Appropriate as a supplement for courses in Elementary and Intermediate Spanish. Lola helps her neighbor Carmela uncover the truth behind the suspicious suicide of Carmela's boyfriend, a millionaire widower.
The detective story itself is pretty good. However, the extensive use of the present perfect tense seemed weird to me. I'm sure it was to create a tone of some sort, but I didn't quite get it even though it was easy to read and understand. Perhaps a more advanced Spanish reader could explain if the present perfect is always used in diaries, or for some literary effect, or what.
If you are studying Spanish these are enjoyable books to add to your reading list. They are relatively short and will challenge you to build your vocabulary. There is no included dictionary so they are well suited to the Kindle, or the Kindle app, and can use your downloaded Spanish-English dictionary. They are written at the A2 level so are appropriate for the advanced beginner.
