I protect from the shadows, but for her I’ll step into the light

Annie

As a human diplomat on the Orion Space Station, can I balance a new promotion, two demanding older kids and post-divorce life? It’s a challenge even I’m struggling to conquer.

My alluring protector Crux keeps a professional distance, yet I can't ignore his piercing gaze and brushing touch. When a covert attack throws me into the arms of my sexy but stoic alien bodyguard, I realize there might be more to life than obligations.

Crux

Haunted by my past failure, I’ve vowed never to let emotion compromise my duty again. As a veteran Avenia Order Knight, I’m assigned to protect the human delegation. There’s one diplomat who stands out. Annie’s beauty and vulnerability awaken feelings I thought I’d buried forever.

As conflict brews, an attack forces us together. The walls I’ve built around my heart begin to crumble. I’m destined to protect, but for Annie, I’ll fight. Even if it means I must confront my fears and question my loyalties.

This novella is part of the My Monster, My Protector series. This steamy sci-fi romance features a tormented alien knight, his resilient human diplomat, and a steamy HEA

Annie (h), a dedicated diplomat, navigates the complex political landscape of Orion Space Station, burdened with heavy responsibilities and personal struggles. Recently divorced, she navigates delicate negotiations while striving to maintain peace among fractious alliances. Her steadfast bodyguard, Crux (H), an Avenian Order Knight, harbors his own haunted past and is determined to protect her at all costs. When an assassination attempt reveals a broader conspiracy, Annie and Crux have to safeguard their mission and their lives. As they retreat to Crux’s home planet of Avenia for safety, their professional boundaries blur as things heat up between the two, leading to a connection that challenges their commitments and priorities. But Annie is called back to her diplomatic duties and together they have to navigate their mission and the newborn connection they’ve built. Hot and steamy forbidden, alien-human, midlife romance with plenty of action, danger, and intrigue.

An entertaining read with an alien bodyguard who has a way with words (*swoon) and a FMC who has a demanding job and grown-up children. That gave a refreshing dynamic to the characters' relations (compared to what I've read lately). I got this book for SYKD and didn't know what to expect as the author was new to me; now I know I'll be reading more by Lara Roth!

Gleeful Goblin Review: I'm always thrilled to see FMC's in sci-fi and paranormal romances who are in their 30's and upwards. I feel like it's great to see stories told where someone has had an entire life, career, even families before finding their happily ever after. Love doesn't only happen in your 20's and can happen more than once in real life so I adore seeing that reality reflected in my fiction.

In this particular story, both main characters have lived pretty dynamic and complex lives before having the universe and their jobs throw these two at each other. Annie has a lot of pressure on her from being a diplomat that's fighting for top worry spot with her also being a mother who is often not able to be in multiple places at once and her kids are quick to remind her. Crux meanwhile is a stoic, kinda broody but dedicated warrior who has lost someone he was supposed to protect and feels the weight of that every single day. "I approach Ambassador Agnew’s quarters with a sense of anticipation, my heart beating faster as the door slides open with a deep hiss. I’m greeted by the sight of Annie seated at her desk. She looks up at me, her blue eyes meeting mine, and she smiles, her beautiful face lighting up the room. “Crux, please, come in,” she says, gesturing for me to enter as she stands and begins gathering her datapad and notes. As she moves about the room, I can’t help but admire her form. She is tall for a human female, and her curves are accentuated by the elegant suit she is wearing. Her brown-silver hair falls in waves around her shoulders, and her eyes are bright and intelligent but carry a hint of tiredness. I silently chastise myself for the inappropriate thoughts. I must not get distracted. Never again. Suddenly, the door opens, and a young woman bursts in as my hand flicks to my sword in a flash. “Mom, I need to talk to you,” she says urgently. I relax as Annie sighs, her shoulders slumping. “Alice, I’m in the middle of something important. Can it wait?” As I step outside to give them privacy, I overhear their conversation, feeling like an intruder in a family matter. Alice is talking rapidly, her voice rising with each word. Annie is trying to calm her down, her tone soothing and patient. I feel a twinge of sympathy for Annie. She’s trying so hard to be everything to everyone, to balance her duties as a mother and a diplomat. When she emerges from her quarters, her face is drawn and tired, but her eyes hold a mixture of gratitude and apology. As we walk to the council chambers, Annie turns to me. “I’m sorry about that, Crux,” she says softly. “Alice has been struggling with her scholarship application, and she’s feeling the pressure.” I nod, my expression neutral despite the twinge of sympathy I feel. But I dare not say anything, as I’m acutely aware of her proximity. The ambassador continues speaking rapidly about the upcoming negotiation. As we walk, her words flow smoothly. She’s passionate about her work, and I find myself enraptured by her. “And so, I really need to ensure that the Folmodians are satisfied with our deal, otherwise the whole Orion Quadrant could be threatened.” As the ambassador speaks, my eyes continue looking for threats. But the truth is, her voice, the way she moves, and her scent are making it impossible for me to focus on my duty. My training is telling me that my interest in her is a distraction. If I was a better knight I would ask for reassignment. Focus, Crux! My eyes sweep over the oncoming crowd, alert for any sign of trouble. But after a cursory glance, my attention wanders back to the ambassador, and I try to push the scent of her skin, the sound of her soft voice, and the lushness of her curves from my mind. I’ve always been able to separate my professional and personal lives, but with Annie, it’s proving difficult."

Watching these two figure out how they fit in each other's lives and what they each mean to the other was so utterly charming. The story is engaging and I burnt through the book super quickly because of it. 5/5 Stars.

They picked the wrong diplomat when they involved her children in the fight against her!

Annie is a human diplomat on the Orion Space Station. She's been trying to get a treaty signed between the Folmodians and the Orion Alliance. They are difficult to deal with and have demanded an immediate meeting with her. On the way to the counsel chambers after the meeting, she's attacked by a Huxarian, a sworn enemy of the Folmodians.

Crux is her Avenian Order Knight bodyguard. They are rarely seen anywhere other than on their planet, Avenia, which is also the headquarters of their order. To have one as a bodyguard signals how important and critical her work is.

After the attack, Crux is ordered to stay on Orion to aid with the investigation, while Annie is moved off station to an Avenian Order safe house. She refuses to go without Crux. His commander reluctantly agrees with her demand. Upon arrival at the citadel, the fortress monastery of the Avenian Order, they are greeted by Commander Ven’ari, Security Chaplain for the Order.

The last time Crux had been a bodyguard for a human, a young male diplomat who had shown great possibilities had been killed right in front of him. Crux blamed himself for being complacent. He had blindly followed orders rather than relying on his gut feelings. Now he's afraid too many people will know where she's located, and it will be too difficult to protect her there. He proposes taking her elsewhere, and she agrees.

Commander Ven’ari is livid when he learns they've left. The Commander believes in blind devotion to following orders.

When the Huxarians capture her twenty-year-old twins, Alice and Max, they have no idea what wrath they've brought down upon themselves. Annie will do anything to protect her children. And Crux will do anything to help the woman he loves and her children. The Commander still only sees one of his knights refusing to follow orders. Will this finally be Commander Ven’ari's much-needed wake-up call? And how will Alice and Max react to knowing Annie and Crux are a couple here to stay?

FMC is an interstellar diplomat in her 40’s, has two adult children, and is divorced.
MMC is a purple alien bodyguard with a past to make up for.

This is the first book I’ve read where stretch marks are mentioned neutrally (everything else has been ‘oh no! I have stretch marks 😭😭😭😭’). Very excited about that. The FMC reads more like a 20-something to me, but I like her. She seems to have a decent handle on things.

Somewhat insta-love/attraction but it’s 126 pages, and I am absolutely down for that. It is implied they’ve known each other for a couple months before the book starts though. I was a little confused about some of the organization names but this is my first time reading a book in this series (and by this author) and I’m interested in reading more. I just wish it was longer!

If you’re looking for detailed politics this is not the book for you (and I really love intergalactic politics).
If you’re looking for heated politics that make bodyguard romances possible this IS the book for you.

A good choice if you’re just getting into alien romance and are intimidated by odd alien 🍆.

*ARC read, 2.25/5 spice.

"You bring light back into my battered soul, and I will not repent for that."

The way these two love each other in this book is freaking divine. They will go to great depths to protect one another, no matter the cost and in that final battle scene, Crux would have done just about anything to make sure Annie and her children made it out of there alive.

"I've already fallen, I need no more convincing." 🥰

The way they express their love is absolutely beautiful. I'm so glad they got their happy ending because they deserved it.

"You are my eternal destiny, Annie." 😍

I also died of laughter when they were caught by her children, I could feel the embarrassment through the page 🤣🤣

Plus, the spicy scenes between these two are *chef's kiss*, so delicious 🥵😉

You can also read a bonus epilogue of these two if you sign up to Miss Roth's newsletter, I just finished that also and wow. So spicy and so good 🥵😍

"You are my soul's radiant awakening, Annie - my ever-lasting light and forever love."

I did receive this as an ARC, just a bit behind on some of them 😅
This is an ARC review and is my honest opinion.

Great story that's full of depth, lots of action, steamy romantic encounters, and wonderful characters to root for grabbed me from beginning to the end. This story about Ambassador Annie Agnew and Crux her bodyguard from the Avenia Order Knight was an enjoyable story. Annie feels torn about her duties of being a mother and her duty to represent her people in the Orion Alliance since a rebellious human fraction against aliens has arisen. She is determined to seal an agreement with the Alliance. Crux is determined to protect Annie at all costs since his last job he failed which haunts him, so he told himself to not get involved with his client, but fate brings them together when an attack occurs, and they go to an Avenia safe haven. Can Crux keep Annie safe? Loved our characters and that Annie was a mid-life woman and loved reading the storyline in this copy I'd received and volunteer to review.

Protected by the Alien Knight is an exciting Sci-Fi Romance featuring MMC Avenian Knight Crux who is guard to Human Ambassador Annie Agnew at the moment involved in sensitive negotiations while facing threats to her life.
After one such attempt she is removed to an Avenia safe haven where Crux decides until the threats to her have been neutralized he is taking her to another more secret location.
Their relationship is already tenuous because of the building attraction igniting between them which emerges in full force once alone together.
I enjoyed their nicely written story that had a mature female lead with older children, action, adventure, spice, intrigue, personal vulnerabilities, subterfuge, and well crafted characters who flowed through a very engaging read.

Lara strikes again with this spicy novella!

Annie and Crux had that instant attraction/lust for each other but tried to ignore it for the sake of their respective roles. But when Annie faces danger and they have to hide together, it becomes impossible to deny it any longer.

Protected by the Alien Knight is a short and spicy novella, part of the My Monster, My Protector series. It's steamy, cute, swoony, and funny.
I love that Annie is an older-than-average FMC, she has sacrificed a lot for her 20-year-old children and stressful career and is ready to make herself her priority by indulging in a HEA with her alien knight.

Thank you Lara for providing me with an early copy of this book to review!

This is another great read for this fun multi-author series. Annie is a dedicated diplomat that has made a lot of sacrifices for her job and Crux is an elite body guard with a troubled past. When things go sideways for them, and uncertain loyalties around them, these two head off to his homeworld for safety. This forced proximity lets the chemistry that they've both been ignoring bubble up to the surface. With deadly threats surrounding them, and her grown children caught in the crossfire, they both have to work together to bring about a happy ending for all. I loved the moments that her kids caught the two of them in rather compromising situations, bringing that humour element to the front, too. So fun!

“You bring light back into my battered soul, and I will not repent for that.”

Crux has sworn to protect Annie, he needs to remain focused on her safety, not how much this intelligent diplomat intrigues him.

Annie trusts Crux with her life, and has the nagging feeling she would trust him with her heart if he gave any indication he was interested.

This done in one story is primarily about trusting our instincts and staying true to what we believe in, but there is a really great subplot about ambition, and the hazards of losing our way. One of the characters has a great turning point when he is brought face to face with the consequences of a decision he made based on ambition as opposed to ethics and the job, and it was a powerful and moving scene.

I found Protected by the Alien Knight to be a great story, that’s full of depth, lots of action, steamy romantic encounters and wonderful characters to root for. This book grabbed from the beginning of the story to the very end. When I read the blurb for this book I just knew that I needed to read the entire book to see if it was just as good as the blurb. To say the least it did NOT disappoint. I throughly enjoyed the book. I’m looking forward to reading more books written by this author. I would most definitely recommend this book to other readers.

A highly entertaining story of Crux the bodyguard and Annie the Ambassador. This is a well-written page-turner. Annie is divorced and has two immature twenty something children. Crux is assigned to guard her but they fall for each other when he takes her to his home planet for safety. The story has love, fighting, ex-husband turning up and bouts of humour when her children keep finding them getting over friendly. Highly reccommended reading.

I liked the story "Protected by the Alien Knight' by Lara Roth very much. It was not just the building romance between a lady ambassador who is overseeing a peace treaty and the Avenian Knight who protects and guards her, but it is also a fast-moving tale of the danger she and her family face and the lengths her guarding knight will go to in order to protect his love. Their relationship goes from mutual respect, to admiration, and finally love.

Trust the warrior's instinct.
Crux is a trained knight hired to protect the Ambassador, Annie. While attempting to not become distracted by the delectable woman, every one of his instincts is telling him that she isn't safe. If separating her from known locations will provide her safety, who is he to bemoan the temptation she provides? Crux is a very capable protector, and Annie is a brilliant negotiator and strategist. They are perfect together.

Crux was assigned to protect the ambassador. He swore it wouldn’t be a repeat of his last mistake. Annie was devoted to her job doing all she could to achieve success. It was more than challenging and it didn’t help there were those who didn’t want her to succeed. There’s danger and of course a love that will definitely catch your attention and keep you reading to find how it turns out.

A Knight in Shining Lilac
Annie is an important diplomat, while Crux is her bodyguard. There’s a spark there, but they can’t act on it … until Annie’s life is in real danger. I enjoyed this peak into this new-to-me galaxy, and I was most amused by the juxtaposition between the Crux’s ultra flowery language mixed with his dirty talk - phew! A fun read.
