Nicole Murphy is a doormat who never tells people how she really feels. Her pushy best friend thinks she's being helpful by making Nicole's wedding decisions, but Nicole wants her to stay out of it. Her fiancé thinks his pet names for her are adorable, but Nicole finds them irritating. For the sake of peace and harmony, Nicole keeps every negative emotion bottled up to the point of daily stress headaches.
When a long day leads her to the drugstore for some pain medication, Nicole accepts a complimentary bubble bath sample from a strange little man near the pharmacy. After a relaxing bath and a good night's sleep, Nicole realizes that something is terribly, horribly wrong the next day: she's speaking her mind--literally. Everything she thinks, she speaks, and she can't find a way to stop.
Will Nicole's true colors clash with her present reality? Or will speaking up for herself prove to strengthen her most important relationship?
Valerie Howard Contemporary Women's Christian Fiction "Real women. Tough issues. Powerful God."
Valerie's goal in writing is to bring people closer to Jesus one chapter at a time.
Valerie has been writing stories since she was in second grade when she wrote "The Mystery of the Missing Crayon." She gave up writing mysteries soon after and now concentrates on real-life stories that tackle tough issues such as homelessness, unplanned pregnancy, family tragedy, childhood trauma, foster care, poverty, and terminal cancer. All of her books are filled with the hope and love of Christ and are uplifting and feel-good with happy, though sometimes tearful, endings as her characters overcome their obstacles with God at their side. She also writes biblical non-fiction, indie author non-fiction, children's books, allegorical fiction, and small church Christmas plays. (She's a little obsessed with writing.)
Valerie is a fan of summer, warmth, and flip-flips, so she often wonders why she lives in Maine where she is frozen for the better half of the year. But her amazing husband and adorable sons live there with her, so it's not all bad. She graduated from Bible College with a degree in Bible and Missions a long, long time ago in a state far, far away.
A lovely short story about speaking up. Sometimes we just want to go through life without conflict, so we agree with whoever we happen to be around instead of giving our honest thoughts or opinions. Knowing when to speak and when not to can be a tricky balance, but it's one worth learning how to maintain.
3.7 stars (4/10 hearts). This is a very short work, but thought-provoking. I struggled a little with all the tension in Nicole's story, but I appreciated the message. As a people-pleaser who tends to bury a lot of myself, I found Nicole's situation interesting. What would happen in MY life if people could hear my thoughts?
Valerie Howard has a way with words. In this short story, she manages to make you feel for the main character as well as wonder what would happen if you too were placed in a situation like this -- where everyone can hear your thoughts! Is it even possible to quiet them down? I know mine are swirling all day and all night, even in my sleep. But at the same time her message hits home. I hold my tongue a lot. I don't necessarily say what I think. And this can cause resentment and lots of pain. In a few pages, Valerie was able to make me question my life as well as entertain me. That is truly deserving of 5 stars.
Nicole is a people pleaser. She always goes along with whatever everyone wants and keeps her thoughts to herself. That is until she has a chance encounter and now finds herself saying whatever is on her mind so everyone can hear. Getting all of that out is certainly releasing a lot of stress. But it just may destroy her life at the same time.
This was just a fun little story with plenty of humor and a nice little lesson. We all need to let some of the stress and pressure our before we blow and release it all in an uncontrolled geyser. This is worth a read. It is a good length for reading while in a waiting room or on a break.
This is an entertaining, thought-provoking story. What would happen to your life if, for practically all of your life, you submerged who you were in favor of the person your friends or parents wanted you to be? Where would that lead? For Nicole, it led to a job she hated, a fiance she could barely tolerate and a best friend who had serious boundary issues. How would you resolve that type of conflict? Valerie Howard presents a completely out of the "blue" solution that has hilariously embarrassing results. You'll have to read it for yourself to find out what that means.
Think - This is my first read by this author and I was surprised at how good it was. The main character doesn't have anything going her way and then she takes a bubble bath. Could her life get worse. Entertaining and funny, and lucky for her, nope. 4*
This is cute, quick tale about being trapped in life due to not speaking up, and what happens when you take bubble bath from strangers. (Much better results than you'd expect, surprisingly!)
Well written and edited, I'd look for more from this author.
This story was an enjoyable read and held my interest from beginning to end. Many people have Nicole's problem of trying to please all of her friends, but it is highly unlikely anyone other than Nicole could find the right kind of bubbles to help with her situation. At least I hope not. The truth can set you free, but as Nicole learns, when people know what you are really thinking, things tend to get a little dicey. She certainly deserved better. I really liked the ending. I will purchase more stories from this author.
