An in-depth guide for parents as they struggle to make informed decisions about vaccines for their children.
In Unavoidably Unsafe, Dr. Edward Geehr and Dr. Jeffrey Barke confront the prevailing beliefs surrounding childhood vaccines with unflinching scrutiny and bold insight. As seasoned physicians, they acknowledge the revered status vaccines hold in modern medicine while bravely questioning their safety and efficacy.
From the historical triumphs of polio eradication to the complexities of modern immunization schedules, Geehr and Barke unravel the layers of vaccine development and regulation. They shed light on the unintended consequences of vaccine mandates and the erosion of informed consent in the face of mounting pharmaceutical influence.
Drawing on decades of clinical experience and exhaustive research, the authors challenge conventional wisdom by addressing critical issues such The proliferation of childhood vaccines and their impact on public health The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act and its implications for vaccine safety The symbiotic relationship between pharmaceutical companies and regulatory agencies The shortcomings of Emergency Use Authorization and its implications for vaccine safety The presence of potentially harmful additives in vaccine formulations A fresh look at possible links between vaccines and autism Cautionary considerations regarding mRNA vaccines and their suitability for children Practical guidance for evaluating the risks and benefits of vaccines for individual children The significance of proper informed consent and patient advocacy in vaccination decisions Unavoidably Unsafe is not an indictment of vaccines but a call to arms for informed decision-making and transparency in healthcare. Geehr and Barke aim to empower parents, guardians, and healthcare providers with the knowledge needed to navigate the complex landscape of childhood immunization responsibly.
In a rapidly evolving medical landscape where uncertainties abound, Unavoidably Unsafe serves as a beacon of clarity and integrity, reaffirming the importance of critical thinking and patient-centered care in safeguarding the health and well-being of future generations.
Inconsistent, Misleading, and Disappointing I purchased Unavoidably Unsafe: Childhood Vaccines Reconsidered by Dr. Jeffrey Barke expecting an honest, well-researched critique of childhood vaccines, but I was sorely disappointed. The book, which carries a sensational title aimed at stoking fear, fails to provide consistent, reliable, or meaningful information to support its claims.
For example: In Chapter 12, Dr. Barke analyzes the Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) vaccine and assigns conflicting grades: • Children at high risk of severe illness or death from disease: Grade A • Vaccine safety and efficacy supported by randomized controlled clinical trials: Grade D • Vaccine does not significantly impact developing childhood immune, cardiovascular, neurological, hematological, hormonal, or musculoskeletal systems: Grade B
These grades are not only contradictory but also misleading. How can the vaccine be rated as non-impactful (Grade B) on critical developmental systems when Dr. Barke simultaneously acknowledges the lack of robust safety and efficacy data? The grade of D for randomized controlled clinical trials undermines any confidence in these assessments.
When I cross-referenced his claims with FDA package inserts for Hib vaccines (ActHIB, Hiberix, Pentacel, PedvaxHIB, and Vaxelis), I discovered alarming gaps in the book’s analysis: • ActHIB’s trials lacked a control group, and only 15% of the vaccinated subjects reported no serious or life-threatening adverse reactions. What about the other 85%? • Hiberix and Pentacel were tested against other vaccines, not placebos, with significant adverse reactions reported. • PedvaxHIB trials were conducted exclusively in Navajo populations, raising concerns about generalizability. • Vaxelis was tested with other vaccines, making it impossible to isolate its safety profile.
Given the absence of robust randomized controlled trials, Dr. Barke’s conclusions about safety and developmental impact seem fabricated to fit a narrative rather than rooted in science. If his grades acknowledge a lack of data, how can he confidently assign a B to safety categories?
Dr. Barke’s Instagram rhetoric amplifies vaccine hesitancy, yet this book surprisingly (and subtly) suggests the benefits of some vaccines might outweigh the risks. This contradiction feels like an intentional attempt to pander to anti-vaccine readers while hedging to avoid legal repercussions.
This book offers little substance and serves as a disservice to concerned parents seeking factual information. Instead of providing clarity, it capitalizes on fear and fuels distrust without offering solutions or consistency. Dr. Barke’s work does more harm than good, undermining legitimate discourse on vaccine safety.
I am returning this book and caution others against purchasing it. Dr. Barke’s sensationalism and lack of rigor hurt the movement he claims to support. Parents deserve better than this.

2.5 stars. This one was a little too much for me. The author goes through and grades the different vaccines based on a handful of different categories but then the explanation didn't really match the grade. The science was clearly opinionated most of the time and I don't feel any clearer about what I should/shouldn't do based on this book.
I really enjoyed this. Full of non-biased factual information on vaccines they push on newborns and children. Very good insight for moms to be! Helped to secure my already made decision for my daughter coming this year.
This was very informative and well-researched! I’d consider this a great resource for anyone who wants to learn about the vaccines that are a part of the childhood schedule, as well as how to research and make informed decisions about your personal health care! Also great for pregnant women who are recommended vaccines!
If you are reading this review, this is your sign to read this book… I was always pro vaccine and listened to what I was told by doctors in public health officials. This is making me reconsider a lot of what I’ve learned. Direct excerpts from the studies
This book is PACKED with information! I didn't care for the subjective grading system, because it was clear bias and didn't make much sense, but otherwise very informative.
