Fresh out of medical school and coping with the loss of their mother, life is chaotic enough for Lils Howells. But when a little boy introduces himself as the powerful wizard Merlin, and tells Lils they’re in fact the reincarnation of King Arthur, life for Lils and their group of friends is destined to change forever.
Lils’ dreams offer glimpses of King Arthur’s life in reverse, gradually convincing them of their true identity. As they grapple with the balance between their ordinary life and their newfound responsibilities, they must also lead the charge against the threat by the powerful enchantress Morgana to protect their world from impending doom.
Lake Avalon’s Lils Howells vs. the Dragon of Snowdown weaves an enchanting narrative featuring a non-binary main character, that explores the duality of existence, friendship and the timeless echoes of Arthurian myth in the modern age.
This book is nothing short of amazing, I really don't have the words for it, so I can't give it the justice it deserves, but it has reignitied something in me so beautiful that I wonder how I'm going to go on reading anything else. For a start, the characters are just amazing. Everyone is written in a way that is not only inclusive and diverse, but memorable, and realistic. It's easy to imagine real people behind the words, and to feel a real connection with them. Martin in particular really spoke to me, even as a character who spends every moment he has being cold, he's portrayed in this way that still allows for the reader to see that he doesn't really wish anything bad upon Lils, and he's looking out for them in his own dysfunctional brother way. The plot itself and how it's set out is something really new to me. It's done so creatively, and having Lils' and Arthur's lives side by side makes the weight of the entire situation feel so much heavier, so much more significant. It just strikes this perfect balance and comes together amazingly. My only complaint about this book would be that I can never experience it for the first time ever again. I should have appreciated it more in the moment!
The BEST book I have read in a long time. I.could.not.put.it.down!!!!! It's full of Inclusion, representation for multiple disabilities and the LGBTQIA+ community. If you are interested in King Arthur and the Knights of the round table, this book is for you. If you are searching for books with representation for the above communities, this book is for you! This is an amazing take on the legend of King Arthur! The re-imagined characters in a modern setting are fabulous and hilarious! It is magical!
