4 Volumes for a single offering! Aliens ripped a hole above Earth, arriving with a massive space station. I sorta figured we'd be enslaved to fight in their wars or exterminated for our resources. Nope. The hip-high Iglax were merchants with ugly squished faces and thick blue fur. While they weren't much to look at, they sure did have some wonderous technology.
Humanity bent over backwards to appease our new merchant overlords. The boorish aliens wanted cheap labor for precious metals, and honestly, I didn't blame anyone for their hunger to be among the stars.
For certain rare metals or special gems, they'd trade tech we could only fathom as magic. Me, I pawned a few things, made some money, then hunkered down to study to prove my worth.
The aliens tested humans on an individual basis for miner rentals. Do well on your pilot test, get a spaceship, sign up with a corp, and you can mine the belt. For a puddle-jumper pilot like me, yeah, I was so interested I became obsessed. When I finally tested, I performed above and beyond, being offered a contract for some better than a miner - Earth's First Starfighter.
I quit on page 44. I was not liking the book and was waiting for something over the top to be the final straw. On page 44, I got it when the MC has to give the boys sperm so they could impregnate earth women coming to them with fertility problems.
The reason I wasn't enjoying the book to begin with were 1. Author claims MC is from Tennessee and has him speaking some British derivative. 2. You know how you can tell an author is writing about something they know nothing about? Like a horse riding character jumping over the head of their house for some reason. The author is this way with piloting and the military. At no time would a pilot get instructions over comms and reply with "OK". At no time would an admiral radio a pilot that is supposedly under his control and ask him what he is going to do.
This book came off like a teenager wrote this, especially with how the characters spoke.
When I picked up this omnibus set, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it... but like Gravedigger 1, I took a chance. I found a storyline I loved, and aside from some minor editing issues, I had no issues devouring the set cover to cover.
