Philip Edward Thomas was an Anglo-Welsh writer of prose and poetry. He is commonly considered a war poet, although few of his poems deal directly with his war experiences. Already an accomplished writer, Thomas turned to poetry only in 1914. He enlisted in the army in 1915, and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras in 1917, soon after he arrived in France.

A quirky little history by the poet (d. France 1917) and published in 1910. Lovely watercolour illustrations by his near - contemporary artist E. W. Haslehust.

An interesting read, quite unconventional. Thomas does not fawn over royalty (nor is he disrespectful). He speaks up for the much maligned king George IV and the major work he did to the Castle. It is clearly written by a poet (particularly in his choice of quotations from other poet’s works. He is quite dismissive of the Great Park and felt that it was in need of work/tidying up. How has it changed since c1910? Must look into that!
