Sarah, Faye, and Madison have all been fired by the same boss!
And now, there’s a thousand dollars on the table if… I, who have never ever been fired before, can escape being fired by this obnoxious, arrogant, perfectionist monster of a CEO.
I’m not into pranks or childish bets, but after a few Cosmopolitans that thousand dollar cash pile just sitting there on the table, uncared for and unclaimed, amongst the empty cocktail glasses, starts winking at me.
My brain starts seriously asking, ‘Why not? You could do with the money.’
Suddenly my mouth opens and I’m saying, “Fine, I’ll do it.”
I only realize what a grave mistake I’ve made when I arrive for work.
They hadn’t exaggerated.
He is as handsome as an avenging Greek God, but he is just HORRIBLE. Totally, completely, and absolutely horrible. The man is grumpy, rude, and impossible to please.
Imagine a boss who takes exception to your perfume, or acts like a dick about the way you dress. Now times that by ten.
I was no longer looking at winning a thousand dollars, but losing said amount.
Then one crazy night happens and everything changes between us.
Just like that all bets are off.
I don’t care about the thousand dollars anymore. I just never want to get fired.
And then… I learn the real reason why Sarah, Faye, and Madison got fired. A Full Length Standalone Romance.
Possible spoilers ahead- 2 lol stars were awarded for this one
The plot of this book is exactly why some frown on workplace romances/hookups. He went through so many experienced PAs only to keep the one person without experience because she was beautiful. Every time it mentioned how beautiful she was, or somebody made a comment on her beauty, I couldn't roll my eyes any harder.
The couple was very dull together. They had no deep discussions or any real heart-to-heart moments. I'm pretty sure all the MMC thought was that Hannah was hot and they had amazing sex together. I dig most spicy scenes but these were kind of blah to me. Maybe it was just because I didn't get any chemistry with these two. When they are first together, he mentions he doesn't have a condom. She said she's on the pill and that she will take the morning-after pill so it's okay if they do it. I just KNEW there was going to be a surprise pregnancy. This guy is supposed to be some brilliant lawyer.
The villain of this story was easy to see from a mile away. I chuckle that the author made it all move to attempted murder. Like...whoa. I guess being a PA is dangerous. I find it hard to believe that the villain worked for him for a few days, tried to come on to him and was turned down, and then she was moved to another partner BUT not fired.........her whole motive was that she loved him. WHAT? If you think about it, she almost killed him with the peanut allergy prank. It would have made more sense (plot-wise) to say the villain hated him so much that she wanted to kill him.
Whenever I find myself trying to rewrite a whole book's plot (in my head) to make more sense, I know the book just didn't do it for me.
Where do I start? DNF - got to chapter 35 when I decided that I wasn't going to waste any more time on this story.
As a paralegal and having done legal secretary work as well, I was unable to see anything tangible in this story to make me want to continue reading it. If an author is going to write about something they need to do some basic research so they have an understanding of how things work in real time, especially when it boils down to an office affair. Even fiction has to be somewhat believable.
Hannah decides to leave one train wreck of a boss with a marketing firm to work for a partner in a legal office that has gone through 4 secretaries in 2 months because of a childish bet amongst her four friends/colleagues who lost their jobs in this office while working for Guy.
1. Hannah has no experience as a legal secretary, but gets hired because she is "so beautiful". The word "legal" defines that this is a specialized category that requires specialized knowledge to do the job accurately.
2. She gets hired because she is "so beautiful" and he is attracted to her, which is an HR nightmare, because all he really wants to do is get in her pants.
3. She desperately needs a job because of her mother in Connecticut and yet ends up sleeping with her boss...ugh.
4. Guy almost dies because he ingests peanuts which he is highly allergic to when having dinner with Asian clients where Hannah planned the meal. He failed to tell her of his allergy when planning this Asian meal....really? Drum role.....even after this happens Hannah can't put two and two together or remembers that his paralegal, Sandra told her he had no allergies and could eat anything.
and Finally
5. Sandra is person in the office getting his secretaries fired by setting them up. No one including Hannah is able to put this together by chapter 35 including Guy. I am assuming she wants good ole Guy all to herself.
Guy and Hannah's characters were very topical and predictable. She has allot of inner dialogue where one would think that she is a strong character when she isn't.. Guy is just a dick in the beginning of the book and only softens when he is attraction to Hannah because she is "so beautiful" becomes an obsession. The author didn't take the time to really dig deep into each character to give the reader a reason to connect with them. The story up to chapter 35 was just based on lust and poor decision making by both characters.
The author's over use of "however" and "she is so beautiful" as well as some other phrases throughout the portion of the book I read was repetitive and boring.
Hannah, a professional PA, is working for a boss who low-key exploits her looks with his clients and turns a blind eye when they're sexually suggestive to her and/or inappropriately touchy-feely in his presence. She's been tolerating it because she needs the salary for her family. But she hates it.
Guy, a young named partner at his law firm, has been going through PA's like wet tissues. Three of Hannah's friends have all been fired by him because of the mistakes they made. While he's dining at a restaurant with his former teacher and HR head. Gloria, he looks out the window and sees Hannah and observes her with a client and her boss anout to enter the restaurant. It's pretty clear from her.body language she 's unhappy with the attention. He literally cannot look away from her. The author used the word gorgeous to describe her four times in the same paragraph (granted it's a page long but still).
Hannah, just emerging from the restroom from the bathroom to get a break from this obnoxious client, runs into Guy who lets her know he saw what happened and offers his professional help. She refuses because she needs the job and doesn't want to muddy the waters. She doesn't even keep the card he gives her. She later meets up with her three friends and since she's never been fired, they bet her that she could work for their former boss and not be fired. At the restaurant, Gloria clocked his interest in Hannah. Desperate to get another PA, she contacts Hannah about the opening which pays extremely well. Hannah agrees to come into the office the next morning, Only then does she realize that her new boss is the man from the restaurant who offered his help the previous evening.
Guy is also surprised, and shocked that he would be working with this woman to whom he is extremely attracted. He doesn't want her there because he doesn't want to deal with his attraction. Just looking at her arouses him. So he proceeds to be extremely dickish and churlish to her, in an effort to get her to quit. Hannah is really frazzled, but she handles it pretty well even though she's been like thrown in the deep end of the pool. In short order she does resign, but changes her mind and asks for another chance. It was really nice the way she finally stood up for herself and asked for what she needed.
Eventually, Guy stops blaming her and admits that he is very attracted to her and wanted her to quit. And he becomes more supportive to the point of agreeing to have her mentored and be assisted..
Unbeknownst to Hannah, there's a person at work who's been very friendly and helpful who is actually sabotaging her. Hannah comes to suspect this when information this person gave her about Guy's allergies actually endangers his health..
Both these characters gave me literary whiplash in that they kept changing their feelings from cold to hot to cold and back to hot. And Guy’s initial coldness, unkindness, and rudeness to Hannah, contrasted to his deep sexual need, just didn't really sit well with me. Requiring Hannah to say what she wanted without his saying what he wanted or revealing his feelings, not so great.

Get comfortable because you start you won’t put it down so make sure you have your favorite snake and a tall glass of wine …. wait what am I saying you are going to need the whole bottle 😊. Hannah is sweet when needed with a whole lot of spice so her friends make a bet with her about her new boss considering he has fired the last three secretaries within a few months so they bet if she last as his assistant they will give her $1000 she needs the money helping her mom and even though it goes against everything needing the overrides her thinking rationally. Although, she learns the first day her friends weren’t exaggerating he was in fact all that they claimed leaving her asking herself why she let them talk her into accepting the job, but she also learns she is up for the challenge or better put proving him wrong earning her prize. Guy sexy as all get out attorney in New York not just any attorney but the best, he is a perfectionist, a workaholic who expects everyone around him to have the same workaholic ethic, known for his grump, fires every assistant that works with him within a month reputation proceeding him and while out he notices a beautiful women being harassed he steps in stopping it before it gets out of hand attracted to her (which he isn’t ready to admit) offers her a job hiring her on the spot. Day one they clash but she makes the decision to give as good as she gets which is something he isn’t use to every happing by anyone and it makes him take a second look at the spicy women he hired but will she withstand the torture he puts her through at work, will she be honest with herself about his feelings, will he be honest about his feelings or will he do what he normally does follow the rules, and where are they headed especially after he learns of the bet will it end with happiness?
This is my first book by this author so I don’t know if the prose is typical of her writing style. It felt stilted to me, and awkward to read. In my head, when reading the dialog, it was a little too formal.
Hannah is a mediocre secretary with no legal experience but she’s hired to be a billionaire lawyer’s executive assistant. Makes one wonder what fiction is in her resume to get hired so quickly. Naturally she’s a terrible legal assistant because she has no legal experience whatsoever. Guy (billionaire lawyer) thinks she’s too pretty to work for him, that she’s a distraction, that she doesn’t know what she’s doing (true) and he should fire her like he’s fired multiple assistants before her. But he doesn’t because … she’s too pretty to be fired. He likes lusting after her so no matter how much she screws up at work, he takes her everywhere so he can be constantly distracted which endlessly annoys him but I’m guessing guys really think like this. Yup, this is basically the cliche of an incompetent woman who is sitting in a high paying position because of her looks.
So Hannah seduces Guy when she realizes she’s about to be fired and of course, he’s ok with that. Then he decides to keep her around so he can continue to sleep with her. And maybe teach her how to be better at her job so he could get some actual work done. There’s a side story of friends who made a bet that she couldn’t keep the job, a competitor who is trying to sabotage Hannah’s employment and a surprise pregnancy. Then there’s an HEA. I’m curious if all this author’s books are written like this so I might try one more. I don’t recommend this one tho, unless this is the trope you’re into.
Disclaimer: DON'T READ THIS BOOK! (TLDR; the book just sucks plot-wise, writing is so bad, written like a 12 yr old's fanfic, bimbo FMC, boring MMC, horrible pacing).
This feels like it was written by a man, and I mean this in the most offensive way I can.
The FMC, Hannah, is a complete tool. She's incompetent and has no substance. Her character is so boring! She has no semblance of personality, the only thing we really know about her is that she's a docile, beautiful (mentioned on every page) girl. The scene at the Asian fusion restaurant proves how stupid she is and she just suddenly starts to like the MMC because he thought she was pretty.
The MMC, Guy, has no substance either! He's just a douche who likes Hannah because of her looks. I mean she doesn't have much else, but still... try to find SOMETHING. Example from his POV: "She was watching me, and it made me realize just how scrawny she looked, apart from her boobs."
The writing is bad... like it's really something else. The style changes a lot so it does not feel cohesive and the Hannah talks like a snobby upperclass socialite... which she's not supposed to be. I understand the author wants to make her sound like a submissive plaything for the male gaze or whatever, but like, seriously? That's problematic, firstly. Secondly, no one really talks like that.
Another annoying thing? STOP USING FREAKING, JUST SWEAR.
DNF at 40%. Hannah was wholly incompetent and unlikable. She got annoying quickly. What made it worse, though, was that Guy never gave her the tools to succeed in the first place. Not that she would have anyhow. But like, you have a secretary and she has no access to a staff directory? IS THERE a staff directory? Because hunting down people to get their number doesn't sound like you run a tight ship there, bud. She asks multiple people about food allergies and none of them tell her your deathly allergic to peanuts? Bro, why isn't that in your file? Everyone in your company should know what so they don't accidentally kill you. I know random acquaintances' food allergies. Wouldn't this be a need to know immediately? This kept happening more and more, and I was like, "I can't do this any longer. These two are awful." Hannah should have stuck up for herself too. But alas, incompetent.
However, the book gets an extra star for the most accurate depiction of HR I have ever seen: HR rep and Guy watch a woman being sexually harassed. Guy steps in and gives woman his card. Woman declines and says she doesn't need it. HR sees woman applying for secretary job the next day: "Oh, she's perfect because we know she won't rat on her boss." Everyone else reading:
HR: *blinks* What? This is a perfectly acceptable HR response.
I really wanted to like this book, but the premise is pretty insulting. I have not said this review contains spoilers because everything I’m about to say occurs in the first 25% of the book, but please stop reading if you don’t want information on the early plot. The premise here is that this asshole has a history of firing his new secretaries within days of hiring them, by complete coincidence the FMC is friends with three of the fired secretaries, by complete coincidence they all get together for drinks the day that the last of the three was fired, they make a cockamamie bet that if the FMC takes the job she will also get fired (why would they think she was capable of getting the job?). By complete coincidence, she had come across the MMC earlier that same evening and he was kind of creepily obsessed with her, and by complete coincidence he comes across her while having dinner with his head of HR, who decides on the basis of this creepy preoccupation to give the FMC the job the next day even though she is SEVERELY UNDERQUALIFIED. But despite the fact that she does a shit job because she is not actually a legal secretary, they decide to fix this by giving her a staff of more qualified people to essentially teach her how to do her job. I’ve read a bunch of books in the “grumpy boss is an ass to his secretary” mini-genre, and I don’t think it’s made better by making the secretary super under-qualified. Did not finish.
This was an interesting story. Hannah, a top notch secretary, had never been fired from a job before. Guy, a lawyer and legal eagle extraordinaire, was notoriously grumpy and had fired three veteran legal secretaries within days of their hiring.
Hannah almost quit before her first day working for Guy was over and did quit a few days when Guy became sick because of his peanut allergy, an allergy she hadn't been informed about. Later on, she showed up at Guy's apartment with some peanut free chicken soup and they ended up engaging in some heavy foreplay before falling asleep in each other's arms.
Guy refused to let Hannah quit and they became lovers. As their relationship progressed, they began dating and Hannah soon learned why the previous secretaries got fired and who was responsible for it.
Despite Guy's best efforts, someone tampers with the brakes on the new car he gifted Hannah and she gets into a wreck. Guy rushes to the hospital and learns that while Hannah was injured during the wreck, she's going to be fine and so will the baby she's carrying.
The culprit behind all the troubles is found and arrested, leaving Guy and Hannah free to enjoy their HEA. A good read and well worth the time it takes to finish it.

Hannah is working as a PA, but her boss is putting her in inappropriate positions with clients. One time at a restaurant she goes to the bathroom to get away from a client. This is how she meets Guy when he approaches her and offers help to tape what is happening for a lawsuit if she wants. She refuses and finishes her work meal and goes home. Hannah puts in to work for Guy, but she has a bet with the other assistants that he fired. They want to see if his fires her like he did them because they are thinking of suing. However, things go different for her while working for him. Just as she's about to give in and quit Hannah decides to try and learns what she needs to do in order to be helpful in her position. Its not long before things heat up between them. Yet they don't realize that there is someone working in the company that is causing the problems. Will they find out who it is before something serious happens? Can Hannah and Guy be together?
This is a great story that will captivate you from beginning to end. This is a well written and very entertaining story. Its a book that any book lover would enjoy.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book for Bad Boy Update.
The premise of the book was so intriguing that I knew I had to read it. It definitely lived up to the promise. It was amusing that just as Hannah was involved in a bet about lasting as his assistant, Guy makes a deal to give his next assistant a three month trial. You’d think there might be some sort of collusion but it was mere coincidence. That’s where it starts. When Guy and Hannah first meet and those sparks start to erupt, at the end of that three month period, they were either going to light up like fireworks on Independence Day or burst into flames big enough to rival Guy Fawkes, no pun intended. The entire time they sizzle and spark with the sass, charm, humor, and frustration, but it’s marred by the trouble lurking in the background. Guy and Hannah were at very different ends of the personality spectrum so it was fun reading them try and change themselves because of outside factors and end up helping each other grow. I loved it.

I loved this book! I originally thought this book was going to be similar to another one I read a while back, but it didn’t come close. This is my first book from this author and hopefully not my last. This is about Guy and Hannah. There first interaction is based on his expertise but she declines to take him up on his offer. Later that evening the group of girls they hang out with make a bet that she wouldn’t be able to avoid being fired from their horrible boss. She thinks she might get fired only because she doesn’t have that much experience in their role but the salary is great and she can truly help her mother out with it and get into a decent apartment.
The problem she encounters is that he is the same man that tried to help her. There is also an attraction between the two and how can she work there and not mess up. The story is great - a lot is discovered between work and her friends. People’s lives are also at risk all due to jealousy.

The moment she stepped out the car, Guy was lost. He never thought she would become his secretary.
Hannah was the secretary at a Marketing Firm, her boss was kind of sleazy. He never stopped his clients from trying to hit on her. Guy was having dinner at the restaurant with his HR Manager when he noticed Hannah’s annoyance with the client. When he saw her later in the restaurant, he tried to offer her help but she turned him down. Guy was known for firing his secretaries and his HR Manager told him he couldn’t fire anyone else. The three secretaries the he fired made a bet that Hannah couldn’t work for him and not get fired. Guy and Hannah had a strong attraction and when he had an allergic reaction to a dish that had peanuts, Hannah went to his house to apologize but their attraction got the better of them. The three secretaries didn’t realize they were being sabotaged and when it came out that Guy and Hannah was dating, the disgruntled employee tried to kill her. Beautiful story with a HEA. I recommend reading this book.
Guy is a billionaire lawyer in NYC and he's been deemed ruthless by the secretary pool at the agency because he has fired everyone they sent to him in rapid succession. His behavior has been so bad that his own HR team has place Guy on a firing ban for the next hire.
Hannah has a reputation at the agency as the one who's never been fired from an assignment. She's driven to do well to establish her financial stability, but after learning exactly how much Guy pays for an executive assistant, she would be silly to walk away from that opportunity. Despite her fellow assistants betting against her success, will Hannah be able to continue her streak and stay employed by the monster of all bosses?
The Bet is a grumpy boss romance with hot steamy action and even some mystery & suspense. The POV shift between the characters only build on the relationship, making it a very enjoyable read.

This book just wasn’t for me. I started it but didn’t get far, thus the lack of stars. I didn’t think it fair. As far as I got, the hero(?) is a complete and total asshole who treats his secretaries (yes, that’s what we’re called in the book. Annoyed me every time I saw that word) horribly and is known for firing them in record time. The heroine works for an agency that sends “secretaries” to jobs and gets together with some of the fired ones by the asshole. They make a bet that is she gets hired she won’t last either. She takes the bet thinking he can’t be that bad. He’s worse. From the very first he treats her like dirt, belittles her and makes her feel bad. The reason? He wants to bang her. What a prince. To me I couldn’t see him coming back from that so that was it for this book. Maybe he does get completely redeemed and turns out to be wonderful. I will never know and I’m OK with that.
The Bet is a real page turner that pulls you in from the start!! Hannah is a strong Fiery, sassy woman who gets pulled into a bet with her friends that she won’t be able to keep a job as a secretary for a Grumphole attorney who fired them all within a month! She normally wouldn’t entertain the idea but she needs the money to take care of her mother so she figures hey it’s an easy grand! But she then Meets Guy who is the Best attorney and has impossible standards , the sparks fly instantly but they both have something to prove will she give as good as she gets and will the sparks turn into an inferno? All bets are off now… this is a Must Read!! You won’t be able to put it down Iona Rose does a phenomenal job with this book!! I am a dedicated fan now ❤️.

Honestly, hands down the worst book I have ever read, I can’t even finish it because I might lose my desire to ever read again. The writing is so basic, words don’t flow. The main female character is supposedly 27, but she comes across as very young and painfully meek. She’s also an experienced assistant, but she can’t even muster up the courage to ask her boss if he has an allergy. That’s quite a biggie! And you would think for something literally life threatening, he would tell her too. She has absolutely no forward thinking, one of the most basic skills needed to be an assistant. Clearly the author doesn’t know what’s involved in being an assistant. The scene where she propositions him for sec was the most cringe scene I have ever read. I haven’t finished it but I already know that other PA is the villain. Yawn! I might throw my Kindle against the wall if I carry on…

Grumpy, demanding boss meets his match. I really enjoyed this story of likeable secretary, Hannah and her struggle to please her super demanding boss, Guy in order to win a bet with his three previous secretaries! Guy is an interesting and complex character who actually falls first, but fights his attraction to his new assistant – trying to force her into resigning with his over the top perfectionist ways and – on occasions – utter rudeness. The background plot of the twists and turns of Guy’s legal practice adds interest to the story; in addition, there is the mystery as to who sabotaged his previous employees’ careers. A great, steamy romantic read with a great HEA. Another winner from Iona Rose.
Hannah has to be one of most patient people I’ve ever read: her bosses are rude, over reaching, and belittling. Guy takes the cake though because he’s even worse! There’s office politics, hidden agendas, and her new boss is extremely attractive. He’s dismissive, but the lust between them is visceral. Iona Rose creates compelling characters, exquisitely dirty scenes, and dialogue that’s provocative. Hannah and Guy seem like total opposites, but their drive to excel is similar and that makes for an interesting story. She brings out his best and he shows his appreciation in very spicy interludes. A very entertaining read with a great ending!.

An over the top billionaire grump whose attraction to his new secretary is fueling that fire is the MMC of The Bet, a Contemporary Romance that was a nice read, though Guy Templeton was really an unlikable person if you would have asked the secretaries who had preceded newly hired MFC Hannah, and since they were her friends who had together made a bet on how long she could last working for him the game was on. There was definitely a buzz of attraction between the two and a mystery behind how the other secretaries could have messed up so badly they were fired. I enjoyed the story and how it all played out, especially when grumpy Guy fell hard!.

What an incredible story line written by Iona Rose. The Author again had me on the edge of my seat. I think at a point I was holding my breath. It's the story of Hannah and Guy. When Guy meets Hannah he is witnesses the inappropriate advances and offers to help . When her work friends see her they offer her a bet to not get fired by the challenging boss who has already fired the last three secretaries. I was excited to see that she was able to change him . I was rooting for them. When danger came at Hannah I wasn't expecting it. I enjoyed the ending. I recommend you read this book.

4.5 Stars!! There is Hannah who is independent and helps her mom out. She is given the chance to win a bet. She just has to put up with a boss who has fired five people in the last few months, and she will get a cool $1000. Then there is Guy, who is the best attorney in NYC, and it is because he is a stickler. When he is given a three-month moratorium on firing his assistant and decides to hire Hannah, he is in for some trouble. See, he thinks she is beyond beautiful and very distracting. This is a humorous rom com with really good chemistry and a storyline that keeps you reading to the end. Enjoy.

Hannah has never been fired but she's about had it with her current boss. So she accepts the bet with girls fired by the billionaire bachelor boss, one of the two named partners in a large law firm. She doesn't know that she is walking into a real challenge. First of all, she has no experience as a legal secretary, the other partner's secretary whom HR said would help her gives her wrong or incomplete information, and for some reason, her boss keeps saving her from making fatal mistakes! As usual with this author's stories, there is plenty of action, feelings, breath-holding danger, and humor. Recommended!
I would have given more stars if not for the awful grammar/editing. Example (near beginning of ch 42): "All over was food spread around in the tiny kitchen" Example (mid-way through ch 45): "What do you mean exactly by you didn’t know I am her friend because she's smart or something else?" What the heck!?! Was this written in another language and THEN translated into English? There were at least 3 times when the word "barely" was used when "nearly" would have made more sense. The Grammarly app would have improved it greatly. The ending was unnecessarily rushed. The story is good enough that I didn't simply quit, so that's why it got 2 stars instead of only 1. I also like that the chapters are short. I doubt I'll try any other titles by this author.
First off this is written a bit differently. I’d say kind of like a stream of conscious feeling. It took me a while to finish it. I was busy, but I wasn’t in a hurry to go back. The actual bet part is kind of confusing. She’s not really friends with these girls. I was a little annoyed at hearing about how hot she is. It was such a chore for her to be so good looking that everyone wanted her.
The “surprise” at the end seemed random, and the climax of the book felt rushed and not very detailed.
Overall, it had a decent premise, but I just couldn’t connect with the characters and the scattered plot lines.
I wanted to give this book 4 stars, but too many things didn’t sit right with me.
I enjoyed the dual POV structure, which kept things somewhat engaging, but Hannah’s character honestly just made me cringe most of the time.
The beginning was okay and I was actually enjoying it but halfway through I had to force myself to keep going. And the ending? Predictable and kind of chaotic in the worst way.
The writing also did not do the story any favours And can we talk about how awkward and sexist it felt at times? Like Hannah offering sex to apologize for almost killing him. What even was that?
This office romance kept me glued to the pages. When three secretaries are fired by the same boss, Hannah takes the bet that she can keep the job but when she goes to work for Guy, she realizes why it is so difficult because he is a menace. Their relationship takes a turn, and things get intriguing until she finds out the real reason why the others were let go. Will she and Guy's relationship lead them along the path to a happily ever after.
