UPDATE: JUST FINISHED ANOTHER READ OF THIS BOOK AND ITS ALWAYS ALWAYS BETTER THAN I REMEMBERED I WILL NEVER EVER GET OVER THIS BOOK
This was truly a disappointing and deeply confusing read for me. You could see the basis of a very good story but the way the book was constructed simply didn't work.
It sounded very much like a debut novel, which is not necessarily bad but in this case it made for an uncomfortable read at best.
It had no rhythm. Massive paragraphs where the characters went into one string of consciousness after another. Changing their minds on the same things over and over and glancing over what was actually happening. They were fighting and then suddenly they were reflecting about love and the fight was over and I couldn't even really comprehend what had happened.
Long descriptions that got mixed up with neverending internal monologues pulled you away from the narrative and what was actually happening in the scene. The murder mystery part actually loses its importance over how much internal conflict the characters have and they don't even explain any of it. It's cryptic from page one and I was waiting for things to fall into place and make sense but they never did.
Also, honourable mention to the instant love that Soren feels for Xavier for no apparent reason other than him being beautiful. I kept waiting for Soren to reveal something that had happened prior to this, and caused him to have such faith/allegiance to this boy, but nope.
A poor attempt at found family and a great deal of self loathing combined with whining about their past 24/7 made so that I didn't really connect with any of the characters. The magic system was very poorly explained, I feel like it must've been really clear to the author so she didn't really feel the need to paint a clear picture of how magic works in this world or of its societal norms.
I had great expectations for this book, and the premises are really good, the whole Victorian scene with magic and secret society made this a must read when I first found it on IG, but I feel like this needed to be revised a couple more times, especially because of the amount of word repetition (especially names).
Not sure if I will be reading the sequel just because I'm so done with these characters already
I had really high hopes for this book, but it unfortunately wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. Not bad for an indie author debut, but also nothing stellar. I’m not sure that I would read this again. The concept was great, however the execution was less-than. To me, in my own personal opinion, this felt like a Stalking Jack the Ripper-ripoff mixed with trope upon trope to keep the booktok addicts satiated. This book was so clearly written to be marketable, and of course, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. However, it felt like the tropes, characters, and dynamics were shoved down our throats for the sake of marketability and some flashy lines to post on social media in hopes of going viral, which detracted from the overall value of the book. You could see the “plot twist” around a certain (spoiler) character's identity coming from the beginning, and Lock was just your stereotypical brooding book boyfriend who’s only major purpose seemed to be dropping a few swoon-worthy lines. The mystery wasn’t terrible by any means, but it was certainly predictable.
As for the actual writing, it needed work. Maybe another round of editing. There were many repeated words, odd sentence structure and phrasing, and big, chunky paragraphs that just interrupted the flow of the story. I don’t really know much about the author, but I could maybe guess that she is younger and that these flaws will improve with experience. Technical gripes aside, there were just parts of this book that were slow, boring, and confusing. That, combined with elements included purely for the sake of marketability are what makes this a two-star read for me personally. It wasn’t super well-written, but I loved the premise!
LITERALLY AMAZING. IF THIS BOOK DOESNT GET TURNED INTO A FILM AT SOME POINT I WILL BE UPSET.
The characters, plot work, and aesthetic are amazing. I love each and every character with my heart (minus a few but I keep my reviews to no spoilers until it’s out)
As her debut novel, I think that Emmaline Leigh has outdone herself before she has even began and I can’t wait for KoC to be made public.
I want to protect Aura, Lock, Sören, and Iskra with my life and if any harm ever comes to any of them I will riot.
One thing that I love about this book is that it has mystery done well and constantly left me guessing.
There is romance in the way that it makes you kick and giggle excitedly and not in an overwhelming way.
Be warned, THIS BOOK WILL BRING OUT ALL OF THE EMOTIONS. Laughs, giggles, and tears… ALL OF IT. I love it.
If I could rate this book out of more stars, I would. 100000000/10 for me
--- i want to thank the author for giving me an opportunity to be an ARC reader for kingdom of cards!
-- overall, this book was everything a mystery girl could want. magic, found family, murder, historical fiction. it was brilliant. the writing style flowed so well and was descriptive, without being too confusing to follow. the setting was immersive. it felt as if i was there, experiencing it along with the beloved characters. the effort and attention to details was impressive. however, there were some parts i got confused on, but i feel as if that's regular for some mystery books. after some reflecting on the story and refreshing my mind, i understood it.
-- i fell in love with all of the characters. they're all so beautifully written. each had their own motives to play into the plot, but ended up working together. this formed an unexpected found family dynamic.
-- "death fueled her." - aura is a queen. she's intelligent and intuitive, yet she has her own secrets. she's ambitious and driven, but cares deeply for those around her. her alter ego is a prominent part of her character and her internal conflict is so compelling.
-- "nothing could convince me that i'm not taken, wholly and devastatingly by you." - lock is the newest addition to the book boyfriend list. he's so thomas cresswell and tewksbury coded, if they were russian with a cursed heart. his banter is top tier and i want to kick his parents. his reaction to aura's alter ego is realistic and it broke my heart. let my guy have a break in the sequel, please? like aura, his internal conflict makes his character seem truly real.
-- "iskra storenné was thinking about setting a fire. more specifically, setting one." - i love that for you girl. arsonist icon. i loved her so much. she resonated with me i think more than the other characters. she wanted to separate herself from her parents and build her own life and reputation. her situationship with zoialynne was heartbreaking and i don't think i'll forgive the author for that. her arc and conflict was intriguing and i loved reading her chapters.
-- "you're also rather cocky. anyone told you that?" - i'm afraid sören ate with that one. i love reading his chapters as well. his regrets and internal struggles were -- apologies to use this term again -- compelling. all of the characters conflicts were. i'm obsessed with sören's dynamic with xavier. him sneaking behind his father's back to investigate was iconic.
some other notes i had: - iskra and sören: best otp there is. example a: "and jumping into moving carriages is a regular occurance for you?" "still not over that are you?" - my lockaura heart. brutally sobbing they were two beating hearts that danced around danger, knowing they’d be safe within each other’s arms." "together, they were infinite." - i love the magic system and the world building. i love the concept of the optical, emotive, auditory, and perceptive magic. - the way i screamed when the title showed up
once again, thank you to the author for the ARC and allowing me to claim my spot as a KoC stan before its published! 4.5⭐️
I enjoyed the book, though there were a lot of punctuation and grammar/spelling errors that proved to be distracting at times. Moreover, the book seemed to be heavily focused on marketability and becoming a booktok-type book, which unfortunately led to oversimplified characters, and plots defined by tropes. Also, the magic system was not very defined or explained well for a fantasy book. Perhaps a second installment will explain this element better? I think the book had potential but ultimately fell flat due to various things. However, if you like Victorian London and fantasy, it may be worth checking out!
I debated forever what to do with this review because I really do think the idea is so fresh and interesting & I think the author has a ton of potential.
But the lack of editing really got to me.
It’s so difficult to independently publish, and I have mad respect for this author’s efforts and creativity. But this book really could’ve used some revising and editing.
Outside of that, I think the idea was very original and the book had a lot of personality. I am excited to see what the author does in the future!
MAN i am excited about this review bc i took WAY too long to read this but bc i took my time i have SO much to say ‼️ note to the author - i am so so proud of u this book is a work of art. anyway. the main thing i wanna say. i get confused EASILY. and i know some people do too, especially in fantasy. if you’re one of these people, PLEASEEE STICK IT OUT. the magic system & the general first few chapters are difficult, yes, but i’m BEGGING YOU see it through because my god is it worth it. i’ve not read stalking jack the ripper so to me the style of this feels a lot like the atlas six and i am so here for it i feel like when i review books i’m often focused on the description or the dialogue or the plot. but i can’t help but comment on the character development hello????? we all know i’ve been waiting for this book for eons - and especially my girl iskra - and my god did it not disappoint. the second she mentioned she didn’t care for dresses in her first chapter i was giggling and kicking my feet ahem anyway. but as much as i was looking forward to iskra’s chapters it was soren that surprised me oh my GOD i need the entirety of book 2 to be from his perspective pls and thank you overall for a debut novel r u kidding me? the amount of talent this woman has i will never recover. girl i am so unbelievably proud of u now release book 2 pls x
On hold at 45% (Ch.21) for now - not a bad book, but the pacing isn’t working for me atm. might consider continuing later in the future when I’m in the mood for it
2/5 stars, I know how difficult indie author debuts can be, so while I will be giving my honest opinion, I would like to congratulate the author for getting this far! You're doing great <3
Kingdom of Cards has a good balance of charming characters that I really enjoyed getting to know over the course of the book. My personal favorite was Iskra; she had so much personality and I found her backstory the most interesting. There was obviously a lot of love that was put into making these characters unique individuals, and it really shows.
My main problem with this story is the numerous amount of spelling, grammar, and tense errors. Even the character names are spelt inconsistently; for most of the book the name "Rien" was spelt with the i before e, but multiple times it was spelt "Rein." If it were just one typo every so often I wouldn't make a big deal, but I'm talking at least once every chapter. I really feel like this could have used another round of edits.
Also, there was the long, chunks of internal monologue that took you out of the story. I understand that we want to hear the thoughts of the main characters, but they often spiral into long, rambly paragraphs that are exhausting to read. A lot of the times, there are random sentences that seem to exist solely for the purpose of being highlighted or quotable and don't fit into the story whatsoever. I admit, I highlighted my fair share of them too, but I did it begrudgingly because they just did not flow well.
My last critique would have to be the pacing and storytelling. It feels like the book was an infinite cycle of Of course books naturally have recurring structure, but the way KoC presents itself felt repetitive and predictable. On the other end of the spectrum, however, is the absolute unpredictability of the ending. The plot twists were, in my opinion, foreshadowed improperly if at all. The climax of the story was so confusing and hard to follow, and honestly I do not understand what happened in the mansion scenes.
I really tried to understanding the world building and magic system, but I found it very challenging. I don't think the concept and origin of Twisted abilities was properly explained, nor was the difference between normal magic users and Twisted. From what I understand, I love the concept that the author was going for, but I think it should have been explained more thoroughly.
I hate to give such a critical review to an indie, self-published novel, so I want to specify that I did enjoy Kingdom of Cards. As a writer myself I think critique and feedback is an important part of improving one's writing. I sincerely wish the author luck on their writing journey and look forward to reading their future works :)
— a personal thank you to the author for allowing me to receive an ARC <3 —
To be honest, for a indie debut book, this is actually a lot better than what I could hope for and I truly believe people should read this book to support the author as it’s an enjoyable read, however, in my personal opinion, while it’s an interesting storyline, it could use some work.
To start with, each character is unique and has a great background that really drives each of them. You can tell the amount of work that the author put into creating them. Even the plot-line has been carefully curated to form this amazing magical mystery set in 1889. It is a great mix of a mystery-fantasy book. I truly loved the dynamics between the characters, and the way they each drive the story forward. On my end though, the writing could use a bit work. With repeated sentences, phrasings, odd wordings, it was just a struggle to keep going.
Not to say that this isn’t readable, it totally is. In fact, if you look past some of the writing flaws, the book is rather great. Especially when you take note that this is a debut novel, you can ignore such issues. I just found myself at times more confused or frustrated than anything at certain repeated wordings, inconsistencies, or long paragraphs—which again is understandable. I truly hope that in the sequel there will be less of those issues, but then again, if you take what I just said at face value, you know I’m excited for the sequel.
This book should absolutely be added to your TBR. You will find yourself in love with certain descriptions and the complex characters. It will make you want to support and hug all these traumatized children—who desperately need a hug, lol. Not to mention, the relationships are interesting to read and watch evolve. The world building is on another level though; I love the mix of London set in this secret society magical world with ups and downs that can send you reeling and it might be my favorite part of the whole book, ngl. You will find yourself wanting to not put the book down after the first few chapters; and what’s great is the author throws you right into the action, so you can’t ever feel bored. So, while I personally may have found it to be 3/5 stars, you may think differently.
I have a complicated relationship with less-than glowing reviews when it’s a book that I did enjoy, but here we go.
It takes enormous talent to be an author. It takes patience, diligence, and commitment to even finish writing a novel, let alone get it published, so I understand the draw that self-publishing has on young authors and I respect that. Emmaline’s ideas drew me in and characters encouraged me to stay and compulsively read (when I had time), but the execution fell short.
From the get-go I was distracted by the numerous spelling and grammar mistakes (e.g. writing “well-bread” instead of “well-bred” when refering to social standing, “sever” written as “severe” etc). There were also so many commas in places that didn’t need commas, and no commas where there should have been. The magic wasn’t explained and, even though I’m a prolific fantasy reader, I found myself unable to follow or comprehend exactly how or why it functioned. The scenes jumped and skipped, which sometimes made it feel like the reader was missing out on crucial information. Unfortunately I felt like I was reading the first draft instead of the final product.
Now that all of that negativity is out of the way, let’s get to what I did like! I’m a big fan of historical fantasy set in Victorian times; it just doesn’t seem to get old for me. Throw in a charming lord with a curse, a poison scientist apprenticing at a cadaver lab, and a very wholesome friends-to-lovers situation?? Sold. Lock and Aura’s POVs were fun to read and very entertaining (if a little overdone at points), but I can’t lie: I didn’t particularly care for Iskra or Sören at all. The mystery was intriguing and the stakes kept the story from lagging, which was nice considering it isn’t a particularly short novel.
All in all, I’m glad that I read it; I just wish there had been more editting before pub day. 3/5
Aura: don’t get me started on her she is everything!!!! When I read her first chapter I instantly knew she was going to be my favorite(locks the exception of course ) she is so brave and broken I love her so much!!! The way she cares about lock she refuses to hurt him even if it hurts herself. She picks the hardest path to choose even if it will hurt I have to say it again I love her!!!!
Lock: ahem this man had no right being soo….I have no words…I LOVE this man soo much!!! He’s charming, ridiculous, and so sweet at the same time! The way he cares for aura so much and their relationship is everything I rooted for them the whole way through the book!! He and aura are broken and they have dark pasts but the way they supported and loved each other!!❤️❤️❤️ Can’t say enough to sum up how much these characters mean to me!!!
Iskra: the moment she met aura I wanted them to be friends!!! She’s so feisty and sarcastic!!! Even though she seems harsh and reserved I can tell she deeply cares for her friends!!! What has happened to her is absolutely devastating and I was rooting for her the whole way through!!!
Soren: this little cinnamon roll!!!!! He’s so sweet and so trusting! If anybody hurts him when I have a talk with them they will wish they never had!!! This boy is ridiculous and loving and brave at the same time and I love him for it!!! He’s that kind of hero who is still afraid but does what’s right!!! He is so afraid of losing any of his friends and he’s willing to put himself in danger for them😭❤️
There were parts where I was a little confused on what was happening but that might have just been my fault 🤦♀️ This book was really good and I can’t wait to see what emmaline does in the second book!!! But she better give all these characters the best endings or I swear….
Huge props to Emmaline Leigh: self publishing a novel is a huge accomplishment! ❤️ Let’s start with the positives: I really enjoyed the atmosphere and of the story. All the characters blended well into the setting, their conflicts believable, albeit a bit dramatized for YA. The plot was intriguing and the magic system was unique. I really cared about the characters, Sören and Iskra in particular. I also appreciate a good “the bad guys all along” trope, I think (though maybe a bit predictable) it was utilized rather well.
Unfortunately, there were numerous things keeping me from enjoying this book completely. A lot of the pacing felt off, scenes jumping around not always lining up in the most efficient storytelling manner. The magic, though intriguing, didn’t feel properly explained, and the plot took a few too many twists that left me trying to recall too many details and feelings slow. All in all, Kingdom of Cards has a solid premise and most of the execution I enjoyed. However, I do think it could have done with another round of editing.
All that being said, I look forward to reading continuation of the series and the authors improvement!
i tried to like it really hard. The magic system and the overall theme and plot are actually interesting and it had a lot of potential. But sadly the book was really poorly written. The magic system wasn't explained properly. The story telling was very abrupt. There were so many things that made no sense. I mean I really liked the characters but it was just poor execution. Sören meets Xavier for the first time, he randomly asks him to steal the most dangerous magical artifact for him and he just agrees? YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW HIM!? Honestly the whole Xavier thing was kinda weird. He kept popping up in the story which made you think that he might be relevant but he was just a very side character. Aura's character was made out to be really complex but then again the writing was really confusing. The author could have added so much depth to her character. Same with Locke, the only personality he had was loving aura. Iskra was nice and I think the most rational character I started this book with really high hopes but it was honestly really hard to finish this
Honestly, I expected more. Aside from the numerous typos, the writing was nice, yes, but read like a collection of TikTok quotes written for the sake of marketability. Magic was under explained, and although the characters were well fleshed-out, there was too much internal conflict that distracted me from the plot. It was paced oddly and left me confused at times. The romance was excellent, though, and I rate this a 1.5. The author might have benefited from a few more edits and to stop trying to make the book a troped-up TikTok sensation and simply write what comes naturally; there is no denying that Emmaline has a way with words. That being said, Emmaline has a lot of potential and I am excited to see where she takes her writing. I will just be tentative to read instagram suggested books.
Okay, okay, okay. Let me tell you, when I say that this book is perfection, it is.
I am someone who is obsessed with 19th century England and fantasy books AND THIS IS JUST THAT BUT COMBINED. It was perfect and exciting and I couldn't wait for it to be published!! It was definitely worth the wait!
Because first of all, Lock and Aura literally have my heart. Aura is just such a icon and I love her so much. And Lock is so husband material, don't even get me started-
Iskra is such a badass as well, I loved her character and personality. And we must protect Sören at all cost.
The plot is simply just amazing and THE ENDING?? HELLO?? I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THAT AND TEARS HAD BEEN SHED.
I literally love this book so much and it has my heart!
I think the idea was really great… but the execution in so many scenes was lacking. It was a very character focused book so the world building seemed meh even thought it was great in the idea just it could’ve been explained and showed in better ways.
I love Lock and Aura so much but then again half the scenes had such vague descriptions I couldn’t even figure out the things happening around. I’m not saying to describe everything like the colours of the curtains, but a little more description would be helpful!
I loved plot though and can’t wait to read the second book, I love the cards reference and the angst in this book.
There are a million thoughts going through my head about this book. I may have rated this 5 stars, but it deserves ten TBH.
First of all, LOVED IT. Second, hate Avery with my entire existence. Third, Lock and Aura <3333333. Words can't describe how much I love these two. A couple *plot points* did break me but that ending was exquisite. Well done, Emmaline. Yet again, time to go to bed cuz it's nearly 1AM.
SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP I wish i could rate this 10 stars.
I just finished reading this book and I am genuinely speechless. Everything about KoC was so incredibly thought out - there was never a point in the book where I knew what was going to happen next. I’ve never been so invested in a book and I absolutely cannot wait for the sequel!!
ALSO a moment for Lock and Aura please I love them so much 😇😇
4.1 Sold book! This book was actually pretty good. I think I would have liked it more if it didn’t take me like so long but it’s ok. My only thing is that I think all there trauma-if you know what I’m talking about-was to much of a main focus to the point where I can recite it. Anyways the book was good nonetheless! LOCK is very fine❤️ BUT PLEASE EVERYONE READ THIS BOOK!!! I HAVE FOUND A NEW FAVORITE AUTHOR!! SORËN IS SUCH A BADDIE💅🥵🫢🧎♀️
Don't judge me for how long it took me to finish this book- COMPLETLY NOT THE BOOKS FAULT I was in a huge reading slump lol.
I loved this book so much! I loved all the characters and the magic system and the banter and relationships! And the twists and turns were so good and kept me guessing and I absolutely loved the pacing and backstories to the characters!
I was on the edge of a reading slump when I picked up this book, and I’m happy to say that feeling didn’t last for long. The author does an excellent job of crafting complex, sympathetic characters with unique backstories. I loved reading about their dynamics, especially when it came to the banter. and of course, I can’t mention banter without mentioning the romance, which was just perfect. Aura just might have competition for Lock (me).
I’m usually really good at predicting plot twists but I had quite a bit of trouble with solving the mystery—I almost guessed it, but was still quite surprised. This is a very strong low fantasy debut. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves books similar to The Gilded Wolves!
