Elora Walker is a vanguard recruit, someone who protects people from Dark Seekers, and wants to be a best and make her mother proud. When Elora is accepted into Nikolia Compound she thought she would be just like everyone else and be free of her mother’s pressure. Especially as she has a group of friends inclucing, her childhood friend Aaron, and Teya, Matthew and Zak. However, there is a big secret in her past which links her to a faceless stranger, and the Vanguards are in danger.
Foretold is an enjoyable paranormal novel, with action and romance. This book is about the battle between good and evil but I did find it a bit slow. I felt that the world of Vanguards, especially who the Ignari were, was not clearly explained.
Elora is a likeable and strong heroine who is relatable in some aspects as everyone has felt the pressure to live up to someone’s expectations, but I did find she was just too good everything she tries. I liked Teya and her back story, and I feel it may play a more important part in later books. However, I feel that we did not get to know Matthew as well as Elora’s other friends, as all I really know about him was his powers not his personality. Romance wise I preferred Aaron more than Zak as I felt they had more chemistry and I felt he always wanted what was best for her.
I guessed what was going to happen at the end but it was still enjoyable and I look forward to reading the next book Reflected. I would recommend Foretold to fans of Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead.

I was totally drawn in by the cover for this book. I mean, look at it, it's gorgeous! And yes, I do judge a book by it's cover, so writers, don't get skimpy when it comes to the very first impression anyone will ever have of your story.
I'm glad that I chose to review this one though, as a very much so enjoyed it.
The story is told from first person perspective engaging the reader straight away with the main character, Elora, telling the story as a letter to her child. Early on we know that Elora is special and her life will take many dark turns before the story is over.
I'm not really a big fan of first person perspective. In this case, however, with the story being told as something that's already happened, it works.
Since I'm not big on rambly reviews, I'll skip to the bullet points.
The story is engaging and well paced.
The characters are likable and Elora is a character that a reader can care about.
The bad guys were a bit campy, but that's also because I really don't care for vampires or exhibitional speaking. I realize that in first person perspective it's necessary for the bad guys to spill the beans about what their big end game is, but it's still not my favorite way to have the antagonist approached.
All in all, if you're a fan of fantasy and/or strong female characters, I highly recommend this book.

Foretold by Joanne Kershaw is the first book in the series, the Vanguard Legacy. My first instinct was to categorize this tale of good versus evil and immediately, Harry Potter and The Vampire Academy came to mind.
Yes, there are similarities in structure and plot with the two BUT Foretold holds its own in a world of stories about the war between the dark and light.
I was immediately drawn to the character of Elora. Raised by her Vanguard mother who is overbearing in her protectiveness yet distant, even cold, Elora has always tried to live up to the high expectations of Nina and feels she never quite hits the mark. But she’s also fortunate to have her best friend Aaron, who is her pillar of support and helps her shoulder the burden of being Nina's daughter.
A Vanguard is a protector of the Ignari, fighting to protect the innocent against the evil Dark Seekers. Like her mother before her, Elora will be pinned a Vanguard and live the rest of her life serving selflessly in her duty. But there is a twist, Elora is also a twin and a Reflected, her destiny foretold centuries before as part of a prophecy that proclaims Elora will be the on the side of light who will fight her sister, the bearer of darkness in a battle that will either save or destroy humanity.
Foretold charts Elora’s attempts to understand who she is and what her end goal is as a Vanguard and ultimately, as a Reflected. She begins to understand not only the true meaning of her destiny but what the outcome of her choices and actions could mean for others. It is a real possibility that not only could her life have a tragic ending but her destiny can mean insurmountable suffering for everyone she loves and those she protects. Heavy stuff for a girl of sixteen.
What I like about Elora’s personality is her determination. She has her moments of self-doubt and panic but Elora always comes through and it's her ability to do the right thing despite the mounting pressures she faces that makes her not only a great heroine but also a true friend. She garners loyalty and love in equal measure because she never backs down from a challenge, only serving the best interest of others around her.
There is a romantic angle that I enjoyed not only because it added dimension and drama but because it was more about the emotion of loving someone and the feelings that come with the bond being formed and broken. Elora and Zak’s love story flourishes quickly but faces test after test until it seems no amount of love can save these two from heartbreak.
Kershaw is a talented writer who has created a storyline that is both imaginative and sustaining. Her best writing happens when she is world building. Elora’s world is filled with a rich history of Vanguard laws and traditions and Kershaw is adept at revealing background and weaving it with Elora’s destiny in a way that is interesting as it is telling.
I also enjoyed the cast of characters that made up Elora’s world including her circle of friends (Aaron, Teya and Mathew) as well as the quirky Sisters and Ava, her Magicae teacher.
Let me go back to the world Kershaw has created. This world is filled with Vampires, the Magicae, the Vanguard and Spirit Readers but let me not forget the Dark Seekers, evil entities that are rather remarkable as far as bad guys go. Each being has unique characteristics creating a more vivid, well-rounded storyline.
I swept through Foretold within a day, enjoying every peak and valley of Elora’s story. Full of action and adventure against a backdrop of mystery and prophecy with a touch of romance that is amplified in Reflected, I thoroughly enjoyed Joanne Kershaw’s Foretold.
My rating? A 5-star must read for YA enthusiasts but also for readers who enjoy a well-written story full of creativity and imagination!

When I was given a copy of this book, I leapt at the chance to read and review it. The cover is brilliant and striking. Like it or not we DO judge books by their covers and it is good to see that this one hit the spot.
I read my fair share of YA fiction and one thing I always want to see are portrayals of strong, independent women. For me, the characters that tend to say with you longest are the ones I identify with most, whether they are wizards, athletes, or just regular people. Having someone to root for who is worthy of my respect is key.
As a fan of fantasy fiction, I was drawn to the main character, Elora, for being a resilient female character. She has a deep, dark family legacy that encroaches upon her world. Her mother, Nina (a strong woman in her own right) knows this and understands but is standoffish in her treatment of Elora. Sometimes, as all parents understand, you have to just raise them right and let them make their own way in the world.
Though this book is full of action, Elora’s journey is primarily an inward one. Adolesence itself is very much an inward journey so I felt that this kept in line quite well with the age of the protagonist (16ish).
The secondary characters are charming as well. I’d like to dive deeper into them down the line. When you can craft characters worthy of their own spin-off series, then you know you’ve done solid work.
Recommended for teens, tweens, and anyone who appreciates the YA fantasy genre.

I finished this YA Paranormal series and can't stop thinking about the story. It's similar to Twilight, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and The Mortal Instrument series. It's like them but very original in its own world crisis and endearing characters. With a perfect balance of familiar and unfamiliar you are inducted into a world focused on training their children to fight against evil. Elora is in Vanguard training with fellow classmates Aaron, who is her best friend; Matthew a Magicae who is learning to be a spirit reader; and Teya a vampire who is training as a forensic. All of them are learning how to defeat the Dark Seekers. Elora's mother is one the best Vanguard's and has returned to the training compound. Elora thinks her mom only came to keep an eye on her. The relationship between them has always been bad but the secrets and lies start to come out and Elora doesn't know who she can trust. Thankful for her friends and new boyfriend Zak, who's a senior trainee, they try to figure out what Elora's visions mean. With Elora's special talent her group is placed in an accelerated training class. When all "hell" breaks loose Elora has to face her family secret.

A short disclaimer- this book was NOT written for me. I am a 31 year old male, more comfortable in the company of Jason Bourne or Jack Reacher than Harry Potter or Bella Swan. A story written in first person perspective and told through a female protagonist typically does little for me.
That said, Foretold is an entertaining yarn threaded through a well-developed paranormal setting. Mrs. Kershaw walks an exacting line in her coming of age tale about a young woman who must balance multiple facets of her life while simultaneously becoming part of a supernatural team of guardians. It is a successful formula, and the author pulls it off with aplomb. The main character, Elora, is believable and consistent. She is brave, she makes mistakes. In all, she is a sixteen year old girl in extraordinary circumstances.
Young adults will be swept in by the fresh take and the skilled descriptive prowess evident throughout. The cliffhanger ending was rather abrupt, but it does leave the reader wanting for more.
I am certain to collect the entire Vanguard Legacy series. In a few years, I'll hand them off to my daughter, who will likely enjoy them.

Enthralling. Gripping. Captivating. Fascinating.
There are many adjectives that could be used to describe Elora's story, but none would truly describe Joanne Kershaw's Foretold.
An exciting book that kept me guessing until the very end. Shocking twists that make the reader feel true emotion towards the lives of the characters unfolding within the pages in front you.
Elora's world is one full of bravery and hope. They are the people who would literally save the world without us humans knowing. It's so believable that it could even be real and none of us know anything about it. After all, the Vanguards are there to save us all from evil.
I was kept on the edge of my seat, wanting to know more, right up until the end. The characters are so well thought through and planned that I just know this series is going to continue being brilliant.

It is always a good sign when the prologue leaves you wanting and you just have to continue reading the book to find out more. This book did that and it lived up to expectations. It had practically everything you could wish for in a fantasy saga novel. Love, betrayal, history, prophesy and magic.
This is the first book in a series and does well in setting up the story for other books to follow. It is the story of Elora Walker and how she was born to bring about darkness or light to the world, good versus evil.
Elora is brought up by an overbearing mother that had previously been a vanguard and who expected Elora to follow in her footsteps. Her father had died when she was very young.
As she reaches maturity Elora is sent for Vanguard training where she meets others like her and not like her. Everyone with their own special set of skills. It is here that she meets the love of her life, grows closer to her mother, begins to become tormented by visions and uncovers secrets kept since she was a child.
Thoroughly enjoyed this booked and couldn't wait to dive into the next.

Elora is a strong female lead in this school story. She is a Vanguard recruit who had been raised and trained by her mother to be the very best. She has the typical rag tag group of friends with varying abilities that help her along the way. I couldn't quite understand the setting (post apocalyptic maybe?), especially the deal with the difference between the Vanguard and the Ignari.
All in all, it was an enjoyable, well paced read with some interesting characters and the cliff hanger at the end made me want to read the next book.

this book is written from the perspectuve of the main character, Elora, writing a letter to her child. due to this it is told in the past which makes it a lot easier to read than it could have been as Flora knows what happened when she is writing the story.
The story itself is very well written and kept me captivated throughout and I loved the way it all tied together at the end.

OMG, I loved this book, this reminded me so much of the House of night novels, by Pc and Kristen Cast, I hope that is a compliment to the author because it is one, I so can’t wait to read the next one, I only stopped reading when I had to take the dog out, then I was straight back to it, The writing was brilliant, The plot was fantastic, The characters were amazing, I loved Elora Walker, our brave heroine, she was inspirational, she was a very complex character, who had major parent issues but as the book progresses you can see why, don’t want to give too many spoilers, I love the love interest, Zak, he sounded so yummy, I don’t want to ruin the story for anyone else who wants to read it, so all I will say is, get it, Her best friend Aaron who has a major crush on her, Teya, the vampire she befriends at the compound, Mathew the magic wielder, Elora and him have an unbelievable connection, that relates to her birth, they were all brilliantly written, it was one of the best I have read in a while, I loved that it was set in a school environment, all the different persona’s the vanguards, the vampires, the magic wielders, it makes for a great read, I would gladly let my daughter read this no worries, I won’t give too much away but WOW what a surprise the ending was, I was not expecting that one, I am really looking forward to reading the second book in the series, I need to find out what happens next to Elora and her faithful friends, I give this book 5/5, highly recommended

OMG, I loved this book, this reminded me so much of the House of night novels, by Pc and Kristen Cast, I hope that is a compliment to the author because it is one, I so can’t wait to read the next one, I only stopped reading when I had to take the dog out, then I was straight back to it, The writing was brilliant, The plot was fantastic, The characters were amazing, I loved Elora Walker, our brave heroine, she was inspirational, she was a very complex character, who had major parent issues but as the book progresses you can see why, don’t want to give too many spoilers, I love the love interest, Zak, he sounded so yummy, I don’t want to ruin the story for anyone else who wants to read it, so all I will say is, get it, Her best friend Aaron who has a major crush on her, Teya, the vampire she befriends at the compound, Mathew the magic wielder, Elora and him have an unbelievable connection, that relates to her birth, they were all brilliantly written, it was one of the best I have read in a while, I loved that it was set in a school environment, all the different persona’s the vanguards, the vampires, the magic wielders, it makes for a great read, I would gladly let my daughter read this no worries, I won’t give too much away but WOW what a surprise the ending was, I was not expecting that one, I am really looking forward to reading the second book in the series, I need to find out what happens next to Elora and her faithful friends, I give this book 5/5, highly recommended

I finished this YA Paranormal series and can't stop thinking about the story. It's similar to Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and The Mortal Instrument series. It's like them but very original in its own world crisis and endearing characters. With a perfect balance of familiar and unfamiliar you are inducted into a world focused on training their children to fight against evil. Elora is in Vanguard training with fellow classmates Aaron, who is her best friend; Matthew a Magicae who is learning to be a spirit reader; and Teya a vampire who is training as a forensic. All of them are learning how to defeat the Dark Seekers. Elora's mother is one the best Vanguard's and has returned to the training compound. Elora thinks her mom only came to keep an eye on her. The relationship between them has always been bad but the secrets and lies start to come out and Elora doesn't know who she can trust. Thankful for her friends and new boyfriend Zak, who's a senior trainee, they try to figure out what Elora's visions mean. I had this series brought to my attention thanks to Dark World Books and, after watching the trailer promoted by the Publisher, I had no choice but to get my hands on the first book. The blurb itself is very catchy and has already me wondering what a Vanguard is and wanting to know more about this secret.
As I delved into the story, I got to know Elora, her mother, her friends and what role they all play. They got me immediately hooked and I devoured the novel over the weekend.
The world that Kershaw has created is complex but understandable, as well as deep, believable characters that you cannot help but care about. Except for Elora's mother, of course, whom I really despised. The only other negative aspect, in my opinion, is the relationship between Elora and Zak. I found it too rushed and therefore not that real. I mean, I can understand the physical attraction, but when you blurt your life out to somebody and you discover almost nothing in return, that's when it gets shady. I had alarms going off in my head screaming 'DANGER! DANGER!' whenever those two were together.
However, after the massive cliffhanger at the end (seriously what the hell??!! Things cannot be left like this!) I could not end up not adoring the book. I'm really happy I have book #2 already in my hands, and I suggest you all give Vanguard Legacy a try, you won't be disappointed!

This was a wonderful book to read. It just seemed to get more and more exciting with each paged I turned, to the point I just wasn't able to put it down till the end, and the ending just left me wanting more, in a good and exciting way.
This book ticked all the right boxes that a great fiction/paranormal novel should tick. It has got your Paranormal effects and characters, your action and mystery, tension between the characters. Laughter and emotion, and last but not lease; a great twist to end on!!
The one thing I want to point out the most though is how superb the author, Joanne Kershaw has written her Characters. Sometimes having a group of in-depth characters that side the main character, can really confuse a reader, also a lot of Authors just don’t know how to write them in and it can get messy. But Joanne has gone above and beyond expectations. The feelings I felt for the characters were all there, I felt I was part of their lives.
This is an awesome novel, and a must read for all people. I am very much looking forward to reading the sequel.

I really liked this book it may have even brought me back into the YA world.
Elora has just started her proper vanguard training she makes some new friends learns some pretty nifty skills and uncovers some interesting facts about her family that her mother has kept hidden her whole life.
Elora discovers that there is a terrible plan at foot and she and her new friends have to join together using their new skills to save the day.
Pretty interesting story line with the usual twist insider (which we can all guess who that is) but it still kept me interested through out the book. The characters are great and I found it really easy to read. A good book to add to the list for all the Supernatural YA lovers out there.

If you like paranormal romance, you’ll love the unique world of Vanguard Legacy: Foretold. If you're fans of The Hunger Games and Harry Potter (I am!), I’m betting you’ll love this. It has vampires, magic wielders and dark forces bent on destruction...oh and romance thrown in the mix. A young teenage girl, a warrior-in-training, must balance new friendships, romance and tumultuous family relationships with her duty to protect humanity. The main character is very real, very relatable. There’s lots of action and shocking twists, and I had a hard time putting it down. You won’t want to miss this book, and this series! I can’t wait for the 2nd book to find out what happens next!

This is the first book of the Vanguard Series and I am definitely going to read the whole series. It is the story of Elora Walker's life being explained to her daughter. This is the first story I have read of a mother explaining her life and the burden her families prophecy. Elora a human divergent and her friends which include a vampire and a magicae battle to save the race from dark seekers. This book is centred on her childhood and being a recruit in the Vanguard finding out the truth and trying to live up to her mother's expectations.

This YA fantasy fiction by UK author Joanne Kershaw has much to get your teeth into, and I was swept away but it’s similarity to some other genre series might grate for the die hard fans of those tattooed teens.It is unfortunate that every time the word Divergent was used, comparisons with the similar storyline of genetically modified teens being catergorised by skillset swims into the mind’s eye.
That being said, there are enough fresh ideas here to create a feasible setting for this battle between the forces of Light versus Dark. There is a spunky heroine, the loyal and devoted best friend and the inevitable expansion of the friendship group that creates tension and jealousy as they adjust to new feelings, new powers and new dynamics.
This is a tale of fighters, biters and spirit guides with enough teen angst and fledgling love, unrequited crushes and parental overbearance to keep YA readers engaged.
The framing of the story in the period where all recruits to to the Vanguard come into their full powers helps to provide some delineation between the various “types” in this story, we learn their various strengths and weaknesses at a time when they themselves are exploring their limitations.
A very promising start.

The story is about Elora, her best friend, Aaron and their training to be Vanguards - proficient hunters of the Dark Seekers.
I liked the character of Elora - I found her, both an enchanting and a believable character. I was totally enthralled by her training and the world in which she grew up.
I found, towards the end of the book, that I tended to drift past some description of the conversations between Elora and her friends at her training school.
This is a fantastic Young Adult book for those who love futuristic or vampire-based stories.
I would compare this book to Twilight and enjoyed how the characters developed.

Elora's story was definitely interesting. It starts with a little background and then she heads off to school. I liked Elora's character, but didn't really understand her mother's character. the other characters came to life much better.
While I enjoyed this book enough to want to continue the story, it did take a bit of reading to get into it. I'm glad that I did. I'd recommend this book because I really enjoyed the next one in this series. For the backstory alone, it's worth a read.

FANTASTIC READ! I couldnt put it down once i started. I found the tweaks to more traditional ideas on mythical races such as vampires a real breath of fresh air. The twists and turns throughout the book kept me page turning. It was an exciting rea and i thoroughly enjoyed it. I was given this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review. I would recommend this to my friends and family.

Elora Walker is a character you bond with immediately. As a reader it is easy to connect with this teenager who does her best to live up to her mother’s expectation and at the same time live a little. Aaron is a sweet guy and the kind of friend that everyone should have in their lives. Tessa and Matthew fall secondary to Elora, and thus heir background is given in a gist to us. I wish I could get to know these two characters a bit better as it is clear that they are always going to be an important influence on Elora. The build up of the plot was paced just right. The author gives us hints from the very beginning that there are some secrets that need to be faced and she unravels them at her own pace. I was able to guess most of it as the story progressed. The author narrates the story with an air of authority and familiarity. Being a first person narration we got to know our protagonist real well. However I do wish that there was a bit more action in the end.

She struggles to fit in with her peers as she finds it difficult to let her guard down. Her only friend is her best friend Aaron and he tries to keep her included with his wide circle of friends. In other ways she lives a life so far away from our world.
You see Elora has a destiny, one she was born into and it means her choices are limited. Elora is a Vanguard and her whole life has been a preparation to keep Ignaris safe from the Dark Seekers. We join Elora's story as she begins her journey to the school where her final training will begin. We are taken through Elora's story and put the pieces of an ages old puzzle which will affect her future together with her.
I could not put this book down and after a few readings I still find something I missed the last time round. I can't wait until the next installment!

Kershaw is a talented writer who has created a storyline that is both imaginative and sustaining. Her best writing happens when she is world building. Elora's world is filled with a rich history of Vanguard laws and traditions and Kershaw is adept at revealing background and weaving it with Elora's destiny in a way that is interesting as it is telling.
Full of action and adventure against a backdrop of mystery and prophecy with a touch of romance that is amplified in Reflected, I thoroughly enjoyed Joanne Kershaw's Foretold.

November 15, 2013As editor-in-chief at Xchyler Publishing, I am refraining from ranking this book, but I think it is well-suited for the genre and teens and young adults will find it engaging, insightful, and entertaining. Written in a smart, relate-able style that readers of all ages will enjoy.

I read the first version of this book and enjoyed it then but wow! The revised version is even better. The story flowed at a fast pace which never dropped, leading to the cliffhanger of a conclusion. A really good, enjoyable YA read.
