Eve Sylvester is young and broke and needs a job fast. After years of foster homes, backpacking and a sailing trip across the Pacific Ocean, she has lost contact with friends and family. She is alone, desperate—and pregnant.
Then she meets Julia and Christopher Hygate, a charming and glamorous couple, who seem to have the perfect loads of money and a breathtakingly beautiful mansion on a remote Tasmanian island. They make her a lucrative offer. Eve can move into their empty summerhouse and take up a very easy job.
Eve thinks she’s fallen on her feet—she has found a home, and her child will grow up in the aptly named Paradise Bay. But some things about the job don’t add up. Why must Eve stay out of sight? Why have the Hygates employed an ex-con to run their yacht-charter business? And what about the mysterious boats sailing in and out of the Hygates’ private marina? Has Eve made a deal with the devil? It’s too late to ask questions. Eve is already in far too deep.
Set against the stunning backdrop of a windswept island and its mysterious lighthouse, No One Will Know is a propulsive, seductive novel of suspense that reveals the terrible consequences of greed, staggering lies and fatal mistakes.
One BIG warning… Do not read the publisher provided synopsis for this book! Without it, you’re in for one heck of a trip. With it, you’ll likely guess one or two of the twists. Just know that it’s about a young woman who finds herself in trouble after a terrible tragedy. She thinks her luck has changed when she’s offered a job as a nanny for a wealthy couple. Needless to say, it doesn’t go quite to plan and she quickly discovers that nothing is as it seems. Even worse, she has no one to turn to. Now read on for my (mostly) gushing review…
After reading and loving The Girl in the Mirror, I couldn’t wait to read Rose Carlyle’s second novel, No One Will Know. Just as expected, the storyline was not only twisted, but it was deliciously unhinged in the best possible way. From its unguessable plot to the swiftly shifting sands of the premise, while I did have an inkling or two about the general direction, the finer details were well out of my grasp. And by the time I reached the last third of the book, I was shocked not just once but over and over. One twist was even brilliantly delivered on the very last page.
As for the characters, they were delightfully unlikeable as well as full of fictional melodramatic flair. That wasn’t just true of the personas, however. With plenty of extreme, over-the-top events occurring throughout the blindingly fast-paced plot, I quickly had to suspend all disbelief. Trust me when I say that I was more than happy to do it. After all, while far from realistic, each and every scene felt natural upon its arrival. I’m not sure how Ms. Carlyle pulled it off, but the crazy train vibe was utterly addictive. Combined with the character dynamic, I got a definite Kaira Rouda feel, who just so happens to be yet another favorite of mine.
All in all, despite a protagonist who felt a bit naïve, I was won over by this one hook, line, and sinker. On top of all of the above, Carlyle is a master at evocatively bringing to life sailing in all of its glory. A passion of my own, I could vividly hear the slapping of the halyards and see the splash of the waves. All told, along with the twisty storyline, untrustworthy characters, and dynamite setting, this meant one truly bingeable thriller. So if you haven’t been lucky enough to discover this author until now, take my review as your siren’s song to grab one—or both—of them now. Rating of 4.5 stars.
Thank you to Rose Carlyle and William Morrow for my complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

When I found out that the author of "Girl in the Mirror" had written another twisty thriller, I didn’t even read the blurb; I just pushed the request button as hard as I could, damaging a few keys on my keyboard. (I lose control when I see something so admirable; let my excitement take control.)
I can honestly say this new work by Rose Carlyle didn’t rock my world as much as “Girl in the Mirror” did because I found the main heroine incredibly naive, unable to see any red flags flying right in front of her face, changing her mind and taking irritatingly ridiculous actions that endangered her life. But I’m focusing on the positive sides: the writing style is fast-paced, intriguing, and riveting. You find yourself finishing half of the book in one sitting without realizing. The mystery behind all the schemes cannot be predicted. The epilogue was also well-executed and confusing! I said, "What the hell, did I get it right?" and I reread to make sure I got all the pieces of the puzzle into the right places. This is an exciting, wild ride with a lot of action, dramatic events wrapped up with smart twists. Even though I wanted to shake some sense into the heroine, I forgave her for her young age and inability to foresee danger, leading her to keep making terrible mistakes. At least her heart was in the right place.
Let’s reveal more about the plotline:
The story revolves around young Eve Sylvester, in her early twenties, whose love of her life died in front of her eyes in a car accident on the same day he was supposed to introduce her as his girlfriend to her rich parents, who still think he will propose to his ex, whom his family chose for him to date.
When Eve loses Xander in the accident and finds out she’s pregnant with his baby, she realizes Xander’s family does not want anything to do with her and even thinks she’s a gold digger pretending to carry their grandson. So the only solution for Eve is to leave their shared apartment with her dead lover, lying that she miscarried, and raising her baby alone.
But fate has other plans for her. She bumps into an old eccentric woman at the graveyard when she says her last goodbye to Xander. The woman takes pity on her, and even though Eve has no work experience, she still offers her a nanny job for a wealthy couple, giving her a card to arrange her interview.
When Eve flies to a secluded island (all expenses paid by her presumed bosses), she meets the picture-perfect couple Julia and Christopher Hygate, and she finally understands the reason why they chose a less experienced nanny candidate who is expecting a child for this job: they want to adopt her baby and hire her as the nanny for their own child. Eve hesitates to decide the future of her child. As an orphan, friendless, penniless single mother, she cannot give any opportunities to her child that the Hygates can provide, but what if she changes her mind and wants her baby back?
She finally accepts the offer, but she has no idea that by stepping into the Hygates’ secretive lifestyle and their eccentric shipping enterprise business, what kind of danger awaits her and her baby? Did she make the worst mistake by making a deal which was too good to be true?
Overall, even though Eve rubbed me the wrong way with her ultra-naive thinking and actions without thinking that made me jump from my seat and yell into the pages as if I’m a delusional person talking to her imaginary friend, the pacing and the storytelling between past and present that reveals so many great twists and the conclusion of the entire execution was really smart that made me upgrade my rating from 3.5 stars to 4 "motherhood is sacred" stars!
Rose Carlyle is an absolutely brilliant author. She knows a lot about onboard life! I am thrilled to be reading her future books as well.
Many thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for sharing this riveting twisty thriller’s digital reviewer copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.

ARC REVIEW- Publishing Date- 10/1/2024 My Rating- 3.85- 4 Stars
This book had me on the edge of my seat. It’s not perfect but the vibes were vibing.
The Plot- Eve, is struck with a terrible tragedy and has no family or close friends in her life to turn to. She thinks her luck may have changed when she is offered a job as a nanny with a mysterious family on a remote, luxurious island!🏝️ Of course Eve accepts the offer and once she is there, she realizes she's in over her head.
My Thoughts- This was a highly entertaining and bingeable read. So over the top but the ride was so fun. The characters were untrustworthy and the plot twist I DID NOT see coming. I had to put down the book and stare at the wall because I was so perplexed. The main character Eve was so DUMB tho. She was getting on my nerves. Like how are you that gullible? BUT she did make up for it at the end.
This thriller is kinda of a slow burn. There were some chapters that dragged out but overall a fast pace thriller. I definitely recommend this book.
✨Thanks to NetGalley, The Author, & William Marrow Publishing for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review✨
Reeling from the sudden tragic death of her fiancee, Eve is left without any means to support herself. When she learns she is pregnant, she desperately needs to find a way to provide for her baby. As luck would have it, she meets a woman who works for a wealthy couple looking for a nanny. They are also willing to let her live on their island with her child. Is the job offer too good to be true?
Better late than never! I have the ARC of this book and had such a difficult time finishing it. I really enjoyed Carlyle’s debut thriller so I was really excited for this one.
The first half of the plot is really implausible, ridiculous, and difficult to believe. I couldn’t get invested in Eve because she was so gullible and had no idea where the plot was headed. The structure is also strange because there is such a jump in time between sections. The second half is faster paced and contains twist after twist after twist. Usually, I enjoy lots of surprises in my thrillers but these just felt inauthentic and gratuitous.
Please explain how a six year old boy is able to successfully drive a yacht by himself after one lesson? I just couldn’t buy it.
The book contains very similar plot elements as Carlyle’s first book (babies, yachts, and wealthy families) but just wasn’t as successful.
2.5/5 stars rounded up for the slightly better second half
Trigger warning: child trafficking
Expected publication date: 10/1/24
Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow publishing for the ARC of No One Will Know in exchange for an honest review.
This was absolutely amazing, I could not put it down.
There’s not much I can say about the plot without giving away spoilers, so I will just say a woman is hired to be a nanny for a wealthy family, but nothing is what it seems.
Something about this author’s writing style pulled me in from the 1st page. I really enjoyed the whole story. There was a lot going on. A lot of mystery, heartbreak, and violence.
I enjoyed the ending a lot. It was action packed. Highly recommend. I will definitely read more of this author’s books.
Thank you to Netgalley and William Morrow books for this free advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
What happens when a destitute unwed pregnant woman is introduced to a manipulative wealthy couple?
Told in multiple timelines with different plotlines, this "thriller" had more convoluted, implausible, and far-fetched "thrills" than this reader could count.
THE END RESULT? The book was dizzying, eye-rolling, and disappointing.
QUESTION FOR THE AUTHOR: Rose Carlyle, have you ever met a 6-year-old boy?
I am a boy-mom (and grandma of 3 grandsons!) and the 6-year-old in this book had the physical dexterity and mental acuity of a 16-year-old.
When finishing the book, my painful rolling eyes hurt too much to appreciate the book's final clever twist.
I enjoyed this author's debut novel so perhaps my expectations were too high.
I listened to the audiobook read by Siho Ellsmore, who did an excellent job with the narration.
Kudos to the author for her heartfelt Author's Note.
I'm so excited to tell you all that No One Will Know, my second novel, will be released in September/October this year! I've just finished reading/editing it for the millionth time, and it's now in the hands of my wonderful publishers in the USA and Australia, to be distributed worldwide.
I'm so excited to introduce my readers to my heroine, Eve, a character who is very close to my heart. Young, isolated and vulnerable, Eve is based on my own beloved grandmother, Eileen, who was taken into state care as a child. No One Will Know is a thriller set on a windswept island off the coast of Australia, with a plot full of twists and turns, but it's also a heartfelt story about motherhood, courage, and what makes a family.
I hope you all enjoy it—and let me know when you figured out the big twist! My readers are so special to me and I love hearing from you. Thank you so much for reading my novels!
**Many thanks to Scene of the Crime and William Morrow for an ARC of this book provided via NetGalley!**
When you go to buy a used car, it can often feel like you are walking through a minefield.
Even if you find a reputable dealership and have heard good things about the personnel, there's ALWAYS the chance that your 'dream' car...you know the one you just CAN'T believe is such a good deal, with such great mileage, and a 'all of THIS is included!?' sort of warranty could turn out to be be a total and complete lemon the minute you pull in your driveway at home.
And while this 'deliciously twisty and suspenseful' novel promised all of those too good to be true sort of promises...the unhinged, implausible ridiculousness of this book had me scrambling to brush up on lemon laws...because even more precious than gold is the TIME I will never get back after going on this ridiculous journey with one of the most naive narrators I have EVER read...and honestly not caring at ALL whether she made it out unscathed!
Our story begins with said narrator, Eve Sylvester, and a quick glimpse into her great grand love affair with Xander (and get prepared to read that name...A LOT), which is cut short when he tragically passes away in a (completely unnecessary) car accident. Eve is heartbroken, and for some reason Xander's parents seem to blame her for the incident. With no other close relatives, family, or friends of her own (why, we aren't ever told) this down on her luck woman finds out even MORE shocking news: she is carrying Xander's baby. With the prospect of having to raise this child on her own, with very little money or support, she seems to have the proverbial storm cloud following her...until the PERFECT stranger JUST HAPPENS to sidle up to her with an offer she cannot refuse...go figure. 🙄
Turns out uber-wealthy couple Julia and Christopher Hygate are in need of a nanny for their child...and are willing to let Eve be a live-in nanny to said child on their gorgeous and secluded private island. (Yup, no red flags there! 🥱) Eve jumps at the prospect to give her life some meaning again and accepts. But when she arrives, she finds not one but TWO rooms (one set up for a baby boy and the other for a baby girl) and realizes that the baby she will be caring for will be her own...sort of. The Hygates need to convince the world that Eve's baby is truly theirs in order to inherit a great fortune...so Julia's going to wear a fake belly, abstain from alcohol, etc., and once the kiddo is born, Eve will slide into the role of 'nanny' that she was sold at the get-go. But the crew at the Hygate mansion seems a bit...off, and there are unexplained boats going in and out of the marina at all hours...and Eve begins to get suspicious. (FINALLY) Was this picture-perfect opportunity that fell into her lap for no particular reason ACTUALLY too good to be true after all?! 😱
😑
I tried very hard to keep sarcasm out of that quick recap...but with a plot this bonkers, I'm not sure that could have happened, honestly. From about 15% in, I knew this book was going to be completely off the rails and the eye rolls began...and they never truly let up. From a heavy emphasis on mourning Xander (which I guess was supposed to make us feel sorry for Eve but which I quickly found to be grating and repetitive) to the complete lack of common sense exhibited by Eve at pretty much all times, this is the narrator you're going to want to bop upside the head...over and over. Even in her blissful ignorance at the beginning (before she's involved in the Hygate's schemes) she asks some pretty straightforward questions and doesn't get a direct answer AT ALL:
"Can I ask how old your son or daughter is? Zelde said you've just got one child, but she didn't mention whether it's a boy or a girl."
"That's right, just the one," said Christopher, and then he put Zelde back on, and she booked me a flight for the next afternoon.
...Okay. So not only did Christopher not answer your question, but apparently Eve thought she should a) not protest this at all and b) get on a flight paid for by a cagey stranger.
Riiiiight. 🤦♀️
This was my first clue that this book was going to descend into weirdness and stay there, and trust me...it does. No matter how uneasy Eve feels at any given time, she (in the next breath) thinks everything is fine and is willing to go along with every scheme. As an author, Carlyle makes this even more unclear, as conversations not only lack any sort of natural flow, but are at times laughably odd. I didn't have any sort of buy-in, and Eve was constantly TELLING us details rather than Carlyle showing us through her storytelling, which is a huge pet peeve of mine. There's also a plot line involving gecko and lizard smuggling that I guess maybe makes sense if you're from Australia, but to me was COMPLETELY out of left field.
And then there's the child in question, Alec and Carlyle's description of him, which may be one of the most unrealistic parts of the book. (And again, there are plenty to choose from!) Alec, a SIX year old, not only can drive a boat, but speaks in articulate, fluent sentences with adult-level vocabulary words in them too. I'm not sure how many children the author has spent time around lately, but Alec isn't even presented as some sort of prodigy...this is just 'normal'. We are supposed to feel all of this tortured unhappiness at the situation and the fact that Eve isn't allowed to just TELL Alec she is his mother, etc...but I kept questioning WHY she had put herself in this position in the first place, since she quite literally SIGNED UP FOR THIS...and even when more of an explanation as to what is going on is revealed, you aren't going to be more sympathetic to anyone.
All of this builds to what can only be described as the Far-Fetched Cherry on top of the Unbelievable Pie...and as someone who is not exactly a fan of a plot involving this particular set of crimes (and no, it's not just gecko smuggling although I'm not for THAT, either!) I wish I had known what this book was truly about going in so I could have skipped it entirely. There is an attempt at a 'gotcha' twist pretty far along in the book, but although it was confusing for about fourteen seconds, I didn't get fooled. And when the big main 'bad guy' is revealed, everything gets even MORE ridiculous. To cap it off, there is an incredibly unnecessary epilogue where we are supposed to believe something even MORE unrealistic than everything you've read thus far...and let's just say, Carlyle could have left well enough (or what was left of it) ALONE.
Remember that minefield I mentioned earlier? Although the minefield itself can be plenty dangerous when the bombs are a-ticking below, this book and an already-decimated stretch of land had one other thing in common:
I absolutely loved The Girl In The Mirror… so I could NOT wait to get my hands on @rosecarlyle100 new book.. No One Will Know! Thank you so much @williammorrowbooks for my gorgeous #gifted copy!! 🥰🫶 Pub date is 10/1🥳🥳 After a stunning debut @rosecarlyle100 delivers another fantastic twisted thriller. 😍 Listen to this..
Our girl Eve just lost the love of her life. He died… right in front of her eyes. She has nothing left in life… or so she thinks. 😭
Meet Julia and Christopher… the perfect couple..💍..they literally have it all. Guess what?? They are willing to share their world with Eve. Their private island 🏝 fantastic food…and her own private cottage. Sounds to good to be true.. right?? 🤔😬
I mean come on thriller lovers… what could possibly go wrong on a private island 🏝 with stangers? 🤷♀️ NO ONE WILL KNOW.. 🤫
Holy twisted crazy thriller. 😳😳😳 The things that happened on this island… were shocking and twisted. 👏👏Once again @rosecarlyle100 had me up way too late! I couldn’t put this book down.
🏝🏝🏝 Is this on your TBR? Have you read The Girl In The Mirror?
Oh my goodness, Rose Carlyle has done it again. Girl in the Mirror was one of my favourite books when it came out in 2020. I was so excited to read No One Will Know and it did not disappoint. I devoured it in just a few hours, even reading between quarters at the football. I just had to find out what would happen next.
The story is one that is tough to talk about without major spoilers. Go into this knowing nothing and you will love it. It is a story of motherhood, betrayal, murder, a family drama and so much more. Set on an isolated island off Tasmania, it is the perfect location for this twisty and shocking thriller. While you won’t like many of the characters, and you will question the main characters decision, you will absolutely have strong feelings whilst reading this book. It will go where you don’t expect and you just have to go with it.
Fantastic read 👏👏
Thank you so much to William Morrow for my advanced copy of this amazing book to read. Publishes on October 1st.
3.75 Stars — NO ONE WILL KNOW is a far-fetched but fun domestic thriller. The main character was so naive! I found myself yelling at her several times. I guess desperate times call for desperate measures. I enjoyed the twists, especially the epilogue. Thank you to the publisher for sending me a review copy of this book. Opinions are my own.
A fast-paced suspenseful story, set on a secluded island.
It is worth reading this story without reading the publisher blurb, in order to fully appreciate the array of unexpected twists and turns offered in the storyline.
This story features a desperate young woman who is pregnant and penniless, and a wealthy couple who are offering her a job as their son’s nanny.
Give this one a read if you enjoy morally complex characters, or atmospheric isolated settings.
I am keen to read more from New Zealand author Rose Carlyle.
I’m torn here. There are pieces of this story that are good. However, it’s a *very* slow burn and just didn’t grab my attention until almost the very end. It’s partly….well, mostly because the main character, Eve, is such an idiot. I don’t like to be mean, but I feel like if she had an ounce of sense, she would have left the very first day! I understand that she didn’t have any family or prospects, but I think she should have been able to sense the high level of danger, *especially* since there are allusions to her intelligence throughout. Okay, so USE that intelligence and get the H out of there! So many bafflingly stupid decisions were made. I might try another book by this author, but I have to rate this one a 3, and in my mind, that’s not a great rating.
I received an eARC from NetGalley and William Morrow (thank you!) in exchange for my honest opinion.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
fun and twisty but I’ll never think about it again. enough to keep me entertained and engaged, whilst being boring enough that if I took a break I easily forgot what had happened in the previous chapter.
it’s written well, but the writing style is so Australian it hurts. (soz)
there’s also just a lot of scenarios in this book that had me giving major side eye. the six year old able to drive a yacht by himself???? I think not darlin. she’s torn up/bleeding/wet and no one thinks to ask why???? get a grip girlfriend.
anyway, it was giving Freida McFadden in the end and I was like woah she’s just really throwing everything on the fire babes.
I really liked the authors note at the end!!!! awks but probs the best part seeing it all come together. the way the story finally all made sense made me happy. I liked finding out why we were diving into certain topics throughout the novel - that was cool.
Do I recommend? Yes, but only if it’s already on your TBR.
I absolutely loved The Girl In The Mirror and when I saw this pop up, I just had to read it!
A woman is left alone, pregnant and with nothing. She runs into an opportunity to become a nanny for a wealthy couple. The couple are very unlikable characters. I can’t really go into too much detail or it will spoil the fun.
The first half starts off slow then definitely picks up in the second. Thank you to Rose Carlyle, William Morrow and NetGalley for the opportunity.
I’m not going to get into the plot of the 📕, other than to say that Eve, who is in her younger 20s, is struck with a terrible tragedy and has no family or close friends in her life to turn to. Her ‘luck’ may have changed when she meets a mysterious family who wants to hire her to be their nanny on a remote, luxurious island!🏝️ Of course she accepts the offer and once she is there, all is not as it seemed it would be (shocker)‼️👀👀👀
Strange doesn’t even begin to describe the situation Eve has landed herself in. The family and their many servants are shady, odd, sketchy, conniving, and for the most part, have no redeeming qualities- at all!
If you enjoyed ‘The Girl in the Mirror’ like I did, I feel you will also like ‘No One Will Know’. The title of this book is perfect because I absolutely had zero idea what direction this book would take for the most part.
There are small twists throughout and also some huge twists that were really surprising! You do have to suspend disbelief for this one but overall it was a good, quick read (although it was slow to start). The very end had an extra surprise that I appreciated and that I felt brought the book full circle!
Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!❤️
There are lots of trigger warnings in this book that I won’t divulge here due to spoilers, but you can inbox me if you want!
There's naive and then there's this blatantly dumb main character. While the expectation started fairly low, this plot turned out to be even more outlandish than I imagined and ended with me wishing I could get my time back to read something more satisfying. Twist at the end? Yes, but twist to put this back on the shelf because it just isn't worth it.
I received a free copy of, No One Will Know, by Rose Carlyle, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Eve is pregnant and alone, she thinks she has the perfect answer when Julie and Christopher want her to be their babies nanny. I did not care for this book at all, Julie and Christopher are horrible people.
⭐️4.5 Stars⭐️ No One Will Know by Rose Carlyle is a twisty, fast paced and suspenseful thriller tale that I found addictive. I love this author, she’s brilliant, check out her other book Girl In The Mirror also.
This story is set in Tasmania and is about motherhood, deception and murder. The characters are wonderfully unlikeable and untrustworthy and our main protagonist Eve is quite naive.
Eve is pregnant, alone and broke after tragedy strikes. She is introduced to the Hygates, a wealthy couple who make her an offer she cannot refuse. Eve is invited to work for the Hygates as their nanny in their luxurious home on an isolated island in Tasmania.
The island gives off very creepy vibes, but I can’t say anymore so sit back and enjoy this compelling and sinister tale.
Publication Date 01 October 2024 Publisher Text Publishing
Thanks so much Text Publishing for a copy of the book to read.
This was quite over the top, but still enjoyable. Eve finds herself in a horrible position after the death of her boyfriend. All the plans they made together disappeared and his family wants nothing to do with her. Finding out she’s pregnant adds even more complex feelings. In her vulnerable state she is asked to be a nanny for a wealthy family. She thinks this may be the best option, but nothing about the agreement seems to fully make sense. Eve finds herself in another undesirable position but thinks it’s all worth it to raise her child on a peaceful island.
While many things just don’t make sense throughout the book, it all comes together at the end. The majority of the book is told through Eve’s perspective. Later on a couple more perspectives are added to pull the story together. This is a good read as long as you can go with the flow and enjoy it purely on a storytelling stance.
Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow Paperbacks for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. This review will be shared on NetGalley, Goodreads, and Amazon.
This book was full of surprises - in a wonderful entertaining way.
So much to tell … but I don’t want to give too much away. Expect the unexpected. Expect unlikeable characters (some to the point of annoying 🙄) Expect deception, lies, betrayals and twister size twists! 🌪️
Totally bingable with a little suspension of belief needed - but utterly worth it for the cray cray and where nothing is as it appears to be.
Unique, clever and I highly recommend it 🤩
Huge thanks @textpublishing for an advanced reading copy 🙏💌
What I enjoyed about this book was the characters and the ending.
1) - Characters - Eve was the one I connected to the most. Although she was naive and trusting, I was rooting for her and on her side the whole time.
2)- The ending. - Now that was unexpected. Unpredictable. Just the way I like it. I loved how it kept me reading just one more chapter to find out how it was going to end.
This book is all about manipulation, betrayals and blackmail.
“twisty and suspenseful” where? this just might be the most convoluted, far-fetched, and mind-numbingly boring mystery i have ever had the misfortune to suffer through.
The synopsis for this book was so good, I just had to read it. I thought I was in for a popcorn thriller, as the trope of a naive nanny working for a crazy wealthy family is used often, but this is actually a deep, dark thriller that deals with serious topics, all while taking the reader through a fantastic story!
Eve is a young woman who’s had a hard life. Her parents died when she was young, her Nanna raised her until she died, and then Eve dropped out of high school and started traveling the world, taking odd jobs whenever she could. While working as a crew member on a yacht, she meets Xander, who turns out to be the love of her life. He wants to marry her, and with his significant family money, Eve thinks this is her shot at a normal life, especially when she realizes she’s pregnant with his baby. Then, on their way to meet his parents to come out as a couple, they are in a car accident that kills Xander. Eve is once again all alone.
While visiting Xander’s grave one day, she’s approached by an older woman named Zelde. She works for Christopher and Julia Hygate, who live on a secluded island, and Julia is about to have a baby. They are looking for a nanny, and Eve is invited to meet them. Why would they hire a pregnant, homeless and penniless woman with no experience? Because Julia isn’t really pregnant - and she wants Eve’s baby. At first Eve refuses, but soon realizes this child will grow up with money and two parents, and they’ve even invited her to stay as a nanny to be in its life. She agrees, as hard as it is, and spends several years with the family.
Then the entire story flips around with a twist I never saw coming; I’m impressed if anyone figures out this twist before it’s revealed! It’s been a long time since a book has shocked me like this, and it made for an ending fraught with both fear and hope. The writing in this is great, the whole story is very entertaining, but that twist before the brilliant ending is what pushed my rating up to five stars. All I can say is, wow! I wouldn’t mind a sequel to this one…
(Thank you to William Morrow Paperbacks, Rose Carlyle and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.)
🚤In October 2020, Rose Carlyle entered my reading sphere with her mind blowing debut, The Girl in the Mirror. This book became a firm favourite and it definitely stayed with me long after I closed the final page. Now the wait is finally over, Rose Carlyle is back with her follow up release, No One Will Know. With loss, desperation, loneliness, motherhood, fragility, blackmail and relationships dominating the storyline, it is a novel not to be missed.
🚤In this dramatic suspense showpiece, No One Will Know unveils the story of Eve Sylvester, a young woman who finds herself without a home and partner when she discovers she is pregnant. A lifeline comes via a wealthy couple who offer Eve sanctuary as well as a job offer that cannot be refused. But as Eve’s suspicions are aroused by strange movements made in the bay she has now made a home thanks to the Hygate family. What has Eve got herself into?
🚤I will purposefully aim to reveal very little about this book as I promise you it is so important to go into it with virtually nothing. All you need to know is that the main female character is desperate, and she does make some outlandish choices. However, you have to put yourself in Eve’s shoes and consider if you would be tempted to do the same if you were young, solo, grieving and without money or support. Eve’s rescuers in a sense do offer plenty of suspicion and you are right to question their motives, along with the other players in the Hygate empire. There are plenty of plot deviations, curves and turns in this ripping suspense tale. I loved the Paradise Bay setting, which highlights the raw beauty of the shores off Tasmania, it was the perfect backdrop for this tale. I must admit to having a few niggling answered questions at the end of this one, but I absolutely loved it.
🌟🌟🌟🌟💫4.5 stars, thanks to @textpublishing for the copy, out now!
This was an over-the-top, popcorn-style thriller that was ridiculous but kinda fun. Everyone’s insufferable, so it’s not too stressful to watch them all get their comeuppance hehe 🤪.
If you’re sensitive about topics like neglect, mother-baby bonds, or irresponsible caregiving, this might be a distressing read.
Energy: Diverting. Derelict. Scathing.
🐕 Howls The main character’s level of denial could be frustrating sometimes when she overexplained her thinking. Super predictable plot. I think I would have found this dull/annoying sometimes if I read it as text – as audio the classic villain monologues were kind of fun.
🐩 Tail Wags The train wreck of a story. The main character making one bad decision after another. Still entertaining even though I wasn’t rooting for anyone. Easy listening audiobook.
Scene: 🇦🇺 Set on a remote Tasmanian island, Australia. Perspectives (2): Our MC finds out they’re pregnant just as the father, their new boyfriend, dies in a car crash. Penniless and alone, they are met with skepticism from his rich family who they were on the way to meet. We also get the perspective later on in the book of a character with a past who has just gotten married and wants a baby. Timeline: Current (2010s or 2020s). Six years after a birth. Eight years before a birth. 🔥 Fuel: Twists and turns. Conflict, drama, tea. Pacing. High stakes. Will the main character take the offer to be a nanny on the remote island? Will she be able to keep up the façade if she does? Can she trust her employers to keep their side of the bargain? 📖 Cred: Over-the-top Melodrama
Mood Reading Match-Up: • Potential unreliable narrator • Secret inheritance scheme • Keeping secrets, in cahoots • Disaster of a situation, red flags everywhere • Twisty, easy-to-follow, plot-driven narratives • Melodramatic popcorn thriller plots • How far would you go for your child? • Insufferable characters and caricatures • Tagging along with the MC who tells us all her thoughts/feels/plans/assumptions
Content Heads-Up: Sexual content (off page, brief). Pregnancy, birth (on page). Loss of romantic partner. Car accident (on page; brief description, fatal). Fire (accident, burns, scarring). Kidnapping (baby). Trafficking. Smuggling, organized crime, gun violence. Narcissism.
This is one of those wild fantastical thrillers that you just want to keep reading, even though it's completely preposterous!
Eve finds out she's pregnant after she's lost her wealthy boyfriend in an accident. His family wants nothing to do with her, so she's adrift. She finds herself recruited by a wealthy couple, the Hygates, to be their nanny in a remote island location. She soon realizes, however, that they don't have a child: they want hers. They offer Eve the opportunity to raise her own child in utter luxury in return for adopting it.
Now, is Eve naive for not seeing a million red flags about this situation? Yes. The story is silly and crazy, but shines in its focus on Eve's determination and a mother's love for her child. The characters are dark, the remote setting is fun, and it's just an all-around good page turner/escape, if you can set aside your need for a believable story. 4 stars.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and William Morrow in return for an unbiased review.
I really enjoyed this book! I read it in an afternoon! The only reason I didn’t leave 5 stars was due to the final twist. I believe authors feel like they need to write one more twist that just ruins the book. Just leave well enough alone! Besides that, I loved everything about it! It was a unique plot, and the pacing of the book was perfect! Eve was a very likable character and, at one point, I felt tears in my eyes. I also loved the descriptions of the ocean, and its magical lure! I will definitely check out more by this author! Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!
another bingeable thriller from Carlyle! I went into this one blind and i feel like that’s the best way to go - it starts with some bizarre incidents but then when we get about 20% in the main plot of the story changes completely. It was a fun ride and I can’t believe I didn’t see the main twist coming! although (maybe a minor spoiler) I was kind of disappointed we never circled back to the events of the book’s opening, so I guess everything there was just as it seemed?
