Here for the first time in one volume are the first three books of the internationally bestselling THE GHOSTS saga - CHILD OF THE GHOSTS, BLADE OF THE GHOSTS, GHOST IN THE FLAMES, and the bonus short story GHOST ARIA. When her life is torn apart by sorcery and murder, young Caina Amalas joins the Ghosts, the legendary spies and assassins of the Emperor of Nighmar. She learns the secrets of disguise and stealth, of assassination and infiltration, and grows from a frightened child to a Ghost nightfighter, a woman who can face the most terrible foes and prevail through boldness and cunning. But even that might not be enough to save her. For the evil that destroyed her family seeks to devour the entire world...
Standing over six feet tall, USA Today bestselling author Jonathan Moeller has the piercing blue eyes of a Conan of Cimmeria, the bronze-colored hair of a Visigothic warrior-king, and the stern visage of a captain of men, none of which are useful in his career as a computer repairman, alas.
He has written the DEMONSOULED series of sword-and-sorcery novels, and continues to write THE GHOSTS sequence about assassin and spy Caina Amalas, the COMPUTER BEGINNER'S GUIDE series of computer books, and numerous other works. His books have sold over one million copies worldwide.
I read a “sample” of the first chapter of the first book in this set, and was immediately hooked. The child protagonist, so close to her father and so cruelly betrayed by her mother, grabbed my attention, so I had to buy the set. I really enjoyed reading the four books included, watching her grow older, wiser, and stronger, together with her friends. The characters are all well imagined, with story arcs of their own. The dangers and horrors are powerfully portrayed. And the tale of a girl coming into power, coming to terms with all that she’s suffered, is clever and convincing. I would happily read more.
As always, Mr. Moeller has drawn me into another world I don't want to leave. Fortunately he is talented and kind enough to accommodate my insatiable appetite to read on about Caina and her ghost saga.
I found the first couple of chapters of book one not to be that engaging and only mildly interesting, so I was a little concerned. However, from that point on things quickly changed around and I found myself thoroughly engaged with the plot, which (Spoilers) in book one is mostly centred around the training of Caina to become a Ghost. This is something I always find engaging and interesting in any plot, especially as in this case the training takes years to master. The novels see Caina undertaking missions that all end up involving Sorcery of one type or another, which Caina is especially sensitive to following her childhood experience. Each of the three individual novels in the omnibus are well-paced with an interesting and engaging plot. The characters are also very likeable or engaging. There are some darker aspects to the plot to do with necromancy and slavery, which all though they are not related in a detailed manner, are described in enough detail that some people may find them a little unsettling. The one downside to this book, and it is one I have found in quite a few books recently, is the grammatical errors, of which there seemed to be one every other page. A word missing or placed in the wrong sequence. Errors like these pull you out of the story as you have to stop and work out what should have been written, it may only take a split second, but it does get frustrating when there are so many of them.
The author has created an intelligent set of characters in a believable world where sorcery is mostly evil, and is held in check only by the secret work of the emperor's spies, or Ghosts. The main protagonist is a credible heroine, Caina, who rises from the horrors of her kidnapping by a sorceror, to train and dedicate her life to fighting evil as a Ghost. The four books in this series follow her development as a heroic spy, but each book has a complete adventure, while at the same time leading the reader in to the next book. Highly recommended for those who like adventure and a good story line in their fantasy books.
This series was excellent! It takes place in a fantasy time and place, but that does not stop it from being suspenseful and spellbinding. The characters are complex, each one's arc intricate, building to become the avenging protectors of the empire. The main character Caina is born of pain and endures more than seems humanly possible, but it makes her the strong fighter she needs to be to gain victory over the dark forces that threaten, her, her friends, and the empire. The books are filled with exciting battles, mysterious evil sorcerers, as .well as mysteries as deep as the abyss.
It kills me to drop a star from my rating. The tales were solid and engaging. These were the type of stories that you wondered about when you had to put down the book, and couldn’t stop thinking of until you picked it up again. My only frustration is that in many places the wrong word/tense was used and figuring out what was meant became a distraction. Despite my frustration I plan to read the rest of the series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this omnibus collection of the first three books. A bit of action, a bit of magic, some subterfuge, characters that grow. I will read more of the series as well. I would give it 5 stars, I enjoyed it that much. But it gets 4 because of the incredible amount of grammatical errors, wrong words, missing words, extra words and overly poor proofing of the manuscript.
The story started off slowly, and by the end of the third book I knew I would read the whole series. The only downside was the editing. There was misspelling, words out of order, & words left out. Aside from that, I would recommend this series to anyone that loves swords and sorcery.
Downloaded this book quite some time ago then lost the reading bug. Started this trilogy two days ago. I've just finished it and when I finish this review I will be starting the next one. I do love book series' with returning characters. I get really invested. Loved this.
Carina was betrayed by her own mother and bore pain upon pain before she became a ghost. Then she was the greatest ghost of them all and proved women forces to be reckoned with.
I didn't expect this to be so good. I usually get tired of reading a book after book two or three. This has me hooked. It's unpredictable. Detailed.... that you almost feel like you are one with the character.
Sorcery at its worst! I loved all 4 of these books I grew to care very much for Caina and the other Ghosts (the good guys)! It does have pretty graphic violence, so beware.
Four books in one volume is good value and I had never read any of his work so gave them a try. Enjoyed them all, really easy reads with plenty of action, will read more by the author.
Love Ghosts? These book contain those who watch the lands for the Emperor!
She was sold to a sorcerer! Her mother wanted to learn more! Her father had his mind broken by her mother! She was orphan thus begins training! Enjoy this collection! I did!
Not my usual genre and it took me a while to get into it. It did, however get me hooked eventually and I found them an enjoyable read. I didn't reade them one after the other, though. I've been reading other books in between so it took me probably 6 months to finish all three.
Solid characters that you can sympathize with. Assassin's that only kill the bad guys. Mysteries solved and villains slain ... All together a good read.
Great premise, but badly written, repetitive (I swear whole sentences are repeated throughout the book) and absolutely riddled with typos. I won't be continuing with the series.
Step into an Empire where the ongoing battle between good and evil is fought by a young girl /woman who becomes a truly exceptional & extraordinary member of The Ghosts . This group answer only to the emperor and are as far as everyone is concerned a myth. They can be anyone and anywhere & are the protectors of the masses, assassins , eyes & ears of the Emperor. Blood & guts , Betrayal, Bravery, Camaraderie , Friendship , Magic , Necromancy , Revenge, Slavery and more . Enjoy an excellent read .
