Postboxes Through Six Reigns

Rate this book
POSTBOXES THROUGH SIX REIGNS is best viewed in colour because it features illustrations of the varying types of post box―PILLAR BOX, WALL BOX, LUDLOW BOX and LAMP BOX―through all six reigns from Queen Victoria to the present day. A short history of the postbox is followed by details of the four types. There is then a section devoted to each monarch, giving―where possible―an example of each of the four types for every reign. The second part of the book covers RARE and UNUSUAL POSTBOXES including abandoned sub-post offices. Of interest too are the postboxes being swallowed by trees, 2 wooden boxes, and a unique one in London with ciphers of both Victoria and Edward VII. Profusely illustrated in colour with examples from nine counties in the south of England (including London), together with rare Edward VIII examples and the unique Edward VIII wall box in Suffolk. Recommended as a comprehensive introduction to these distinctive examples of street furniture which have been a part of British life for over a century and a half.
