Make Me A Promise

Rate this book
“Can you make me one promise?” was the last question the love of Adriel Thomas’s life spoke before she walked out on him under the guise of pursuing her dreams. Having no choice but to move on with his life, Adriel left her and their love in the past. Now, years later, he’s given an ultimatum that leaves him in a tough spot, and the only person that may be able to save him is the one he let slip away.

R&B singer Sayori Reynolds swore she’d never set foot in her old town when she left it in her rearview. However, unforeseen circumstances send her seeking refuge in the very place she ran from all those years ago. When she bumps into an old flame, sparks fly, and she’s reminded of the promise they made to each other.

Family secrets and trauma, both past and present, threaten to turn her world upside down and she begins to question if she can keep her word. Will the two of them be able to come together with so many forces against them, or will they learn not all promises can be kept?

Adriel gave his heart to Sayori in the church basement at the age of sixteen and she’s held it hostage from that day forward. Two years into their budding young romance they’re heading off to college and even though they have all the apprehension in the world when it comes to maintaining a long distance relationship, they’re determined to make it work. Days before graduation things take a turn and once a life long secret is revealed, Sayori goes running for the hills and leaves everything and everyone in her rearview.

Fast forward 9 years later and Sayori’s life is far from what she thought it would be. She thought leaving home would be the best thing for her but she enrolled into the school of hard knocks and man did it knock her all upside the head! The last place she wanted to end up was back home but that’s exactly what happens and when she does, her past comes crashing with her present full force!

AD never thought he would see the love of his life again. After she ran out on him he continued to live his life but in the back of his mind he vowed that if they ever crossed paths again, he wouldn’t let her go. Welp he finally gets his chance and he applied pressure like nothing I’ve ever seen.

There was something about this book that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. The characters were saying all the right things but the connection that I hoped to have never arrived. I told my book bestie that this book had the foundation of a good story and had it been in the hands of a more seasoned author, they would’ve SMOKED this storyline. Kami however did not. There were too many inconsistencies for me and I found myself picking the book apart instead of enjoying the story. I felt like an English teacher with a red pen marking errors and other mistakes. The author switched from first to third person, she switched POVs mid chapter with no warning and even mixed up timelines and other details in the story.

There was a whole 9 year gap with these characters and the author left us completely blind with details regarding what happened during this period. The author told us Sayori had all of this trauma but in what way? She eluded to SA but it was never clearly defined. How did she get her start in the music industry. Did she go to music school? Did she finish?! How did she get in bed literally and figuratively with Razor?

What was going on with AD? How did he meet his wife/fiancé because she was referred to as both🥴? What was the grief like with his loss? When he left the church, where was he during the 4 then 5 then 4 years because again both were mentioned 🥴? What did that return look like? See blind 👩🏾‍🦯

Things that didn’t make sense…..

▪️How did Malcolm go from being a convicted felon on house arrest to being in Las Vegas at the exact hotel, on the exact floor and the exact moment as Sayori 🤔

▪️ Still trying to figure out which islands Elephants are on 🥴

▪️Sayori spoke of Jeff’s advice in the present tense when he severed business ties with her months prior.

▪️Sex flashbacks durning the church sermon was weird

▪️Why introduce Razor and Raquel for dramatic effect if they were going to fall off the face of the pages. What happened to them?! One minute they’re there, the next poof 💨 we never hear from them again

We got repetitive details about things that weren’t necessary to keep bringing up but got no follow through on what happened during dinner at his parents house when Raquel showed up, we got no details of the proposal and were given half assed vows.

Statements like “since we made things official” and “in the beginning” during their honeymoon were confusing for me because how much time passed? This was never clear and the way the story was written had me believing that very little time passed which would make Sayori’s sudden change seem out of place in the story.

Their conversations went from serious to super playful in mere seconds so I didn’t know what feelings to attach to the situation she literally would be crying one minute and hopping on peen the next. She definitely needed the therapy that was recommended in the beginning of the book that we never saw happen.

Don’t even get me started on ADs daddy and that piss poor excuse for why he mistreated Sayori because it was bs and the author should be ashamed for passing that off as a valid reason.

AD was the highlight of the story and the only reason the book didn’t get 2 stars from me! He was everything and more that you would expect from a MMC/bookbae and that poor man carried this entire book on his back!

This booked needed a test reader, a beta reader, an editor and everything in between. This is book 7/8 for Kami so I expected way more from her. I’m side eyeing all the 5 star reviews HEAVILY!! Yall got me but you won’t get me again!

Sayori, drifted through life feeling unwanted, unloved, misunderstood, and unworthy. These feelings as well as the trauma of not having her father in her life, has allowed her to let the narrative of other's become her focus. Her saving grace in life, was her relationship with Adriel. He understood her, comforts her, and makes her feel important. However, when she overhears some hurtful things about herself, she tucks her tail and runs. Leaving Adriel in utter devastation. 💔

Adriel, AD, or Pastor, this man is everything! He was mature, wise, and protective even at a young age, and was destined for great things. He was prepared for all of that with Sayori by his side, but life dealt them a different hand. Adriel leaned on that promise he made with Sayori, hoping that one day their paths would cross again.

Well, Sayori, you know what they say about making plans right? With her life in shambles, she ends up right back in the place she was running from all along. To make matter worse, she runs right into Adriel as well. This can't be my life she thinks. But when God has a plan.....

I loved these two together. The way that Adriel nurtured, and poured into Sayori, she began to see life differently. The fun-loving couple they were in their teens, had reemerged with grown up life experiences. Now pastor was something like I've never seen before, but I'm good wit it! 😍 We were able to relate so well to Adriel. Yes, he was a pastor, however, we could see and feel the elements of him also being a man. Often times pastors are put on a pedestal, that they don't even feel approachable. But not Pastor AD. He was adored and trusted by all. Making good on that promise was about to change both of their lives for the better.

Now you know there had to be some drama, right? Bishop Thomas really got on my nerves with his nasty attitude, and judgement. Really man of God? 👀😤 Then the connection with Pastor Massey, chile.... The gems, life lessons, and the word that was brought forth in this read was 🔥! I feel transformed, healed, blessed after this story. Kami! Take you bow ma'am! ❤️ 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

I promise

I promise you are going to love this second chance romance. I will admit, this one took all of my reading energy today, as this story was time consuming. The spiritual aspects in the story elevated the story for me. Keep in mind, Adriel was a PK, and the plan was for him to follow in his father's footsteps and lead a church. His relationship with Sayori began when they were youth's and the Pastor's did not plan for Adriel and Sayori to be together. The two made a promise when they went their separate ways that will come to pass. The men of faith were poor examples in this one. I am happy Adriel had a strong conviction to stand in his truth. I enjoyed this story from start to finish. I don't want to give spoilers, so that's it.

Wonderful love story..

This was such a great second chance love story. It was full of life lessons and the greatness of God's grace and mercy. Plus some drama and smut....which makes for an even better story. Young love to mature love story.

Review (somewhat)

So I’ll start out by first saying what I did like… So the beginning of the book was good caught my attention and had me flipping through the pages trying to figure out more.. the beginning I felt like the chemistry between Sayori and Adriel was there… I hated that Sayori felt she needed to move away to be better… I hate that there were hints at who her father was from the very beginning and throughout the book…

Razor was a douche and I’m glad she left his no good self….

Miranda and her brother straight 🗑️

Once we get about 30% we start talking in circles and about stuff that was never mentioned. The chemistry is no longer there better Sayori and Adriel and it seems so weird… I got to 53% and then DNF because I was so lost and there was so much being repetitive I kept having to go back and read the last few pages to see if I missed something to the point I started rereading. I love me some Kami but this one didn’t do it for me..

Good read. I’m always on the fence reading about Pastors because I wonder how the author can keep the integrity when it’s not necessarily a “Christian Fiction” novel, but this was enjoyable. I think I just like Kami’s writing. I figured out the whole story within the first chapter, lol, but I still enjoyed the read.

This fell a bit short for me in the sense that FMC just left for 9 years. I understand she was young, but I just felt like there were some missing pieces. What was life like in those 9 years, what was the heavy trauma aside from abandonment issues (which I totally get). Like the characters were developed, but maybe the story wasn’t as developed as it could be.

Amazing, A Must Read❤️❤️❤️❤️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book has to be very personal for the author. I can feel the blood, sweat, tears and love in each word spoken!!! You will go through all of the emotions while reading this. Man this was a well written book!

If my man don’t stand up for me like Pastor did, send him back. He was the truth when it came to if you can’t respect or accept her then you can’t respect or accept me. No one was off limits when it came to Sayori.

Beautiful!

Absolutely beautiful! This is what I love about romance novels. Honestly, the overall story was a 5⭐️. But the grammatical errors, the lack of trigger warning, and some bits of inconsistency; took it down a star.

For example: was Jhene his wife or fiancée? Because she is referred to as both.

It’s been a while since I’ve read something and felt like I could feel the characters pain. But there were a few instances, I teared up because of what Sayori was experiencing. Initially, I thought the story was too daunting- like dang when we get to the good stuff. But there seemed to have been a method to that madness. Because honey, when they good parts happen and Pastor AD started loving on her.

Whew child! It got real good. I couldn’t stop smiling, it made me feel hopeful. There’s so many gems in this story. This may be one of the most highlighted reads I’ve had in a while.

Definitely worthy of a re-read. I could go on and on. The generational trauma and repeated patterns of dsyfunction. Such a good story. Best I’ve read from this author.

preach on preacher

To lose oneself or never really know who you are is a scary feeling. It allows for other people to paint their insecurities and their hate upon you. What you then see is what other people have painted on you. Sayori is at a crossroads in her life . Things aren’t panning out in her career, people see her as trouble. When an event scares her enough to finally go back home, she runs into the former love of her life. When Adriel runs into Sayori, he knows it’s time to cash in on a Promise they made to each other many years ago. Adriel is a pastor, but he ain’t your daddy’s pastor! The way Adriel affirms Sayori and allows her to be herself was just so beautifully written. Kami !! Kami continues to write black love so well! I’m a fan!!

This is one of the best I have read in a long time

Kami you have done it once again. This book was amazing. It covered so many things. It made you laugh, it made you cry. It or you know that God is the best of planners and He had the final say. AD knew that Sayori would be his wife, even as a child he knew. I loved the way AD loved her and he treated her like fine China. I couldn't stand his father because he was such a hypocrite. But in the end everything turned out the way it was supposed to. Kami we need more books like this. It was about the church and gave plenty of lessons in it. But AD and Sayori together was🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Oh this one is from the heart

The little church girl in me was all in for this one! Sayori and Adriel fell in love at an early age. They are from different family backgrounds, with one side looking down on the other. They do their best to fight against the naysayers. But secrets drive Sayori away but not before a promise of a future. There's heartbreak and marriage of convenience...they love story took the long way around, but it still hits you right in the heart. Kami friend, you did it again.!

4.5 ⭐️

This book was sooo different from what Kami has written in the past but it still was sooo good. Kami wrote some good church scenes in her Graham series so I knew she was gone eat this up. This book is a faith/christian based book where the MMC is heavily involved in the church but it still has spicy scenes, funny moments, trifling side characters & drama. This one was good.

WHEW!!! I got emotional reading this story and I mean that in a good way. Kami you wrote the heck outta this book and I loved every bit of it. To truly watch Sayori and Adriel’s story unfold was truly incredible. My girl Sayori, WHEW!!! Life dealt you some messy cards from your child hood on up. I hated that people tried you the way they did when it wasn’t even warranted. I disliked Pastor Thomas for so long especially after those things he said about you that night Adriel took Raquel to her prom because his words were cruel. I even was annoyed with you because I didn’t understand why you kept so much inside when AD loved you the way he did and he protected you at all cost. But I digress…. And I guess everything happens for a reason. Cause one thing for certain 2 things for sure, AD didn’t play about you at 16 and he didn’t change those feeling as a grown man. Chyyyyyyy! I loved how he loved and protected you. Whew! This book warmed my heart and gave me all the feels cause Pastor or not that man stood on business when it came to you. I think I loved AD the most because despite any and everything he chose you EVERYTIME, he protected you EVERYTIME, and when it was all said and done it was YOU. Now Sayori, yo daddy did upset me but I forgave him because he owned up to his mistakes and he was honest about the fact that he messed up badly. I loved your bond and relationship with Aries and even Amira. It was beautiful to see you build the relationship with Micah and Taryn because you deserved to have a bond with your siblings especially with so much time lost. AD, you already know how imma come behind you cause you were that MAN period!!!!! You ain’t play with yo daddy, or anyone who thought they could try Ori, and you were everything she didn’t know she needed to heal and be the phenomenal woman she was destined to be. Lawd, my little heart is so happy. Thank you Kami for such a different yet fulfilling story about love, forgiveness, redemption, and healing.

Love Godly Love...

This was a beautiful story that started from childhood to adulthood! I'm a thorough Christian so it was soo refreshing to read an urban Christian story that I could truly relate too. The way the main characters spoke to one another in love was nothing short of Gods love!! However, the story was fully written in the 1st 75% of the book whereas the end felt rushed. We didn't see anything come to full fruition. Leaving the relationship with the fathers, the child birth, the relationship with the siblings, those things were kind of left to is to imagine and that was disappointing. An epilogue would've been enough in my opinion to close the gap on those things. It appears to be rushed like a deadline was approaching and she had to wrap it up. Not sure but that's how it felt! Because I love everyone else I gave it 4 ⭐️ would've easily been a 5 ⭐️ if she closed those gaps. It ended abruptly. Please read her other books she's slowly becoming a fav and definitely in my top 3 of authors $

AMAZING! 🥰 this is for all the daddy girls with absent fathers, oh my heart ached for Sayori 💔 Kudos for addressing church hurt! This book just resonated with me as a church kid, all the judgement, unaddressed issues, but also the restoration, healing and community that can exist at the same time.
Pastor Massey & Pastor Thomas ya were MESSY 🤦🏾‍♀️😒😕!
The way Pastor Adriel loved, protected and affirmed Sayori…ohhh baby! I loved so much about this book, high school sweethearts, 2nd chance romance, marriage of convenience, the back scene of the church. The siblings were comic relief Aries, and Micah were hilarious 😂
Just read it!!!! Favorite quote
“Promise me that you’ll never stop loving me. Promise me that if you ever feel like I’m not giving you the love you need, you’ll tell me so I can fix it. I prayed for you to come back to me, and I don’t ever want you to regret being here.” Pastor AD ❤️🫶🏾

A Promise You Can Keep

Kami….whew chile. Pastor AD had me hot and bothered. Mmhmmm. The way that man love Sayori was intense. When they say your man should be your protector.. AD’s picture should be plastered. Even when life separated them, it only took ten seconds for them to reconnect before he went for what was his. Ori’s story was filled with sadness and secrets. The sins of the parents always have a way of disrupting lives. I was so glad once everything was out in the open and healing could begin. Micah and Aries are the friends that everyone needs. Will Aries be getting a book? I feel like sis has a story to tell and I’m trying to hear it. I’d also like to see a glimpse of AD and Ori as parents.

Make Me A Promise

I loved Sayori & Adriel! In the beginning I always wondered why Ori was so timid but when you’ve felt rejection most of your life I can understand it. To know that she went through so much in a pursuit of happiness breaks my heart but shows how strong she really is. AD unfortunately had to experience his loss in order to build himself up to become the leader he is.

I loved how this read addressed the issues of the churches without overdoing it & also without making the characters sacrifice themselves to fit in. It showed the natural growth a person goes through especially spiritually. I’ve been Ori & it would’ve been a blessing to have a AD!!! I also loved how you let the characters be human (yes the pastor has “adult time” lol)

wow!! i can’t get over this book!

Adriel is the EPITOME of a man of God. THAT’S what i want. i want a love where my man prays with and for me everyday. and vice versa. i want a relationship where God is at the center of everything we do ESPECIALLY the relationship. the way Adriel loves Sayori is so beautiful! she was broken and was afraid that she will “ruin” his reputation and image so she ran. but God had other plans and reunited them and now Adriel vows to protect, love and honor her. he vows to carry all her burden. he vows to heal her heart with so much love. i absolutely love this book. i can’t get over it!! Ms. Kami Holt did her BIG ONE with this one right here!!!

My Lord!

Miss Kami wrote the hell out of this book! Baby the way Adriel held Sayori down was no joke! I love that he stood by her side during her return after she left! I love how he didn’t play behind her with nobody, not even his father! I didn’t like how her parents and Adriel’s father played with her! Another book she made and had my emotions all over the place! I love how they healed each other and at the end it was so beautiful! Looking forward to what’s next from this Author!

Let The Church Say Amen

Sayori and AD were two mated souls. Ori was a young girl who went through her entire life not feeling good enough because of the sins of the adults in her life.

Through a series of unfortunate events, she and her childhood sweetheart reconnect and their adult romance begins.

This book touched on a lot of things that I really like and I gotta say this is my first book I’ve read about a pastor that I really like. Pastor AD is alright with me 😉 holy and a lil hood, I likes thattt.

You had me at Preacherbae

Reading this book was both triggering and healing at the same time. I related to Sayori in so many ways. Dealing with rejection from your father and a hypercritical mother, I felt her pain. Plus she could sing and so can I. I kept trying to figure out why Adriel's father hated Sayori so much. It just didn't make sense. It's sad that it took his son to make him realize just how judgemental and hypocritical he was being. All in all this was a great story, one that needed to be told. Highly recommend this book

A good read.

I'm not typically a fan of books that contain religion, but this was pretty good because it wasn't all preachy & over-saturated with church banter. Kami allowed you as a reader to focus on the love story between A.D. & Sayori while giving insight into how religious backgrounds can affect you in many different aspects. I enjoyed all the characters & the plot as well, so if you're like me, I think this is a good start to indulge in a book that is kinda religious based.

Happy Reading!!

Good read!!

This story was so real because life doesn’t always happen like we want it to. And we have to trust that God will direct, guide, and protect us. This story signifies the saying ‘right person, wrong time.’ Sayori and Adriel were perfect for each other. I love that Adriel has always been 100% team Sayori. Even with all the time that had passed, he loved her and vice versa. I love the type of man Adrieal was. And I love that Sayori received his love. And Sayori was a beautiful person who was dealt a touch hand of cards.

This was the sweetest of second chance love story. When at sixteen Adriel promises to love Sayori and only her. As young as they are they are all in and have their eyes on love and building a future together. Well graduation night life takes an unexpected turn and turns Sayori’s life upside down and she holds it all in never looking back. Both AD and Sayori go on in life without each other but both have experience heart break and lose so much of themselves. When life couldn’t get any worst with the way life is going for them both they cross paths. The fact that Sayori has to come back home baby all that was swept under the rug is now being exposed and then some. This book has so much church hurt and it’s so much that be going on like that in real life. All the family secrets that are effecting everyone. Then you also have the gaining the family you have longed for in siblings. Sayori went through life feeling unwanted, unworthy and misunderstood only for her life to be a testimony and for her to get all the love and support needed to live.
