, slow burn spice, and a plot that keeps you on your toes, Forging the Guild is your next must-read.

2.5⭐️0🌶️

I enjoyed this, I’m not denying it, it just felt this was an exact repetition of the first book.

There wasn’t any character or real plot development, not new information and definitely not the revelation of the Guild being the bad ones who are committing genocide thinking a whole race is bad.

I’m not a fan that a whole book is just being two or three days In the characters life. The books are going to star to feel dragged out and Im probably going to get bored.

Atlas being a wolf was predictable so I find it really hypocritical from him and his team to think every creature is bad.

I liked the addition of Darius as a character I just hope he participates in more ways than just through his cage.

Clearly Max is not totally a protector so Im also intrigued in how that will develop.

The dynamic the six have feels broken and they really are treating Max like shit so I would like to see some groveling and explanations please.

Cyrus is clearly keeping secrets so I hope that also gets uncovered on the next books.

I like to asume all characters with a pov in the book are going to be part of the harem but honestly idk, nobody is giving the fussy feelings of wanting to be in any type of relationship.

I’m also positive Wade is going to come back, how? Idk, but then why would they take the body?

Honestly I don’t think this series is going to get better, I think it will just be more of the same, so just another generic RH, but hey! I wouldn’t be against being surprised.

Love me a Hellhound Pet!!

🔥 Paranormal Romance
🔥 Slowburn
🔥 Academy Setting
🔥 Naive FMC - Max

This book is short with a lot of action and a bit of world building. It is intriguing and kept my attention easily. There are so many secrets, unknowns, twist and turns. After that cliffy, I don't know how she comes out of this one!!

There is no spice for Max but she is slowly growing feelings for team 6. Even though they seem to be keeping her at arms length. It's frustrating because they are hurting her in the process. Excited to see what happens next!

My Personal Ratings:

5 Stars: Loved it! Couldn’t put it down or obsessed about it while needing to get to the end of it. Had to share some bits with my hubby!! Usually read in less than 2 days cause a girl has got to sleep sometime. Will be reading everything this author has to offer and most likely reread the series as next books in the series are released.

4 Stars: Really Good. Whether the story drew me in or a specific character, will definitely continue the series and look into more books by this author.

3 Stars: Enjoyed something about the book, whether it be the storyline or a character but also may have not liked something. Sometimes the book is great but needs some TLC from an editor. May or may not continue the series.

3.5 Rounded up.

This book was weird. There was a lot of waiting in this once but once the fighting and the action started it really didn't stop. It's a bit too repetitive with the Wade stuff but its a good story that makes me want to keep reading. It is a slow burn romance so there isn't too much smut which is a nice change of pace from a lot of other fantasy romances lately (not saying that the smut is a bad thing but if you read the same format over and over it gets tedious). I do think that this second book is too short. I don't really think there was really a reason to break the first two up like this but it did build suspense. I figured out the secret that Team 6 was holding onto pretty fast but I don't think it was supposed to be that well-kept of a secret.

absolutely SOBBING 10/10 book

Holy shit oh my god what is going to happen now???? I need to know!!! I am sobbing at 2am when moments ago I thought surely I’d go to sleep once I finished since it was almost over. WHAT. My heart breaks for every character. These books so far are really bringing a lot of emotions out of me. Usually humor is the general vibe, but man I also keep getting hit with nearly every other emotion out there. Which is impressive given the length of the books… I need to start book 3 I don’t think I can rest without starting it… no spice still, but cute and unexpected kisses. There are a lot of books in the series I’m sure eventually things could get spicy, but these books so far are interesting enough that I’m totally fine with things as they are. 10/10 read.

I noticed barely a few errors in this book but it’s so easy to move past and still easily understand. Not sure why so many people act like having errors in a book instantly makes it a bad book the plot is absolutely amazing with great characters. CHILL.

Wow!! That was just mean!

Wade barely survived the fight from book 1 but he isn’t waking up. Atlas is more surly than ever because of his worry for his brother and Max is trying to help Ralph.

There are a few more characters introduced and/or we get to know that better in the second book. I can tell they will have more significance in the series as it goes on.

I am getting the feeling Max is something else but there aren’t any clues dropping what or who she really is. That is kind of annoying because I like to connect the dots. I love Ralph and if something happens to him I will riot. Rowan is the brother/best friend any girl could hope for and I need more of him as well.

I thought book 1 had a brutal cliffhanger. Book 2 was just cruel. No spoiler from me but I was pretty angry. More than pretty angry. That just sucked balls. I need to walk away from this series for a bit because of how that affected me.

The story moved along but I found Max's character annoying. I understand that she grew-up isolated but she was trained her whole life. As such, for her character to disobey rules, forget to take weapons, forget to be prepared for a fight doesn't feel right. She was trained for years and years, but she needs to be saved by older males that know better...

There is no romance in this one either, at this point it is hard to see any relationship with any of the men. She feels a bond and so do the other men but they are questioning it and following Atlas' stay away from Max rule. Also, Eli has no problem bedding women frequently....if there is a bond present I see this as cheating... and for me this is hard to overlook and make him a good guy. How will he share Max with his team in future if he can't keep it in his pants now bc he has a high sexual drive.

Not for me, I won't be reading next one.

I’m giving this book 3.5 stars for a couple of reasons. 1 being when I read about the first book it indicated it was a reverse harem and I get the slow burn/slow build but at the end of book 2 and all we have are love interests? She should have at least one committed partner at this point. And 2 the ending with Wade makes no sense. He goes from barely being able to get out of bed, to not only getting out of bed but finding her in the woods in a secondary location before anyone else has caught up? I’m gonna have to call bull shit on that.

The author really didn’t explain how the guys were able to catch up with the vampire and hellhound so fast when they had an obvious head start nor how she caught up to them. There are a lot of plot holes in this second book.

I have really enjoyed the elements of the story so far but I do wish it was a bit more fast paced. I am interested to see what her nature is revealed to be and all these secrets being kept. It also seems the world is a lot more gray than the protectors would like her to know or believe.

“Following rules was not going to be one of my strong suits while living in this world.”

“My mind was an annoying beast that wouldn’t shut the fuck up half the time.”

“What an odd thing to smile about, castration.”

WOOOOOOAAHHHHHHH THE ENDING??? I’m beyond devastated but delusional enough to think it’ll all work out.
Another, I didn’t say it was good I said I enjoyed it book<3

This is exactly what I was looking for in this book, the plot definitely thickened, Max wasn’t nearly as insufferable (though at times she still made me literally roll my eyes).
Ralph being injured is so beyond not okay, fix my sweet baby.
I’m gonna say this with the most love and respect I can muster, but it SUB. CONSCIOUS. NOT UNCONSCIOUS.
“Max unconsciously took a step back” no the fuck she didn’t. Girly is fully awake and SUBconciously took a step back.
Anyways.

Consider me fully invested.
