Shadows and Saviors by Lexi Ostrow is captivating and enthralling. This post-apocalyptic read was so fun. From the ruins of life, to each character's personal stories, not to mention FIVE guys, one girl 😏 The story flowed really well, and the smut was GREAT. I truly enjoyed the storyline and never knew what to expect next, as there is always danger just around the corner in a post bombs world. There was a bit of a cliffhanger end that left me wanting more! How exciting that I was selected to be an ARC reader for this book, definitely hoping for a second book!

"Her eyes narrowed again for a moment and she passed him back his card. "And you'll protect me on the journey there?" Chris nodded. "With my fucking life. It's what I do.""

This seriously, seriously needs an editor. At some points Alex (one of the MMCs) was mentioned as a woman. I had to go back and check what I was actually reading. Radiation that only supposedly affects others not her or her animals. Because apparently it doesn't filter into air vents, open doors, humans.... A scarf to combat radiation. I just couldn't....Did we actually read about the MMCs being super soldiers too??? Functional drones??? Did Emma actually ask for a helicopter to pick her and her animals up??? lol ( I'm sorry to laugh, this was just beyond me )

I have questions.....

The point of having POVs is to avoid this jumble of a mess. There has to be someone leading the story at points, not everyone at once. I couldn't even tell you who was who. No one stood out. All the characters have to stand out to support the plot. Even Emma was like a footnote of "that other survivor".

Where is the heart of this story???

What effectively killed the headache I would have ended up with, is the heroine. So people everywhere are starving to death. She apparently had farm animals in the basement of her farm. Even a cow. Let's not even try to dissect that one. She was going out scavenging for things risking all sorts of horror because of being female. Essentially this book is depicted in the blurb as what happens to the last women in earth.

"I can't go on living if they can't" ( the animals )

She wouldn't eat the animals????? Because how dare they be like that (the MMCs) and not understand they shouldn't be touched....... lol !!!.... Her bright idea is to give them to an army base (not where she would end up mind) What in the heck did she think hungry people were going to do with the animals....?????

What is the most basic instinct in humans people? .... Survival !!

Good premise, but poorly written.
Filled with repetition, continuity errors, cliché descriptions, and overly wordy sentences.

In desperate need of a good editing.

I gave up early, so don’t know if it gets better.

The book was trying really hard to convince me that the MMCs didn’t like the FMC solely because she was the first woman they’d seen in months, that her ability to sit tight in the basement for years on end made her somehow special and brave, and that she was somehow uniquely attracted to each of them as individuals despite the fact that they all kind of talk and act and look the same. Big and brawny and military. Bo-ring! Two of them even have the same name: William and Liam!

Funny thing is, I noticed a consistent typo with one of the MCs’ names that is indicative of a botched “find and replace” error, (every time his name is pluralized, the space before the previous word is deleted; someone put “_Chris’s” instead of “Chris’s” and hit “replace all”) so I like to imagine his name was ALSO originally some variant of William, like Bill, but the beta readers put their foot down.

The prose is often meandering and navel-gazing, which amplifies the effect of being told (instead of shown) everything about our characters. The peak of irritating prose comes in the form of these frequent paragraph-lists:

Chris will [sic] have his steadfast ways and obvious need to loosen up. Liam with his kind heart and brilliant mind. William and his need to impress and show up. Alex brought levity into her life when she didn’t think it would ever be possible to really laugh again. Even Bash with his false bravado was kind and lovingly, [sic] she just knew it.

All five of them were exactly as they’d been since the moment she stepped out of the radio tower. Chris, the stoic and disciplined leader, always vigilant and ready to lay down his life for her. Liam, the charismatic second-in-command whose easy smile masked a fierce loyalty. William, the quiet one, whose eyes betrayed a well of unspoken pain. And Alex, the cocky flirt with a heart of gold.

Emma’s mind drifted back again and again toChris’s gentle yet firm commands. Liam’s soft whispers guiding her through uncharted territories. William’s reassuring hand on her back whenever necessary. Bash’s gruff exterior hiding a painful past filled with regrets mirroring hers. Alex teasing smile and playful banter sparking up hope within her soul that hadn’t felt it for so long.

She thought aboutChris’s strong arms around her last night, bringing her to pleasure she’d never known. Of Liam’s gentle smile that always made her heart skip a beat. William’s quiet determination to keep them all safe. Bash’s rare but stunning smile and the protection she felt when his arms took her in his. Of Alex’s cocky smirk that could melt even the coldest heart.

It’s like even in her head she can’t dare to compliment one without adding the other four into it! I get that in RH you want the FMC to love all her guys equally, but it’s ideally supposed to feel a little more natural than this!

There are many typos and mistakes, and some blatantly ridiculous parts—a grenade thrown at an A/C unit does not create a “mushroom cloud”; no, Marcus did not “dodge” Alex’s bullet, Alex simply missed; people don’t drop instantly when shot in the neck; hotels do not have death-trap opposite stairwells where you can only go down 1 floor and then have to double back such that one busted staircase can trap you in the building (Jesus Christ, what a fire hazard that would be); you can’t “lean down and press foreheads together” with someone while they’re giving you a BJ; two people can’t DP with the girl in doggy position while they’re both standing behind her unless their 🍆 are somehow L-shaped; oh, and kissing does not snap you out of panic attacks or post-traumatic thousand-yard-staring.

This book is mainly character-driven and I loved it.
Emma has been living in the basement of her house with farm animals and her dogs since the world ended. Her simple but stressful way of life just isn’t working anymore. She takes a HUGE risk radioing others to try and get help. Luckily for her she gets Chris and his unit. They are part of the only military left in this dystopian world. They agree to help Emma get to the only safe place left in the country, Washington D.C.. This trip is difficult and dangerous but that doesn’t stop Chris and his team from wanting to help Emma. As they travel, they develop a bond but is it enough for them to stay together in the safe haven?
As I mentioned above this is a character-driven story and it works so well. There is obviously the plot of traveling to the safe haven but the focus is more on the characters. We start to see how each person was affected by the bombs while also seeing them grow closer. I think for this book it worked so well. I loved Emma’s relationship with each man. They were all different parts of what it means to care for someone and it was so well written.
Emma is such a strong character not just physically but also mentally. She had been living alone for years and never went crazy which is very difficult. She also continues to fight even in hard situations. I loved her as a main character and can’t wait to see more of her.
Chris, Liam, William, Bash, and Alex were amazing. I loved the different roles they played in the story. They were well written and developed so it didn’t feel like you were reading about the same person in different fonts. Their backgrounds were well developed and interesting as well. They were perfect love interests to Emma and matched her very well.
I cannot wait to see what comes of the epilogue in the second book. I was captivated the entire time and couldn’t wait to see what the characters did next. The dual POV works very well in this book and I think we would have missed out otherwise. I would 100% recommend this book to those seeking a good character-driven dystopian.

Infertility plagues the survivors, and a desperate search for hope leads Emma—a rare, fertile female—to reach out for help via an old radio. When five chivalrous men arrive to take her to safety, Emma's relief is tempered by apprehension. As they journey through a broken and dangerous landscape, Emma's feelings for these men evolve in unexpected ways. But secrets lurk, and safety remains elusive. Can their feelings shield her from the perils of being a woman in this shattered world? 🌎🔥

📝 **Review**:
"Shadows and Saviors" immerses readers in a gripping dystopian landscape. Lexi Ostrow's vivid prose paints a world teetering on the edge of collapse, where hope is scarce and danger is ever-present. Emma's vulnerability as a rare maybe fertile female contrasts with the strength she discovers within herself.

Starting this book was a bit of an adjustment for me as it’s written in third person, which isn't my usual preference since I’m more accustomed to multiple POVs in first person. However, Lexi Ostrow's writing quickly drew me in, making me feel like I was watching a movie unfold. This is my first time reading a post-apocalyptic novel, and the suspense lurking around every corner kept me hooked.

The slow burn romance between Emma and her five protectors—Chris, Bash, Liam, Alex, and William—is both tantalizing and heartwarming. It’s understandable they didn’t want to scare her off, especially since it had only been two days. After being alone for so long, I can’t imagine how I’d feel in her situation, but her decision to make the first move with Bash was satisfying.

As a reader accustomed to obsessive and possessive male characters, I appreciated the refreshing approach. Chris's gratitude and Emma's agency add depth to their connection. And when things turn steamy, Emma doesn't hesitate—a testament to her resilience.

When things heated up, the heroine didn't hold back, and the declarations at the end were beautifully written. However, the epilogue leaves readers hanging, setting the stage for a promising sequel. If you're ready for a thrilling ride through a shattered world, preorder "Shadows and Saviors" and brace yourself for a reverse harem romance that defies expectations. 🌟🔥

**Triggers:** Infertility, Post-apocalyptic survival, Bioweapons
**Tropes:** Slow burn, Military romance, Dystopian world, Why choose romance mmmmmf

“In this new world, even safety brought pain.”

“Shadows and Saviors,” by Lexi Ostrow

In a post-apocalyptic world, humans are fighting to stay alive. Safe havens exist to bring women who can bear children and save the human race. Emma’s father has died, and her hope of survival is diminishing, causing her to try to reach out to get help to a safe haven. Chris, Bash, Liam, Alex, and William all come to her aid to bring her to safety and solidify a place for them in the safe haven as well.

I loved this book so much. So many tropes I adore; reverse harem, dystopian, and forced proximity. All the characters were interesting, and I loved how they interacted with each other. The relationship aspect was not overly fast but also not too slow. Even though the story plot was important and a driving force there was still a large amount of time that was mostly character related and driven, it was such a good balance. This is definitely a book I will reread many times. 5 out of 5 stars, perfect.

Shadows and Saviors is set in a world ravaged by a deadly bioweapon, leaving destruction and infertility in its wake. With humanity teetering on the brink of extinction, a haven awaits those who can still bear children.

The slow-burn romance between Emma and her five protectors—Chris, Bash, Liam, Alex, and William—is both tantalizing and heartwarming. Given that it’s only been a few days, their cautious approach makes sense, and Emma’s decision to make the first move with Bash is particularly satisfying. I savored all the details.

As someone familiar with obsessive and possessive male characters, I found the refreshing dynamics here compelling. Chris’s gratitude and Emma’s autonomy deepen their connection, and when things heat up, Emma’s resilience shines through.

The steamy scenes are handled with gusto, and the emotional declarations towards the end are beautifully crafted. The epilogue, however, leaves readers eager for more, setting up a promising sequel.

So I've read and enjoyed several of Lexi's books before so I grabbed this one when I saw it. I used to love dystopian books and until now it's been about a decade since I've actually enjoyed one. Needless to say I am SO glad I picked this book up!!

This book follows Emma and her dog, Ranger, as they embark on a roadtrip with no less than FIVE hot military men who have rescued her from the lonely life she has been living. In the post apocalyptic world they currently live in all women of child bearing age are to be delivered to military compounds in order to be tested and repopulate the planet. But as they spend weeks traveling to the nearest "safe haven"/compound what could possibly happen between them? What happens when they reach the "safe haven" itself? Will these men be able to keep Emma safe on the journey?

I loved the characters and plot so much and they were all really well developed and created. I will say when there are so many main characters it can be a little hard to follow who is currently talking/communicating in the chapter. There are definitely a few places where a little extra editing could have helped, instead of men it said mean a few times, among other small issues. The flow and pacing were pretty decent as well. I can't wait to see what happens to these characters next!!

A modern day Dystopian America, a woman who’s managed to stay alive while alone, and five men in a military group looking to save the “right one.”

I like this story! I enjoy a strong, independent FMC, and Emma was just that! She had managed to stay safe after her fathers passing, along with her dogs and farm animals, until one day she decided it was time for a change. She called out on her CB…and little did she know her life would never be the same when she got her answer.

I enjoyed the guys in this book, each one was different and unique. Chris, Bash, Liam, Alex and William all had their own abilities and quirks that made them an asset to their team. They were their own found family after the bombs had taken away everyone else. They wanted a different life and were hoping someday they’d find the “one” who could love and accept them all…and then Emma’s call came out.

Insta-love isn’t my favorite, but I understand this was a time when men were the majority and women were mostly used for breeding IF they were still fertile. The guys had been looking for something, and Emma had been all alone for years. It makes sense there would be the instant connection.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and may pick up the sequel since this one left us on a cliffhanger.

A why choose/RH dystopian story about Emma, who has been hiding in her basement for the past 3 years due to toxic bombs that went off all over the country and either killed everyone or made them go crazy. She finally realizes that she has to make a change before she is kidnapped by any of the random men who are out scavenging. She meets Chris, Bash, William, Liam, and Alex, who are in the Army. They agree to escort her to the safe haven since women are in short supply these days. They will determine if she is able to get pregnant and then "breed" her if she is.
The book follows Emma and her guys on their trip to the Safe Haven and all the crazy situations they run into.
I enjoyed it quite a bit and am looking forward to reading book 2!

This lady either needs to hear an editor or fire the one she has the amount of mistakes in this book is very distracting; even a spell check would have fixed all the “Chris” errors, where his name lacked a space between it and the word before it. And there are times where the thought process jumps. One section i went back twice thinking I had missed when one of the MMC had no physical interaction with the FMC then a paragraph later the author is mentioning a hug that had just occurred but never happened. I found myself skipping paragraphs think, ugh you’re talking about that…again. The written can be a little confusing in regards to whose perspective she is writing from.
DNF and wont be reading anything else from this author.

awful 😞

I wanted to like this book but it was horrible. Majority of it was written like the author used AI. The details just dragged on and were not useful to the story line at all. Also, it would have been nicer to have more of the main female characters point of view. I say this because she just seemed so dull with a lack of personality. Almost every other paragraph had some form of sentence that stated it was a barren apocalyptic world. Which I got without the need to remind me so very often. Got this book on stuff your kindle day for free and I’m glad. Because if I would have bought it I would have been upset. 😭

I wanted to like this book. I really did. But wow… it was a train wreck. Most of it read like the author fed an AI some random prompts and called it a day. Endless, pointless details that did nothing for the plot.

And seriously—why can’t she just compliment one guy without dragging the other four into it? I get it, RH means everyone’s special, but could it at least feel natural? I lose a tiny piece of my soul every time she does it.

The world is literally over, civilization in ruins… but sure, they somehow have cologne. HAHAHA, please 🤌🏻 Everyone would 100% smell like sweat and despair.

This book was a disaster from start to finish.

Please check CW and TW before you start this one. Emma is in this post apocalyptic world that leaves very few females and thus posing a danger to her safety. In her cry for help the 5 men answer and promise to keep her safe until their final destination. This is a slow burn but it works so well for the progression of this story. I could not put this one down. I really hope we get more from Emma and her men I loved their chemistry.

This is a good book however I wish I knew going in it was book 1 of however many. It does end on a cliffhanger. It takes a while for it to take off. With so many characters normally authors have the chapters labeled what character is talking. This author does not. That took some getting used to. However even with all of that I’m waiting on the edge of my couch for the next book. The story is intriguing and I’m very much looking forward to the next book.

The blurb alone had me hooked!!
Why choose and dystopian or survival themes, yes please!
This book had my attention all they way.

Emma goes on quite the journey with her men. Filled with twists and turns, edge of your seat moments, and danger.
We also got action, drama, secrets, and eventually spice. I loved seeing the relationships develope between Emma and the guys. They seemed realistic and it fit well being a slow burn.
I think it was an excellent read!! I can't wait for more of Emma's story!!

I love a good dystopian romance, and this author delivers a thrilling and captivating one.

Emma is all alone in a post apocalyptic world, where women are scarce and in constant danger. As her hope of survival diminishes, she reaches out for help, desperate for a safe haven.

As Chris, Alex, Liam, Bash, and William answer a call, they find a woman on the other end. One in dire need of protection. Can these four men get her to safety or will this dystopian world be their downfall?

The story was so good. It flowed well and the characters are fantastic. You never know what’s coming with danger around every corner. The cliffhanger left me wanting more.

This is a first read from this author for me and also beginning of a new series. This is a reverse harem, dystopian setting, full of steam, action and mystery. I love the world building and getting to know each of the guys. The chemistry and dynamic between all the characters for me was amazing. Omg that cliffhanger was brutal . Now I’m on pins needles waiting for the next book.

This is a world of heartbreak and for Emma, it becomes one involving five hot military men who need each other to mend what the world has taken from them all. This is more of a slow burn than an instant heat story. I enjoyed the way each of the men took turns teaching Emma skills, sharing their stories, and getting to know each other better before getting intimate. It all ends on a very curious note.

The fertility plotline is one that I don’t think I’ve ever even read, nor did I think I would ever. I thought it was done well without overdoing it, which is a very fine line. Honestly in the setting it’s something pretty realistic that I never even considered. Speaking of realism in this story, it was an overall meh for me. A lot of the military stuff felt over-exaggerated and not realistic in my opinion, which ultimately broke the story for me. The plot did feel easily guessable which again felt like a pretty big downfall.
The spice was just not it for me. There was a slow burn which I liked, but the actual spice felt lacking and very unintimate. It was a shame considering the burn it took to get to the point.
Emma’s storyline was heartwarming, and I liked her immediately. There was good character development for Emma as well as the team itself. I would have liked to had more interactions with them.

A why-choose/RH set in a dystopian world. The story is really good and kept me intrigued. I loved each of the men’s journey in falling in love with Emma and her healing their trauma. Emma is the perfect mix of strong and vulnerable who finds herself five protective, golden retriever men. It’s got some SA aspects (off page and not with main characters) that readers may need to read with caution.

This was an interesting read. It was full of adventure and insanity. The love between the five men was obvious from the start. Emma began strong and smart. There are two extremely spicy scenes which I loved. I do wish the ending didn’t finish the way it did. I hope there is a second book to answer some questions. I did enjoy the apocalyptic feel.

A lot of grammar and spelling errors that made me put the book down. But the storyline and action had me picking it up again. It took me forever to read this. Definitely categorize as a slow burn as spice doesn't start until past 75% but once it starts.... wowza 🔥 a heads up is there is a huge cliff hanger so reader beware lol

Wanted to love it, but didn't

I usually really enjoy dystopian storylines, and add in a reverse harem? Should be right up my ally. Sadly, this story had so many holes in it, the editing was atrocious and the author obviously never researched some of the things they used. If there are more, I really hope the author does a better job.
