SERENE If she loses herself loving him, is it love at all?
Growing up with Nolan, Serene had witnessed the rise and fall of his faith. When his talent shot them both to fame, Serene's love for him made her stay. However, as he drifted further from the faith and pulled her along with him, Serene had to ask herself if he was worth losing it all. "Love others as you love yourself." Could she truly love Nolan if she didn't know who she was anymore?
NOLAN He gained it all to lose it all, so he can find his way back to love.
Nolan Stone was born for the stage. Judged and rejected by the church, the only reason he had to keep the faith was Serene. When she abandoned him, his faith went with her. When circumstances intertwined their lives back together, was he using God to get to her? Or was God using her to get to him?
I didn't expect to be so emotionally moved (as a whole) like I was.
I didn't expect to read it in two sittings.
If you have recently doubted your purpose or if God can redeem you from a path/life of bad choices, this story addresses that yes, God has a purpose for you and, yes, God can redeem you from a path/life of bad choices.
This story IS a romance, but there are underlying layers of hope, love, and forgiveness. Of second chances, new beginnings, and healing.
These characters are relatable and don't make you feel that these kinds of things can only happen in fiction. I felt their decisions and actions were too life-like or uncanny to some of my own to deny that Serene and Nolan's story of healing can be for anyone.
Highly recommend to those who enjoy clean Christian fiction romance and want strong messages of hope.
*(I received an ARC from the author. All thoughts expressed are my own and was not required to write a positive review.)*
One thing this book sparked in my heart is with and in God there is always hope.
I find it difficult to write reviews for books like this. Not because this book wasn't good but because it was great, heartwarming and inspiring. And I feel my review won't do justice to it.
Meeting the reckless, daring and confident Nolan was enough to get me geared to finishing the book. Life so far had been unfair to him and meeting the quiet and supportive Serene was a lifeline for him. He loved Music and Serene so much he was prepared and did everything he could for both. I loved reading how along the line he got to realize only God deserved such devotion.
Serene had been loved by Nolan since they were five. And she became his shadow. She got interesting to me when she knew she was loosing herself in Nolan's life and stardom and she didn't even know who she was or God's purpose for her life.
The story of Red and Ice is a big tear jeeker but a great faith builder that God is not far from the prodigal. He has the heart of every man in his hands and he always brings them back home.
This book is appropriate for teens and young adults and indeed everyone who loves a great prodigal story with a beautiful dose of romance.
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
This is my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. I appreciate how she wrote this story the same way it could happen in life. Serene and Nolan met when they were 5 years old when she moved next door to them. They became the best little friends spending all their time together playing and going to church on Sunday as Serene's dad was the pastor. This story takes us into the lives of Serene and Nolan as they grow up and find what it is they would like to do in life. Life is never quite the way we expect, dreams and friendships change and Serene and Nolan find this out. This is book doesn't sugarcoat life and its hurts and its enjoyment. It shows us how to depend on God through everything and this is something even Christians can struggle with. I enjoyed this book and hopefully there will be a next book to go with it. I received a free download of this book from the publisher. I am leaving this review because I hope it will help you decide to give it a try, this is my own honest opinion of the story.
This is the first book that I read by this author. The premise was interesting, and I did mostly like the characters.
What I did not like ... the characters were extremely successful in all avenues of life at a fairly young age. Some of the supernatural aspects were a little bit beyond my comfort level. And a few of the descriptions of prodigal behavior were a bit blunt. I would not recommend this book for anyone younger than high school.
What I did like .. this book did powerfully portray the beauty of God's redemption. The struggles were real. God's forgiveness is amazing.
I really liked the chapter titles. The story did go back and forth in different time periods for the characters. At times that was a bit confusing. But mostly I did like being given a glimpse of their current behaviors and then going back in time to understand their motivations. There is a sequel to this book that I might read. I would probably give this author another chance.
Wow wow wow, i think i just found a new favorite Christian author. Wow. I loved loved this book. I got it as a freebie but wow, i defiantly would have bought it no doubt. Thank you for your generosity!
The story line is your about a boy and girl, GOD and Music . I don't want to go into detail about the story line and spoil it for future readers but its so real. not mushy mushy at all. Nolan and Serene s story is so romantic but in a real way you can totally relate to not in a "this can never happen in real life" way that some romance authors tend to adopt. I loved the fact that God was so prevalent in this book, you didn't have to LOOK for HIM like the angle some christian authors tend to take.
To Joanna, please keep up the good work. To use your talent for God s Glory in Fiction, thats just amazing!
This story pulled me in all the way to the end! Who hasn’t questioned God’s purpose for themselves? We may think we know, like Nolan did, but God’s ways are always so much higher than ours. I loved following Serene and Nolan as they discovered just where their place was and what they were meant to do. I’m excited for the series to continue, so I can learn more about these characters and find out what happens to them!
A powerful story of chasing our dreams, walking out a life of faith, finding ourselves, loving and letting go, and surrendering to Gods timing in our lives. This story of childhood friends who just know they are meant to be forever together, but then in the process of growing up and chasing their dreams, they realize they aren’t after the same things anymore. Even as they do life apart, they still feel drawn to one another but it never seems to be the right time. Is their hope for their love or is it time to let go. I love how the author does a mix of modern day and flashbacks to various points in their lives. The transitions are very smooth and well timed.
And I have to say I’ve had the privilege of reading some of this authors earlier writings and I see so much depth and growth in her writing now. Her writing style is very polished and easy to read. I found myself so pulled into this story that Nolan and Serene seem to jump off the pages. I feel like I know them in a tangible way. And interestingly enough, you as the reader get a front seat at the growth process of these characters as they wrestle with what life throws at them while finding their way. I highly recommend this book.
Some of my favorite quotes -Why was it that no matter how many things he’d done to get over Serene, he still wasn’t over her? -whispered a prayer to God. “I surrender him and all the hurt I feel to You. Help me love You more than I ever loved him.”
Joanna has crafted a beautiful story about a young girl whose love for a boy grows so much that she finds herself being sucked along in his orbit and away from God. Many of us who are Christians and have fallen in love have asked ourselves: is this the person that God has for me? And if it isn't, can I walk away? Joanna explores this struggle with depth and heart.
Then there's Nolan: prodigiously talented and charismatic, but damaged from a broken home, a painful legacy, and terrible treatment from holier-than-thou church members. His and Serene's love story is beautiful and beautifully told.
This series has long been on my TBR, and I'm grateful that I finally had the opportunity to read the first Prodigals book. This is definitely more on the grittier side of Christian fiction and does not shy away from referencing sin. Told using a series of flashbacks, readers are able to better understand the decisions made by Nolan Stone and Serene Sinclair in this rock star romance. The scenes are raw, and the emotions conveyed are effective at showing just how much love can bless and hurt. There were multiple chapters where my heart went out to Serene and her struggle in handing everything over to God, including her relationship with Nolan.
I would say that based on the writing and the gripping depth of the story expressed by the author, it is certainly a five-star read. I only struggled a little bit because I’m more sensitive to reading accounts of sexual sin, but for anyone else, I can easily see how this is a top-notch book that explores forgiveness and God’s perfect timing in a delicate manner. I appreciate that sin is not glorified in this book as Joanna Alonzo does an excellent job of showing the ramifications of this behaviour and the effects it can have on others. Readers wanting more of an edge to their books that are more realistic and redemptive will find it here.
The One Who Rocked Away is the second-chance romance of childhood friends Serene and Nolan. Serene is a pastor's daughter with loving parents who has a deep experience of faith tied to her painting. Nolan's parents are estranged, and he and his sister live in the shadow of their father and older brother's addiction and eventual death.
Nolan benefits from the love shown by Serene's family, but somewhere along the way, he puts Serene ahead of God as his greatest love, and bit by bit Serene and Nolan's relationship begins to unravel despite their deep love for one another.
Enter the lures of fame and wealth for Nolan that eventually land him at rock bottom where (no surprise here) he and Serene can try again.
I liked the characters and the storyline well enough, and the ending resolved just as the reader would hope.
A story of two people who fell in love and lost their way. Redemption and grace, true love and the supernatural!
I love this story! it was so relatable in a sense where they EXPERIENCE the presence of God in a miraculous way and yet still find themselves questioning His existence, which is so refreshing because its something almost every Christian has to deal with. I also love the fact that true love prevails between them, even though they went through so much heartbreak. I found myself feeling for both of them; sad when they were sad and happy when they were happy.
I would definitely recommend this book, Joanna is a brilliant writer and does well to draw the reader in and her stories are SO relevant to our lives as Christians in church and everyday life.
Two worlds collide; a talent for music and the other for dance. They started as childhood friends then it blossomed to romance. Growing up in church, they followed God. However, Nolan started to drift away pulling Serene along with him. I recommend this story for those who have chased their dreams but began to lose themselves along the way. Serene recognized quickly, it took Nolan a while. The character felt relatable, and the situations were handled well and clean.
The One Who Rocked Away is a story of redemption. The prodigal returning home.
It is clearly evident that the author has a deep love for the Lord. The story of redemption comes through loud and clear, and is naturally integrated into this story.
Told with many flashbacks, we learn of Nolan and Serena's history and the hurts that he allowed to draw him away from the Lord and into a downward spiral. Though there were so many, and though they each went back to a different point in Nolan and Serena's lives, it was not difficult to follow and keep track of what happened when.
In his hurting and rebellious state, Nolan made many very poor choices. I loved Serena's heart that saw the way he was becoming an idol to her and how she was walking away from the things she knew were right for him. And her determination to do what was right and make the hard and right choice. I admired her and wanted to cheer for her stand when she made it.
Nolan, on the other hand, was arrogant, deceitful and a bit self-centered. After being hurt by Serena leaving the tour, he determined to hurt her back - which he did. As he spiraled out of control, using his new singing partner and abusing alcohol, I had a hard time liking him. Yes, I did understand his pain and motivation; I just didn't like watching him and had a little trouble seeing the good side of him. The side Serena loved.
The church Serena's father pastored was very charismatic some elements were a stretch for me. If this is a concern for you, please take note.
The One Who Rocked Away was very difficult for me to rate. So much of what I'm thinking about it is very much personal preference and about what I like to read in books. Yet, the story was good and well written. While the details of Nolan's turning back from the Lord covered a large portion of the story, it was not done inappropriately. I opted to rate it for its merit and not my emotional reaction and therefore the four stars. Readers who enjoy Christian fiction that deals with grittier issues will most likely enjoy this story.
I was given a copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.
Funny story/Confession time: I read the first 100 pages, pried myself away from this book, started The One Who Wrote Away, finished it, and came back to this story. I regret nothing. ;)
This book! Oh wow. I'm just sitting here, wondering why I didn't start this series sooner, but knowing that it all happens at the right timing (meaning I know I appreciate its message more today than if I had read it a few years before). Nolan and Serene's story just grabbed me from the first pages, if not the blurb, and never let go. I definitely wondered about them whenever I had to put the book down, and just couldn't read fast enough, though I didn't want to reach the end at the same time.
If you think Christians are perfect and never doubt their faith, read this book. If you think you're too far gone and there's no way God could ever forgive all the things you've done in your past, read this book. I love that there's a message for everyone, and how beautifully heartbreaking yet filled with God's grace this story was, as well as how perfectly represented this is in Nolan's and Serene's lives.
Now, while I didn't necessarily agree with everything that was presented in this book (mainly some of the testimonies at church) I can still say that I love this author's way with words and how she weaves the necessary glimpses from the main characters' pasts with the present-day threads. Her descriptions of both the music and art worlds were believable and definitely interesting to me, especially with how the creative process works for each artist.
Overall, this is a beautiful first in series that features the most adorable pair of childhood friends, as well as a talented artist and a rockstar who need to learn who God says they are, and that everything happens in His perfect time. Recommended to fans of the author, Clean/Sweet Romance, and Christian Fiction. ~ 4.5 stars
Content: Sex: there's sex before marriage, but it's never painted in a positive light, and it's always fade-to-black or presented in a tasteful, not-explicit way. Other: there's mention of drinking and drinking issues.
A story of redemption, of a prodigal that returns home. This book was wonderful. I don't normally read YA books because most times I find it really hard to relate but this one I enjoyed. Nolan and Serene have a lot of history together that is told throughout the book in flashbacks we see the series of events that shaped both Nolanand Serene's lives. I loved Serene, she was grounded, sincere and loved God wholeheartedly. She loved Nolan too which sometimes led her to make bad decisions out of fear of losing him. I loved the moment she realised this was very unhealthy and took a step back although it brought about a world of hurt she was willing to let go and trust God to work things out. Nolan on the other hand had been tainted by the world and some terrible experiences. He was selfish, deceitful and yes arrogant, he needed grace. His story of redemption was a great one. He realised his brokenness and need for Christ and knew without Him, he'd be lost forever. He was willing to let go of all he knew to trust God again. This book reminds us that God is never far from the prodigal. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All opinions expressed are solely mine.
A lot of triteness in this book. Abusive musician family members who are abusing drugs. Boy and girl next door became friends then fall in love but his strong personality drags her into following him and nearly losing herself, so she leaves. He finds a new partner and despite having no real interest in her, has a sexual relationship with her. He has strayed far from his faith and now no longer believes in God. Both of them find the hypocrisy of church members frightening and off-putting and use it as an excuse to back burner their faith, rather than realizing they need tp keep their eyes on God, not church members, though some are hard to ignore. Neither of them can get over the other. She is a painter and has an art show, then starts her own business. She has made her way back to God but will he? Will they get back together? Billed as a second chance Christian romance in a series of books called "The Prodigals," there are many other books plus one more about them 8 years into their marriage.
what an inspiring story of finding love and faith and chasing dreams.
The two songs “rocking serene” and “broken wings” talked about and linked in the book were so powerful and amazing. I loved how there were linked translations to the philipino words used and i love the structure of the story with the 3 parts. I loved seeing the growth and spiraling of Serene and Nolan and how faith in God brought them where they needed to be.
I appreciated the vagueness about sensitive topics like intimacy while still addressing the negative effects it can have on future relationships. I feel like this story truly built well rounded and healthy characters forged with difficult trials that brought humility and empathy, with faith and trust in God to make up the difference. I LOVED the compassionate Heavenly Father figure that showed how forgiving, encouraging, and loving can help people to change far better than condemning and judging.
Man i can’t stop thinking about this story and the powerful music that was created for it. Such a good story.
The One Who Rocked Away is the deeply emotional and touching story of childhood sweethearts Nolan Stone and Serene Sinclair. Inseparable since the age of five, Nolan and Serene felt destined for each other. As they grow up together and navigate life’s tricky pathways, their life plans begin to change and Serene is faced with a choice. Can she stay with Nolan without following his dream? Will staying with him be enough to give up hers? What does God want for them?
I like the way Joanna Alonzo approaches and handles some tough issues in this book. She does so in a believable, Christian way that really gets to the heart of the matter and tackles it, yet doesn’t come off preachy or judgmental at all. It is a very real book that shows the faults and flaws of people, Christians and non-Christians, while highlighting how God’s love never fails.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher.
I ended up reading most of this book in one sitting after putting my kids to bed one night; I just didn't want to stop! I was engaged by the flow of the book not being chronological, and I just wanted to keep getting to know the characters. At times I felt that the childhood scenes were unrealistic in nature, but that certainly did not stop me from continuing to read or loving the book. (And I'd say the main characters are prodigies, so that's a big factor!) The characters were captivating, and they grow in maturity and spirituality throughout the story. The One Who Rocked Away explores the importance of placing God first in your life, and Joanna did a beautiful job making that message relatable and thought-provoking. How refreshing to read a novel that both entertains and promotes personal growth! I received a complimentary copy of the book to review; all opinions are my own, and my review is honest. I will be reading this one again for sure!
Having read Rocking Serene (and loved it) i absolutely enjoyed getting to know more about their lives and what they went through. i loved the honesty of the struggles we face in our churches- the message i got was how we all need grace and our human flaw's are not God's fault.
i actually saw myself in both Serene and Nolan at some point, and i loved the message of surrender and bowing to God's will. so hard to do but so necessary for our walk with Him.
with all that said, its not too preachy. i enjoyed how real it was, something i've come to look for and appreciate in all types of art. i can see everyday people, what we go through and the grace of God pulling us out. as someone who was given more than one second chance... i appreciate this story.
Serene and Nolan have been best friends since they were 5 years old. Over time, their relationship grow and shot them straight to rock star fame with their music. But things aren't perfect as Serene begins to question her purpose and if this life aligns with God's purposefor her. As things change for them, will their relationship survive?
This was my first book by Joanna Alonzo, and I absolutely loved it. It's a story about friendship, love, forgiveness, and most importantly having a relationship with God and allowing Him to direct your path. It's well written, and the characters are amazing. Even the secondary characters play pivotal roles in helping Serene and Nolan navigate their lives, individually and together. Great read!!
When reading the book, I was completely hooked from the first chapter and onward. I could not put it down because it was that good! One of the things that I love about reading a book is that if it makes me feel an emotion, then that is the book for me, and this one really hit a home run with me. I probably cried too much than it was necessary, and could really empathize with the characters in the book. It's definitely going on my list of "GO TO's." I want to thank the author for writing such a moving story. It really touched me, and made me feel inspired and motivated to finish my own book, so thank you, Joanna (Ruth, as I would like to call her). Keep chasing your dreams and writing! You rock!
I really like how faith filled this series is, and I have been looking forward to Nolan and Serene's story. I loved the story, however I wished that it was longer and there was more time spent in the present fleshing out the story and the relationship between Nolan and Serene. I honestly wish all the books in this series spent more time in the present and the relationship between the main characters were fleshed out more. Also, some of the decisions made by the characters didn't make sense to me, they kind of felt like a way to get the plot moving and to get Nolan and Serene in the same place at the same time but they didn't really feel true to the characterization of the characters (if that makes sense). Nevertheless, I'm giving this book 4 stars because I really enjoyed reading it!
The One Who Rocked Away is a deep romantic story that commands acknowledgement of the “God Who can swallow kingdoms and kings, nations and oceans, the God who is good, but not safe,” the God Who will not share His throne. Alonzo has written a book with prodigals but also with people who are broken and people who break people, particularly those who confess with their mouths to follow Christ but do not walk in His loving ways. It’s a beautiful story of redemption. Joanna Alonzo has described herself as “a fascinated apprentice to the Greatest Storyteller of all and loves to highlight His supernatural grace in her stories."
I so enjoyed getting to see Serene and Nolan's story, from when they first met as children till they grew apart as young adults. All while reaching for their dreams. I loved how Serene always listened for God's voice and the struggles they both had to face in their journeys. The way the author goes back in the past and then in the present to continue the story moving forward, was genius. If you love clean inspirational stories, I highly recommend The One Who Rocked Away.
It’s a beautiful story of redemption where the the male lead character tried to gain the whole world and ended up losing his soul. But when he came to the end of himself, he realised his need for God. It’s hope for anyone who is feeling lost and looking for a way out of the mess they’re in. It’s relatable for all of us who’ve been lost and found our way back to proudly wear our scars and not be ashamed. 🧡
Wow. This book was the best rock star book I have ever read and probably will ever read. It was clean and Christian - two wonderful things that you rarely find with this topic. I loved the way life was handled in this book - the ups and downs, the temptations, mistakes and redemption. I cannot wait to read more from this author and in this series.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I loved this book! How refreshing to have real-life challenges that Christians face growing up in church life.
Christian fiction with Grit. Nolan grew up on the church but when his heart grows cold to God, he fakes his performance on the church worship team. Serena sees that his new fame has changed him. As childhood sweethearts, she loves him, but can she be true to herself and follow Nolan, at the risk of loosing herself and her faith?
I had to stop reading as I found a whirlpool of emotions swirling around me. This book is so well and and all the way through is the struggle between the Father's love and human desire. I loved the way not only was there assurance that God forgives mistakes but also an explanation of how He can help us overcome the consequences of temptation. This book will have you on the edge of your seat all the way through.
