Whether via the collapse of the economy, natural disasters, or unexpected personal tragedies, it seems that millions in our culture are having their faith and confidence shaken to the core. Eric Sandras knows this firsthand. When he lost his dream job and his home thereafter, he thought he was going through a rough patch. Then he had to move away from his family to find work. Then he found out he had cancer. And that wasn't the end of it either. In this honest and gritty approach to crisis and loss, Eric doesn't candy coat struggle nor does he give it more power than it deserves. Instead, he helps readers make room for God to shed a ray of hope, even in the worst of circumstances. Devoid of Christian platitudes and spiritual Band-Aids, When the Sky is Falling gets real about the muck we experience in life -- and how to find purpose in the pain and hope for a new beginning.
Powerful read! I know scripture states that the LORD will not give us more than we can handle, but WOW! After reading Mr. Sandra's personal story I am amazed at his faith during those trying times in his journey. In reading his personal story I feel as though I should pray as the man in Mark 9:23-25, "And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief." This book helps/helped renew my faith/hope that there are some "suddenlys'" in my future, maybe not when I want, but when Jesus wants. I highly recommend this book to people who know Jesus and those who don't. Mr. Sandras does not, as he states in his book, offer useless platitudes or popular "Christian phrases" when relaying certain tragedies in his life and others' lives. He keeps it "real"; real in that people get angry at God, grieve, and feel hopeless. However, his story offers hope in events that will happen that he labels "suddenlys". After reading this personal journey I feel you will be transformed in some way, whether big or small. Thank you for sharing your story Mr. Sandras.
I am a bit skeptical of books about suffering as they can be a bit self righteous and saccharine. This book was real and gritty. Like a phoenix, the author’s faith prevailed and was raised through the ashes. Mr Sandras doesn’t sugarcoat his experiences and temptations. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is encountering endless waves of suffering, loss, and hard times. I am so glad I read this.
So often, it seems that the best thing Christian leaders have to offer in a time of crisis and pain is advice. This book is refreshingly slim on advice, and is filled instead with empathy. Eric shares his life, and his struggles. The semi-autobiographical nature of the book makes it feel like he walks with us. And though the book is filled with stories of pain and struggles, Eric never fails to point to the Savior who does walk with us. Eric doesn't seek to answer every question, but to provide reassurance that we are not alone.
We're told that crisis and hardship can be pathways to growth; Eric Sandros speaks generously to this truth with great transparancy and dignity. With clinical and theological insight, When The Sky Is Falling is a book that will appeal to most everyone. Read this book, you will be better off when you do.
