"Majoring in Motherhood" is hilarious and filled with laugh-out-loud moments that all moms can relate to. Emily’s relatable and conversational writing does a great job of pointing our mama hearts to Christ. The book flows beautifully, using a school subject analogy for each chapter as we journey through lessons in motherhood. This clever approach makes it an easy read. If you're a mom needing some encouragement, this book is perfect. It was a timely read for me!

Favorite section:
(Talking about Psalm 46)
These first few verses of the psalm describe complete and utter chaos: mountains moving and trembling, the earth literally falling apart. While there may not be any actual mountains moving during days at home with little children, it can feel just as chaotic. If I had to rewrite these verses to describe motherhood, they would go something like this:

God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the toys scatter, though the laundry mountains tower,
though the children scream and cry,
though we sigh and grow weary of our tasks.

Why will we not fear? Because God is our help -
our very present help — our refuge and strength.
And where is our help? Not outside of trouble and chaos, but in it.

This short but sweet and relatable book on mothering is a must read for moms in any stage of parenting. In the trenches? This book will encourage and remind you of your purpose. A new mother? This book will prepare and enlighten you on what to expect. Veteran mother or kids already grown? This is the perfect book to keep extra copies of to bless a mama in her mothering ministry years.

This book was super fun to read and Emily Schuch is quite the comedian! She holds nothing back and thank goodness for her honesty; sometimes us moms just need to hear it how it really is! You’ll link arms with Emily as she guides readers through a crash course in all the subjects of mothering.

With chapter titles like:

•Math: Exponential Laundry, Divided Sleep, Multiplied Love

•Language Skills: Toddler-ese and the Vocabulary of Sacrifice

•Phys Ed: Maternal Olympics, Hitting Our Limits, Finding True Strength

•Chemistry: Becoming the Nucleus, Fighting Entropy, Searching for Lasting Peace

You’ll also find questions at the end of each chapter for deeper reflection and study. Emily truly points mothers to Christ and the Bible again and again. You’ll find refreshment and a renewed purpose and vision in your high calling of motherhood!

Thank you to @cruciformpress and @emilysschuch for a gifted copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

As Emily references Samuel Johnson so fittingly, “…people need reminding more than instructing.” This book is full of excellent reminders for moms who love the Lord! I found Emily down to earth, and her humorous delivery reminds the reader not to take themselves too seriously, while simultaneously shining the spotlight on how important the role of “mom” is.

I personally am no longer in the “little years” but still found encouragement in the timeless reminders of my purpose, and the Savior who walks with me, in my motherhood of slightly older kids. I would highly recommend (and will be gifting) this book to younger moms who are in “the trenches” and may need a lighthearted, easy read full of rich encouragement and truths.

Emily is smart, funny, and vulnerable. Being a mom is tough, but Jesus walks with us through it. It's the "hardest, messiest, most glorious job in the world". Her words encouraged my soul and touched my heart.

“Motherhood has stretched me and pushed me in so many ways. Currently, I’m seven years in, far from any kind of expertise or offers of a professorship, though I do feel like I have learned a few things. Motherhood has taught me so much about myself and about God. In this book, I have collected those lessons. I’ve tried to give you big doses of Jesus along with some humor because –let’s be honest—some days, the only thing that can help us tread the fine line between sanity and insanity is a good laugh at the regular absurdities of life with small children. I’ve tried to make it fairly short and, hopefully, sweet because I know you hardly have time to read it, just like I hardly had time to write it. Maybe we can’t call it a motherhood degree, but perhaps a kind of crash course—one that will at least get you through your final exams.
So, class. Let’s begin.”
– Emily Schuch, Majoring in Motherhood

WHAT I LOVED: Everything! On day two of reading, I messaged Emily, “Oh my heart. I’m only 32 pages in and I believe this is the most relatable, funny, and heartwarming book on motherhood I have ever read. I don’t want to put it down, soo good! 🥰😂💛” And I continue to stand by that. I have read some wonderful books on motherhood, but none quite like this—none so creative and written with such a captivating blend of relatable stories, humor, wit, and biblical truths that both convict and encourage.

WHO IS THIS FOR: Any mom, but moms of young children will be especially blessed.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: I loved it! This was a timely read and one that I looked forward to reading every morning as part of my quiet time, and one that I found myself reflecting on and being encouraged by throughout the day. Highly recommend!

Thank you to Emily Schuch for this #gifted book!*

Title: Majoring in Motherhood
Author: Emily Schuch
Genre: Nonfiction/Christian Living

Review: “…Glorifying God might be less about doing adventurous and remarkable things and more about being faithful in the humble and ordinary seasons of life that not many see.” Majoring in Motherhood is a wonderful intro to biblical motherhood. It’s basically biblical mom life 101! In it, Emily Schuch explores the different subjects of motherhood such as math, physics, and philosophy. You’ll find a whole lot of humor when it comes to laundry, toddler tantrums, and mom life. But you’ll also find conviction and encouragement and a whole lot of grace. Each chapter is filled with scripture and concludes with three thought provoking questions or action steps. Emily does a wonderful job of packing these short and sweet pages with spiritual truth!

Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

(Thank you to the author and to Cruciform Press for my gifted copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

A favorite quote: “Every believer stands on a foundation laid by someone else. Every warrior for the kingdom first heard the gospel from someone else. Our children first hear it from us. What a privilege. What a vision…”

This short book was so funny and so relatable, all while being so full of truth. I loved the way that the chapters were organized into subjects, like math and physics. The book covers so many topics and offers wise and biblical encouragement, especially for mamas in the little years.

Highly recommend!

I absolutely LOVED reading this book! Right when I started reading it, I was thinking to myself, "If she only lived close to me!" Her humor in this book had me laughing out loud! If you haven't read it yet, I won't spoil it.. but keep an eye out for the gummy vitamin part! 😆

Her biblical encouragements and reminders are so needed in our culture.

Emily, maybe someday we will meet up and get a coffee together in our stretchy (very comfortable) pants! And you can tell me all the science stuff that is way over my head. But most of all, I'd be excited to talk about our great Savior! ♥️

I finished this book while on maternity leave with my 3rd daughter. It was such a great reminder of the “why” of motherhood and how it can feel monotonous in the trenches of the day to day but that every humble moment that we lay down our will for others, specifically our kids, is a picture of the gospel. Emily doesn’t a great job of keeping it light and funny with relatable stories and lessons, but she gracefully ties it back to the most important truths of the gospel. I highly recommend it for any moms or soon to be moms.

The intended audience seems to be new moms, and there was not a lot that was “new” to me (although a lot very familiar!), but it was a quick lighthearted encouraging read.
