Holy moly! This was another Harlequin from a mixed box of romance novels I bought off Etsy a few months ago. I DNF this one at page 70. So the vibe of this “book” is Jane Eyre and The Secret Garden had a baby and it is Blackthorne. Nothing wrong with either of those brilliant classic novels, but the plot of this knock off is rushed and poorly executed. The FMC and MMC both have some serious personality development issues. She has too many quirks that are in direct opposition. She’s sweet and demure and aggressive and argumentative. His problem is his flatness. He’s judgmental and thoughtless and just kind of a dick for whatever dumb unexplained reason. wow…a MMC who’s an ass. shocking…. If that wasn’t enough to get me to stop reading, the !two! SA within the first 70 pages did the trick. Both the MMC and villain are so aggressive, and the poor, spinster FMC is so irresistible, the men barely speaking more than two sentences to the FMC have each separately come to the conclusion they can’t keep their mitts to themselves to put it delicately. I guess 3rd wave feminism didn’t apply to period romance novels written in the late 90s. I feel gross for having this book in my home.

This book moves at a quick clip and it takes place about 1662 in England. Olivia has lost both her parents in an accident and Olivia's only remaining relatives are underwhelmed to receive her. When the lecherous son, Wyatt, assaults her -- literally as she arrives, Olivia knows she needs a new haven. So she takes the job as a nursemaid in Cornwall. When she arrives, she's shocked again -- by the brooding, unhappy nature of the home.

Olivia takes over the tending of Liat, ward of Lord Stamford of Blackthorne. Stamford is also moody and unhappy. His brother was in an accident and does not speak or walk. Stamford's wife died under unusual circumstances, at the same time the younger brother was injured.

It doesn't take long for Olivia to change things for the better. Then, King Charles comes for a visit and the whole story comes to an interesting conclusion. I think this would be called a gothic tale because of the time, the Cornwall scenery, and the grim opening chapters. I don't usually read books this far back but this was definitely happy serendipity. Overall score = 4.5 stars.

This was a great read. I loved our hero and heroine. Olivia comes into a sullen, oppressive environment and slowly brings her employer/lover, his charge, and his broken brother into the light.
There are several mysteries shrouding the story, the crucial one being what happened to our hero's (Quenton) brother.
My only complaint is that Bennett (the brother) and Minerva (his caretaker) could have had a more developed storyline in the book.

I read Highland barbarian before this book and I find there are many similarities between two books.

1) As usual evil character tried to deflower heroine but rescued by others
2) Heroine was living under same roof as Hero
3) King or Queen visited at hero's castle
4) Heroine hid at library to hear conversation between hero and King/ Queen

I had to skip many pages but overall I would give 3 stars.

Imagined and cherished every word of the book, what a piece of art I have concluded my dark year, experiencing undesirable incidents like my country (Afghanistan) falling in the demons’ hand. It boggled my mind, the scenery, and the world created by the author throughout my imagination.

Entretenido e ingenioso.
