Kringletown Christmas #1

How My Neighbor Stole Christmas

Rate this book
A new winter holiday, enemies-to-lovers romance, from the undeniably funny and always spicy, USA Today bestselling author, Meghan Quinn.

Living in a year around Christmas town has it's drawbacks. The caroling, the decorations, the insanely cheery spirit, it never disappears. It's why I like to hibernate away in my cave--I mean house--keeping a healthy distance from the holly jolly spirits.

And all was going according to plan until my nemesis, Storee Taylor, moved in next door to care for her Aunt Cindy. Without blinking, she turned my simple world into a real nightmare-before-Christmas, especially when she decided to enter the town Christmas Kringle contest - which she was determined to win.

Well guess what? Over my cold-hearted body.

There was no way I was going to let her win, not after the history we'd shared.

So despite my promise to myself of never participating in the sickening Christmas season, I entered the competition as well. That's right, I planned on beating Storee at her own game by pretending this grump’s heart grew three sizes this season.

And it was working until feelings between us started heating up.
We pretended to date.
We kissed.
And well, sparks flew from there.

Which led to one explosive night involving Christmas lights, the competition, and a ladder. Don't let me convince you who stole Christmas, I think you need to find out for yourself...

When I was in high school I occasionally read books but was consumed by other teenage things so I didn't take the time to appreciate a good book on a cloudy day, wrapped up in a blanket on the couch. It wasn't until I received a Kindle for Christmas one year that my world completely flipped upside down. When looking for books I came across the Contemporary Romance genre and was sold and I haven't turned back since.

You can either find my head buried in my Kindle, listening to inspiring heart ripping music or typing away on the computer twisting and turning the lives of my characters while driving my readers crazy with anticipation.

I currently reside in beautiful Colorado Springs where the sun is always shining and there is a trail waiting to be hiked on every corner. I share a lovely and warm home with the love of my life and my five, four-legged children.

2.5 ⭐️ I liked the ending, that’s it, like literally the last 5%, the other 95% I could’ve lived without. Too long, didn’t care for the poems, didn’t like either of them, and their hate for each other wasn’t justified in my eyes really.

I genuinely have never been so upset in my life.

No cause let’s talk about this? Are book tok girlies genuinely ok? Bc how are the ratings so high? Is our bar on the floor ladies? Or what’s up bc I have genuinely never read anything worse? I’d take a Rehnquist opinion over anything Meghan Quinn writes literally ANY DAY.

Ladies, please, I’m begging you…touch grass?

the first 65% - absolutely SO cringey but in the best, jolliest, Hallmark kind of way.

so much Christmas spirit & the cutest, most festive scenes.

kicking my feet, literally grinning, giggling at the pages.

last 35% - SO LUSTY

the poems became… absurd and sexual. and just… weird.

sex on sex on sex (insane stamina i guess??)

i’m okay with a few spice scenes but this was genuinely too much.

and the candy cane scene…. just NO. filth.

The way they really violated that candy cane. I am not sure if I can look at a candy cane the same way again. The whole sex scene with the candy cane was really a violation.

Candy cane aside, this book was successful in getting me in the holiday spirit. I am now super excited for Christmas. I'm not kidding - I am now decorating my apartment for Christmas even though it's still before Thanksgiving.

However, this book was kind of stupid (I am sorry to describe it that way, but it was). This was a contemporary romcom, but the characters, townspeople/town, and plot were each so unrealistic that it felt like a fantasy. I know it's a contemporary romcom version of The Grinch, but it didn't really work for me. The characters hated each other, basically over a miscommunication 10 years earlier, and then after 1 conversation about halfway through the book, all is forgiven and they start screwing each other. It seemed kind of wild to me that a childhood accident has ruined Storee's Christmases for a decade. The fake dating was kinda dumb. The townspeople were annoying and weird (the Bob Krampus guy was kinda creepy?). The banter was sometimes entertaining and funny, as expected with Meghan Quinn, but it honestly felt like a bit much. The side characters like Max and Cindy felt like caricatures and too goofy to be real. I got a little bored of the romance and really stalled at around 75% into the book because I was bored and didn't care anymore. Overall, it was light and cheery about the holidays, but it's a little too long to be this boring and stupid. I love Meghan Quinn books generally, but this was my least favorite that I have read.

“But don’t you ever get scared?”
“If you allow fear to take over your actions, then you’re never going to accomplish anything.”

I had so much more fun with this than I thought I would!

How my Neighbor Stole Christmas is the first book in the Kringletown Christmas series. It is a small town, enemies to lovers Rom-com with a spinoff of the Grinch that made me laughing out loud and having the best time.

Storee is back in Kringletown after being gone for the last decade to help care for her Great Aunt Cindy. She entered the town's Kringle Christmas competition and is determined to win. That is until Cole decides to enter the competition as well to spite her. His plan is to do anything he can to keep her from winning, even if that means fake dating.

Storee Taylor is 29 years old, is fun, flirty and made me laugh out loud with her one liners. She had lost herself when some embarrassing events happened to her, tucking herself away in her apartment editing Lovemark movies. She was scared to get out and live again with fear of being embarrassed again. I can't really blame her because I would be nervous about reliving those moments. I loved when she started to come out of her shell more and started living again and pushing those fears aside and began having fun with the season and town again.

"And I mean that, because this town and I . . . we have history. Sordid history. Embarrassing history. The kind of history that has kept me away for ten years."

Cole Black
is grumpy, keeps to himself and is like the Grinch of Christmas since losing his parents when he was younger. So, I can't really blame him for not wanting much to do with the season. He made the decision to participate in the town's annual festivities and competitions that helped him start to enjoy them again. I loved watching him begin to enjoy the season as he used to being less grumpy and have a light about him again.

Max takes a step back, shielding his eyes. “What the hell are you doing?”
“Showing you my jolliness.”
“Well, fuck, stop. It’s terrifying.”

Storee and Cole
were childhood friends that had a crush on one another but the other never knew. When they first reunite after 10 years there is animosity, tension and good banter. I was having the best time giggling and kicking my feet with all their back and forth remarks to one another and the tricks that they would play on one another. They started things off as enemies, began to fake date for the town festivities and slowly those feelings start to transform into a friendship until there is so much more. Things moved quickly from friendship to lovers, but I wasn't mad about it as they had been friends years ago. I do know one thing that I will never look at a candy cane the same way again, iykyk. I loved watching them grow together and help the other back into having fun, good spirits and enjoying the season once again.

“You’ve brought some life back into my mundane days,” he says softly. “I knew I was living in the dark, going week by week, month by month, but I didn’t realize how far I’d sunk until you came back.”

This was cute and the perfect amount of festive for the holidays. It felt like a Hallmark movie but with spice and I enjoyed it. I really only had one issue and that was the conflict but thankfully it was cleared up rather quickly. I'm looking forward to reading the next book because I enjoyed Atlas.

"And then what happened, in Kringle they would say, was that Cole’s black heart grew three sizes that day. And the moment Cole’s heart didn’t pulse quite so tight, he grabbed Storee at the waist and kissed her under the green light."

This is like a naughty version of the grinch. An enemies to lovers with spice and a whole lot of Christmas. The concept of this one- enemies competing in a Christmas contest was wonderful. I loved all the banter and funny moments.

Every chapter starts with a christmasy poem from the narrator and those really made the book. Some of them were super naughty and spicy, some were funny, and some were cute. But they def made the story unique.

One thing I do NOT agree with is them saying Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. 😂 But there were lots of references to popular Christmas movies.

The spice was pretty spicy for a Christmas novel so keep that in mind.

This was the best Meghan Quinn book I have read in a while, because her other works fell short for me recently. I still felt this one could have been about 100 pages shorter and then it would have been 5 stars for me- wonderful concept that got a little long winded at times.

Overall though, this was a really good Christmas read. One of the better ones that I have read. I def recommend this one.

Thank you to netgalley for this free advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was the most unserious thing I have ever read...and I loved it. 😭 Not once could you get me to predict what was going to happen in this book I was thrown for a loop about every other chapter.

When I first started reading this, it took me a bit to adjust to the writing and style this book was written in (iykyk). This is definitely the most *unique* book I have read in a very long time. I struggled to really like our FMC at the beginning, as I found her a bit annoying and at times she could have been pretty insufferable.

However, the enemies-to-lovers aspect of this was SOOOO good!! I really loved Cole as a book boyfriend, but I loved him and Storee as a couple. This book was literally a cheesy, cliché Hallmark movie and they actually reference that a lot. I thought that their chemistry was amazing, especially as it developed over the course of this book.

I thought the idea for the plot was interesting and I was entertained the entire time. The spice? SO GOOD OKAY. The spice was so good. I found myself kinda shocked at first because of how DETAILED these scenes were, but I did ultimately enjoy them.

I also need to make a huge point of the humor this author used in this book. When I tell you that this has the FUNNIEST BANTER I HAVE EVER READ, I mean it with my whole chest. Taylor and I were on the DAMN FLOOR reading the convos between Storee, Cole, and Atlas. Too damn funny I swear to god. 😭

Overall, I have a very fun time reading this and I am very glad I got to read this with my bestie!! This book is definitely out there and it will not be for everyone, but I enjoyed it! This was my first Meghan Quinn book and it is certainly not my last. 🤩

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Buddy reading with my bestie Taylor yet again 🩷 I really hope this is enjoyable cause I'm here for the Christmas vibes 🤩
This festive rom-com had a lot of potential with its charming setup and holiday vibes, but it didn’t fully deliver for me. The story starts off with a lighthearted, slow-burn romance and some genuinely fun banter. However, around the 60% mark, it took a sharp turn into lust driven territory, which felt out of sync with the earlier tone of the book.
How My Neighbor Stole Christmas
The main conflict was unfortunately as thin and predictable as a Hallmark movie, lacking depth or real stakes. While I understand that holiday romcoms often lean into cliché, the resolution here felt especially cheesy and rushed. The ending tied everything up neatly, but it didn’t leave me fully satisfied.
Additionally, the pacing was a struggle. The book dragged in parts, and I couldn’t help but feel that a few chapters could have been trimmed to make the story more engaging.
That said, the holiday setting and Quinn’s signature humor brought some warmth and charm to the story. If you’re looking for a breezy Christmas romance that doesn’t take itself too seriously, this might work for you, but for me, it was just okay. 🎄✨
- Ok the ending of this was sooo cute!! I literally felt like I was watching a movie while reading it. This book definitely got me into the Christmas mood!! Loved the family aspect of this story and how it really focused on the importance of being connected with loved ones during the holiday season.
- This book felt loooong. I wish that some of the competition had been taken out because I got the vibe of those after the first few. I wish we had gotten more of their moments together in town doing holiday things outside of the competition and outside of the spices I’m not the biggest spicy fan unless I feel like I get a little more depth from the characters and wish I could have gotten more of those moments to balance the spice.
- This book made me giggle which I think was the point! Cutesy and fun! If you enjoy long books with lots of spice, you might enjoy this one it just wasn’t for me!
💬⋮ 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬
⊹ This is my second book now by Meghan Quinn. I fell in love with her writing & humor in Till Summer Do Us Part. Easy 5 ⭐️s. While this was a fun read & a perfect rom com for Christmas, it got on my nerves a little at times. 😅 but that doesn’t mean I didn’t really enjoy it!
The Pros:
+ The humor. I caught myself chuckling out loud quite a few times. MQ’s humor can be so ridiculous you can’t help, but to laugh.
+ The setting/vibes. Cozy all year Christmas town in the mountains with a Christmas competition. I ate that up. I love when a Christmas book actually includes Christmassy things.
+ I loved the concept of the Christmas competition to see who had the most Christmas spirit. Kinda felt like a Hallmark movie, except dirty.
+ The narrator. I thought the inserts from the narrator were such a clever, fun idea to put the twit on the Grinch retelling.
The Cons:
- The humor. Now hear me out… While I did think this book was funny, did all the jokes land for me? No. Some I found really immature & just plain stupid. Sexual humor is not the only type of humor there is!
- The FMC & MMC, Storee & Cole, acted like they were still in their teen years. I felt like they were lacking maturity & it showed in their relationship. This goes along with the humor, but some of the jokes made by the characters felt like a conversation between teenage boys.
- The extra curricular activities done with a candy cane. In the moment I was… intrigued & felt a little hot under my collar, but now that I’m writing the review & thinking about it…. Nah. I’ll leave candy canes away from certain body parts, tysm.
Would I Recommend?: yes, but just go in knowing it might be a little on the immature side. If you’re okay with that, you’re going to have a great time with this one.
Tell me why something I expected to be a simple holiday read had way more charm than anticipated?? 🎄
🍭 The Setup
Storee hasn’t stepped foot in Kringletown — the Christmasiest mountain town of her childhood — in ten years. One mortifying incident sent her fleeing, and unfortunately, that meant leaving behind the boy next door who once made her holidays sparkly.
Now she’s back to help her Great Aunt Cindy recover… and who’s standing there like a broody gingerbread villain? Cole. He’s no longer the warm kid she remembers — he’s bitter and closed-off.
Before she knows it, Storee gets dragged into the town’s Christmas Kringle competition, and Cole signs up too… out of spite. Nothing says holiday cheer like petty competitive tension, right? ✨
🍿 Storee Taylor
Storee is a 29-year-old California girl editing Lovemark Channel movies from the safety of a life that’s quietly shrunk. Work, friendships, dating… she’s kept everything at a comfortable distance because risking embarrassment again? Nope.
Kringletown pulls her out of her bubble. Suddenly she’s showing up, participating, being seen… and realizing how small her world had become. Watching her reconnect with joy and actually live again was genuinely touching. I was rooting for her the whole time.
❄️ Cole Black
Under Cole’s frosty exterior is someone lonely, loyal, hurting, and aching for connection. And when he invites Storee into his undecorated house and asks her to help bring Christmas back into it — I absolutely melted. 🥺
Cole hasn’t celebrated Christmas since the night he lost his parents — which also happened to be the night Storee disappeared from his life. His holiday spirit shattered, and he’s been living quietly ever since, caring for his reindeer and hanging out with Max (Atlas), the best best friend a recluse could ask for.
I loved his and Atlas’s banter. It’s hilarious (“You were right, dear”), and Atlas is the exact ride-or-die friend who kept Cole afloat — truly more like a brother.
"It's my duty. You're my little Snow Daddy nugget. I have to make sure you're always taken care of."
I wheezed.
🎅 My Thoughts
Yes, the beginning is slow.
Yes, they act childishly for… longer than they should.
Yes, the final conflict is unnecessary at best.
BUT I still had such a good time.
The banter had me laughing out loud, the soft moments land, and Cole’s grief adds just enough depth without overpowering the rom-com vibes. The Christmas competition is pure festive chaos — baking fails, fruitcake tastings, candy cane classes — and it’s delightful.
I also loved the emphasis on family and connection — the reminder that holidays can be bittersweet, but also healing when you’re surrounded by people who care.
Audiobook note: Highly recommend! Full cast, duet narration — super fun and brings the story to life beautifully. 🎧
"A gentleman can hold the door open for you...and slap your fine ass when you beg for it."
🎄 Final Take
My first Meghan Quinn, and honestly? A holiday win. Festive, chaotic, sparkly, a little ridiculous, and sneakily emotional.
If it were a little shorter (and skipped the forced conflict), it’d be a full 5 stars for me.
Perfect if you want a Hallmark movie → dipped in spice → rolled in grief healing → dusted with rom-com glitter.🎄
3.5🎄MOST CHRISTMASY book I ever read!! Absolutely nothing is more Christmas than Snow Daddy tying her up in the reindeer barn & fucking her with a candy cane ✨🍬
Storee moved to a modern day Whoville with a huge Christmas Kringle competition🎄✨ She is pressured to enter, which really pisses off her long lost friend & neighbour due to reasons. Cole really just enters to spite her and ruin all her plans. Somewhere between the walk across Ornament Park and candy cane making class they actually talk to each other and wouldn’t you believe it they sort out their issues (yes, I hate miscommunication trope)
♥️ fake dating to secret dating
💚 Xmas competition with baking, wrapping & stocking stuffing challenges
♥️ massive Dr. Who ~ Grinch vibes!
💚 miscommunication & bickering
♥️ candy cane flavoured BJ #seasonalSmut
While I loved all the Christmas plot I found the story & banter quite cringe. This was my second Megan Quinn book and I think her writing style might just not be for me. It feels like she spoon-feeds every aspect of the plot and it messes with the pacing. It took me almost 1 month to finish this!
SURPRISINGLY SMUTTY! Was it cringe? Yes, but also incredibly seasonal! ✨🎄
Festive chaos, grumpy sparkle, & holiday hijinks!
I listened to How My Neighbour Stole Christmas by Meghan Quinn after Christmas, but the audiobook still managed to draw me into its festive, over the top holiday setting. Kringletown is Christmas turned up to eleven, and dropping a full fledged holiday grump into the middle of it made for a fun and amusing setup. The narration made this an easy listen and kept me engaged, especially during the early small town antics.
There were moments I genuinely enjoyed, particularly the humour, the playful nods to classic Grinch energy, and the Kringle contest itself, which was easily one of the most fun parts of the story. Cole’s resistance to Christmas felt believable, and Storee’s determination added some nice balance. That said, the story stayed fairly light emotionally, and as it went on, the heavier language and level of spice started to pull me out of the cosy holiday mood I was hoping for.
✨ Key Thoughts
🎧 The audiobook narration was smooth and made this an easy, pleasant listen.
🎄 The banter and Kringle contest added fun, festive stakes.
😂 There were several laugh out loud moments that genuinely made me smile.
📚 The rhyming intros at the start of each chapter were a clever and fun touch.
🔥 The language and spice were more explicit than I prefer and felt a bit out of place at times.
Overall, How My Neighbour Stole Christmas was an enjoyable holiday listen that worked well in the moment but did not fully win me over. I liked the festive setup and humour, especially early on, but the stronger language and spice kept it from being a standout for me. A good pick if you want something seasonal, playful, and a little naughty, but not my favourite type of holiday read.
