This book started out pretty well, despite the translation problems and odd punctuation, and kept my interest with the puzzle being solved. Then I got about 80% through it and it was like a different author took over to finish the book. The ending was rushed like the dude had an assignment he had to turn in. The resolution of the plot was simplistic and, in some parts, nonsensical. The dialog between the characters was sophomoric and it made it really hard to root for anyone. At this point, I just really wanted the story to be over.

Die Biologin Nora Grimm führt Bohrungen in Grönland durch, als sie seltsame Kristallstrukturen entdeckt. Plötzlich schaltet sich das amerikanische Militär ein. Wieso hat das Militär solch ein Interesse an diesen Kristallen? Ist das vielleicht der Grund, warum in der Vergangenheit die damalige Forschungs- und Militärstation fluchtartig verlassen wurde?
Schnell wird klar, dass da etwas unter dem Eis ist, mit dem keiner gerechnet hat.

Das Cover und auch der Klappentext haben mich sofort angesprochen und mich überzeugt das Buch zu lesen. Der Schreibstil hat mir wirklich gut gefallen, da er sehr ansprechend und fesselnd ist. Er ist aber auch sehr faktengebunden und wissenschaftlich, wodurch sich der Thriller nicht mal eben lesen lässt. Die Protagonisten sind sehr realistisch und durchdacht. Der Autor schafft es durch sie sehr gut das nötige Fachwissen zu übermitteln, ohne einen zu verwirrend der zu überfordern. Die düstere Atmosphäre in Verbindung mit der spannenden Handlung hat dafür gesorgt, dass ich das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen konnte. Ich konnte mich zudem sehr gut in die Szenerie und die Protagonisten hineinversetzen, wodurch es sich teils so angefühlt hat, als ob ich Teil der Geschichte bin.

Alles in allem ein wirklich spannender Thriller, der mich komplett in seinen Bann gezogen hat.

First, if you can read German, buy the original ("Eis Keim"). The English translation is not quite "Google Translate bad", but it is full of gendered pronouns for inanimate objects (German has grammatical gender), the phrase "XYZ wanted to know" is used about 80 times (I counted - easy on Kindle), many idioms are used in a slightly wrong context... In other words, this text has not seen a native English speaker.

That said, the novel, for the most part, reminds of Crichton's "Andromeda Strain" with a bit of cloak and dagger added. It is only the very ending where it devolves into '50s B-production SciFi tropes - that part feels rushed and lazy. The characters are pretty well developed (the cast is rather large, but the proverbial cookie cutter is nowhere to be seen; e.g. two soldiers and several spooks are rather different, sometimes to a comical effect). The "techno-" part of "techno-thriller", OTOH, is rather sketchy.

All said, a passable light read.

Good fun

Excellent plot, pacing and characters. There was enough scifi for it to be engaging.
One note, often the writer used had had in sentences, suggest using only one, it makes the sentence flow better and there no need for two back to back.
Overall, I recommend this scifi book.

Der Aufbau der Geschichte hat mir sehr gefallen. Es war spannend geschrieben.

Leider konnte die Spannung nicht mit dem Ende mithalten. Das war etwas enttäuschend. Es wirkt etwas gehetzt. Sie viel Aufbau für ein Recht unscheinbares Ende.

Nachdem bei einer Bohrung in arktischen Gefilden ein unvorhergesehenes Ereignis die Wissenschaftler in Aufregung versetzt, wird auch das US-Militär auf die Entdeckung aufmerksam und schickt eigene Leute vor Ort. Während die Wissenschaftler alleine ihrem Forscherinstinkt folgen, haben die Agenten ein ganz anderes Ziel.... Die Charaktere sind mit Tiefe gezeichnet, obwohl die ein oder andere Figur etwas zu klischeehaft rüber kommt. Und obwohl das Buch extrem spannend und gewohnt professionell und flüssig geschrieben ist, hätte ich mir persönlich etwas mehr Action, vielleicht noch mehr Sci-Fi oder eine Prise Horror, gewünscht. Vermutlich bin ich einfach mit den falschen Erwartungen an die Geschichte herangegangen, denn so blieb die Neugier, um was es sich eigentlich handelt, bis zum Ende unbefriedigt, wurde dann aber doch noch endlich zufriedenstellend befriedigt.
Fazit: Routinierter und überzeugender Thriller mit doppeltem Gänsehautfaktor.
