June 1947 and the United Nations Special Committee On Palestine is working on proposals for the planned Partition. The British are excluded but Bill Wolfe is sent undercover as an assistant with the aim of ensuring a successful outcome.
Tensions are high amid political manoeuvring, but despite Wolfe's spying naivety the job seems straightforward. Until another assistant receives a coded one of the delegates will be murdered.
Murray Bailey was always interested in writing and, at an early age, had articles published in newspapers, including the Times. Despite studying Physics and Mathematics and pursuing a very different career, he also edited a magazine for a year as well as a batch of technical books.
After 10 years of scribbling, in 2016 his first published novel was I Dare You. He went on to demonstrate his passion for ancient Egypt and puzzles in his novel Map of the Dead. However the Singapore series featuring the ex-military policeman Ash Carter was a labour of love and based on his first unpublished story that eventually became Singapore 52.
Born in Greater Manchester, England, he gradually moved south to reach the beautiful Dorset coast where he lives with his wife and family. Having young children and an all-consuming passion such as writing doesn’t leave much free time, but when he does take a break, he enjoys running, cycling, kayaking and building sandcastles with his children.
In the summer of 1947, Military Policeman Bill Wolfe is sent undercover to monitor the proceedings of the UN committee charged with creating a peaceful partition of Palestine following the British rule in the region.
A simple job becomes life threatening when one of the delegates receives a potential death threat.
At once, Wolfe's shadows is both entertaining and informative. The research by the author into the tensions in the region following the end of the second world war is brilliant. Considering the current situation in Israel, this is a timely reminder of why the situation exists in the first place.
Wolfe is a maverick investigator for whom the end justifies the means and this pitches him into various perilous situations which keep the reader on the edge of their seat.
Another excellent story from the Ash Carter Near East series that broadens the scope of the series and adds interesting additional world building as well as great historical knowledge of the time period involved.
