To Rule in a Turbulent World : 乱世为王 #1

To Rule in a Turbulent World Vol.1

Rate this book
◆Loosely based on the history of Song Dynasty, To Rule in a Turbulent World tells the story of You Miao—the dandy son of a merchant who climbed his way to the very top from rock bottom. We witness the history of a nation, from prosperity to decline, to a new order.

◆Peace, war, internal strife; You Miao has lived through it all—but not without his loyal Quanrong slave-turned-husband, Li Zhifeng. Theirs is a story of undying devotion that combats racial boundaries in a time when the ethnic tribes of the north clashed with the Han empire. Together, they ruled the world! (Behind the scenes, of course.)

◆As friends, as foes, as friends turned foes and foes turned friends, the epic continues its song, and the most beautiful moonlight of the great desert is yet to come...

DNF 70%.

I'm feeling very angry and confused about the overwhelming praise that this Danmei novel receives. It's difficult for me to reconcile my thoughts, especially when it comes to the elements that are touted as strengths of the story.

Let’s start with the plot, which is the sole aspect I found remotely enjoyable. This novel is centered around political intrigue, a genre I absolutely adore, and it also weaves in a slice-of-life element. The political machinations are engaging and well-crafted, providing a solid framework that could have served as the foundation for an excellent story. Honestly, if the characters had been more tolerable, I believe I would have genuinely enjoyed reading it.

Now, moving on to the characters, which is where my disappointment truly deepens. You Miao, the protagonist, comes off as exceedingly unlikable from the very beginning. He strikes me as spoiled and foolish, displaying a troubling lack of concern for those around him. There is some character development throughout the story, yes, but even that did not significantly improve my feelings toward him. Numerous aspects of his personality raised red flags.

Then there’s the male lead, Li Zhifeng. Regrettably, he remains largely undeveloped in this volume, leaving me with little to latch onto or understand about his character. I felt as though I barely knew anything about him, which was frustrating—especially given that he plays such a pivotal role in You Miao's life.

Next, let’s dive into the romance, which many readers laud as healthy and sweet. I genuinely find myself wanting to pose a question: where is this so-called healthiness? To begin with, the relationship starts off with a master-slave dynamic, which is, to me, a significant red flag. Admittedly, this dynamic doesn’t last long, but it undeniably influences how I perceive their relationship. You Miao treats Li Zhifeng almost like a pet he rescued but later grew bored with. There’s a moment that particularly disturbs me: You Miao allows a friend to beat Li Zhifeng, which I find deeply troubling and reflects poorly on You Miao's character.

The initial phase of a relationship is critical; it lays the groundwork for future interactions and perceptions, and in this case, it felt fundamentally flawed. Li Zhifeng expresses profound gratitude to You Miao for saving him, but I couldn’t help but question the genuineness of this gratitude. Did he truly receive better treatment than he did under his previous master? I struggled to understand why I was supposed to commend You Miao solely for not inflicting physical harm. The way the author developed their relationship left a sour taste in my mouth.

Furthermore, the intimate scene is another point of contention for me. Li Zhifeng is initially a bed slave—a role that complicates the matter of consent. When they finally come together intimately, Li Zhifeng's agreement feels more like an obligation rather than a genuine desire. He is still under the influence of his debt to You Miao and he is still under the contract, which clouds his consent. Additionally, You Miao wanted to be intimate with him just so he could experience being with a man, and that began one of the reasons he saved him was just the cherry on the cake. While I acknowledge that the intimate scene itself was well-written, I couldn't shake the discomfort of viewing it through the lens of their prior master-slave relationship.

Does their relationship eventually evolve into a healthier one? Yes, it does, but by that time, my interest had completely waned. I found myself wishing for a tragic end for all the characters rather than a happy resolution.

In conclusion, I am deeply disappointed that I did not fall in love with this novel as I had initially hoped. Based on the glowing reviews I read before picking it up, I truly believed I would be rating it five stars. Instead, I am left feeling frustrated and disillusioned.

4,5 'Politics and agriculture' stars

I'm so glad I managed to persuade myself that this book is worth the price (+shipping) becuase I loved it! And now I'm even more excited to read more of Fei Tian's books - I already know that Legend of Exorcism and Dinghai Fusheng Records must be amazing as well.

vol-1

Also, I really like the cover + the cover art, and it's a very interesting solution with the cover flap(?), however it's so inconvinient to actually hold the book in hands, and damaging to the book itself. Well, at least I'm not salty about getting the book with damaged cover anymore; now it's creased anyway, heh. But it still looks good on the shelf, so that's that.

Now, let's get to the story. As I already implied at the rating, there's a lot of politics, since the setting is historical, and if QJJ is obsessed with grain, then LSWW has an obsession with tea and agriculture. It's not as hard to follow but the plot is definitely plotting. We haven't yet met that many charachters but I think that the number of important figures will increase in the following volumes. So far, the stars of this book were undoubtedly the main couple - You Miao and Li Zhifeng.

At first, I was worried that You Miao would get on my nerves too much. He starts as very immature, spoiled and annoyingly privileged, but managed to turn himself into a loveable protagonist. I think his charachter development is really well done. He grows as a person - from a bratty teenager to a young adult, who has been shaped by events he witnessed or be a part of, and by people he met on the way. He matures a lot, taking on adult responsibilities, but at the same time he still sometimes often acts like a kid. I mean, he's still... what 15? 16?, so I think it feels more realistic that way. Afterall, he has been living quite a carefree life, so it's kind of logical for him to be childlish, when there's no need to be serious.

Gif by guzufuren

As for Li Zhifeng, I practically adopted him on the first page he appeard because I'm predictable and am never able to resist half-dead poor little meow meows. He starts the story as a slave that You Miao buys but despite his slave status, I never really got a feeling that they would be truly unequal. At first, it seems that he has less charachter development than You Miao because we are very rarely privy to his thoughts and he has quite guareded personality but it's an interesting journey of his self-discovery. He was taken prisoner when he was 15, I think??, so he has a lot of catching up to do, now that he's finally a free man. I can't wait for him to get his whole martial strength back and discover what he wants in his life (no, being You Miao's servant forever doesn't count, come on, it's a waste of talent, considering his kill count has been over hundred before his capture).

Gif by catronac7

They are both very interesting individuals but they truly shine, when they are together. As I already said despite their owner-slave relationship they had at first, they stand on pretty much even ground. First, because You Miao doesn't really want Li Zhifeng as his slave, and doesn't treat him cruely. Also, he start thinking very quickly how to set him free. And second, You Miao might have status and power over him, but Li Zhifeng is older and more experienced in... well, mostly everything.

(Apparently, this has a manhua, and why I didn't know about this sooner?? Also, I only found this one picture, so I'm off to investigate more, when I'll have time.)

"I won't die," Li Zhifeng spoke up. "You can relax and go to sleep."
You Miao nodded. As he trekked back to bed, he heard Li Zhifeng add, "I will never forget that you saved my life."
You Miao grinned in response. "As long as you don't die, you'll be doing me a favor," he said.

Li Zhifeng opened his eyes weakly. He moved his lips, but no words came out. You Miao lifted a piece of jade from around his neck, then leaned down to tie the pendant around Li Zhifeng's neck.
"This is the life-protection charm my mom gave me," You Miao said. "I'll lend it to you now."

They start their relationship with a BANG - pun totally intended - because they have sex, when they've barley known each other for a few days. You Miao decides to take advantage of Li Zhifeng being a sex slave to have his first time with a man (or first time in general, I wasn't sure). We can debate consent here because You Miao is in position of power, therefore making Li Zhifeng unable to say no. However, we've seen Zhifeng be very rebelious, when he wants to be, and he doesn't seem repulsed by it. Also, it's very apparent from their first sexual interaction that he doesn't plan to let himself be bullied by You Miao in any way.

"Normally, I listen to you,' Li Zhifeng said. "But in bed, you have to listen to me."
"Fine by me," You Miao agreed. "It's not like I know anything anyway."
Li Zhifeng narrowed his eyes and stared at You Miao for a moment before he finally gave a curt nod.

Gif by guzufuren

Left in only his underclotches, You Miao lay down on the bed and scooted closer.
"Don't forget, you have to listen to me in bed," Li Zhifeng remined him.
You Miao breathed an "mn" in reply.

I decided to be a tease for a change and left all the good parts out but this scene was easily the smuttiest danmei smut I've read so far. It's explicit and defintely not shy about various kinks - seriously, I think Li Zhifeng and You Miao surpassed Xiao Chiye and Shen Zechuan in one single night considering the number of kinks - but it's true I haven't finished QJJ yet and I'm sure cezhou are not done with showing off 😏

It's hard to say when or maybe even if You Miao and Li Zhifeng get together? (What is their ship name???) Definiteley, there's nothing offical yet. And I think it's more like they both ends up alone and kind of discarded, so they stick together because of that.

"Why did you come back?" asked an exhausted You Miao.
The wind howled and the snow fell with furious abandon, but the snowflakes were gentle when they drifted onto their bodies. Li Zhifeng answered him in a low voice.
"I missed you."

Gif by laura

The most quoteable scene of first vol. Just look at them 🥰 I know, it's not love yet, but this moment happens when You Miao just let Li Zhifeng free, and he still comes back for You Miao instead of going home or going anywhere else he wants. It's probably because You Miao has been the first person in years to treat him as a human, and he got attached. I'm looking forward for their feelings to progress into something more, but even for now, they are very adorable together.

Li Zhifeng whispered into You Miao's ear, his hand interlocked with You Miao's, "Sleepy?"
"No." You Miao was too lazy to even lift his eyelids. "Hold me tighter."
Li Zhifeng hugged him close and brushed his lips over You Miao's brows, pressing small kisses to his eyes. You Miao felt nothing but warmth and comfort.
With his eyes still closed, he asked, "You bought me something fun?"
"You'll see when we get back," Li Zhifeng whispered into his ear.

Gif by ran-and-dom

I just love how they both act like an old married couple already without even acknowledging their relationship yet. They are basically together 24/7, they cuddle all the time AND in front of everyone, they are incapable of not touching each other every few moments, they sleep together, and suprisingly, only occasionally have sex. It's kind of funny becuase You Miao's first serious sexual encounter has been getting fucked for a whole night, in various positions, while being gagged and brought to tears by overstimulation among other things. And then the next day, he goes on with his life, like that is totally normal, and then proceeds to act all giggly and blushing when Li Zhifeng just kisses him. They are perfect together!

"Where have you been?"
Li Zhifeng handed him a paper package. "Went to buy you something fun."
"M'kay. Let's go," You Miao said.
Now the cousins were hooting harder with laughter.
"It's like he's talking to his little wife."
"Yeah, what a happy couple."

Gif by captnswilson

And the best part of their non-relationship(?) is how everyone agrees they are basically married and all, despite oficially being master and servant, I guess. They are literally the defintion of 'and they were very good friends' *wink wink*

There are some side charachters I'm very intrigued by, but I think they will have to wait for the next volume, which is apparently "farm arc". I admit, I'm a little worried what hororros awaits us, if we get domestic bliss so soon 😅

5 juicy stars baby! It's just the perfect novel for me. A lot of things happen in the novel, but at its core it tells the story of one spoiled young master rising to glory. I really love stories like this, especially when they are superbly written and translated.
If you liked QJJ, then you will definitely like this one. There are some parallels between Shen Lanzhou and You Miao, in fact. Both are highly intelligent and capable, both have suffered and were wronged at some points of their life, both have incredibly devoted MLs. You Miao can't fight though unless it's bed fighting. :D
Also Via Lactea needs to hurry up with the rest of the volumes already.

I bought this book knowing absolutely nothing about the reviews or the translation quality and I absolutely LOVED it. I’m a sucker for the **I’ve lost everything and have to start over story** so I was all in from the first few chapters. FYI there is 🌶️ early in the book however that is a NOT a main plot point or the focus of the rest of the book. Very little angst (but it’s definitely there) in this vol but I feel like it’s setting the stage for pain to come in the future.

The MC (You Miao) was super easy to fall in love with and the ML (Li Zhifeng) is the perfect husband 🥰.

I get Puqi Shrine vibes- it’s not much but it’s ours and we will make it a home 🥰🥰🥰

Character development was fun- not quite a Mary Sue but…. things work out for him quite a bit 🤣 Our boy does learn a lot and grow using his knowledge and skills to make his own way. I’m excited to see where this story goes!

✔️Court politics
✔️Historical fiction
✔️Family drama
✔️Golden retriever MC, loyal protector ML

Possible TW:
Age gap 15/22
Seemingly weird slave-owner relationship but that’s not really how it is 😬
Racism/classism- typical shit with rich vs poor 😡

This was a richly layered blend of politics, power, and deeply tender romance. At the heart of it is You Miao—a clever, mischievous, and utterly lovable protagonist who lights up every scene he’s in. His dynamic with the steadfast and quietly intense Li Zhifeng evolves from a harsh beginning into a beautifully intimate partnership that’s equal parts sweet, funny, and emotionally grounding.

The book skillfully weaves together faster-paced action with thoughtful political developments, especially in the second half where the focus on rebuilding and estate life allows the central relationship to bloom in earnest. Themes of power imbalance and moral complexity—especially around servitude—are handled with nuance, eventually giving way to a deeply affectionate companionship. You Miao’s teasing, the cousins’ commentary, and all the flirty blushes add a joyful charm that’s impossible to resist.

Rather than ending on a cliffhanger or tragedy, the story offers a rare kind of warmth and hope that leaves you glowing and craving more. It’s the kind of novel that makes you fall in love with its characters and grateful for every quiet, domestic moment they get to share.

(screaming into my pillow) it is so good!!!!

okay not going to lie - i was little bored during arc 1 and only reason why i pushed through is bc of my friends. but arc 2?! arc 2 is farming/domestic arc and i sold my soul for this volume. so lovely, cozy, hot and actually good plot.
bonus part is the fact that so far the political element of the story is bearable for my smol brain (i know it will lean more into it but maybe i can grow some brain or something).

1000000/10, please read it if you think this is your type of tea (wink wink).

Picked this book up from the library new purchases since I've enjoyed translated danmei titles in the past. In To Rule in a Turbulent World, spoiled merchant's son You Miao has the trajectory of his pampered court life changed when he buys foreign slave Li Zhifeng on an impulse. From trouble on a trip to the northern border to inheritance squabbles with his father, You Miao sails through it all with the help of Li Zhifeng.

I've had fun reading pretty much every danmei I've picked up so far, and this book was no exception. You Miao is a horrid child of fifteen (affectionate), and he manages to be a strong enough personality to be an interesting character without being completely insufferable. Yes, he did spend his time at court squandering money like water instead of studying, but he has a shrewd eye for favor trading and has a good instinct for when to be generous. You can tell that his cleverness in combination with his exquisite eyebrows are going to have a devastating effect on court in a few years. But right now he's terribly fifteen, which is particularly noticeable in his impractical get rich quick daydreams and arguments with his father (heavy overtones of JAIL for father!!! For ten thousand years!!).

The translation is very smooth and natural-feeling overall. I was highly entertained by the decision to have You Miao and his friends address each other as "bro." A touch incongruous for the Song Dynasty, but it lends a rather fitting frat bro vibe to the whole thing. I would have appreciated a bit of a pronunciation guide, but the footnotes gave about the right level of help with cultural elements. Although there's nothing like going through the elaborate procedure of accessing an ebook footnote for "magnificent ten dragons pill" etc only to find that the translator has noted that the author made up this term to sound cool. I knew that.

I wasn't entirely convinced by the depiction of Li Zhifeng and his background, but it wasn't entirely unsalvageable. Yes, he's from a tribe of "barbarians" dressed in wolf skins who live beyond the Wall, have the strength of ten men, and are forced to take a weakening poison to prevent them from being a danger to poor helpless Han Chinese. Okay, Li Zhifeng is almost entirely silent, apparently completely devoted, and once ran one hundred and sixty miles in sixteen hours.* While carrying an adult human for eight of those. But I have faith that the racism is bad arc is going to come into play at some time in the future.

An absolute souffle of a novel. I've already got the second volume lined up, and it's going to be painful waiting for the third volume, if it's even going to be released in ebook. Recommended if you already like danmei, or if your taste in romance novels runs to A Taste of Gold and Iron, Winter's Orbit, or Captive Prince.

*Actually I don't think this one can be chalked up to the author, I strongly suspect the translator swapped miles for li (a much smaller unit of distance) without changing the number.

Just what I like: governing over a farm, slowly building out infrastructure, repairing the house and expanding influence over the region.

In the beginning I was worried the protagonist would be carried by the help of other people, but he does good work and capitalizes well on his strengths (aka sucking up to people).

Surprisingly, the sex scenes are also well written and hot, so all in all great beginning.

4.75 / 5: "Mountains never age, rivers never dry; by luck, we shall meet again."

screammmmmm this really was the best impulse read i've had in forever, i have no regrets.

such a comforting story with incredible character development for just the first volume alone, and there's still so much more promised to come!! i'm really looking forward to it :')

in just the first volume, there’s quite a lot of development seen in you miao’s character, which made for a really interesting reading experience. he has a lot of insight when it comes to how he interacts with other characters and yet, he's also prone to being very lazy and quick to spend his money when we first meet him. his narration reminded me a lot of prince huai from da feng gua guo's the imperial uncle and song yao from the same author's other work, peach blossom debt. this made me love him even more as what all these three characters share in common is this fascinating charm that makes the situations they're thrust into more enlightening. there's this wit that carries the story and makes it feel much lighter, yet there's this an observant eye they harbor that makes them smarter than they may appear.

when circumstances push you miao to use that eye to his benefit, he really starts standing up to his potential as he now has to own up to his responsibilities once the details of his family's hierarchy are shaken up. he ends up spewing out a lot of knowledge, regarding the networks that come with being from a merchant family and how to take care of the fields your business is profiting from. and he has still so much more to learn.

there’s something really cozy in the atmosphere around the second arc of the story, which explains why i can describe this volume to be so relaxing. the scenery at the estate you miao and li zhifeng move into is described so beautifully, with such a wide landscape, it adds to the soft setting of the story. you miao & li zhifeng’s dynamic is another reason to what felt so comforting about the narrative. there’s this ease between them in communication where they’re always in line with each other, no matter the power imbalance that was present at first. while li zhifeng is significantly older than you miao and you miao was li zhifeng’s master for a short period of time, there’s this natural chemistry that makes it so that one doesn’t ever seem to overpower the other much.

i grew really obsessed with them pretty quickly for that, and already i can see what readers on novel updates meant when li zhifeng becomes one of the top contenders for best husband of the year; he's so so so attentive to you miao, it's sweet as hell. there's something about the danmei genre in general that just feels so different to what i've experienced in others; only here, could i find a relationship dynamic like you miao & li zhifeng's to be so strange, yet really soft and compelling....

the story in general is just so promising!! i can’t wait for the next volume, as there’s so much planning ahead for you miao as he takes on this estate that was passed to him from his mother. stakes are apparently supposed to get higher in this particular period of ancient China, with more characters to be introduced, and more depth added to the developing romance between you miao and li zhifeng.

and it's all such a good time. i hope that the time frame up until the next volume is much shorter than i fear; i need more of this story.

content warnings:

major: sexual content, and adult/minor relationship
moderate: slavery, torture, racism, kidnapping, descriptions of violence, and injury/injury detail
minor: past death of a parent, and murder

Excellent!
In the past I avoided Slice of Life books, but was absolutely blown away by how fulfilling it is to read.
Although the relationship is Master/Slave, it doesn't feel abusive or terrible. They are a great pair and I can't wait to see their relationship grow in book 2.

Made me stay up to 3am reading. Wasn’t sure how I felt about the main protagonist at first because he’s so different morally. I know that he’s like 15 but he is just a fleas ball type of character. I knew he was smart and there’s gonna be more to him, but he was so like different from what I’ve read before so I didn’t know what to feel about it but absolutely one of the best character arts and journey from a character who doesn’t really care about anything just wants to leisurely and lazily spend all of his money on ridiculous things to finding out that he hast to work from the bottom up was so nice and the love and devotion between him and the love and interest in this one is just perfection. Also the spiciest most detailed scenes in a Danmei that I’ve read in a while.

Li zhifeng doesn’t speak a lot. We don’t get a lot from his perspective, but like the little blushes how he initiates like kissing and his loyalty that scene where he’s just running up and down the town hill just to find a doctor for the protagonist just shows us how much loyalty it’s so beautiful.

I just really love how the protagonist is very business savvy very smart, and eventually, his charms works on like everybody he meets through earnestly literally from dirt and from having nothing at all to making his own like water wheel for the system, the little village, his mother gave him it’s so impressive and honestly honestly, I never even knew this was a slice of life. I thought it was more like politically heavy, but it is not at least not the first book obviously there’s hints that there’s so much more going on .

Intrigued with every single character in this book and interactions with protagonist it’s perfection
I’m not a poems or whimsical appreciator when it comes to writing because sometimes I’m just like over it it’s too much or it’s too cheesy or I just don’t get it but I feel like it works here. It supports the evidence that the male is very smart and I can’t believe he’s only like 15 so much in this book , it feels like a lot like every time he got angry with the whole situation with his family. I was really relating to him. He is so similar to the untamed main character goofy, but like smart and loyal on the inside.

3.5* The first 2 arcs are rather slow and more slice of life but knowing there are 5 more volumes - and knowing Feitian - there's a lot of potential here that I'm sure will be explored as the story progresses and delves further into court politics.

The story aside, however, while the book's design is beautiful - really, the physical book is gorgeous and the preorder freebies were lovely too - the translation and editing leave much to be desired.

This was very enjoyable for me. I really like the political storyline but it’s also got some slice of life in there as well.

Seeing You Miao being thrown into a situation where he’s no longer pampered and spending money frivolously, and being forced to open his eyes to the fact he no longer will be spoiled was good enjoyable to watch. He goes through quite a bit of character growth in a short time.

Li Zhifeng is also a character I enjoy reading about. Going from a bedslave on the brink of death to a genuine protector and brother was also enjoyable. You can see the way his devotion is reflected as the story goes. Granted, You Miao bought him for the wrong reasons, but it ended up being one of the best things he ever did. “This guy ain’t bad. I literally bought treasure for only two hundred and fifty silver”

I like seeing their relationship progress into something more than just ‘devotion as repayment for getting me out of a life or death situation’. It’s turning into something more and you can see it as the story progresses.

I noticed too that even though You Miao has always been a spoiled child, he’s also quite smart and does have the potential his father was disappointed about him ‘not’ having.
I think he does have that potential but due to his upbringing of being neglected by his father after his mother’s passing and being given riches instead of love and care, his potential was forcibly shut away.

Watching him transform the Riverwave Estate is super fun to me. Idk maybe it’s the ‘boringness’ of having him worry about money and where it’s being spent or the plans he’s putting into place to make Riverwave Estate livable and successful, but I was super enjoying this section of the book.

Either way I liked this a lot and I already got the rest of the books available on ebook.

NON-SPOILER SECTION:
I liked it, but idk if I’d recommend it. Some of the societal issues covered in the book were dealt with in a nuanced way but also in a way that was slightly too surface level at the same time. I wanted it to go deeper. Though Ik this is only the first book in the series, so it may be dealt with more thoroughly later on.

I also loved how Chinese culture and literature was interwoven into the story.

Trigger warnings: slavery, rape of enslaved persons (between main character and love interest—though not depicted as rape, but it definitely is considering one OWNS the other), murder, violence against enslaved persons, explicit sex, xenophobia, torture, illness

SPOILER SECTION:

More specific context on first sex scene: Their first sexual encounter was rape-y considering that You Miao literally owned Li Zhifeng at that time. Though it can be noted that Li Zhifeng didn’t hesitate to try fight back against Li Yan in spite of their dynamic, so despite this being rape in the real world, it reads on page as more dubiously consensual (which isn’t great). And I don’t think Li Zhifeng would view it as rape bc he was “in charge” and they have mutual affection towards one another but still. Afterwards, You Miao says that he felt like Li Zhifeng was essentially putting on a mask when having sex with him and that the Li Zhifeng outside of sexual situations was the “real him”, which shows that he has become more conscious to this imbalance and how it makes it necessary for Li Zhifeng to act in certain ways.

Also You Hange I love you, though why can’t he read? It seems like they could have afforded it with the gold You Dechuan gifted him? It almost seems like a plot hole?

loved it, such a great first volume, excited to start book 2. I literally couldn’t put the book down and was reading it at any chance i got. plot started to slow down/dragged a bit towards the end but regardless was enjoyable. excited to see how the plot will advance in the next volume.

perfect amount of angst, story and romance. highly recommend!

3.5 stars. I liked the descriptions of all the things the MCs were doing to renovate the new place. Didn’t really like the relationship, it felt a bit wooden, but I want to read more about how they’ll renovate the place, so I’m definitely reading on!

This series deserves way more attention — easily my favorite danmei and I'm being so serious! To Rule in a Turbulent World is such a well-written and engaging story. It’s the perfect mix of political intrigue and slice-of-life moments. The world feels real and grounded, with just enough tension to keep you hooked without overwhelming the more quiet, emotional beats.

You Miao and Li Zhifeng are both incredibly lovable characters, and their relationship is one of the most beautiful and natural I’ve read. They feel like real people — flawed, funny, caring — and watching their connection grow felt so genuine and satisfying.

I honestly don’t know why more people aren’t talking about this book. It’s thoughtful, well-paced, and emotionally rich without being over the top. If you’re into danmei, or just want a story that balances politics, character growth, and emotional depth, this is absolutely worth your time!

"I'm just going to carve out a good life for myself, with good food and good drinks. She wants me down in the dumps, well, I'll do the exact opposite. I'm going to live my best life, and there's no better revenge than that."

description

Before we get into it, let me just say—this cover is absolutely chef’s kiss! It’s gorgeous and fits the vibe of the book perfectly. I didn’t even bother trying to add this alternate cover to Goodreads because, let’s be real, every time I’ve tried with other Via Lactea books, it’s been shot down. Even when they’re from official social media! Sigh. These beauties deserve their time to shine.

Now, onto the book itself—wow. This was a ride. From page one, I was hooked. Political intrigue? Check. Emotional turmoil? Check. Steamy moments right out of the gate? Oh, double check! I wasn’t ready for the spice, but it definitely kept me turning pages.

The world-building pulls you in instantly, and the characters? Layers upon layers of complexity, just how I like them. The tension—both in the political scheming and the romantic dynamics—was off the charts. Every twist had me gasping, and I couldn’t put it down even when I knew I really should get some sleep.

If you’re into drama, intrigue, and a dash of steamy chaos, this book is calling your name. It’s the perfect start to a series that’s going to wreck me in the best way, and I’m already itching for the next volume!
