Cosmic Judaism: Uniting Judaism and Science to Enlighten Our Lives and the World

Rate this book
Jews perceive our age-old mission to be a “Light Unto the Nations,” symbolized by the Sabbath candles and the Eternal Light, helping to lead the world out of darkness. Similarly, science rightly sees itself as a “Candle in the Dark.” But neither science nor religion, acting alone, can hold a candle to both realms working together as “Candles in the Dark” to advance humanity, spread truth, and improve the well-being of our species.

To deal with the daunting challenges in the world today, the light of reason and love (Emeth va-Tzedek) must work synergistically so that people of all faiths, creeds, and backgrounds—religious and non- religious—can join forces and cooperate in this noble endeavor.

As Carl Sagan so eloquently observed, and as Albert Einstein so beautifully

“Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind.”
—Albert Einstein

I am Jewish and a physician so I thought this book sounded like it would be an interesting exploration of science and religion. It actually starts out that way. The author tries to make the argument that God is not the supernatural personal God of the Bible but is a "creative force" that is not "super"natural but somehow part of nature itself. He frequently quotes Einstein and Sagan to make his point.

I didn't understand how God could be the creative force of nature but not be above and beyond it. Also, he really shouldn't consider himself a rabbi - he's more of a philosopher. His silly use of puns also made it hard to take him seriously.

But then I had to stop reading about halfway thru the book as he went off the rails into a political diatribe. I sort of knew his politics from the previous pages, but then he descended into full blown Trump Derangement Syndrome.

That was it for me. Maybe he should run for office.

Cosmic Judaism is a righteous path

I love my Judaism, and I love science (a PhD nerd), and one path to marry the two seems like a match made in heaven. A wonderful read.
