A pitch-perfect new rural romance from the bestselling author of Kookaburra Cottage.
From interviewing local flower growers to receiving blue ribbons for her show baking, Lauren Bickford's genuine love for her hometown is almost as strong as her ambition to become a radio presenter. But is it enough to outweigh the series of on-air stuff-ups that have plagued her career?
No stranger to this small winegrowing region in South Australia's Limestone Coast, Jack Crossley is the new cop in town. He's traded his city beat for a slower pace, and as a former local, knows only too well that mischief can lurk around every quiet corner. For Jack and Lauren, the course of true love is not running smoothly. Can he restore order in the town before the neighbourhood watch vigilantes take justice into their own hands? Or are Jack's biggest worries much closer to home? Can Lauren's reporting remain impartial as her attraction to Jack grows? Or will her family's advice lead her completely astray?
Featuring Penwarra's 100th Show, a one-eyed goat and a galah named Gary, Wallaby Lane is a complete delight from one of Australia's favourite rural romance writers.
From country show baking to raising orphaned lambs, bestselling author Maya Linnell writes about the life she lives and loves. A keen bookworm, former rural journalist and radio presenter, Maya has six rural fiction titles published with Allen & Unwin - Wallaby Lane, Kookaburra Cottage, Paperbark Hill, Magpie's Bend, Bottlebrush Creek and Wildflower Ridge.
She lives with her family in rural Queensland, writes to the soundtrack of kookaburras, and relies on copious amounts of tea and chocolate to fuel her days at the keyboard.
Maya was shortlisted in the 2021, 2020 and 2019 Aus Romance Reader Association awards for categories including Favourite Australian Romance Author, Favourite Debut Author and Favourite Australian-set novel and her novels have consistently made bestseller lists and the Better Reading Top 100.
Lauren Bickford loved her job working on radio, always aiming higher. But she battled Patrice who loved to put Lauren down, as well as her own demons. She was determined though, to always do her best and with the upcoming 100th anniversary of the Penwarra Show, the interviews Lauren was doing with the locals, the stories she was uncovering, and the cookbook which was being made - one hundred recipes from one hundred contributors for the 100th anniversary - was gaining momentum and was hugely popular; Lauren was on a high.
Jack Crossley was back in Penwarra as the local cop and loving his return to the home town he'd grown up in. He'd returned when his sister Clem, with daughter Harriet, had come home to their family house; Jack and Clem's pop having gone into a nursing home. Jack had first encountered Lauren in the laundromat and when she went to Victoria for a three month stint with a different radio station, Jack housesat for her as his police residence wasn't finished. Lauren's galah, Gary, was loud, potty-mouthed and loveable - and it wasn't long before Jack had him wrapped around his little finger. As Jack and Lauren's relationship slowly evolved, Jack wondered if the past he refused to talk about would get in their way...
Wallaby Lane is another exceptional read by Aussie author Maya Linnell. Set in fictional Penwarra, South Australia - a mix of the famous Coonawarra and nearby Penola - and not far from Mount Gambier (where I lived through my school years and into adulthood - and met my husband) so much was familiar. Excellent characters, both human and animal, an enticing plot line and the excitement of the rural show kept me reading into the night. I thoroughly enjoyed this latest from Maya Linnell and look forward to next year's book. Highly recommended.
With thanks to Allen & Unwin AU for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
EXCERPT: 'But we like you living with us,' Harriet said, bringing water glasses to the table. 'Can't you stay forever?' 'Not sure it's Uncle Jack's dream setup, but he does own half the house, so it's his as much as it is ours. Stay as long as you want, Jack.' Clem was kinda right. If someone had told him eighteen months ago he'd be sharing a house with his sister, he would've frisked their pockets for drugs. But the gift of their grandparent's farmhouse combined with the Penwarra policing position and Clem's redundancy, had felt like three ducks had waddled into their lives and lined up in a millimetre-perfect row.
ABOUT 'WALLABY LANE': From interviewing local flower growers to receiving blue ribbons for her show baking, Lauren Bickford's genuine love for her hometown is almost as strong as her ambition to become a radio presenter. But is it enough to outweigh the series of on-air stuff-ups that have plagued her career?

MY THOUGHTS: Set in the fictional rural town of Penwarra in South Australia’s Limestone Coast this is a family drama highlighting mental health issues, post-natal depression, the delinquent youth problem so common in small towns, family relationships and workplace bullying. There's a side dish of romance to lighten the load.
I liked the characters in this book. They are all very human, making mistakes in both their personal and work lives and having to bear the consequences of their actions. This is a multi-generational story with Arthur and sister Jean representing the older generation, Clem and Jack in the middle, and Harriet the younger. Art is a bit of a meddler, but a good-hearted one who only wants the best for his niece and nephew and little Harriet. Harriet is a great character, saying just what she thinks with all the confidence of a six-year-old wondering why adults complicate so many things.
Jack is a good-hearted and sensible cop, but he has his own demons to conquer. A past betrayal has hit him hard and he finds it difficult to trust others in his personal life. Professionally he is caring and astute, evidenced by the way he deals with Cohen's and Sebastian's misdemeanours.
Lauren is a young woman with dreams and ambitions who comes from a very career orientated family, but every time she has her goal in sight, she shoots herself in the foot. She is a lovely warmhearted young woman, but does she have what it takes to climb to the top of her chosen career?
Some of the animals in this book are just as entrancing as the characters - Gaz (Gary) the Galah and a one-eyed goat are but two.
I liked that a lot of the storyline was centered around the Penwarra show's centenary celebrations. All the preparations in the buildup to the show are chronicled as well as the big day itself with its resulting tensions, triumphs, missing money and the 'cake war'! These fixtures have disappeared from a lot of small towns, my home-town included, and I enjoyed the memories reading this brought back.
And please do read the author's acknowledgements at the end, where Maya Linnell talks about her own experience with post-natal psychosis which she used to form Clem's back story, calling it 'the scariest and most dangerous thing (she's) ever experienced.'
This is my first book by Maya Linnell, but it won't be my last. Despite the 'heavy' topics, this was a fun read with great characters and a wonderful setting.

THE AUTHOR: From country show baking to raising orphaned lambs, bestselling author Maya Linnell writes about the life she lives and loves. A keen bookworm, former rural journalist and radio host, Maya also blogs. She lives in rural Victoria with a menagerie of animals, rambling gardens, three bookworms and the odd tiger snake or two.
DISCLOSURE: Thank you to Allen & Unwin via NetGalley for providing a digital ARC of Wallaby Lane by Maya Linnell for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions.
Lauren Bickford likes her job at the radio station in Mount Gambier, and she wants to be a presenter and even though the thought of being live on air makes her feel nervous. Her mother and sister are both very ambitious and they can’t understand why Lauren lives in a small country town, content being the assistant to the morning shows producer and she could do better. Loz adores her little pink cottage on Petticoat Lane, in Penwarra and her pet galah Gary and his colourful language.
Constable Jack Crossley has just been transferred to Penwarra and he's a former local, his pop Arthur owns Sunny Cross Farm, Jack’s sister Clem and six year old niece Harriet are living there. Jack knows bored teenagers get up to all kinds of trouble and it’s his job to pull them into line. Jack and Lauren meet, they are attracted to each other, but both work shifts and have been unlucky in love in the past and are they willing to take the risk?
Set during the year leading up to the towns 100th show, a huge event and milestone, it will have side shows and pony rides, competitions for baked goods and condiments, flower displays and it’s very competitive and who wouldn't want to win a blue ribbon. The town is buzzing with anticipation, residents want the place to look tidy, well presented and junk and graffiti free.
I received a copy of Wallaby Lane by Maya Linnell from Allen & Unwin and NetGalley in exchange for a review. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Linnell, I’m kicking myself for not discovering her wonderful and down to earth Aussie novel’s sooner and she’s one of Australia’s best rural romance writers and I can understand why. The narrative has interesting and relatable characters like Lauren and Jack, Arthur and Jean, Clem and Harriet, Sebastian, Cohen and Victor, April and Connor, and Gary the naughty galah, and it's set in my home state of South Australia.
The author is known for including social topics in her books and we need to show compassion and empathy towards people suffering from issues such as, hoarding, mental health and anxiety, post-natal depression and post-natal psychosis and in complicated and diverse families. Rescuing and caring for injured and sick and native animals and what to do and who to call.
The story showcases the Aussie way of life, community spirit, summing up living in a small country town to a tee, I live in one and it made me laugh out loud, five stars from me and I have already bought a copy of Kookaburra Cottage to read and enjoy with a cuppa.
I am always so excited when there is a new Maya Linnell book coming because I know I am going to love it and this one did not disappoint, we are back in Penwarra to catch up with old friends and get to know Lauren Bickford even more and meet the new cop Jack Crossley and it is the 100th Penwarra show, come along for some fun, romance and a fabulous story.
Lauren is loving her job as producer of the Rural AM radio show each morning, but her wish is to be the presenter, but there have been a few problems getting there for Lauren and now that the announcers job is up for grabs and the 100th Penwarra show is coming up Lauren is sure to have a chance with the fabulous ideas she has if only she can get her nerves under control.
Jack spent a lot of time in his youth living in the small wine growing community on The Limestone Coast and now he is back this time as the constable in town, he and his sister and niece have moved into his grandparent’s old sunflower farm and are looking towards the future he is happy to have left the city behind him. Soon Lauren and Jack are becoming close friends, with Jack House sitting and minding her pet galah, Gary and Jack is under some pressure from the mayor to curb what looks to be teenager angst in the form of graffiti and small annoyances, this sort of behaviour reminds Jack of a past he would much prefer to forget and jumps him to do everything he can do.
Lauren has thrown herself into doing everything she can for the show, with guest interviews regarding the special cookbook that is to be launched and talking to the locals about the entries they have for the show, there is so much cooking going on and Lauren is getting closer to Jack and his family but the pressure is coming from Lauren’s family will she be able to stand strong?
I loved this one from start to finish, Maya opens an emotional journey with Jack and Lauren, both having issues from their past that really need to talked about, add to that the excitement in the small town and the fabulous characters that we have met before in Kookaburra Cottage and the new ones introduced in this awesome story and you have a heart-warming story that will have you turning the pages, shedding some tears, smiling and cheering them on.
Maya Linnell has such a fabulous voice for rural romance, she brings out the true small town settings and makes the reader feel like they have been transported into the heart of the town and characters, I do highly recommend this one it is a must read.
My thanks to Allen & Unwin for my copy to read and review.
Wallaby Lane is Maya Linnell's sixth novel, however it is the first one I have read. And yes, the others are all sitting on my shelf waiting to be read.
Lauren Bickford is working at the local radio station, bullied at work and belittled by her mother, she is losing confidence in the work she loves.
Jack Crossley has returned to Penwarra to keep an eye on his sister and niece. He has taken a post at the local police station.
Maya Linnell calls on her knowledge and experience of local country communities and the spirit that keeps these communities alive to pen a story that is wholesome, heartwarming and engaging.
In Wallaby Lane, Maya includes her love of animals and the humour they can invoke with Gary the Galah and the local goats. I also enjoyed the inclusion of the animal rescue centre and the important work they do caring for and rehoming injured animals. Maya also includes many areas centric to small communities, such as bored youths acting up and the damage caused by local gossip.
The fledgling romance between Jack and Lauren is wonderfully balanced with lots of baking, a community cookbook and the Penwarra 100th anniversary show.
Just one tiny complaint, for me, there were probably too many roadblocks to Lauren and Jack's relationship. They both had old demons to come to terms with and at times instead of supporting each other they opened a wider rift. I loved that I still got the HEA and the warm fuzzies that romance reads deliver.
Thank you Allen & Unwin for sending us a copy to read and review. It’s that time of year again when us lucky readers get a new, warm and welcoming Maya Linnell rural read. Wallaby Lane is the next book in the new series, this one being Lauren and Jack’s story. Lauren loves her hometown and wants to be the best radio presenter she can but a few on air mistakes could jeopardise it all. Jack is the new cop in the district and knows there can trouble at the drop of a hat as he grew up here. When Lauren and Jack bump into each other, the love fires burn. Then life, mishaps and misconceptions get in the way. Can they both get their happy ever after……. Maya continues her reign as one of this country’s great voices in the rural fiction genre. With a strong plot, characters some new, some familiar, community country spirit, an inviting setting, some furry friends and love being in the air, this latest provincial adventure is a delightful read. Indulge, enjoy, adore, delight and be rewarded. Prepare to be embraced with a hug, handshake, howdy and glowing hospitality with this charming tale.
Lauren Bickford has settled into her cottage in the South Australian Limestone Coast town of Penwarra. Sharing her home is Gary, a Galah with a salty and colourful repetoire. Lauren's position with the local radio station is both a dream come true and a nightmare as stuff-ups plague her and threaten her career and ambition.
Senior Sergeant Jack Crossley, new cop in town, is no stranger to Penwarra. Jack has opted for the quieter life of a country cop in a single cop station but finds his time is cut out with mischief from the local teens and the vigilantes who decide to take matters into their own hands. The town is building up to the 100th Penwarra Show and emotions run deep for the residents of the town. Jack has moved back to Penwarra to support his sister, single mum to Harriet and his grandfather Art who now lives in an aged care home. Jack, Clem and Harriet have taken over Art's country property which was previously a sunflower farm. While he is waiting for his Police house to be completed, Jack meets Lauren and for a time takes up residence in her cottage when she is seconded through her job to another town for a period of time.
This a story of family; it is a story of a country town where everyone knows everyone and whatever happens in the town impacts on all the residents. There is the local coffee supplier who is also the town matchmaker. Along with Gary the Galah, we have a one-eyed goat and numerous wildlife creatures who are supported by carers.
Maya Linnell's stories contain a warmth of love and caring and this one does not disappoint. This is also a story that contains mental health issues as some of the characters deal with their demons. Maya's treatment of these issues is caring and sensitive.
I was delighted to connect once again with April and Connor from Kookaburra Cottage and a small cameo from Maya's previous collection of stories. Always a treat to catch up with characters we have previously met.
Thank you Maya Linnell, your story made me laugh and cry and thoroughly enjoy the view of country life with all its elements. Something I am very familiar with as I grew up in a small country town.
Thank you Netgalley for the privilege of an early reading of a story that has delighted me and one I highly recommend to other readers who will love it as I do.
⭐️4 Stars⭐️ Maya Linnell always gives her readers a superb, down to earth and heartwarming rural romance story and Wallaby Lane is no exception. Wallaby Lane is radio themed and I loved the way the story is written with heart and humour and it features cooking and animal rescues.
The story is set in the fictional rural town of Penwarra in South Australia’s wine growing region on the Limestone Coast. Lauren Bickford’s ambition is to become the radio presenter at her local radio station although sometimes she gets nervous and tongue tied. Lauren is currently employed as a producer there.
There’s a new cop in town named Jack Crossley who has returned to his hometown along with his sister and young niece and they’ve moved into their grandparent’s old sunflower farm. When Jack meets Lauren an attraction grows but will a relationship grow?
There’s plenty of drama and I enjoyed the escapades of the talking galah Gary and there’s even one-eyed goat!
There are a range of interesting issues covered in the story the focus was not solely on romance but more on family and Lauren trying to break into becoming a radio presenter. There’s themes of mental health, post natal psychosis, injured wildlife, delinquent youth, community spirit, show day, baking, gardening, swimming and family issues.
It’s always a joy to read a Maya Linnell novel.

Thank you so much to the lovely people Allen & Unwin for a copy of the book.
Wallaby Lane by Aussie author Maya Linnell was such a delightful read. When you read a book by this author you get a real feel for country towns and community spirit. I loved this book from start to finish and I can’t wait to see what she writes next. Highly recommended.
With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for my digital copy to read and review.
Lauren Bickford has an ambition to become a radio presenter, but the recent series of on-air stuff-ups might set her back. Jack Crossley is the new cop in town in Penwarra, having traded his city beat for a slower pace. For Jack and Lauren, the course of true love is not running smoothly. Can he restore order in the town? Can Lauren's reporting remain impartial as her attraction to Jack grows?
After loving Maya’s last book (and the first one of hers I had read), I was so excited for this one. And I wasn’t disappointed! Both Lauren and Jack are likeable and I love seeing their chemistry blooming on the pages.
Despite coming across as a very confident woman, Lauren turned out to have insecurities, which made her character super relatable. I was fully invested in her career journey, and wished she had more support in her job. She wasn’t set for success in her jobs, and was often left alone to deal with her struggles. Her resilience was definitely admirable.
Jack had his own insecurities, and it was so good to see how they both had to ‘work’ for their relationship, as it didn’t just happen easily. His interactions with Gary the Galah stole the show for me!
Penwarra’s 100th show was the cherry on top, and it was lovely to see returning characters. Looking forward to Maya’s next book!
(Thanks to Allen & Unwin for a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review)
Maya Linnell quickly became one of my favourite rural fiction writers, having absolutely loved the McIntyre Sisters series.
I have just finished reading the NetGalley arc and it’s battling with Magpie’s Bend for my all time favourite Maya Linnell novel.
Set in Penwarra, we reconnect with the locals that we were introduced to in Kookaburra Cottage, Lauren is a local, and has strong ambitions to be a radio presenter. Jack is new to town as he takes up his position at the local police station. It’s inevitable that their paths will cross in both a professional and potentially romantic way…
I love how Maya weaves some of her real life passions into her stories, such as baking and rural shows. Her stories are always written with such heart and humour I couldn’t help but have a big smile on my face while reading this one and I may have preformed a little jig when I finished as I just know readers are going to love this one just as much as I have.
It is the pitch-perfect rural romance that everyone will be falling in love with this autumn.
Wallaby Lane is a fabulous small town rural romance. Based in a community full of colourful characters it is the perfect holiday read.
It’s a slow burn, strangers to friends to lovers romance centered around Lauren, an aspiring radio presenter, and Jack, the new cop in the small town of Penwarra. We get their dual perspectives as the story unfolds.
This was my first Maya Linnell book and I am now off to read her full back catalogue. She has a writing style that completely captures the essence of small towns and rural communities in Australia that really resonated with me. I highly recommend Wallaby Lane as your next rural romance read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Allen & Unwin for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Absolutely loved my time in Wallaby Lane!! Maya Linnell’s novels are just auto reads for me and I just love them! Loved the community I found here, love Lauren and Jack, loved the pink cottage and all the baking and gardening, loved the wildlife sanuaury and the recycled metal art, loved all the real issues I could have just let wash over me..loved it all so much!!! Perfect tree change armchair travel
Thanks to NetGalley, Allen and Unwin, and the author for the chance to read this book.
Maya Linnell's book are satisfying to read - they have a nice happy ending, but it's not boring to get there. The characters and their relationships are enjoyable to watch, grow, and evolve. This was an easy story to fall into and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Welcome back to the Penwarra….a small town that will open its arms and an annual show to rival the best of them.
This delightful tale is told from the point of the two main characters, continually switching between them, which gives you a lovely insight to the mindset of each character and the weaknesses that they are both trying to make up for.
Lauren is a radio producer trying to make it as an on-air presenter, but her biggest obstacle is her self-doubt. Jack is the new cop in the town that he grew up in, trying to do his best and help his sister, niece and grandfather along the way.
As the story progresses there is an undeniable attraction between Jack and Lauren, but not everything is smooth sailing on any front. Not their careers and not their personal lives.
Maya’s skill in creating this amazing area and the people within it, is second to none, and you can just imagine picking up a coffee from Jean, taste testing the delicious baking, checking out Archie’s giant pumpkins and experiencing all the sights, sounds and dramas of Penwarra’s 100th show.
I feel in love with a number of characters, and high on that list was Harriett, Jack’s bundle of energy and adorable roller-skating niece, as well as Gary. Who knew a two-toned galah could be so colourful.
All is not always roses and sunshine in this book. There is sadness, heartbreak, assumptions and accusations, as well as a multitude of mental health issues. However, watching the characters come together as a community and family, and tackling these issues and growing together, gives a depth to this story that had me enthralled and feeling a range of emotions along the way.
I loved my journey back to Penwarra, and although there are a lot of characters from Maya’s previous book, Kookaburra Cottage, it is not necessary for you to have read it to enjoy Wallaby Lane. I will say though, that it will enhance your experience, allowing you a little more insight to the characters and the community, plus it’s a great excuse to read another fantastic book.
This is an awesome book that is full of funny moments and moments that will tug at your heartstrings, but definitely worth the read.

Maya Linnell is the Queen of Feel Good Reading. Her books are an ode to rural Australia, to simple and pleasurable living and they always feel like a warm and cosy hug.
WALLABY LANE perhaps reveals even more of Australian small town life than any of Maya’s previous books with a plot which explores community radio, an annual rural show and policing in regional Australia.
This book also had some heavier topics and I liked that Maya wasn’t afraid to make some tough calls about the directions some of the storylines & character development headed.
Another Maya Linnell book that’s guaranteed to have you considering a tree change. Charming, sweet & totally indulgent, WALLABY LANE is a truly delightful read!
I received a gifted copy of this book from the publisher.
There’s one thing I can depend on with Maya Linnell’s books - there’s never a question about how I’m going to feel at the end. Happy, all the colours of happy!
Wallaby Lane is no exception focusing on the story of Lauren a budding radio announcer (producer but wanting to turn her hand but has a serious case of the yips) and Jack, a member of Penwarra’s local constabulary.
From the country show, to complex family dynamics Wallaby Lane gives you the feel for a thriving rural community in South Australia. It’s colourful, rich and sometimes downright insular with everyone knowing everyone’s business whilst simultaneously looking out for their own.
Thanks to Maya and Allen and Unwin for gracing me with the joyous gift that is Wallaby Lane.
Maya Linnell i just loved Wallaby Lane! What a beautiful story about Jack & Lauren, mixed in together with the Penwarra Show, a little rural farming, and some great characters! A must read for all fans of Maya Linnell.
3.5 stars for me. It was a cute, Australian rural romance. Which I absolutely loved instead of the usual big city cliches. However it’s just not really up my alley because it was a classic love story. Whereas I prefer fast paced, plot heavy this was easy and a little slower. I felt like there was too much filler for me because I’m not in it for all the little details I’m just in it for the vibes and the chemistry. Which these characters had a lot of. I liked them together but didn’t like them individually. I wish Lauren stood up for herself more especially against meanie Patrice. And I wish Jack wasn’t such a walled off man. He didn’t fight for them like I wish he had of. Clem and April were my favourite characters. Clems mental health battles especially post-natal psychosis was SUCH AN IMPORTANT STORYLINE! I hated stupid man who shall not be named! But I’m glad she didn’t have any regrets. She gave him a second chance and of course he was stupid and hadn’t changed. April was so supportive and just a great best friend. I did love that this fictional town was inspired by real ones and there were real ones in which I’ve been to so I felt like I was more engrossed in the scenes. Overall I enjoyed the book it just isn’t something I’d usually read so I didn’t LOVE it.

Oh, what a delightful, feel-good tale! Maya, you've done it again.
It's a big welcome back to the South Australian Limestone Coast town of Penwarra, and hello to some familiar faces. Including radio producer Lauren Bickford, who is our female lead.
Lauren loves her job. She gets to dive into the communities heart and soul but wants to move from behind the scenes. The breakfast presenting role is up for grabs, but Lauren's lack of experience and nerves may jeopardise her chances.
Opportunities lay ahead for our Lauren, including a secondment and the chance of a self produced and presented podcast. All she needs to do is be brave and leap. Easier said than done, though. Especially when you constantly live in the ambitious shadows of your mum and sister.
Luckily, Lauren has support on her side. For years, best friend Alice has been her biggest cheerleader. That position is about to be usurped, though, with the arrival of Senior Sergeant Jack Crossley. The handsome newcomer has caught the eye of many female locals, but the cop only has his directed at Lauren. And the feelings mutual.
There's a whole heap to love about Jack. He's kind, caring, and dotes on his grandfather, sister, and niece. Jack desperately feels that pull to make everything better and willingly doles out second chances. If only he was much kinder to himself and pulled down those walls that he's built around him. Like Lauren, he has to work on not stressing over things that's out of his control. That's why they are a perfect match even when things go pear-shaped.
In the background, community spirit steals the show. With the Penwarra Show celebrating its hundredth anniversary, everyone is vying for that blue ribbon. Across the district, cake tins and biscuit trays are in the oven, flowers and veg are tended to, and animals carefully groomed. There's nothing that could possibly ruin the excitement - except for two bored teens who need that little bit of extra attention. It's a good job that our friendly cop is the one to see their potential, right?
A huge shout out goes to the numerous furry and feathered friends that steal the limelight. I don't think I've ever met a galah so cheeky (cheers, Gary) or a one-eyed goat so cute! Not to mention the various wildlife rescues that Jack and Sebastian come across. Adorableness overload!!
Just finished this and I absolutely loved it!!! Maya never disappoints me with her gorgeous rural romances, and it was so lovely to see characters from previous books mentioned again!
Lauren Bickford loves living in small town Penwarra and producing the local radio show, but she dreams of being a host and is working hard to get there. Jack Crossley is the new cop in town, but he spent time in Penwarra as a kid with his grandparents, and now his grandad is in a home, he and his sister Clementine, along with niece Harriet have returned to live in their homestead. The annual Penwarra show is coming up, and it’s the 100th year of its running, and Lauren is busy doing interviews with the locals and is on a career high. Jack is enjoying being in the country, and his spirits soar when he meets and connects with Lauren. But they both have pasts, and if they don’t open up to each other they might not be able to move forward.
I ripped through this in a day. I absolutely loved the gorgeous Limestone Coast setting; after falling in love with it in Kookaburra Cottage I was so pleased to return. Adorable local kid Archie was back, and Harriet was such an adorable wee character too. Maya has such a knack for making you feel as though you know her characters and they always feel so real to me. Lauren’s pet galah Gary was genuinely the BEST animal character ever - he was hilarious! I did want to punch Patrice and Adam in the face though…BLOODY PATRICE RILED ME 😂
I could go on and on about everything there is to love in this book, but I’ll stop here and just encourage you to pick a copy up for yourself and enjoy!
Maya certainly has a great writing skill on country towns with lots of different aspects of living, growing up, single mothers and wildlife but this book delved into mental health which I loved as a Health Support worker a lot of my clients cherish this great read.
A book which relates to so many aspects of our lives whether its city or country or boats or aeroplanes our lives are intertwined in so many varied ways with great scenarios and aspects of living, working, cooking, shows, entertaining live stories of radio and everything in between.
I recently finished reading the book "Wallaby Lane" by Maya Linnel. The book is a rural romance set in Penwarra, South Australia. It revolves around the life of Lauren Bickford, who works at the local radio station, and Senior Sergeant Jack Crossley, who is new to the town's police station. The story focuses on a small country town community and family with the ups and downs of life in a small town. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the love story spans over 12 months, making it more realistic.
Jack has recently moved to Penwarra to offer support to his sister, Clem, who is a single mother to her daughter, Harriet, and to their grandfather, Art. Spending many summers with their grandparents in the countryside, Jack is delighted to be back in town and the farm he remembers.
Lauren Bickford leads a content life in Penwarra, living in her charming pink cottage on Petticoat Lane and working as the producer of the local radio station's morning show. However, her mother doesn't think of the town as a good place for her daughter to showcase her talent and feels that Lauren is wasting her time there.
This book is full of inspirational stories that will captivate you. It's set in a small country town, full of drama, good-doers, troublemakers, kindness, and most importantly, community spirit and the Aussie way of life. And let's not forget the delicious food that will make you want to bake your heart out!
Well, another Maya Linnell book to add to my collection - Wallaby Lane, which was released in June. Once again, a very engaging, easy to read, beautiful story from Maya. I still stand by my comment that any of Maya‘s stories could be made into a Netflix series and I would happily watch. The characters and locations are perfect for the screen as I would love to see them come to life.
This is the second in her series that is set in the Limestone Coast region, her first book being about April and Connor. Wallaby Lane tells Lauren and Jack’s story - Lauren is April’s Best Friend. Lauren works for the local radio station while Jack has returned to the area as the local policeman. We have a range of supporting characters who are very much a part of the storyline Jack’s sister Clem, his niece Harriet, grandfather Arthur and Aunt Jean. Lauren also has her Mother Gabrielle and Sister Tahnee whom she can never seem to impress.
Will the course of true love run smoothly, or will there be hiccups along the way?
Without giving any spoilers, I also find that Maya is able to shine the spotlight on sensitive topics within her stories that people can relate to or may have experienced themselves which is another reason her books are so popular and well liked. Every June I eagerly await her latest release and I loved this one especially Gary the galah. I highly recommend you add this book to your must read list.
I loved it! There’s just something engaging about the way Maya Linnell welcomes you into the lives of her characters that makes it so hard to stop reading and do the things you had planned to do, should be doing. The wholesome feel good romances that are not without heartache and the challenges the characters face as they live their lives, take you on a journey that you are reluctant to stop when the end inevitably comes.
What really won me over beyond the above mentioned are things that are dear to my heart; a bird pet that is part of the family, wildlife rescue and care; and acknowledging mental health issues, and getting help just as you would with any other health condition.
Set in the same locale as Maya Linnell‘s previous book “Kookaburra Cottage” and mentioning some of those characters, this story, set in the (fictional) town of Penwarra, near Mount Gambier in South Australia, features Lauren Bickford, a radio show producer and Jack Crossley, the newly appointed local police officer. Each has family obligations and issues as well as broader issues, Lauren with a high achieving and demanding family and Jack with a mentally fragile sister. Wildlife care, hoarding, community fractions, petty teenage vandalism, community policing, country shows, radio, bullying in the workplace, wonderful friendships and a lovely setting all have something to offer in this engaging story.
Loved this book by Maya. This time we travel over to a fictional small town called Penwarra, which is loosely based on the town of Penola in the Coonawarra area of South Australia. This time it’s Lauren’s story who works at the radio station and is waiting for her big break to come along. It’s also the story of Jack who has moved to the area to man the small police station as the only cop there. The story highlights the annual country show, which was brilliant to read about, which I’m sure the author has used her own experiences to depict the cooking competitions there in.
There is drama, friendship, romance and community in this great book. I’ve read all of Mayas novels and they are like food for the soul. Highly recommended for readers of rural fiction and women’s fiction.
