Rate this book
A Futuristic Space Fantasy Novelette

Forced into executing Aresia's people, eighteen-year-old Phoebus escapes the Aresian Guard by flying his spaceship through a wormhole.

The only single woman of marrying age, eighteen-year-old Marissa flees town instead of becoming a third wife.

When Phoebus's spacecraft crashes upon an asteroid-ravaged Earth, he is captured by a rogue Earthling youth and thrown into a cellar. Marissa stumbles upon the spacecraft, but it explodes before she can find any sign of the alien. When she awakens, she discovers the alien's whereabouts and vows to help him. But the Aresians have landed and are searching for him. Phoebus and Marissa must battle against their peoples in a quest for freedom. And through it all, an Earthling and an Aresian will find it easier to fight gravity than their love for each other.

Fighting Gravity is approximately 15,000 words or 63 pages.

Other books in the Gravity series include Defying Gravity and Pull of Gravity as well as the complete collection Gravity: The Complete Trilogy.

Phoebus is tormented by his daimon and forced to execute his fellow Aresians. He attempts to escape through a wormhole, but ends up being captured on a primitive planet called Earth. Marissa hopes to find a new life for herself, but the world outside her tiny community isn't what she expected it to be. Her old friends turned scavengers have nefarious plans for her. Her only chance for help is to free Phoebus and flee with him. They're hunted and must learn to trust one another, finding more than just trust along the way.

This is the second novella in Cherie Reich's Gravity series. She has outdid herself with this dark and action packed science-fiction fantasy romance. She starts you off right in the middle of the action, and I was on the edge of my seat through the whole thing. The image Cherie paints of an Earth hit by an asteroid is harsh and dismal, but not without hope. Marissa has the light of hope in her heart. She's sweet and compassionate, and though she's rightfully afraid, she has the courage to do what's necessary when the time comes. Phoebus is from a cold and war-hungry people who make themselves into something more by infusing themselves with daimons. It's fascinating and terrifying at the same time. The Aresians are a complex culture and the daimons a mystery. This aspect really intrigued me because I didn't know what Phoebus' daimon would do next.

This story is light on the romance, so I believe sci-fi and dark fantasy fans will love it. There's fighting, betrayal, and unexpected twists. Cherie's writing is sharp and her imagery vivid. She makes the story come alive before your eyes. Fighting Gravity captivated me from beginning to end. Even if you haven't read the first book in the series, Defying Gravity, you can still thoroughly enjoy this one.

A roller coaster ride with a sweet interstellar romance at its core…

Phoebus is a young Aresian escaping from his home planet to avoid executing fellow Aresians as part of his job. He has a Daimon inside him, a very special spirit guide that only occurs once a century. He doesn’t want it, but it has chosen him for reasons he can’t explain. He crashes on a post-apocalyptic Earth, and is taken prisoner by a band of young men who’ve lost their purpose in life.

Marissa is bound to be married to a village elder as his third wife. All the eligible bachelors in town left for a better life. She escapes in the middle of the night, journeying to St. Louis in hopes of a better life. Filled with guilt and despair, she stumbles upon a crashed space ship.

But, the village men have come back. They couldn’t find anything better in St. Louis, and now all they want to do is steal and have some fun. They capture Marissa and tie her up as they decide what to do with her. But, there’s another prisoner down in the cellar, a young Aresian that will change Marissa’s life.

Fighting Gravity is a story about two lost souls escaping oppression and trying to find a better life. They realize their “better life” can be found in one another. But, will they survive to enjoy their future together? Reich takes the reader on a thrill ride of an adventure. Not only does Phoebus and Marissa find each other, but they also discover a lot about themselves. There’s a great deal of soul searching, and I love how the characters develop and grow together in such a short time. The backstories that unfold throughout the tale are so intricate and well thought out, I loved finding out more about each character. The different culture on Aresian was so intriguing, it left me hoping Reich writes an entire book about Aresia.

I recommend this book to all futuristic fantasy and romance fans.

Intriguing, fast-paced, sci-fi fantasy with a dash of romance

Tormented by his daimon, and the task of executioner, Phoebus, a young Aresian, flees his planet, escapes through a wormhole, and crashes into Earth. A group of boys take him captive.

Marissa, eager to escape an arranged marriage, leaves her family in search of a better life. She witnesses Phoebus crash and is captured by the same group of boys.

Together, the two escape their captors, but become prey to the Aresians, searching for Phoebus.

Cherie Reich creates a futuristic world and throws these two characters together up against the odds of survival. The journey this story takes you on is full of secrets, discoveries, and reflections from both characters. It pulls you in and supplies you with a unique ride from beginning to satisfying end.

MY REVIEW

This is the second novelette in Cherie Reich's Sci-Fi Gravity Series. I did enjoy this short story, you get attached to the characters quickly. In this story two totally different people from different races are running away from their own people, when they become captured. Once again these people end up joining forces to escape their captors. They quickly come to care and rely on each other.
there is danger, aliens, suspense, mystery, and friendship in this short tale.
These short novelettes are ideal to sit and read when you don't have a great deal of time or to squeeze in between other books as a breather perhaps. I could see these short tales within magazines as your "read with a cuppa" type of tale. I also think it would be great if Cherie Reich put all her novelettes together in an anthology of her works.
Did I enjoy the novelette? Yes, just wish it had been longer , I felt I wanted to know even more about the characters and wanted to find out what happened to them next. Would you read more of this Series? YES Please! would you recommend this novelette? Yes, its a good short read.

Available from Amazon.com, and Amazon.co.uk £0.77

***WARNING* A novelette is longer than a short story but not as long as a novella **

Cherie Reich has put together another great sci-fi adventure in 'Fighting Gravity', the second book in her series, Gravity, with the tale of Phoebus and Marissa, as they fight for survival. First the two band together to escape the clutches of a group of vigilantly Earthlings, only to find they have to battle an Aresian battalion, sent by Phoebus's mother to extract his father's Daimon, a Symbian paired with Phoebus which also battles for control.

Marissa takes a chance to save a lone survivor of a space crash and finds the world she once knew is a turmoil of lost souls. She and Phoebus find love as they work together to survive on the surface of a ravaged Earth, fighting for their lives against many foes.

This sci-fi fantasy brings an interesting mix of love, friendship, trust and betrayal in a futuristic setting on Earth, where the two lost beings find one another and are brought together in a tale of their survival.

A sweet story of love at first sight between a human woman and a hot alien guy! Both Phoebus and Marissa are running from something, and this creates an instant bond between the two of them. Will it be enough to free them both?

Just like the first book I enjoyed this one a lot. This time we've got a story of aresian man escaping from his own people and human woman. A little bit of action and romance and we've got another great story :)
